We asked Sila to provide an estimate for the cost of rearranging the existing air duct sytstem in our attic so that we could build a playroom there. The representative waslate the first time, and missed us, but apologized profusely and went out of his way to get back there the same day. The estimate was pricier than we expected, but we didn't know what to expect, so maybe it is perfectly fine. In any event, the estimate was timely and the follow up was great. Overall, if we decide to do this project, we will use Sila,

The actual work that was performed was fine; the technician behaved in a professional manner. Conclusion: If you have disposable income, and don't mind spending it unnecessarily, you won't have a problem with them.
Description of Work: I've used this company for two years for routine seasonal tune-ups; no problems. But on two occasions I needed extra services, and that's when it became clear that their prices are unreasonably high. In the first instance, a UV bulb in the airhandler needed to be replaced. Sila wanted $450 for labor and parts. The job is literally as easy as replacing a standard lightbulb. On the internet the bulb costs about $65 (from reputable brands and suppliers). When I asked Sila why they charged so much, they replied that they charge $175/hour and their technicians are highly trained and insured. I decided to do it myself and it literally took me 30 seconds to replace the bulb!!! (That was seven months ago; no problems with the bulb since then). In the second instance, a faulty relay board needed to be replaced. They quoted me $598 plus tax. They told me the price consists of the part (about $240) and they estimated it would take 1.5 to 2 hours to install. I agreed, given that the job is well beyond my skillset. The technician came and did the job in less than 40 minutes. When I called the company to ask why I'm being charged for 2 hours when the job took only 40 minutes, they explained that it is a set price. I understand that 40 minutes counts as 1 hour, and have no problem paying for that. BUT a 2 hour charge????!!! I think they have a right to make a profit, and a good living. But they're NOT entitled to engage in price gouging! So this is how they make their money: they offer coupons for discounted routine maintenace checks, but anything beyond that is likely to cost you an arm and a leg.

They installed the furnace incorrectly so when we started using it we realized it was not working. They came back two or three weeks later and installed it correctly. The people who come out to review the situation are probably the most expert but the people that come out to do the actual installation must be subcontractors. They did not speak English very well and I think that was part of the problem with the install the first time. When we called with any problems they got back to us quickly but when they were supposed to come out to work there were two or three cancellations at the last minute; so they would have to come out again. My husband got worried that it was some kind of scan but I did not feel that way. Each time something needed to be fixed they would send a different person out; which was frustrating. I think they are reputable but I don't think I will use them again.

Subsequent to the hot water tank purchase I called them back to fix a problem with my boiler. I asked them to come to give me an estimate, they agreed. The mechanic came and sat in my driveway for at least a half hour talking on the phone. When he finally came in he estimated the work to replace a boiler sight glass to be in the hundreds of dollars because he wanted to replace several pipes along with the sight glass. He claimed they no longer could get a sight glass to fit the dimensions of my boiler. He then tried to charge me for a service call. I reminded him that I had only asked for an estimate which I repeated when he entered my house. When he left my house he again sat in the driveway for at least a half hour before leaving. Later the company billed me for a service call based upon the bogus time estimate the mechanic gave them. I protested and they voided the charge. I then called in another plumber who fitted the jagged sight glass properly so that my boiler would become serviceable again. He just charged me for the service call. I took the old sight glass to a plumbing store who then cut me a new sight glass of the proper dimensions. The sight glass was about $10. I would use them again for the purchase of a hot water heater but not for plumbing.
Description of Work: Had a hot water heater installed for a good price. I do not recall how much, it was a year ago. That work was fine, however subsequent to the hot water tank purchase I called them back to fix a problem with my boiler. That story is below.

I'm so disappointed in Sila. I've used Sila (formerly Unique) for the past 7 years. I moved into a new home in the Fall and my water heater started putting out water from the relief pipe. I called Sila and they sent a totally incompetent tech to my home, who said water wasn't coming from the relief pipe (it was, and I told him it was), and put a bucket under it. He tried to sell me a contract on my A/C unit. I called Sila back and they sent their manager who replaced the relief valve. It didn't solve the problem. He came back for a third visit and replaced the relief pipe, and then did some work to partially repair a hole in my flue piping. Only after the flue work was done did he tell me that he couldn't fix the entire stretch of pipe. And, of course, the heater was still leaking. I ended up calling in another plumber who immediately noticed that the expansion tank was full and malfunctioning, and also identified that we needed a water pressure control valve. Sila totally missed the boat, and I won't be using them again.
Description of Work: Attempted to diagnose issue with water heater (3 times) Fixed hole in flue from furnace

I called first called Sila in the morning on November 16th. They came that same in the afternoon which was great. Juan diagnosed the problem which was my mother board was burnt out. He also said the furnace was from 1989 which I found impossible to believe since my house was built in 1994. He really tried to convince me that I needed to buy a new furnace and he could have a salesperson come out to see me in a day or two. I decided that I wasn't going to jump into buying a new furnace without doing some homework first. I asked him to please order the necessary parts while I investigate further the need for a new furnace. I called Lennox, the manufacturer and found out that my furnace was from February 1995 - which made a lot more sense. It also made me feel a little better about my decision to fix only what was broken. I've read a couple of other reviews where customers have had a similar experience with the same technician so Sila really should consider addressing this issue. On November 21st Steve came to install the new mother board. He was great - right on time - very professional - explained what was needed and why - and confirmed as did Lennox that I should be able to get a couple more years out of the furnace. In the end, I spent $750 versus up to $5000 which at this time of year was welcome news.
Description of Work: Sila replaced the mother board in my furnace and had a consultation with me about a new furnace which I ended up not needed at this point. This is an area that is solely driven by the manufacturers (who don't keep any pricing information) and the service providers who install and repair the products. You really have to spend some time doing your homework and checking independent websites to get the most from a purchase, repair, or service experience.

This is the 2nd year I had Sila tune-up my natural gas water boiler, the furnace that heats my house. What a relief it is to know I found people I can rely on on a regular basis to take care of my house's heating operations. In both annual appointments the Sila technicians that came to my house had remarkably good interpersonal skills, as they answered all my questions with authority and seemed genuinely committed to making sure I grasped everything they were trying to explain to me. They always come on time, and seem in no rush to finish fast to get on to the next job. They're honest, informed, and easy to talk to. That was especially the case with Juan, this year's technician. He really educated me on my boiler's features and functions. He was masterful. I am very happy I now have Sila Heating & Air Conditioning to rely on for my heating and cooling needs.

I called Sila to perform routine maintenance on my two furnaces. Juan arrived and I left him to do the maintenance while I quickly ran to the post office. When I returned Juan informed me that I needed a new furnace. I was a bit surprised as we had replaced this furnace after moving here 12 years ago and I did not expect that it would die before the other heater. Juan explained that he "felt a crack" on the heat exchanger and that this meant I needed a new furnace. Juan told me Marco would call with pricing and that they might be able to fit me in for a new furnace right away. I told him I would be getting bids as this was a 6K-10K job. I checked around because I did not feel comfortable with the diagnostics Sila provided. Finally, Harold at T&H told me not only would my heat exchanger have a warranty, first company to share that news with me, but also that the gas company would do a check - unswayed by the opportunity to sell me a furnace as they only maintain. Long story short, CNG told me I did not need a furnace. Thank goodness I had them check. I WILL NEVER USE SILA AGAIN! I believe they purposefully deceived me in order to make a sell and even if it was not purposeful deceit, much more careful testing and diagnostics should be taken before trying to sell someone such an expensive piece of equipment.
Description of Work: Sila came to perform routine annual service on both of my furnaces. They did perform the service on one unit. They shut down my second unit telling me I needed a new furnace and it could not be serviced. TURNS OUT I DID NOT NEED A NEW UNIT!

BAD and I will see about bringing this to court since I don't feel I should have to pay for a poorly installed unit.
Description of Work: Watch out, I thought they where good, I had them replace a complete AC unit a couple years ago. The AC unit my contractor installed was not that good and broke. Sila was hired to replace the compressor, pipes and air handler, a complete replacement. This October we had a major leak from the AC unit. They claimed the painters who power washed the house clogged the drainage unit. That might be so but the reason we had major damage done (USD 7000 to repair) was because the unit when installed was not done properly. They did not put in a new drain but used an existing condensate pump and the original drainage pan (both which I understand are not best practice). They also did not install and auto shut off systems (see photo of open pipe) and the pan under the unit was bent (this was stated in the repair work form after we called them to help with the leaking) so the second fail safe system (water sensor) did not work either. Since only Sila has serviced the unit since it was installed, I assume the pan was bent when they installed the air handler and since I was paying for a complete replacement, should have been changed. Further the tech who repaired the unit after it leaked, wrote it was the wrong pan.....and suggested a different configuration. I just called and spoke to a Mr. Chris McGuire and he said that the installed the unit as per the contract. I asked if it was stipulated that the drainage system and drip pan would not be replaced, he said know but that was my issue, they did the job. Its my view that I contracted a complete replacement and that would include installing a drainage system that was standard - the only thing I was not replacing was the existing duct work. When I had my son's closets, the hall and the floor gutted, i call another firm highly recommended by a friend and they sited the bent pan and an open pipe coming from the unit and said it was missing a basic part that would have shut down the unit in the case of drainage problem. There clearly is a T where on pipe sticks strait up and it open, I assume they forgot to put this piping on or forgot to close it and unfort, Angie's list does not support photos.

Response from Sila Heating, Cooling and Plumbing
As the Customer states the power washers may have clogged the unit. However, when we tested the drain in the spring of 2012, as is procedure, it was fully operational. The a/c ran all summer without incident and only after other contractors performed work at the home did a problem arise. Sila Heating and Air Conditioning cares deeply about our customers and strives to deliver the highest level of customer service.

Juan came out to perform the service today. He was very punctual, even called to say he would be just a few minutes late because of traffic. He took the time to put on shoe covers when ever he entered the house - I think this shows attention to detail. He explained the service he was going to perform and recommended I replace the thermocouple since it should be done every other year and a new one is much cheaper than an emergency service call if it fails. He spent a little over an hour testing, servicing and cleaning the furnace. We discussed a service contract but he was not overly pushy about it as some companies are. I am very happy with the service and think it was a better value with similar or better quality compared to companies I've used in the past. They offer great discounts and "Big Deals" to Angie's List customers. I will certainly be giving them a call when it comes time to get the central air ready for the season.

They were courteous and clean. Each time they took off their shoes and wore booties. (Sounds stupid but it makes a difference)
Description of Work: Our AC/Heater wasn't working so I called a different company (see my review of Solvit) to come look at it. They gave me a $2800 estimate for a new mother board and 2 rotators for the two zones and a lot of sales pressure to get secure the job. I got cold feet and went to Angies list. Sila came highly recommended. I called them and they were here that afternoon. Two reps looked it over and said I only needed one new rotator, the rest was in fine order. They had to order the part and came out the following week to install it. Two more reps came out but it still wasn't the right part so we had to postpone the work. The following week yet another reprosentative came but he had to wait 3 hours for another van to come with an additional part. This is the reason I gave them a "C" on professionalism. They should have been better prepared with this part and not sent a different team each time to relearn the system.

On the first visit on August 31,Sila representative, Juan Saquicela, first performed a very thorough inspection of my heating and air conditioning system. He was very articulate and explained everything in detail. After I contracted for the service contract I scheduled the winter service appointment. Note that the price of $1000 was an annual contract including winter and summer service on my heating (3 zone), air conditioning, humidifier and air cleaning unit. Costs for all parts are included in the contract. The winter servicing took place on September 20th. I had requested Juan Saquicela and he arrived on time and spent 3 hours servicing my equipment. He was very thorough and again explained all work in detail. Everything about my experience was positive. Very professional from first contact on phone to completion of service.
