He was very friendly, very professional, and meticulous. He did a great job.
Description of Work: Midwest Masonry came out last fall and fixed the chimney. We were bricking in where there used to be a garage door and a main door, so he filled all those in and cut in a new window.

They came within a week and gave an estimate. It was a free estimate. They recommended the people who did leveling. That was really cool of them. They were honest. I would consider them in the future.

Max and his crew arrived promptly as promised to begin the repair work. Max informed me that a better repair alternative was available than the fix I had selected, at only a marginally greater cost, which I elected to pursue. When the project encountered a speed bump, as projects like these often do, Max was quick to point out the problem and offer possible solutions. The solution I selected was far and above any expectations I originally had for the porch project and, in this case, came at no additional cost to me despite obvious expenses incurred by Midwest Masonry in both materials and labor. Then entire crew were polite, courteous, considerate, and very professional. And all this came at a price that was very competitive to the numerous other quotes I had received. If you are looking for quotes for a project of your own, your search is over. I strongly recommend you call Midwest Masonry to have a professional and comprehensive evaluation of the job.
Description of Work: Midwest Masonry repaired a deteriorating corner of my cement front porch slab, refurbished the remainder of the front porch, inlaid Brick extending from the front door to the edge of the pad, and replaced two front steps.

When Max came for the estimate he provided suggestions about how to repair our stoop instead of replacing it and he also provided a suggestion for an additional step to break up the walkway. (A great idea!) The estimate was very timely and he came out quickly to perform the work. They showed up on time both days. After completing the job, Max's team cleaned the entire area and even pushed the grass sod that they had to dig out for the forms back into place. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone and I would not hesitate to use them again!
Description of Work: Our front stoop was crumbling and the walkway leading away from the house was sinking into the ground. It all was over sixty years old. There are four steps that lead up to the stoop so it is fairly large. They capped our stoop, dug up the old walkway, and poured a new one. The cement has a brushed finish. It looks fantastic!

Left a voice mail 4/25, inquiring about getting an estimate for a project. Received a call the 26th or 27th. Took several more days for them to get out to my house, which was understandable as they just did estimates on weekends. Max was at my place Sat and told me that I would receive a quote by Wed. (the 4th). I didn't hear Anything from them until the 12th, when the secretary called and asked if I was still interested in a quote. No Thanks.
Description of Work: No services performed. Poor Customer Service. Quote not even sent.

Hurray for Max McClellan of Midwest Masonry (also Mike & Craig)! Dodging the Spring rains -Midwest Masonry was able to replace my front stoop and sidewalk in 5 days. They explained they're daily procedures to me each morning before I headed to work. They were able to work around an electric dog fence - quite gingerly, I might add. :) Everything that Max promised was done...and he was quite innovative when we discovered that my front iron railing had rusted through. He was able to save my front railing (so I didn't have the cost of replacing it) by using caps at the bottom. He also replaced a PVC pipe in my sidewalk that had seen better days. He added some dirt around the stoop and sidewalks - so that grass would grow back this Spring. Stoop and sidewalk look super!!!! Great experience with Midwest Masonry. Highly recommend them.

My thoughts: 1. Like Max. Great personality. 2. He was timely in getting back to me. We had great communication by email and by phone. 3. He was timely in doing the estimate. He was a good listener because I had certain things I wanted done a certain way. 4. He was timely in doing the work. 5. I could tell he really knows his stuff. I ask a lot of questions, and he was very good about explaining why he does things a certain way. 6. The work was top notch. He took his time and did it right. He was very detailed in taking care of how the porches and driveway were done 7. When the clean up of some of the small, old concrete pieces was not quite what I wanted, he came back out and took care of it immediately and without question. 8. I would have liked for him to have made sure the dirt along the concrete drive was properly leveled with the drive and seeded and strawed, but it was no big deal, and I will handle it. I know if I called Max to take care of it, he would come out and do it. But, I liked him and the work so much, I am going to handle it. It was a minor thing. Liked Max and his work a lot. I will ALWAYS use him and will ALWAYS refer other people to him. I wish he was near where I live because I have two projects in Tennessee I would love for him to handle! My driveway looks great. The two porches I had installed look great. Max gets an A+++ in my book.

We found Midwest Masonry and Max because of Midwest's rating on Angie's list (A) and are glad that we dig. Midwest replaced a nearly thirty year old concrete driveway and did an exceptional job. The new driveway has a combination of stamped, colored sections and brush finished areas. It was a complicated pour and Max and his crew succeeded in giving us a driveway that is a showpiece. (if driveways can be showpieces). The were on time, extremely easy to work with and very skilful. I would recommend Midwest Masonry without hesitation.

I called about five different contractors and Midwest Masonry was, by far, the most professional, courteous, flexible, and effective contractor I have ever hired for work on my house. They gave me an excellent price and no hassles and the work area was CLEANER when they left than it was when they arrived. Simply amazing. Max called me back and we set a time for the quote. He arrived spot-on time, not like some contractors who say they will be there at 9 and show up at 11. Did some measurements, told him what I was looking for out of the repair and how we planned on using the area. He even made some suggestions on how I could use river rock to cover the area under the deck once the concrete was done to make it look real sharp. After I got the rest of the estimates, I decided to go with Max. Some of the other estimates were close in price but none beat his professionalism (on time, e-mails professional looking quotes, etc). I e-mailed him back and told him we wanted to award him the job. He called me the next day and we discussed a rough time. Then a small window opened up a little earlier than expected and he called me on a Wednesday to see if we wanted it done on a Thursday or Friday of the same week. The crew arrived, set everything up, and began work right on time and they were even done ahead of time. The concrete looks great. They gave it a smooth edge which looks fantastic. I am happier than a clam and all of my masonry work will now go to Midwest Masonry. I only wish they did other work, like paint, car repair, pet immunizations, and so on ;-)
Description of Work: I had a small back porch underneath a second floor deck that had settled against the house and was pooling water against the stucco. There were also a couple of cracks in the concrete. Approximate size was 10x20 feet, broom finish. Old concrete had to be jackhammered and removed, then new forms set and concrete poured.

I had 4 other basement contractors (all well known, local contractors) make bids and Midwest Masonry was the lowest bid by far. MM came highly recommended from a friend in my church who builds high-end, custom homes. He uses MM construction regularly. This was a very difficult job due to the age of the house, the site problems and the fact the home was occupied during the job. I have used MM twice now (last time in August, 2010) and will use them again. They finished completed it to my satisfaction and beyond. I would recommend Midwest Masonry to anyone without hesitation.

Midwest Masonry was excellent! Max and the boys are artists. This was not an easy job. Max was very responsive and communicated every step of the process. Max went above and beyond with the coordination of inspections, creative design consultation and work ethic. As the project progressed, we added new requests and ideas to the project. Max consulted on our ever-expanding project with candor and good humor, considering every idea and how it would look as a finished project. We could not be happier with the finished product. This was our first concrete project as homeowners. Max and crew were attentive to detail. If you have a concrete patio plan, use Max!
Description of Work: We had a partially collapsed sewer line, discovered in February of 2010. The sewer line was excavated and replaced, leaving us with a half-destroyed deck on the back of our house. We decided the keep the half of the deck that was salvageable and go with a stamped/dyed concrete patio for the other half. Since the soil was disturbed from the excavation it was necessary to dig down to undisturbed soil line (10 ft deep) and build up from there. We chose Midwest Masonry for the job, primarily from the great ratings they received on Angie's List. We also needed a concrete floor poured for our garage with apron included.

Max McClellan is one of the more conscientious professionals I've worked with on any project. From my first call, to the project's completion, Mr. McClellan was timely in arriving to scheduled appointments as well as responding to emails. Max had several suggestions of how to best accomplish the job from the size of the patio, to the color and finish best suited to our needs. His staff were very courtious and proffessional. It was my opinion that the afore mentioned grill was initially set too high, Mr. McClellan showed his creative problem solving skills by accommodating my request to lower the grill. The job was done with a concern for the details which is evident in the finished product. It is my expereience that Max McClellan genuinly cares about the job he is trusted with as well as his customer's satisfation. I have already refered family and friends to Max McClellan & Midwest Masonry.

Max came out Approx May 2010 to give me an estimate to do some driveway work and place a basketball goal. He was very informative and had great information. He even came out a second time to look at the scope of the work again. I made the decision to hire him and it went down hill from there. He was to come out the first of July (7/5/10) to begin the work which he said would be a 2 day job. He called and canceled. It was rescheduled for a week (7/12/10) We rescheduled for 7/22/10 due to our family vacation. He gave me his work that he would start the job on that day. I waited and he never showed up. When I called him, he had every excuse there was and apologized about the delay. I told him to come and start on the job the next day.(7/23/10) Then the truth came out, that he was still working on a current job and would not be able to make it out until the next Monday. (7/26/10) I was expecting him to start the job today ( well, not really with his track record) and sure enough I received a voice mail from his office saying he had to go out of town to finish another job and he would not be able to start mine for another two days...but due to all the delays, I would never be satisfied with the work so therefore I should go with another contractor to do the work! I am beyond dissatisfied with this customer service. Now my job has been delayed for almost a month, the job is not done, and I have to start this process all over again. This is the worst example of customer service and if this is how he runs his business, I'm glad he is not doing the work. I would NEVER recommend him for a job due to this. This is extremely unprofessional and unacceptable.

Response from Midwest Masonry
We take our clients opinions very seriously when doing business and I am a firm believer that our clients are always right. Unfortunately, this job was delayed for two reasons, both reasons Midwest Masonry could not control. The project prior to this job was extended by the homeowner because he needed our services for longer than expected, which did cause the initial delay in the job scheduled for the Member. Another factor that played into the delay of her project was rain. Our contract clearly states that the time frame of the overall job may be altered due to weather and factors out of our control. When it rains, it doesn't just slow the completion of the job we are on, it also pushes back every job that is already scheduled. We did contact the Member to keep her informed of the delays and again, we sincerely apologize to the Member and her family. After hearing her continued dis-satisfaction and her lack of understanding or inability to see things from our perspective we decided it would be more beneficial for the Member and Midwest Masonry to terminate the contract at that time. We are taking responsibility for not completing this job, however, we ask that you base your opinions of Midwest Masonry on reviews of jobs we have completed and the great reviews we receive from our many satisfied customers. Sincerely, Max McClellan Owner of Midwest Masonry

The project went wonderfully and without major problems. Max is very patient and thorough with his review of the needs of the project and is open to lots of questions (which I tend to ask). We replaced our two car garage floor due to sloping issues as well as the front walk and step. As well, we replaced our side porch floor and Max was kind enough to throw in an exposed aggregate finish free of charge (which I LOVE). I suppose our only issue is that the asphalt driveway is now pretty dirty/messy and even after my husband power washed it, it is still not great. And, there were some issues with grass having concrete poured on it that we will now have to reseed. That said, these issues are probably ones that are to be expected. We are very happy with the work and would use this company again.

They did an excellent job. I wanted until we had our first winter before I gave this review, and the driveway still looks good. They gave us a unique design and makes the driveway look very classy. They did accidently crack a sidewalk during the removal of the old driveway, and they fixed this for us for no additional cost. They could of been a little better with their communication with us.

Max could not have been more professional. Communication was great when trying to get the quote scheduled and he showed up prepared and on time. Max was a great communicator and very professional. Therefore, we were able to collaborate on ideas, such as adding the large limestone step and mixing a color he had not used before. He even experimented with staining the limestone by trying it out on a small sample; we decided against that, but he really didn't charge us for his time to try i. The results are fabulous. I can't wait to use Max again on a back patio and fire ring.

It went well, they did a nice job and very eager to make things just the way we wanted. It was a process that covered several days as the concrete had to dry before the finish could be put on and then that had to set some before the sealer could be put on. They cleaned up after themselves and did not damage the rest of our yard. The garage steps have made it much easier for our toddler to get in and out and I'm sure the new back steps will be the same. In both cases, I explained the difficulties we were having and Max made the suggestions of what to do.
Description of Work: Max poured 2 steps over the single awkwardly sized step in our garage. He also poured over our narrow back stoop, making a larger landing with steps leading down to the new 15x15 patio they also poured. They put an aggregate finish on the back steps and patio and sealed it.

The entire process went very well. Max runs all facets of his business from estimating to managing the crew on-site to completing the invoicing and connecting me with other service providers who can help add finishing touches for the patio. His follow-up was outstanding compared to the other people I requested quotes from, came to my house on my schedule to thoroughly go through the entire job, offered me time to consider all the options, provided detailed estimates in writing and a written contract that included accountabilities for both parties. Once on-site, Max's crew was outstanding. They were friendly, offered suggestions on how to mold the project while they were setting up the grid to make the patio integrate into the yard and genuinely proud of the work they did and liked working for Max. Finished product looks great and I would highly recommend Max and Midwest Masonry to anyone looking for quality work.
