Matt provided several services for us and all met our expectations, and to our satisfaction. In addition, when his custom built masonry mailbox was knocked over by a very recognized local power wash company, he was able to duplicate the original and once again, we were very satisfied.

It did not go well, and I recommend that you do not use this provider. I contracted this company to build a masonry mailbox in March 2012. The mailbox was to cost $1200, and I paid a $600 deposit. An initial date was agreed upon in March 2012, but had to be cancelled due to rain. I went on vacation in early April, and we agreed to do the job when I returned. This never happened. I sent emails and voicemails during the next few months asking when the job would be done, and the provider assured me he was putting me on his schedule. Finally, an email and voicemail went unanswered in August, and I became concerned about the project. I sent an email cancelling the project and asking for my deposit to be returned, and this resulted in a phone discussion with the provider. The provider claimed he was living paycheck to paycheck, and that he didn't have my money. To be clear, he had spent my deposit, instead of putting aside the money to pay for materials to build my mailbox. This is dishonest unethical behavior, in my opinion, and I consider the money stolen. I gave the provider two weeks to come up with all of my money, or at least a plan to pay me back. He did nothing. No calls, no emails. One week before the deadline, I emailed him to let him know I would write a bad review on Angie's List (and take other actions). He responded to my email and told me the he wasn't likely to come up with the money, and indicated that the reason the mailbox didn't get built was my fault. As expected, this is the last I have heard from him, and I have lost $600. I strongly recommend that you stay away from this contractor. If you do decide to use him, please do not give him any money until the work is completed to your satisfaction. I am also contacting the city of Amherst, OH with a complaint.
Description of Work: No service was performed. The provider was contracted to build a masonry mailbox, but failed to deliver after several months. The project was cancelled but the deposit was not returned.

Response from CUSTOM BUILT MASONRY
In response to this customers claim, they are not telling the entire story. When the deposit was collected we had a conflict of schedules, We wanted to get the job completed but the customer wanted us to wait till they were back from vacation which was over a month later. During the waiting period a very expensive custom engraved address stone was made for the mailbox, which cannot be used on any other job, unless that address were to come up again which is highly unlikely. In addition Time, (which customers dont realize there is alot of behind the scenes running around to get everything together) Block, mortar, sand and steal rebar and sackcrete were also purchased and still sit in our warehouse that was set aside for this job. When they got back we arranged a day to come to the job, upon picking up the brick we fowarded to brick style to the customer which they did not like, so they went to another supplier and picked a brick that was more closely matched, but they did not have enough in stock at the time, so this also delayed the job even longer. Periodically I talked with the customer and gave them a status, They claim that I was unable to be contacted . I informed them that the brick might be a few weeks or months before they had enough in stock, so we had an agreement to complete the job in the fall, which has not arrived yet. Which would of worked out well because of the slower construction season during that period and trying to get our schedules to match. Then out of the blue the customer calls me and says he wants his money back because he wants to spend it on something else. The customer became toatally unreasonable and did not want to work together to get this job completed any longer. I told him materials were already bought and brick were on order with the supplier but the customer did not care, he just kept saying give me my money back, even though a good portion of it was invested in materials already. To help to the job completed I even offered him a 20% discount off the job and he was totally unreceptive to that idea and said we ripped him off, which is not true at all. We have been in business now for 17+ years now and never have had this problem before now. This customer was extremely hard to work with mainly because of scheduling, the customer felt that they had to be there while the work was being completed, trying to get schedules to match was difficult, that is why we agreed on the fall getting this job completed. but the last communication I got was them asking us to come to the job on July 4, which I in turn called him back and told them on their answering machine that that day would not work, being a holiday and all. So currently this job is at a standstill until an agreement can be made.

The chimney looks great. We are very pleased with the work he did. My B grade only comes from the clean-up end of the job. I might have expected more attention to sweeping up after the job and removing the old chimney materials. I definitely had the impression that he would have cleaned up much more carefully if I had asked, but I am not a very demanding person. I shouldn't have to tell them that cleaning up is an important part of the job. So I down-graded the job to a B so that maybe this company will think about the clean-up end a little more. The fine work he did would be A-level with that.
Description of Work: We needed a complete chimney rebuild from the roof up. Custom-built masonry came out as scheduled for the estimate and did the work within a week of the estimate. It wasn't an easy job due to our very steep, old slate roof. He worked from the inside since we have a flat spot on the roof with a hatch that eliminated the need for scaffolding. Therefore he had to move all the brick, mortar, and tools through the house and up the many flights of stairs.
