The techie checked the system and found that R-22 was low. He recharged the AC lines and cleaned the outdoor coil with some sort of icky chemical that pooled on the ground for hours afterwards. He ordered replacement parts for a bad TXV, which we're told will take some time to arrive at the warehouse. Two days after the service visit, I smelled a horrible smell from the outdoor AC unit area and our system stopped blowing cold air. Shut it off. Can't seem to get a human operator on Blind's customer line; we'll leave the windows open for Memorial Day weekend and hope it stays relatively cool. We're on the hook for another service call to replace a bad TX valve, drain, dry and recharge the lines. Should note that we didn't buy our HVAC equipment from Blind --so nothing is under warranty, but I hope the next service call goes better. (Updated, 6/18/10) Brian was our service technician. He had diagnosed the problems on an earlier visit that the first technician had not quite gotten right and this was a follow-up call. Brian replaced a bad TXV in our American Standard central air conditioner and drained and dried the lines to the outside coil. He recharged with R-22 and installed two 6-inch round dampers that I had requested for the two basement HVAC supply ducts to try and get more cold air into the upstairs areas. Brian also tagged several water and gas shutoff valves in the basement for our future reference. The job took about two hours and he did not charge us for one of the dampers since the installation went fairly easy. We have a service plan with Blind, so we saved 10% on parts and the labor.
Description of Work: Blind & Sons performed the annual inspection of our AC as called for in our service plan. Technician found that the system was low on R-22 coolant. Unfortunately, he only found the problem -- a bad TXV -- AFTER he recharged the system. (Updated, 6/18/10) This was a follow-up to an earlier visit in which our air conditioner's TXV was found to be bad and all the freon had leaked out. This call involved replacing the bad valve, draining and recharging the lines, and installing two 6-inch round dampers on two feeder HVAC ducts into the finished part of our basement.

According to our service manager, a bad TXV cannot be detected if the unit is low on refrigerant. I'm glad we were able to fix your unit and we're happy to have you in our Service Partner Plan family.

Jason was the technician who performed the service and inspection. He was very friendly and professional, and seemed to be well trained and very knowledgeable. The service was great. I didn't realize they were not "in the neighborhood." I assumed the 330 area code to be Medina county. The company is located in Barberton but services Medina county as well.
Description of Work: Maintenance and inspection for air conditioner. A/C was slightly low and needed charged. I opted for their $15/month service plan (or $180 annually) for spring inspection of A/C and fall inspection of heating system. Plan includes a free plumbing inspection and a free electrical inspection as well as discounts on any parts needed. The individual inspection would be $89 and the fluid/gas for charging the A/C was $45.

Call was originally to snake slow kitchen drain. Worker came twice and couldn't get it open (even though the first time he said it was repaired). Sent TV viewer through line and found need for cast iron pipe replacement under concrete garage floor; indicated additional work might be involved when that pipe was exposed. That turned out to be true, and I photographed each step of the way. Second part was when the exposed pipe and unexposed clean-out pipe turned out to be in need of replacement due to a large hole (the house is 50 years old); dug outside garage through concrete to replace pipe. Repaired and replaced a hookup from the bathroom T to the main sewer line, the need of which was revealed by the camera viewing. Replaced clean-out and other piping in basement leading from bathtub at my request, as it was becoming corroded. The total bill ended up being $12,400, and I asked for a refund of my initial $99 payment for the kitchen clean-out that began this whole thing. It's been two months, and I still don't have it. I may have to file a dispute letter with the credit card company to get that returned if they don't send it in the next two weeks. Also, on the first phase of this job, the order was to dig the front yard, repair the underground T connection from the bath and replace it with PVC pipe and also to replace the pipe in the basement from the bathtub. They did the outside work and ran out of time to do the rest (it was a Friday evening). Told me they'd be back or call me on Monday or Tuesday of the next week. After ten days I had to call them to get the thing moving again. BUT that part of the job was supposed to total $2,900 and they managed to charge my credit card, even though the work was completed. The last phase of the project (jackhammering the garage floor and the sidewalk to replace and repair pipe) was done very well, but only because the workers they sent out (two workers--Scott and Matt?) were courteous, efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly. I've used Blind for other things (heating, etc.), but I'm disappointed in the overall experience in this situation--it had to be done, and they were the bearers of the bad news, so that's not the issue. It was the delay and false starts in keeping the work progressing. And then charging my card when the work hadn't been completed, failure to refund the kitchen sink charge (never fixed). The landscaping and replacement concrete work won't be done until later in the spring, and I hope I don't have to lean on them for that.
Description of Work: Attempt to open slow kitchen drain, replace cast iron clean-out in basement and replace with new plastic pipe, dig yard to repair tile to cast iron connection with PVC, water jet line, TV camera through sewer line, jackhammer garage floor and concrete walk outside to dig to make additional repairs and replacement of cast iron piping with PVC, replace concrete and landscape dig-site

My experience with this company was very disappointing AND EXPENSIVE. The plumber changed the drain mechanism on my bathtub becuase it had been leaking. He charge me $320 for about an hours worth of work. They did use their parts. The next day I had the tenant calling me to let me know that water was dripping down into the firth floor kitchen after they ran a bath causing damage to my kitchen celing. They appear to have little interest in customer satisfaction. In short, the quality of work was very poor and the price was high. From my experience they are content with making as much as possible the first time with little interest in keeping you as a customer. I called another plumber out and they fixed it correctly in about 45 minutes and charged me less then $100.

We had problems with them. We had them do work for us before when they put in a new furnace. We were really pleased with their work. When we had furnace trouble, we called them. The register was blowing cold air and they spent an hour and a half trying to fix it. The next day it was still blowing cold air. We called them and they wanted to charge an $89.00 service fee besides any parts that they would have to change and labor. We didn't think that was fair. My husband talked to the boss and they had a rough conversation. The boss said that he would call it a maintenance fee. So they charged us $89.00 just to come out the next day besides parts. We were not happy. I was amazed that they had given us such good service before and now they wanted just money. I was very disappointed. When he came the first night, he told us about the different packages that we could buy. If we paid for a maintenance type fee, we would be the first to be served when we called. That didn't make sense. We were very unhappy and we won't call them again. I have friends in the area and I will be sure in telling them not to call Blind & Sons. All they want to do is make money. They don't want to give service. I talked to the man that represents another furnace company. He called and talked to them. The girl from the company talked to my husband and said that they would come out for a free maintenance in September. That is an opportunity for them to tell us that we need several things done. They charged us $216.00 on the first night they came out in January. The next day it was blowing cold air again, so they came out and charged us $160.00. The price was bad because they charged us on 2 consecutive days. They didn't fix it the first night they came out. They were responsive and came out the first day we called. But when my husband disputed the service charge the next day, he had to wait and talk to the boss and the boss was nasty. When the man from the other company talked to them, he had Becky call and that took about 2 weeks. Their punctuality was not good. They were not professional, considering that they argued and yelled at a customer on the phone. We will never use the company again. It took us about a month to find out we were not having any luck at all. They didn't really care about us. They just cared about money.

The quote was for $2130 including a coupon that saved me $180. Due to the dollar amount I advised I would have to get at least one more quote. The 2nd quote was from another highly-rated Angie's list company that I also had used in the past. Their quote was just $1250 and included one more plumbing item. Due to significant price differences as well as Angie's list ranking and prior experience with the 2nd company, I did not have Blind & Sons perform the work.

I have an older house with original construction dating to 1850, thus the heating system would be considered ?after market?. I decided to look into updating the oil heating system originally installed in the 1960's with the incentive of the tax break offered by the federal government. I saw an advertisement for Blind and Sons and contacted them and another local company for estimates. I requested a formal written quote form both firms. After waiting two weeks I had to call Blind to make a second request for a formal quote. The owner returned my call to apologize for the delay and a quote was received by the end of the week. Since my heating system was old, I made special note to ask specifically about any upgrades or other work that might be required to the duct work. Both quotes only included changes to the return air ducts. After reviewing both quotes, I decided to go with the heating system offered by Blind and Sons. Installation was scheduled for the week following acceptance of the quote. The crew arrived within 30 minuets of the scheduled time. After removal of the old system and placement of the new equipment I was informed by the installation supervisor that the existing supply ducts were inadequate and would need additional work and that there would be an additional $3000 charge. This amounted to over 30% in additional charges but as my old furnace was no longer around I felt I had little choice but to agree to the work. I questioned why this work was not in the original quote as I specifically asked whether the duct work was adequate for use with the new system. The sales person who quoted the job only said he questioned if the work was necessary but was assured that it would help make the initial investment of $9600 worth while. While inspecting the installation I noted that they had used the manufactures thermostat and not the Aline Air programable thermostat that I had in my quote. I pointed this out and they agreed to install the programable thermostat for me. The new thermostat and the additional work was performed the following Saturday. The additional work was finished in less than 5 hours for the two man crew yet I was charged for a full 8 hour day for the crew at $165/hr/man ($360/hr labor). After the crew was finished I was informed that the company had only one person qualified to set up an oil burner system and that he was not available to do the work at a time convenient to me until the next weekend. I set a time for late Saturday morning. When he had not arrived by 3:00 PM I called the office dispatch to ask if I was on the schedule, the service man finally arrived about a half hour later. He finally finished up about 8:00 PM so after three weeks, I finally had heat again. Fortunately we experienced mild weather for that period so I was able to maintain heat using a wood stove and kerosene heater ? next time I will plan this for the summer. I would rate the equipment as excellent and the installation work was very good although not timely. The project quote has much to be desired. I think over running the original estimate by over 30% is questionable and I would not have taken on such debt had I known the total cost of this project. Due to this I personally would not use this vendor again and would advise caution when having a large job quoted especially on an older house. Obviously work in older homes with oil burner systems is not their forte. I also had to contact Blind and Sons once again in January regarding the paperwork necessary to apply for the tax credit being offered. Also, I should mention that it took three calls to get this resolved.
Description of Work: We had an existing oil burning furnace and air conditioner replaced with a heat pump and oil burner system. There were repairs made to the return and supply air ducts and they were cleaned.

If said no and he responded as he did several times "if I could not do it, let him know". Asked that I call him back in a couple days to confirm my decision. I would feel better to get several quotes. Another thing, I mentioned that I was a member of Angie's and he said "yes, they are in Angie's", but never brought up the $750 coupon discount in this month's book. I could not see 8 years paying for a furnace and air conditioning right now.
Description of Work: I called for an estimate (first) and person told me up front "if I could not do it, to let him know" which was putting it "don't waste my time". I did not like the push for the 1.5 hours he was here. It was the pressure of buying a car. I know times are tough, but I really wanted to get some estimates. They were personable, very conscious of tracking, and told us what they were doing all along. They showed us where the leak was and showed us what pipes were broken. They were a little lower in price when compared to other companies. They were prompt. We called them in the morning and they were here by the afternoon. We also use them for heating and air conditioning maintenance and duct cleaning. We have a service contract with them for the heating and air conditioning maintenance. They stand by their work and do quality checks. We didn't think they had done a good job cleaning the duct once, so they had the duct checked and then came back out and did it for free again. They even apologized profusely for not having done it properly.

Read the story above and decide for yourself. Blind will never get any more business from us. Blind lost business because I hate being pushed. They should be ashamed for trying to bully anyone into buying a new heating/air conditioning unit they don't need.
Description of Work: The repairmen tried to hard sell mom and me a new heating/air conditioning unit. The repairmen told us the air conditioning unit would break if we ran it and the furnace was so old it was costing too much money to run it. They wanted the salesman to come out that day, but we refused. The salesman's appointment was set up for the next day. We couldn't cancel the appointment. He pushed harder than the salesmen to force us to buy a new furnace/air conditioning unit. He refused to leave any information or prices. We called another company for a second opinion. Guess what? For $90 the air conditioner was fixed and the furnace was checked out. Nothing was wrong with either unit to warrant replacement. The man from the second company suggested adding a heat pump to boost the efficiency of the existing system. He left pamphlets and prices. There was no pressure to buy anything. He said Blind is infamous for scaring old people and women into buying something they don't need.

When I first called Blind & Sons they were very prompt when responding to my call. The guy that came out told me what needed to be done and he would be back to fix it. He gave me a time of when he would be back and when he didn't show up I called the office. They were very nice to me when I called and I asked what time the first guy was coming back out. They told me that they were not sure if he would be back out because he was on another job, so they might send someone else. I told them I wanted the first guy because he knew what was going on and what was wrong and he told me he would be here. They assured me that they had great plumbers and they would send someone out. I hung up with them and called another company to fix it. When I called Blind & Sons back and told them I found someone else that could show up within the hour they told me that they would get the first guy out and he would be there to fix it. I told them no because I already had someone showing up. I probably won't hire them back because they were also very expensive.

Blind & Sons did an excellent job, as they normally do. I've been contract service customer of theirs for 2 yrs now, and every time a tech comes out to perform a preventative maintenance on our HVAC, plumbing, etc it has always been a positive experience. In this case our furnace was getting PM'd and the tech advised we may want to consider replacing the furnace due to age and some troubling failures he was beginning to see. As a contract service customer they gave us a good deal on both furnace and A/C, which we verified by quoting other similar HVAC companies. Two weeks later we had a crew of 2 guys, Bobby and DeJohn, working their butts off on the coldest day in 5+ yrs to install both our new furnace AND A/C! Total time in the house was nearly 12 hrs. The result was a wonderfully installed furnace and a/c. You can tell these guys take pride in their workmanship by the details of how they did things that others may overlook, how they routed intake/exhaust piping, how they routing wiring, drain pipes, etc. They left the work area and the house very clean and went to lengths to ensure that. Blind & Sons may not be the cheapest, but trust me you get a lot of value for what you pay them. And, they are competitive and were easy to work with.
Description of Work: Installation of new furnace and air conditioning units.

They came out to give us the estimate and they were very nice. We are still considering having the work done, but we were very happy with them. They were very professional, and took our house and our needs into consideration.
Description of Work: I gave them a call for an estimate on heating work.
