I was diagnosed with cancer and was unable to perform my own lawn care. Schmidt's Seasonal Services (SSS) was hired to perform weekly lawn service. The first week they didn't arrive until the week after their stated start date. No notice just left us in the dark. Their second visit, again much later than expected. Also attempting to call SSS was nearly impossible. Only one number to call. Inability to leave a message due to a full mailbox. When finally a call was returned I was told that a larger job was going on and that I will be done after that.He, the owner also explained that he had medical family issues and had poor staffing troubles. I was already a week behind on services. SSS's third visit was delayed by rain. AGAIN no communication from them as to when they would arrive. ( They came almost two weeks late.) When the lawn was serviced their heavy equip left tire ruts, scalped areas, lawn bald spots from the spinning tires. That alone wasn't enough, the lawn care itself was poor. There was large amounts of clippings over the yard, heaped against the house, edge trimming was spotty at best. To make matters worse the tire ruts were made on the first pass and when owner self admittedly said he saw what was happening he continued to mow. He was driving the mower. AGAIN no effort to contact me was made until I was left to find the damage. SSS was terminated. Initially SSS required the down payment of 1/2 the cost of the season up front (over $830). With the termination I expected a refund of the funds. Minus two service calls, I wasn't paying for a damaged lawn on the third. After the initial termination call, Aaron Schmidt, the owner, has returned to being impossible to reach. days to weeks go by without an answer and when he does he's nice and apologetic and promises to send immediate payment. Not a cent. Ashley Schmidt, his wife, sent an email asking for yet another extension and promised to send funds, giving the same excuse I see on other reviews. Again, nothing sent. You would be wise not to trust this company. Neither with your lawn or your funds. I've filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the Ohio State Attorney's office.

Aaron responded quickly to our initial email. He was courteous during our initial meeting. He emphasized wanting to come to a workable budget to incorporate all of the items we discussed in planning landscaping for front and back yard. In part, the contract that we agreed upon: 5 trees at $120 per tree, and 16 plants at $50 per item. When he arrived and planted everything, it was clear that he had bought smaller, less mature plants and had marked up the costs threefold. Prior to the work date, my husband and I hesitated about the costs on the invoice, but, we wanted to assume positive intent from this company. Even though there were separate labor and delivery costs, there were still itemized plant costs. (We presumed perhaps a slight mark-up folded into plant costs, even despite separate line items on the bill). We went to the garden center where the company purchases their plants--and we price checked the trees against the amount quoted on the invoice. Example: we looked at arbor vitae trees with price of $100+ and tree with price of $40 and the height/maturity is easy to distinguish. We thought, okay, this is what we can expect to get based on these approximate prices. We felt comfortable understanding that the costs listed would reflect the size and maturity of the plants. After install date, we can confirm that we were charged $120 for trees that are priced at $30 to $40. (Arbor vitaes). As far as the other plants (hostas, speedwell etc), we were charged a flat "$50" for each of them and they were all well below this value. We were stunned at the blatant discrepancy of everything. My husband and I are loathe to complain or have any confrontation about stuff like this. My husband called Aaron a couple of hours after the job was done. He explained that we were really disappointed with the situation. Aaron admitted he had spent several hundred dollars in less on the plant materials than what was on the invoice. He credited us $600 from the final bill. Had we not contested these amounts-- we would have just lost out. We have paid the remainder of the bill and just feel like we have learned our lesson. For any future landscaping: I will request a receipt of actual materials purchased. This whole situation was disappointing. I felt like this guy thought my husband and I were idiots who have absolutely no idea what plants should cost. I am glad he refunded us part of our money-- but he still burned us in a major way.
