Description of Work: I called Midwest Masonry at the beginning of April and asked for someone to come give me an estimate for repairing a free-standing wall in back of my house that was cracking and crumbling. The rep. did show up for the estimate on the appointed date and gave me a verbal explanation of what he thought was occurring. He said he would have to send me an official estimate via email. I waiting for several weeks and I did not hear from them. I emailed them again on April 26th and asked if they were still interested in doing business with me. I received a response the next day stating they were still interested. I verified my email address with them as they had also stated they could not seem to populate the "at" sign in the email template through Angie's List. After verifying my email address, I thought perhaps they would send the estimate (if not through Angie's List then via direct email). I have yet to hear from them. This makes me wonder what kind of service I would get from them if I did hire them to do the job!

We were very pleased with Midwest Masonary. Once we finally scheduled the job everything proceeded smoothly. I really enjoyed working with Max and his crew. They were very professional and did a great job with replacing the sidewalk and stoop in front of our house. I would definately recommend Midwest Masonry and would consider them for any future work I need done. They could have completed the work a week earlier if had not left town for a week. The weather also cooperated for the work that was done. It only took two days for the job to be completed. E-mail was the best way to communicate with Max as he is at job sites during the day.

Overall, it was alright. It would have been nice if they did it level the first time. I was glad they were willing to fix it. I'm also glad I was in no hurry, had no deadline as the work was not completed in a day or two. The whole process took about 2 weeks to compete. Max called, said they'd be starting the next day. Then didn't due to weather. When they did start the project, they needed an electrical source. I was not home at the time so they had to rent a generator. After pouring the concrete, I found a puddle from the rain, in the middle of the porch, up against the house. I asked Max to fix this. He said he would and needed the electric ran out a window. I ran the cord out the window and they didn't show due to late scheduling. The next day, a Saturday, they came out. Instead of tearing the new porch out, he offered to pour another few inches all the way around. Okay, as long as it was sloped to drain the rain water off. Currently, the rain water is beaded, like a waxed car, from the applied coating, but no signs of puddles. The porch looks nice but they tromped all over the flower bed along the perimeter.
Description of Work: Max and company removed the existing front patio and replaced it, approx 7'X21'. Removed the awning and reset the existing railing to original.

We would like anyone reading this review to know that we did make a mistake, but we went above and beyond to fix the problem. There was a small puddle of water on the porch after it rained so we repaired the job and poured additional steps with a $500 value at no cost. As you all know, concrete work is unfortunately completely dependent on the weather so yes, patience is required. We do everything possible, however, to stick to the tentative schedule agreed upon with the homeowner and make sure that our customers are happy with the end result.

A little over 1.5 years after this job was done, I became convinced that I had been fooled by this company with such glowing reviews. We had cracks at the end of the driveway only months after the job was done, but I assumed that it couldn't have been about the quality of the work. I assumed that those cracks were unavoidable because that's where the concrete meets the asphalt road. Well, we ended up with a major crack later, but it wasn't Midwest Masonry's fault. It was done by the company that cares for our huge trees. I contacted Max of Midwest Masonry, asking simply for an estimate for the work, but he was uncharacteristically difficult to get in touch with. I left lots of messages and got little response. While he was being unresponsive, the tree company had their preferred contractor out for an estimate and they were able to start the work in a timely manner, so we moved forward. Working with the tree company's contractor, I made some interesting discoveries. I'll only mention one. Even though Midwest Masonry had spoken to me (while giving the estimate before we hired them) about the requirement that the driveway be a certain thickness at the street (6 inches, I think), the tree company's contractor showed how far short of that standard our job fell. Therefore, he explained, the cracks where the concrete meets the asphalt were indeed avoidable. As he explained himself while showing me, it was blatantly clear that it was much thinner than would ever be okay. I can't help but assume that that's why Midwest Masonry was suddenly impossible to reach. Because enough time had passed, the company was no longer liable. Because the tree company did the damage, they were taking responsibility for the repair, but I didn't mention on Midwest Masonry's voicemail that we knew what had caused the crack. I just asked Max to offer an estimate. For me, his avoiding the situation confirms Midwest Masonry's willingness to cut corners. I think that he assumed that we were calling him because we suspected that cracks might be happening because of the low quality of the work. I'm now convinced that that's why they suddenly became unresponsive and unreachable.
Description of Work: We had an asphalt driveway and concrete walkway and steps leading into the front door. Midwest Masonry demolished it all and created a concrete driveway and concrete walkway and steps that were then stamped to create a stone look. They also re-graded areas where water would accumulate on the driveway and where water was beginning to come back toward the front of the house near the steps.

Max and his crew were very professional to work from start to finish. He was very responsive to the initial pricing inquiry and throughout the entire project from start to finish. Weather was a factor as with any outside job, but Max was very communicative with us about the time the work would be done and we were very impressed with the final product and would recommend him to others and use him on other jobs.

We were referred to Max from a family member - they had used Midwest Masonry for their patio last year, and we love the way it looks and functions. We called Max, and he returned our calls in a timely manner, and came out to the house to get us a price quote. We went back & forth a few times based on the dimensions and layout of the patio, but finally determined a design and price we all agreed on. From that point, Max laid out a plan, and stuck to that plan. He quoted 4-6 working days for completion, and weather permitting stuck to that estimate. He & his men came out, demo'd our old patio, and all the parts to the deck that had to be removed. They asked me before they removed each item, just to ensure it was ok with me, and to see if I wanted to keep any of the pieces. They also checked with me before removing or trimming any plants that were in the way. I really appreciated their attention to detail. They laid down wooden boards to minimize any damage to the yard as well. The entire site was kept clean and orderly through the process, even taped off with "Caution" ribbon so that the neighbors would not intrude. This is really helpful, as we are on a corner lot, and many neighborhood children walk through the yard. The process was very clean and timely. I was very happy with their professionalism. When the patio was finished, Max called & stopped by to ensure that we were 100% happy, and to brief us on patio upkeep. He even referred us with contacts in case we needed landscaping help for around the new patio, and deck carpenters if we needed help painting or reconstructing the banisters. This was very helpful to us! The patio looks amazing, and we are so excited to begin using it! We are on a corner lot, and many neighbors have begun asking who did it, and commenting on how great it looks! I will definitely refer Max & his team at Midwest Masonry.
Description of Work: They took out our old brick patio and installed a new stamped concrete patio, roughly 20' x 25' with a built in fire pit. They also removed a portion of our larger deck and built 3 large angled steps, and on our smaller deck 2 steps. The patio is an ashlar stamp with a gray finish. It all looks amazing!

We called Max and he called us back the same day. From start to finish everything was great. Max came out and gave an estimate for us. Very polite and professional. When we decided to go ahead with the patio we ended up adding an additional 35 sq ft to the project which ended up being one of the best choices we made. Max's team came out, formed the patio in one day and then poured the concrete within a week. Very neat, clean and professional through out the job. The stamped look is exactly what we wanted and my wife and I could not be happier.

It went great overall. We started late in the season and part of the work was delayed due to weather and had some problems with getting the gas and water street (alley) shutoffs extended. They took extra care to do things right and everything was well done. Try to get started earlier in the year.
Description of Work: They tore out an old garage apron on two three car garages and replaced with new cement and built new sidewalk and steps from the garage to the back porch. They also built a poured and pressed a cement patio that looks and feels just like brick. Everyone commented on the patio looking so great. They built in the curves just like in the plan.

Beautiful! Max provided several estimates as we were considering doing our driveways in concrete, also. He was polite and knowledgeable about the work and clearly explained the details. We had several phone conversations as we settled on the work to be performed. Max was courteous and great about returning calls. We settled on just replacing our front porch and walkway and picked our color. We arranged a start date and Max was right on schedule. Only one hitch occurred which was due to the brick facade of our front wall resting on the front porch. This was unexpected and the removal process broke the mortar joint of the first course of bricks. Max offered to pour the porch one course of bricks higher to compensate and repair any other damaged mortar joints above the porch. The finished product was great and we are very happy with the outcome. The extra height of the porch actually works better shortening the distance from our front door threshold to the porch surface.

Max was great. Through the entire process of getting the estimate, the demolition, framing up the forms and pouring the concrete Max did an excellent job of communicating where we were and what needed done next. On the day he was going to pour we ran into an issue with the existing drains and I needed to call roto-rooter to clear them. Thanks to Max's flexibility he went on to another job while I had that problem addressed and we rescheduled for the next day. He and his crew were always very courteous and friendly.
Description of Work: I had my front steps removed and redone as well as the first 6 feet of my garage floor removed and redone. My driveway slopes into the garage and there are drains in from of the garage doors that were also repaired and replaced.

Max came out as scheduled on time to give me an estimate. We discussed what I wanted to do. He was very helpful and knowledgeable about the process of concrete stamping. What really impressed me with Max (owner) was he was very positive about obstacles that other contractors had shied away from. 1. Being I had a fence, other contractors wanted to charge for a pumper truck (+650.00) to pump the concrete into the forms. Max committed to doing it manually if necessary. 2. Other contractors recommended that I choose another material (wood, vinyl, composite) for the steps even though I wanted concrete. The steps were a lot of work (man hours/gravel/concrete). Max has successfully done commercial masonry, and doing the patio length, four steps of concrete was a non-issue for him. It took a couple of days to prepare the yard/forms, 40,000 lbs of gravel was brought in. He was smart enough to have his crew use a Georgia buggy to transport the gravel. The concrete was delivered on time. I'm sure there was a lot of manual work by his men on this job. 8 1/2 yards of concrete later, an adequate job of project clean up. I am totally happy with my new steps and two tier patio. This was a successful experience with a great professional guy and great crew. I highly recommend Midwest Masonry for your concrete needs. I offered this project to Angie's List concrete contractors. Compared to other estimates, Midwest Masonry was comparative. A special thanks to his worker who formed my steps. Great job!!

I requested quotes from 5 companies on Angie's List and received 4 responses and 3 quotes (job was too big for one company). Max was $500 less than the other 2 quotes I received so I decided to go with him based on price and other positive feedback on AL. He was very professional and always returned my calls and kept me informed on scheduling the job. He came out the day before to inspect everything and go over what I wanted before he started the next day. The workmanship is excellent and cannot imagine the other companies could have provided anything more in materials or quality to justify the additional $500 they quoted. I am very happy with Max and Mid West Masonry and will call on them again for any future concrete/masonry work.
