+ 1 moreHershey Cohen is extremely efficient in returning phone calls. I called on a Thursdays and he was able to go the next day to give an estimate and the next day to replace the heater and do the plumbing repairs. They are extremely prompt.

This allowed me to take less time off from work. He appeared to do a good job, and the plumbing contractor agreed. Pleasant and professional. Arrived right on time.
Description of Work: Installed electrical cable from an existing electrical box to another site to accommodate a new appliance (tankless hot water heater); used a metal conduit to conceal/protect th cable. Had to go to Home Depot for materials.

Description of Work: They aligned a few doors, replaced the glass in a door that was broken, and they plastered a hole in the ceiling (that was from a leak) they then repainted it as well. They also did some other minor things, like fixing the pole chain in the lavatory.

+ 1 moreMr. Cohen was unable to install the baby-proof latches I had purchased for the kitchen, but explained clearly why they would not fit my cabinets. When figuring the final bill, he subtracted the amount he had planned to charge for this job from the estimate he gave me, however, when I asked about the 10% first-time discount I THOUGHT I had read about on the Angie's List website, he told me he had asked you several years ago to remove that. I paid the full price, but when I checked on line after he left, the discount is still mentioned.
Description of Work: He repaired a chair bottom that had come out; replaced part of the attic floor that had been removed to do some electrical work before my son bought this house; installed boards in the sides of the garage, with hooks on them for hanging tools, chairs, etc. He planed down five doors in the upstairs hall, so that each one closes properly and completely.

He puts in and removes my room air conditioners each season, changes hard to reach light bulbs, has installed a new toilet, repaired windows with defective ropes, and done countless repairs to keep our aging house in good condition. I have used him for many years. He is always reliable, returns calls promptly, and is very pleasant. He refers specialists when needed, (a furnace maintenance man, and a chimney person), all of whom have been qualified and good to work with.
Description of Work: Removed and stored 4 air conditioners, replaced hard to install light bulb in fixture -- took approximately one hour.

+ 0 moreEXCELLENT! I called him at 9:00 am and asked him to come the same day. I had already been turned down by another handyman (basically, the job was too small for the other handyman to bother). Herschey told me he was leaving town that afternoon, but he was going to try to do it anyway. In less than 2 hours he was at my house. This was so helpful considering I have 2 small children. The price was probably a little high, but I was so grateful for the same day service!

He understood what we needed, and built the new steps within two visits to the house. What we now have is more sturdy and safe. We also asked him for a quote for an interior paint job. We decided to wait on that job for now, but Herschey's quote for that was also reasonable.

+ -1 moreThe job took two days due to the need for plaster to dry. The contractor used was prompt and courteous. I was very happy with the job as I was able to paint immediately. Through no fault of this contractor, the water leak was not properly fixed on the outside of the home, so the area is still affected. But I will use this contractor again in the spring to fix the plaster, once the leak is properly fixed.
Description of Work: Patched and repaired plaster walls in third-floor bedroom in preparation for painting; patched and repaired plaster in bathroom damaged due to water leak and former owner's removal of wall paper; patched and repaired botched drywall project I attempted in basement. (Also received estimate for tiling work in 1/2 bathroom of $800.00, not including purchase of tile). Work not performed yet, but I will use this contractor.

+ -1 moreWe've had Herschey before. He can fix most anything. Both he and sewer man--I forget his name--were very personable and kept me informed each step of the way. We didn't have him out to do estimate lst, as we've worked with him and we've had plumbers out enough times to know he would be less expensive. We also had Herschey look at and give estimate of some plastering repairs and repair to probable source of ceiling leak. Herschey is always punctual in returning calls and arrival time.
Description of Work: Drainage hole in basement floor where washing machine water and lst floor toilet water goes was backing up causing flooding on that side of basement. Herschey and his sewer man spent close to 2 hours fixing it. Snake wouldn't go far as was blockage that nothing could get through. They had to break up the concrete at place where blockage was. It turned out to be about bucket full of thick tree roots which they had to dig out then re-cement hole in floor(ours is 1927 house with original clay sewer pipe which fits together about every several feet--roots break through these cracks to get to the water).

+ -1 morePretty well. Hardest part was running electric line underneath front walk without damaging concrete. I'm happy with the final outcome. I called The House Surgeon back to have him cap the gas meter and install photo-electric cell on lamppost, but never heard back from him. So I called The House Doctors and they finished the job for me.
Description of Work: Disconnected old gas lamppost in front yard. Ran electric line underground in conduit out into front yard and installed a new electric lamppost cementing it into the ground. Has an on/off switch inside garage. Installed a new outdoor socket on front of house. Price includes what I paid for the new pole and light. It does not include capping gas meter or installing photo-electric cell. See my report on The House Doctors for this.

+ -1 moreVery polite, called to say would be a little late and then arrived when he said he would, got down to business right away and finished the job quickly and neatly, didn't charge extra for sealing the little drain even though that was not in the original quote. I'm having him do a larger project this week (landscape and possible siding repair) so I'll let you know how that goes. Overall so far, Hershey is responsive, competent, and acts like he wants my business (which I find is so rare in this field).

+ -1 moreHershey fit me into his schedule the day I called. I had no heat or hot water and he came within a few hours to repair. The gas company came out to check the repairs and found no leaks. I was happy to have heat on a cold day in April, during a busy move.
Description of Work: Two minor gas leaks needed to be repaired. One leak was a valve near the hot water tank, the other was a coupling leaking. A valve was replaced and sealed and the coupling was fluxed and tightened.

His price is probably on the high end, (I don't really know because I haven't used anyone else for so long), but he is worth every penny.
Description of Work: Have used the House surgeon for many years to do all kinds of maintenance, repair work and general odd jobs, ranging from replacing a light bulb, installing window air conditioners, replacing faucets and garbage disposals, repairing window ropes, replacing a toilet etc. I would not hesitate to call him for anything in our 70 year old house that needed repair , replacement or maintenance. Last contact was Dec,2005 to replace several bulbs, install a grab bar for bathtub, repair one leaking toilet, and replace toilet seat in another bathroom

HE TOOK PHOTOS WHEN THE GROUND WAS DUG-UP AND THE NEW PIPE WAS LAYED BEFORE HOLE WAS FILLED BACK IN. HAD ACCESS TO MY HOUSE WHEN NO ONE WAS HOME SO HE COULD CHECK THINGS IN THE BASEMENT.
Description of Work: ALL NEW STORM SEWER PVC PIPING AROUND 4 SIDES OF HOUSE $6500. FIXED 1/2 BATH SANITARY SEWER DRAIN OUTSIDE OF HOUSE $1300. GUTTER DOWNSPOUTS, DRIVEWAY DRAIN, AND 1/2 BATH DRAIN WERE BROKEN AND EMPTYING INTO SUMP PIT. REPLACED A BACKPORCH CONCRETE BLOCK THAT NEEDED TO BE REMOVED FOR ACCESS TO 1/2 BATH DRAIN.
