Stack came highly recommended from Angie's List. A tech came out to the house to give an estimate for a new HVAC unit or was it worth it to have the old un-connected unit repaired, told my husband that the old unit needed to be replaced, it was old, dirty and full of oil & water. He then said that he could not give him a price, another tech had to come out and measure for a unit that was a nice fit for the size house we have. The tech then told my husband that the service call was $80.00, maybe I did not understand that the tech coming out to give us a quote was considered a service call, what happened to the free estimate? to make a long story short, my husband refused to write a check and he immediately called me. He was told that the $80.00 would be deducted from the full price of the unit. Maybe the advertisement should state that there is a service charge for coming to a location. I was disappointed with the way things were handled and I will not use Stack.
Description of Work: I contacted Stack for a free estimate for a new HVAC system or have the existing unit repaired and moved.

I bought the furnace from them and had them install it. It was quit fascinating watching them put it in. I interviewed 15 companies before they came. I enjoyed watching them out it in. It took them two days. They seemed to be punctual and everything. We were very pleased with the price and job.

Diagnosed existing Heating system recommending to switch to a new one. Answered all my questions and I concluded that their recommendation was the best cost/benefit alternative. Presented a quotation on the spot anwering all my questions. There was a genuine interest in getting the best cost/benefit alternative for us ruling out options offered by other vendors that would not only make the product more expensive but tghat would not bring real value to us. Within two days of this diagnostic we had a brand new AC/Heating system. During this time they provided heaters to keep the house warm. Overall I was really impressed with their speed to react and their willingness to serve and start lasting commercial relationships.I highly recommen them...!

The service provided by Jim and Greg is to be commended. They are both trustworthy and dependable. They were on time and went out of their way to make sure that the furnace and hot water heater were installed with little to no disruption to the house. Every time I call Jim (Furnace, hot water tank, air conditioner, faulty duct work) he has always came through in a timely manner with a fair price. If you are looking for someone dependable to take care of your HVAC needs with professionalism search no further - Jim Oswald is your guy.

They came out on an emergency basis late on a Saturday night. They did a good job. They did everything pretty well. The charge is not covered under warranty. There were two services, one an emergency service on the Saturday night and they came out later that evening. The part was ordered and yesterday they sent a guy. They are very professional and they were knowledgeable. They are just a great company. I trust them so much. They called up and said this was what they were going to do and this would be the price for the work; but when they went and checked it out, they found out that they could bargain more from the company with all different configurations. They saved me $400.

The appointment was initially scheduled for Dec15 as this was their first available appointment. When I spoke with them about what I wanted, they explained the two options and made a recommendation of the better option given the size of our home, which was very helpful. They gave me a general quote at that time and planned to have a service person provide a specific quote after evaluating our system during a maintenance service call on Dec 5. A couple of days after I scheduled the appointment, they called to tell me they had a cancellation on Nov 17 and would like to do the work then if I was available. So they were able to do the work a whole month early, which was great. They came right on time and did a great job with the installation. They honored the general quote which had been provided over the phone. They take such care with the work they do and just in general while being in your home...in fact, when one of the guys went outside to hook up the water line, he even uprighted some potted plants that had been overturned by the wind during the night. This was the second time we had used Stack and they are the only ones we have used or will use again. The first time we had called them because our AC wasn't working well. They arrived right on time and spent a lot of time making sure the diagnosis was correct. In the end found several major problems even though the house was only a couple of years old (we were the second owners). These were going to be very expensive repairs and essentially the system was going to be re-built. Stack actually agreed to cover one of the very expensive parts themselves and while contacting their distruibutors to find the other part, one of their distributors felt so strongly that the part should not have gone bad in that amount of time, they actually agreed to cover the other part. We truly appreciated the lengths they went to in order to minimize the cost to us. In the end we only paid about $450 for labor when we could have easily had to spend several thousands. They did a very good job with all of the work and took care in our home. The guy even noticed while working on the fan outside that our dryer vent was clogged with grass and he un-clogged it. Unfortunately, right after this work was done, a family member became seriously ill and we were not able to submit a report on this work within a timely manner like they very much deserved, but we were very happy with their work. Stack is truly a wonderful company. They do great work and their people are very conscientious.

BLUF: Stack Heating and Cooling replaced my Weil mcLain EG-65 boilerin January 2011 and felt I was absolutely ripped off. Imagine paying $8,600 for a repair that you could have had done for $3,000 less, having to call back the tech four times because the controls were installed incorrectly and your over-priced boiler won?t light, ultimately having to suggest the correct trouble shooting procedure (I was an Electrical Engineer and am a retired Naval Officer with plenty of experience with large industrial power plants including boilers), having the insulation job half completed allowing your new boiler to over-heat your basement costing you $$$ in excess gas bills, and finally not even having the courtesy of receiving a complete final bill for work performed - I paid a deposit and the then the balance and told that each payment was ?sufficient? record. 1) I was charged ~$8,600 for the repair ? a Weil mcLain EG-65 boiler can be had for between $2,975.99 (Younits.com) and $3,366.98 (Home Perfect) and that is *retail pricing* Stack obviously got *wholesale pricing* for the boiler they installed. This means I was charged over $5,100 dollars for labor. Given that the installation took about 2 and half man-days of labor, this works out to $125 per hour, per man. This is excessive for type of work done, particularly given the other issues. 2) The boiler controls were installed incorrectly prompting 4-call backs because the boiler would not restart after going through one or two heating cycles. This was entirely caused by technician error(miswiring). 3) Getting Stack Heating to return and insulate the steam piping required another call back and the guy skipped out after saying ?I need ?X? pipe lagging). Never corrected due to my absolute frustration at this point. DETAILS: My ~25-year-old Weil mclain boiler failed completely in mid-winter and had to be replaced. Stack Heating and cooling was the third contractor to give me an estimate, and I decided to have them replace my boiler because the man who came out to give me an estimate (~$9,500.00) actually measured my radiators, and sized the boiler correctly before quoting me a price; something the other companies *should have done*, but did not. The other quotes came in at ~$5,000, but the Stack representative identified errors in my steam piping that would have to be reworked. Stack said the boiler replacement was also going to take 3-4 long days, almost twice the time that the other companies quoted. I knew I was paying a premium, but wanted to have the job done right. Unfortunately, I had to wait almost a week before Stack could get to work. When Stack arrived, the crew leader (owners son) determined that the major piping rework was not required, but that the boiler return piping had to be raised about an inch and a half at the boiler ? a serious job, but nothing like the original estimate (a day-plus of labor for 2-3 guys). I was quoted a discount of about $800.00 for parts and labor. The actual tear down and physical removal of the boiler took half a day, and the new boiler was dropped in place the same day. This surprised me as I had been told that it would tack a day-and-a-half to do this because the new boiler would have to be assembled on site. Obviously, the crew knew before hand that they could manhandle the new boiler in one piece into my basement, saving Stack Heating and Cooling at least an entire man-day of work. The crew knocked off promptly at 3pm everyday ? so much for the long days. The physical install was however performed well, the guys were nice, and cleaned up the mess they made. The only issue at this point was the insulation was not replaced on the steam piping, which annoyed me as I am a retired professional engineer, and insulation is critical to efficiency. Once the install crew left, the boiler shut down in the middle of the night. The boiler water level controls were installed incorrectly - an error that caused four (4) callbacks. What irks me about this was that none of the three repairmen actually followed a factory trouble shooting procedure. One replaced a flue vent that was not the issue. Ultimately, I had to insist that the repairmen actually look at the level control circuit wiring diagram and low and behold: *it was miswired*! (I am an Electrical Engineer and am a retired Naval Officer with plenty of experience with large industrial power plants including boilers)! Boiler cleaning was another hard point. Giving my engineering and naval background, I was certain that there was some requirement for treating cast iron boilers with a chemical like trisodium phosphate (TSP) to raise the boiler pH and to degrease the new boiler. This is roughly the equivalent of putting anti-freeze in your car to keep the radiator from rusting. The Stack Heating and AC crew looked at me like I was from a different planet when I asked about this. Thinking that boiler feed water treatment was something only for industrial boilers, I dropped the issue. Instead, Stack came back three times to ?skim the boiler? (basically to remove the grease and other protective coatings that are used to keep a new boiler from rusting prior to installation). Imagine my surprise when I found the Weil-mclain boiler Technical Services Bulletin NO: SB-0603, which describes using TSP. http://www.weil-mclain.com/en/multimedia-library/pdf/weil-mclain-pdf/service-bulletins/SB0603.pdf Other issues: (1) I never did get the steam piping properly insulated as the tech who came out started the job, but then claimed ?I need ?X? pipe lagging,? 2) I still do not have a final bill that shows what was done for x-cost. Instead I have receipts for two separate payments and the estimate. I am not happy with Stack Heating and Cooling.
Description of Work: Remove and replace a Weil mcLain EG-65 boiler with the same, correct steam piping error from legacy boiler. install a new feed water piping. This was an emergency repair.

Called to diagnose why furnace was no longer lighting to provide heat. Made service call mid-morning, they noted they could not guarantee service same day, but would try. They noted they could call in PM with status. Called early PM noting immediate availability. Arrived within ten minutes. Technician diagnosed problem, replaced faulty part, completed heating service checklist, and responded to some questions within forty-five minutes. Questions included concern about noise from blower. Provided order of magnitude price but did not oversell. Charged for material, labor by the quarter-hour, and a travel charge. Technician was knowledgable. Technician was friendly. Area was left clean and neat. Did not question travel charge because of prompt response to service call, but post call review showed it was twenty-five percent of bill. They provided previous service for this furnace and have always been responsive and provide quality work.

Hired Oswald heating and cooling to repair/fix bad workmanship from a furnace and central air install by another heating and cooling company. Jim Oswald was very nice and he answered all my questions and took his time to fully inspect the previously installed system (s). Jim noted 6 main issues alone with city code violations with the installed system and explained them to me and how he will repair/fix them. Oswald showed up on time and finished all repairs as noted. They even walked me around and showed me the work they preformed and why they chose to do it that way. Gave me recommendations for future service and cleaning. VERY Happy with work performed.
