I had Abbey come out to give me an estimate on repairing the cracks in my chimney. I also had other companies come out for estimates and one replaced the crown wash. Abby said many terrible things about the one company that came out, who's name is Arco. I have to agree that Arco did not do a good job on the crown wash and left a huge mess. Anyway Abbey told me I had bigger problems then cracks in my chimney. They said my chimney was too short and did not meet code. They said I would never be able to sell my house with it that way. They wanted to add on to the height of my chimney, which was not cheap. I didn't believe them so I asked another company to come out and they checked the height and said the height is fine and within code. I would never trust Abbey after this experience. Just beware!

The provider's work was just as estimated in terms of the extent of the job. Replacing a water heater that vented into an old (about 150 years) chimney knocked loose a lot of debris - it had probably never been cleaned. The access point was bricked over. They cut into the wall with minimal mess and noise for solid brick. They were able to clean out years of debris including bird and squirrel nest material. They patched some problem areas. They ran a new vent from the cellar up to the top and installed a new cap system. They prepped the pipes for the water heater and sealed up the area. It was a pretty messy job and they cleaned the area before leaving. A few bumps in the process meant the job took longer than planned but they completed the work thoroughly and as fast as possible. The job was not inexpensive, but the amount of labor and material required for this cleaning and repair was reasonable.
Description of Work: They cut through brick into a blocked-off chimney in order to clean and install a new vent pipe and cap system to get a water heater vent pipe back into working condition.

I called Abbey Road to get an estimate on having a fireplace insert installed in a home I had recently purchased. The girl that answered the phone was very friendly and easy to talk with. They were busy and I had to wait 2-3 weeks before someone could come out and give an estimate (of course they were working around my work schedule which made it more difficult as I cannot easily take time off). Ken came out on a Saturday and was on time and very friendly and easy to talk with. He inspected my fireplace and explained everything about how it was built and what he recommended should be repaired. I did NOT feel like he was pushing to do work that I was not interested in. Everything he said made sense and I feel more comfortable knowing more about my fireplace (i.e. he pointed out that there was brick behind the drywall that surrounded the fireplace opening which I was excited about and I plan on removing that drywall to expose the brick). He also pointed out the the liner that had been installed before I bought the house had been installed incorrectly. He recommended that regardless of what I decided to do with the fireplace, the liner should be replaced for safety reasons. Ken quoted me a price on a fireplace insert and after researching I found his price was on par with the average for a good quality insert. He was able to schedule the install for the next Saturday (again working around my work schedule) The install only took a couple of hours. When Ken finished, he cleaned up his work area and showed me how to use my new insert. I was very pleased with the whole experience.

The technician phoned to say he was ahead of schedule, and asked if he could come slightly ahead of the scheduled time. I told him that work for me. The dryer vent cleaning was done thoroughly and to my satisfaction. Additionally, the technician moved the dryer and cleaned behind it. I have used this company before, and I will likely call them again when the job needs to be redone.

They were there slightly early, asked a few questions, then scoped out the chimney. They looked in the basement, found it full of dirt in the cleanout and arm's reach above. Climbed up on the roof to look down and found it had no liner and was of varying interior width which would not accommodate an insulated pipe. It was a free consultation, and if I choose to have service done to install a working chimney I'll go to them.

They did a nice job cleaning our two chimney flues. I felt the cost was pretty high though. Since they found animal droppings in each unit, they could have charged $100 additional per flue, we were told. They made us feel like we were getting a deal by charging us half that. Still, I felt the hour or so spent cleaning two flues was pretty pricey at $600. I did not check out any other chimney sweep prices since Abbey Road was the only one with a review at Angie's List. In addition, the chimney needs repair (tuck pointing and crown) that they can not do until spring. We were told they would send us a detailed estimate. It is now over one month later and we have not heard back. Yes, I would use Abbey Road again, but not because I thought we got such a good deal. Efficient, yes. Good job, yes. Price: I'd like to research other options.

I had used this company once before to clean the dryer vents in the 2 family units of my twin brick ranch home. They did a very good job then and I was pleased with the performance this time. Curt, who did the work this time, was very thorough and efficient in cleaning the vents in both sides of my home. He used a special vacuum to suck out the lint that he had loosened in the pipes, and cleaned around the dryer and washer area. He pointed out the improvement in the suction at the dryer lint trap, and since the cleaning I have noticed that the dryer loads finish much faster, saving a lot of electricity! Curt also gave me some helpful tips, such as first running the dryer empty and on hot for about 20 minutes after a snow storm to melt the snow around the roof vent so the lint is not so likely to get wet and clog the pipe. The only thing Curt was not able to do this time was to double-check the pipe outlet on the roof. The appointment was early morning and the dew had not yet evaporated which would have made it hazardous for climbing on a roof. Regardless, I know the job was done well due to the improved performance of my dryer.
Description of Work: Thorough and efficient.

The whole experience was stress-free. Staff was friendly upon calling for estimate & scheduling & she walked me through what to expect. Serviceman called prior to appointment and said he was running ahead of schedule & asked if he could come early (that NEVER happens!). He arrived and introduced himself and was pleasant, courteous and ready to do the job. He was VERY knowledgeable, honest, hard-working, and efficient. He talked me through what to look for, do's and don'ts, etc. HIGHLY recommended.

Curt called before his arrival and arrived on time. He was very pleasant and professional. He used floor covering on our carpet and was extremely neat and tidy. He answered all of our questions, checked out my concerns with built up creosode in the firebox, and proceeded to clean our fireplace. He used a large vacuum and there was no dust in the air or particles on furniture while he was working and he explained what he was going to be doing. Curt completely cleaned the area afterwards, demostrated how our heatilator vents worked in our fireplace, and addressed our concerns about what we should look for to avoid problems in the future. The price was higher than we've ever paid before for a cleaning/inspection but prices do go up, and Curt was meticulous in his work, so it was worth it. Now we can enjoy our fireplace worry free and that is also worth the cost. I will definately recommend his service and Abbey Road to others

Very upfront and courteous on the phone when making the appointment. Received a call before the appointment, asking if they could come early. This worked out really well for my schedule. Technician arrived and was very friendly and sociable. He took extra care to ensure no snow and/or dirt was tracked into the house. He immediately setup the equipment and got to work (again, taking care to cover up the carpet and fireplace. He did a cleaning with the standard brush, and then got inside to very thoroughly scrub everything down (I didn't even know a grown man could fit inside a fireplace like that). After the cleaning, he ran the camera up the chimney to inspect it. Throughout the inspection, he explained exactly what he was looking for, and answered any questions I had. A few defects were found and he explained the significance of each. Although he did explain the consequences of any defects, he didn't try to over-hype it and convince me that the world would end by not fixing them immediately. Received an email with the PDF report on the chimney a few days later. He is also providing a couple proposals for repairs, which I don't plan to take care of until after I finish a few other things in the house.
Description of Work: Moved into a new house. Called Abbey Road to perform a chimney cleaning and camera inspection of the chimney and fireplace.
I've always wanted a wood burning fireplace and we recently moved into a new home which has a gas burning fireplace on the first floor and a wood burning one in the downstairs recreation room. I called Ken at Abbey Road Chimney Sweeps for an inspection to determine if it was safe and what work might be needed. I got an appointment for two days later (because we are not in the "silly season" which you can read about on his web site. He arrived right on time and quickly made friends with my dogs who gave me the "he's ok wagging tails sign". He showed me how to get the user manuel online for the gas fireplace and confirmed that it was a ventless model. He also instructed me how to gauge the heat in regard to the possible effect on the flat screen TV which is above the mantel. In the downstairs, his expertise and honesty "blew me away". First of all, the damper which we (and the home inspector prior to our home purchase) thought was broken, just needed a good yank. He showed me, and then had me put on a glove and open and close the damper myself. He said the chimney did not need to be cleaned at this time and that the firebox was well connected without cracks to the masonry. He also told me what to look for to determine if repairs would be needed in the future. He did not need to use the camera, and therefore saved me that fee. He went to the roof and determined that a raincover was needed and easily took care of that from the supply in his truck. Next he gave me information about possible work that would be a good idea in the future but was not needed now. Because I am a novice, I asked for some basic woodburning fireplace information and told him how much I have enjoyed the helpful hints on his web page. Because there is some stacked wood on the property, he offered to check it out with me and taught me how to assess the best wood to burn to keep creosote from forming in the chimney!!!!!!!!! We just added him to our "good guy" list. Thank you Angie's list for helping me find this company!!!!!!!!!! Friendly, Highly Qualified and Skilled, Honest!!!!!

Everything went great. The appointment was setup quickly. They were very responsive. The technician was prompt, and professional. He did a great job with attention to detail. Overall: it was everything I expect from a service call. It seems like the price is a little high, but I've used a "bargain basement" chimney sweep service in the past and I was not satisified with their work. He did a great job and gave my wife and I a few pointers on the stove and answered all of our questions. I called these guys to come out and clean the chimney for my Buck stove. They arrived on time, seemed very pleasant, etc. They disassembled the pipe leading from the stove into the wall opening that leads to the chimney, shined a flashlight into the back of it and said, "Uh Oh". They showed me what they said was a cracked liner and claimed they couldn't clean the chimney due to "liability issues".They showed me the "cracks" which, appeared to me anyway, to be spider cracks in the soot where the hot gases initially contact the liner. They proceeded to tell me that my chimney needed relined with a stainless steel chimney liner and it was unsafe to burn until this was done. They quoted me $1700 to do this, put a chimney flue cap on and said they'd also throw in one chimney cleaning. I told them I'd have to think about it, gave them their $75.00 fee just for showing up and showed them the door. Being rather concerned after being told it was unsafe, I did not use my woodstove that winter or this past winter. This spring I had an experienced mason that was referred to me by a friend come out and have a look. He said the liner looked OK to him. Nothing really unusual on the interior but the cap and brickwork on the exterior needed work, which I already knew. I had him inspect the chimney on my furnace as well and he told me (what I already suspected) that it was quite deteriorated. The house and that chimney are 60 years old, the Buck stove chimney about 30 years. Long story short, for $1800 I had BOTH chimneys demolished and replaced, only $100 more than the quote JUST for a liner, cap and one cleaning. This was demo, material, labor - an "all in" price. The chimney for the furnace was torn down to the roof, rebuilt and properly flashed. The Buck stove chimney, all 22 feet of it was demolished and completely rebuilt as well from the ground up. They're both beautifully done, solidly built and I'd be surprised if I outlive either one. Maybe Abby Road saw something with the liner that neither I, or a 30 year mason saw. I really don't know, but I'm VERY glad I didn't spend the money on that liner. Maybe they're great sweeps, again I don't know. Just be sure to look at all options before you pay them to line your chimney.
Description of Work: Came out to clean my chimney, inspected chimney and said my liner was damaged and they couldn't clean it because of liability issues. Instead they charged me a $75.00 fee just to show up and gave me a ! quote ! to reline my chimney with stainless steel chimney liner.
