The House Surgeon

The favorable reports on Angie's List is the reason we gave them a call. They responded quickly.

Mr. Cohen came over promptly to look at our front door and give me an estimate. His painter was away so it was a week or so before he could do the work. Mr. Cohen came with his painter Eugene to introduce him to me which I thought was very courteous. The painter realized that it was going to take 2 separate days to complete the work because he was going to need to spackle after sanding to smooth out between areas that were down to the bare gray metal and those that still had the original white paint. Eugene came out twice on each of the 2 days so that he could do the work and check it after it dried. I realized that the door knob and lock set was in poor condition and since it was going to have to be removed to paint, I asked if he could put on new door knob set which I bought myself. He was very accommodating: even though it turned out that one part of the strike plate was a different size, he made it work. With the job taking an extra day and installing the new lock, I was expecting a higher bill. However, the price remained as it was originally quoted. My door looks great!

The two gentlemen that performed the work were very personable and conscientious about doing a complete job and clean up afterward. They took all of the debris removed from the gutters with them when they departed which was totally unexpected. I will be calling House Surgeon for an estimate on another job in a few minutes.

Hershey came out to look at the electrical problem and then returned a few days later. He finished the job very quickly and for a fair price. For the garage door, he came within hours of my call just to check it out and was able to fix it on the spot. That's very common for him. Hershey Cohen is fast, responsive and very trustworthy. We've come to count on him for little jobs and big jobs. He seems to be able to fix anything.

They were very fair and professional and the job was well-done. Also, they were extremely helpful when we filed for reimbursement from our home warranty company.

We had a very sudden relocation out of state. There were several small repairs needed on our home before it went on the market. Herschey responded very quickly and gave us a very reasonable estimate - to fix several items. As I packed up I found a few more things. Herschey came over and fixed everything and even forwarded our mail. He totally understood that we were helpless in this situation and needed our house to look as good as possible. He jumped right in, assumed the responsibility, and kept us in close contact. His total bill after all the fixes was only $450 but he was worth a million $!

Everything went well, and I would hire them again.

Herschey has been our "go to" handyman literally for decades. He has always been there for us...day or night, responding promptly and professionally with great advice and very fair pricing. It has been a great comfort to us to have him in our lives...whether it was to address an emergency or to keep an eye on our property when we would travel or be gone for entire winters. We actively look for opportunities to refer to Herschey...and we do so with complete confidence in how he will treat our referrals

The tile work was beautiful. This guy was good! The guy that did the basement floor was maticulous. It is stunning. The painting was ok altho we're having a bit of a problem with it now but it might be contributed to a water problem. The electrical job was excellent. I've called on this owner since then for advice and will use his service again in the future.

All of the projects he has done for me were handled extremely efficiently and professionally.

On both occasions Mr. Cohen (and his subcontractor) was timely, polite (even helped carry in groceries), reasonably priced, and most importantly, did a great job.

He did a great job. He performed all of the above jobs without a problem. He is very professional and experienced. He can handle small and big jobs around the house, or find the right serviceman for the larger jobs. HIRE HIM WITH CONFIDENCE!!!

The "House Surgeon" came promptly and spent a lot of time looking over various areas of the house. He diagnosed that the basement problem was due to a hose spigot from the garage that had been used only recently. The ceiling in the garage, he said must have been due to an earlier leak which was no longer a problem and he gave an estimate for patching the garage ceiling. I thought that if the hose spigot caused the basement problem, I would just stop using that hose spigot since it was not usually used anyway. As for the garage ceiling, I was wary about patching the ceiling without being sure that the cause had been detected & fixed. When my husband returned, he determined that the copper pipes which ran under the stairs was causing the books to get wet. The reason it was not detected earlier is that I had rolls of paper toweling stored directly under the leak which had been absorbing the water for some time. Later another plumber said that the pipe in the garage was actually a ventilation pipe which went up to the roof to expel toilet gases. If there was a leak in that pipe it would be leaking rainwater not toilet water and the smell might be the gas expelling from the leak. So, although the house surgeon was punctual, polite, professional and responsive it appears that he is 0 - 2 with respect to his diagnosis. I realize one can't be right 100% of the time, but I was surprised that he did not at least see the leaking pipe in the basement.

Hersch did all these projects himself or with a few helpers, but always took final quality control responsibility. His taking accountability was key to me, and I was always pleased with the results. He stuck by his estimates for each project. But the real test was when he agreed to replace the faucet and found that the manufacturer had changed some of the components without making that clear. He had quoted $120 for the components, plus $125 for labor. However, when the parts sent to him were wrong twice, and he had to redo the fix 3 times because of that, he absorbed the extra cost without me asking him to. That's truly professional!

The quality is excellent and I'm very happy with the results.

Herschey removed the old wooden threshold and upon discovering a void between the floor of the vestibule and the threshold, filled it with mortar before fitting in the replacement step. He repeatedly checked the ability of the front door to close, latch and lock properly and left me with a front entrance that is more functional and attractive than when we bought the house.

Work was done exactly as promised. All workmen efficient, skilled, pleasant. Hershey Cohen was present to supervise and consult most of the time. I was very satisfied with the result.

He was a gem to work with. I had no way to get the swing-set to my house so he went to the store and picked it up. He started the job and it took a bit longer than he anticipated. I wasn't at all upset because he really took care of it as if it was his own. Each night everything was picked up and when the job was completed everything was back in place. He was a pleasure to work with and I would have him do work at my home again.

Handyman removed an area of drywall in the closet to access the pocket door, repaired it, and installed a panel for future repairs to be easily made if necessary. No problems since.

Quick diagnosis and repair. Punctual and thorough.

I have already hired him again to stain my deck. He is just great, if you own a home and you are busy, little jobs and big jobs are a problem. He always comes and does a great job.

We were always pleased with his quality. The moment he comes to our house, he starts working to fix the problem with out any delay. His diagnostic skills are accurate and he's both skilled and fast at solving the problem at hand. I always feel I'm getting more value than I pay for!
