The furnace is nearly 30 years old and is showing it's age. Ken explained what the issues were and recommended we install a carbon monoxide alarm and plan to replace the furnace soon. He offered to credit the cost of the service performed if we purchase a new furnace from him. He was very thorough and explained all the issues and what maintenance he did thoroughly to both me and my husband. He gave us clear options and did 2 1/2 hours of work (including driving 30 miles to our place) for $200 which I thought was reasonable. Plus, he was very nice and personable and his office staff (family member) is very helpful and cheerful. Great service!
Description of Work: Furnace tune-up. Ken was very thorough, cleaning the furnace, replacing a faulty part, testing for draft in the chimney (even going up on the roof to inspect it), and evaluating carbon monoxide levels.

Dean's Heating and Cooling is a wonderful company. They came in and gave us an estimate on the work, and new units. Their estimate was accurate, and they did not go over it. They are kind efficient people who do amazing work. They are responsive and quick to come out to your house if there is a problem. They do not try to sell you extra services, and are honest if they think fixing a unit is not a good idea. I use them for all my properties, as I know I can trust their work.
Description of Work: Installed a brand new furnace and AC units, as well as all the duct work for said system.

We called the office in the morning, Ken Dean called back one hour later, and by 12:30 he was already working. He checked the coolant pressure, found it was low, pressured the system with nitrogen, searched for a leak, and didn't find any. There was a filter in the coolant line that was visibly rusted, and I asked him to check it. He found that coolant was leaking through the rust. Apparently this was very unusual. He emptied the nitrogen, filled with new coolant, and restarted and checked the system. He was very professional at all times, and answered many questions in a patient and knowledgeable manner. He gave me a rough estimate before starting the work, which was $50-100 below what he ended up charging. I did not ask the reason for the discrepancy, but I got the impression that he initially did not expect to have to replace all of the coolant, and also he seemed to expect to finish faster than he did (3 hours). He charged $70/hour, plus parts and coolant. Overall, it was a good experience, and i would recommend him.
Description of Work: The condenser unit of our central AC was cycling on and off very quickly, and the system couldn't cool the house to the desired temperature. Ken Dean checked the system, found that the coolant pressure was low, replaced a leaking coolant filter, replaced the coolant. Finally he checked that the system was now operating properly.

Our AC unit went out and I called Dean's. Spoke to Ken who asked several questions and gave me his estimation of what it could be. Based on our phone conversation, he thought it could be anything from a fan motor ($400) to needing a whole new unit (approximately $3500). He wanted me to double check a couple details so I did. When I called him back the next morning, he already had jobs lined up, but gave me an ETA - with the caveat that it could be later. I called him after the show time and he immediately pulled someone off to come do an initial check. The guy that came out was extremely professional and talked me through his diagnosis step by step. At first he thought it might be the compressor, but kept investigating and finally figured out it was a capacitor that had gone bad. He worked through deciphering the model from a 20-year-old rusty capacitor, got it hooked up and our AC was back up and running within an hour of his arrival! I was very impressed with every step of the process. I went to Dean's because my wife had used them before we were married and was impressed with their work. They talked through the process with me and treated me like a valued customer instead of an annoyance. My wife had told me that they were very good at explaining everything and I saw the same thing. While my AC was being worked on, I was also learning about it and figuring out things to do to keep it running smoothly. They gave me honest information every step of the way, and fixed only the problem with a $40 part instead of taking advantage of the fact that I could easily have been duped into replacing the whole unit. I'll be using this company for all my heating and cooling needs in the future.
Description of Work: Troubleshot broken AC unit. Identified problem and only fixed the problem without any extra expense!

Furnace wouldn't start, husband checked and no power to the thermostat. Called Dean heating and cooling and arranged for them to come at a convenient time. They arrived within 5 minutes of appointment. He diagnosed the problem--a blown transformer--and had the correct part in his truck. Also found damaged wires, which caused the transformer to blow. He removed damaged wires and replaced them and put in the new transformer. Took 1 1/2 hours, a reasonable time for the job plus the long trip to our farm. We were able to pay via credit card right then and got the receipt emailed to us. He also helped socialize our new puppy before leaving! Very friendly, professional gentleman.
Description of Work: Ken Dean did a wonderful job fixing our furnace. The wires had been chewed (mobile home/farm/rodents--a fact of life) and he replaced the bad wires and the blown transformer. Ken is very friendly, does a professional job, and charges a reasonable amount for his services.

Ken Dean, sole proprietor, worked on these two issues. He turned on the fireplace and tested emissions. There were no problems with the emissions. To improve the humidity in the house, he examined the humidifier, explained that the valves often go bad, suggested periodic replacement of the evaporation pad, and turned up the water flow from a saddle valve feed. His work was good quality, however, I feel that he overcharged me for this service: $250. This is the second time I have used his services, and also the second time, the exactly the same. Good service (I did not have anything that was rocket science) , but poor pricing scheme. I believe he would have done better with a more reasonable fee structure. I will not be using his services again. I do NOT recommend his services based on his atrocious billing practices.
Description of Work: I needed to check the emissions from my gas fired fireplace in the basement, and have the my humidifier turned up.

Response from Dean Heating And Cooling
We are very sorry to hear that you will not be using our company again. I just wanted to make a correction to your review. I looked up the work orders that you were referring to and found that the price that I charged was not $250.00 as you stated. The price for the first service call that you referred to was in 2003. At that time we were charging $60.00 per hour for service work. And the total amount of that invoice was $69.50. The second service call that you were referring to was in January of 2009. The price was $129.95. That included 1.5 hours of labor at $80.00 per hour and a $9.95 transformer. We found that the existing control wiring for the humidifier was improperly wired and corrected the problem. We strive to keep all of our customers happy and feel that we charge a fair price for our services. We hope that you will reconsider using Dean Heating and Cooling in the future.
