The carpenters at Sunrise Carpentry, Inc., are not competent. They installed the exterior doors that actually allow cold air into the residence. One door was installed leaning out from the frame so that it swings closed on its own. The screws in the door locks were installed with some kind of a hammer drill so that the screw heads were stripped. I had to call the lock manufacturer to try to get additional screws to make the lock function properly. The company is very expensive for the terrible work they do. A local handyman will do better. The actual work day is very short because they arrive late in the morning and eat breakfast. They usually leave early after lunch so not much gets done.
Description of Work: Remove and replace 6 exterior doors. Reinstall storm doors previously installed.
VERY POOR. THEY LITERALLY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO INSTALL DOORS, ESPECIALLY REINSTALLING AN EXISTING DOOR THAT THEY SMASHED WHEN REINSTALLING. THEY CHARGED MORE THAN THE CONTRACT PRICE SO THEIR CONTRACT MEANS LITTLE. THEY BROKE AN EXISTING DOOR BELL SYSTEM. THE BEST IS WHEN THEY GET ON THE JOB SITE AND THEN EAT BREAKFAST FOR AN HOUR. DID THAT CAUSE THE COST OVERRUN?
Description of Work: I HAD EXTERIOR DOORS INSTALLED.

We received an absurd estimate for $7100 to remove and replace a few rotting pillar trim/molding pieces for our front porch and basement door. The estimate included power washing and painting, which we didn't need. I asked Geoff @ Sunrise to take those 2 items out of the estimate (estimate was not broken out), and was told they couldn't because those 2 items were the bulk of the job. We had another Angie's List approved company take care of it for $750....$6350 less than what Sunrise was going to rob us for. $6350 for power washing and minimal painting???? 😂 Happy we avoided this company. Proceed with caution, and with getting other bids before using Sunrise.

Response from SUNRISE CARPENTRY, INC.
This review is completely off-base. Our estimate was for repair work and to completely restain/paint the front porch and basement door. The work he had completed was not the work we estimated for. I had emailed the customer to reconsider his review, which he did not. Below is our email conversion....please read it and judge for yourself: From Sunrise- "Hi [Member Name Removed], I hope all is well. I just read your Angie's List review and to be honest am pretty shocked. I will be responding to your review, but figured reaching out to you by email may change your mind. From our discussion, I estimated to complete the repair work and then re-stain the entire porch, railings, columns and basement door. Our estimate was not just minor repair and spot painting. Our estimates are broken down into line-by-line steps of the work proposed, it doesn't get more broken down than that. When repainting a whole porch we always power-wash, its by far the best method for a great finish. You had another company come in to do the minor repair work and painting....but the work you had completed, was not the work we had estimated for...so how exactly were we going to rob you? We didn't do anything bad to you, and yet you still give us a bad review. Bad reviews hurt local business, especially bad reviews that don't tell the whole story. We've been in business for 25 years and pride ourselves by doing great work and not taking advantage of people. We confirmed the estimate, I was on-time, got your estimate back to you and we even contacted you to confirm you received it....sounds awfully more responsive and professional than a 'D' I think that there really was just a miscommunication of what you actually wanted me to estimate for and what I provided you in the estimate. I ask you to reconsider your entire review of our company." Customer's Reply: "Hi Geoff. I asked you to take the painting and power washing out of the estimate, cause I was sure I could do it cheaper. I was told that you couldn't take it out as it was the bulk of the job, and wouldn't do the job without it. $7100 or nothing. The repairs were the only thing we were looking for in the first place. The company that did the job just did what we needed and I will take care of the rest. I couldn't imagine that it would cost $6k+ if they did do that additional work if I asked them to." Sunrise Reply: "Hi [Member Name Removed], What I said in my email was 'The power washing, painting & staining is 95% of the job. The job becomes very small removing those aspects from the estimate. Unfortunately, with our current workload being so busy, we will have to pass on estimating for just the repair work. I apologize for any inconvenience. If you already have a painter, your painter should be able to complete the minor repair work.' I broke the porch and basement door into two prices so you could choose one or both. If I had priced out just the repair work, you would be looking at around $875 + tax from our company. With our current workload of jobs already signed, you would have been looking at several weeks before I would be able to get anyone out to tackle your job, which I why I said we would have to pass on just the repair work. We don't mind if you hire someone else, it's your house and your money and your decision....but if you chose not to hire someone, why blast them with a bad review when all we did was provide you with am estimate of what we thought you wanted? Telling a customer that we are too busy to take on a small job like the minor repair work is the right thing to do, most contractors just never get back to the customer. I don't want to argue, life is too short, and I certainly don't want you to think we were trying to rob you. I do wish you the best and hope you'll reconsider your review."

They started in October 2013 but had to stop when the snows came. We did have to wait a couple of weeks for permits. They finished promptly when the ground became unfrozen in April. They were very professional and did an excellent job. They were a bit pricey but overall, it was an excellent experience.
Description of Work: A new deck was designed and built with TREX.
We had Geoff come in to do some small repairs and give us estimates on several larger repairs. He did a fine job and needed to come back to fix a shutter, which was our main priority. He wasn't able to accept payment when he left. I got a series of confusing estimates and an invoice and there was quite a bit of back and forth communication I got a very rude call from the office stating the bill was unpaid. I remembered writing out the check so I was confused. It turns out that my toddler had put my outgoing mail in his toy mailbox, along with several other pieces of outgoing mail and I had re-sent it the minute I found It along with an apology note. I called to explain what had happened and I got a very annoyed response saying, "You said you had mailed it on October 6th." I wasn't happy about the tone of the call, but I had certainly made a mistake and these people are right in my neighborhood, so I went in person after the call to give them a check so they wouldn't have to wait for the mail, I apologized in person, I had my toddler apologize and I offered to pay a $50 late fee. I hoped that would clear it up and we could move on and get my shutter repaired, siding repairs done and windows replaced. The person in the office didn't acknowledge my apology or my toddler's and told me that no more work could be done until my check was cleared as, "You didn't mail it when you said you would." She appeared very angry and asked for more money for a deposit for future work. It was very uncomfortable. It's certainly was her right not to accept the apology or to decide not to work with us again, but acting rudely to an apologetic customer handing you a check, then requesting more money for more work just seemed completely absurd. I should have just found someone else, but these people have been in business for 20 years, we have friends in common, shop at the same supermarkets, etc and I wanted to give them a chance, I emailed Geoff about the rudeness. He sent me an email that sounded very defensive responded part that, "She was simply doing her job" and let me know that he would personally shred my checks for future work when they arrived. I don't like writing bad reviews, especially about local business but these guys really earned their "F" grade for professionalism and I hope my review will spare someone else from having their day ruined by their rudeness. We have had a lot of contractors work on our house, we have made a lot of mistakes and our contractors have made a lot of mistakes. We respect the people who make their living working local homes, always work hard to resolve differences and expect professionals to do the same. I was very disappointed with the way this was handled.
Description of Work: Re-hung a door and made some small repairs around the house.
Brian, Danny, Alex and other Sunrise Carpentry personnel implemented the removal of all our windows and sliding doors that we had purchased from and which were delivered by Jilco. The Sunrise Carpentry Manager, Chad, came to our home to hear any concerns we had. All work was very neatly performed; they covered all floors and rugs with drop cloths and vacuumed and put back all furniture that they had moved daily. All debris was removed daily. We would highly recommend Sunrise Carpentry.
Description of Work: Removed existing aluminum sliding doors (2) and windows (14). Installed Marvin Integrity Windows and Sliding Doors that we provided, sealed, caulked, painted frames very professionally listening to and attending to all our concerns.

They are very prompt, I think. I can't compare their prices to anything because I have never had that type of thing done before. I thought they did a very good job with that. We had a little bit of a glitch where the door stuck but they did come back and fix that, eventually. So its fine. The workmen were extremely nice and very professional. The office staff that they have, I think her name is Joy, is wonderful to work with. She is very nice and Jeff was very prompt about coming over and so forth to look at it initially and so on. The price was the removal of the existing door, the door jam, installation of new door jams, a new solid wood door that had to be cut down to fit the opening, and the installation of a new lock. They did not paint it or anything. We painted it. The only glitch in this was this was supposed to be a pre-primed door and they did not provide a pre-primed door. They told me it did not come from the factory primed unless you paid an extra amount. I told them they should have told me that because I really had asked for the pre-primed door. So what they did was they took off the cost of the priming, that I would have paid to have the door pre-primed. So they took that off the final bill. That was one of the things that I had really been very specific about and it was on the estimate and so forth as being pre-primed so I was sort of upset about that. That they didn't originally say to me that the new door than what we were going to order doesn't fit your space. But they did take that off the final cost so I said that was acceptable. Other than that, everything was fine. I mean, I would recommend them. I think the pricing was probably reasonable. I had a backdoor put in maybe about 5 years ago and compared to the cost of that, for what they had to do, I would say they were comparable. I think there was a lot of work involved with this particular job. I didn't get any other bid so I can't say, in all honesty, whether they were reasonable or not. I feel for what they did, as far as I am concerned, that it was reasonable; that it wasn't way over priced.
Description of Work: They put in a basement door for me. Its a very old house and it was kind of a difficult thing to do because the wood framing for the door had to be taken out and they had to put new framing in up against stone! Its a stone foundation.

This is a follow up to my earlier posting. After just one winter the bulkhead has completely failed. They used nails not screws to create the door and as a result the wood has warped and come apart. Really, really shoddy work. Very disappointing, this was not cheap.

We met with several vendors about our deck before choosing Sunrise Carpentry (this was no small investment so we wanted to make sure we chose the right company). Geoff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and helped us choose the best materials for our deck, even meeting us on a Saturday at their showroom. Sunrise handled everything -- from the architect and the plans, to working with the building department on the necessary permits (even the unexpected one that came up at the last minute) and inspections -- and Geoff and Joy kept us posted every step of the way. The crew was excellent -- very clean (we have dogs and were concerned about debris in the yard) and polite, and also did an excellent job. The entire Sunrise team is fabulous and we will definitely use them again for future projects.

Started off well, very responsive and the initial work was completed on schedule. However it was not of the highest quality and I had to asked several times for them to come back and finish the job. They also ignored our paint instructions and the pain job failed (started to bubble) so they had to strip it off and start again. The screws they used rusted in about a week and they left unsightly nail gun holes in the woodwork which I asked them to fill several times. $2000 for a bulkhead door is a lot of money and I expected a higher standard of craftsmanship and finishing. Average work.

Response from SUNRISE CARPENTRY, INC.
We were hired to build a custom cedar cellar door for an old home (late 1700s). Our employees constructed the custom cellar door, not a sub-contractor. The contract that was signed included painting of the cellar door with a Benjamin Moore product (not staining). The customer, after the fact, wanted the cellar doors to be stained. In an email from the customer, the customer requested that we use an oil-base primer and then an Opaque stain for durability and longevity. The customer was following advice given to her from a hardware store, however, she was given incorrect information. If you apply a primer to a wood, you are limited to paint or a solid stain. An Opaque stain will stain the wood while still allowing you to see the graining of the cedar. Because the customer requested an oil-base primer be applied, we accommodated. The finish of the stain, Opaque, Semi-Solid, or Solid, all have the same durability and longevity; one does not last longer than the other, it just provides different looks to the stain (in the graining). The only kind of clear primer available isn’t a primer, it is called 'wood conditioner', which is simply used to condition the wood so that the stain is absorbed more evenly. Construction of a cedar cellar door sounds simple; but when you are retro-fitting a new cellar door to an old stone foundation from the 1700s, nothing is simple. The hardware screws should not have started to rust, but unfortunately they did and we corrected the problem when we were informed of the issue. “Disconnect between supervisors promise and the work carried out” – Thank you for bringing this to our attention - we will address this. We always want to hear positive feedback; however, we understand that not every single job will go smoothly. We appreciate negative feedback as well (of course we wish is wasn't negative) it informs us that something needs to be addresses and/or improved…feedback in general helps us improve to be better able to serve our valued customers. Pricing: $1,975 for a customer built clear cedar door, with hardware and painting is a fair price and we stand behind that. Not every job will go smoothly, but we do our best to keep customers happy. This is a business where Murphy’s Law always comes into play…it’s how one addresses the situation that defines companies. 2014 will be our 20th year in business. A company doesn't make it to 20 years by ignoring customers and over-charging for ‘average’ work. We stand behind our work.

The job went as expected and the doors came out great
Description of Work: Installed interior closet doors
They started the work only a few days after we signed the contract. The project took a little longer than we expected, but that was often because a vendor wasn't ready to deliver products (kitchen cabinets, shower door, for example). Every step went through inspection, and they passed without a problem. I was excited to check out the progress every night, and I was always impressed!
Description of Work: Sunrise Carpentry turned our unfinished cement basement into a beautiful lower floor. They were experts in listening to what we wanted to do with the space and turning that into a plan and a reality. We now have a beautiful kitchenette, full bathroom, bedroom/gym, play room, and great room. They designed it in such a way that we still have a large unfinished area for general storage, oil tanks, well bladder, boiler, and AC/heat units. Beautiful closets were created in the new living space. Tile work in the kitchenette and bathroom are incredibly well done; walls are straight, dry wall and taping done flawlessly. They were very easy to work with, and we completely trusted them in our house while we weren't home. Their opinions on design, style, layout, etc are also very good. The electricians and painters they used for our project were also fantastic. They are pricier than other companies, but you really get what you pay for. They are worth every penny! We will hire them for any home project from now on!

They were very wonderful, the entire crew and I have nothing to say but positive comments. Even their office staff was pleasant, attentive and professional. I recommend this company highly.

I contacted Sunrise to get an estimate on building a deck, roughly 10 x 12 feet. Although their initial visit was punctual and their estimate was reasonable, when it came time for the work to be done they were nowhere to be found. Three times they contacted me to arrange for a start date and three times they cancelled. Four months after the original estimate they dared to call again, this time leaving me a message that they were ready to start work the next day. I suppose they expected me to be grateful, but by then the deck had already been built. Unbelievable. I have since heard similar stories involving this firm, so do yourself a favor and steer clear.
