Martin Kaptein Siding

This experience was exceptional from the estimate to the final clean up. As a home repairs contractor I am very meticulous about the work done on my home and am very detail oriented with regards to how the work is performed. Kapstein Siding met and exceeded all my expectations. Marty was very patient and answered all my questions when he showed up (on time) for the estimate. He helped to figure out a few challenges on the house where the new siding would replace some original detail and offered his opinion about color and window trim. He started the job on time and completed as promised. His workers were polite and professional. The job site was cleaned up each day prior to them leaving and care was taken to keep things picked up during the day. I am extremely satisfied with the job and would unconditionally recommend Matin Kapstein Siding to anyone looking to side their home.

I had called Martin for an estimate on residing my house. He called back in a timely manner and was out in the same week to do the estimate. He also provided some good tips and ideas of what I could do. In the meantime, with the high winds we had, some of the siding blew off the house. I called Martin the next morning to get the job started, and he got back to me the same day. He came out to my home immediately to remove any siding still hanging and made sure everything was okay, which I thought was a very nice thing to do. Martin worked with me on colors and style. He matched up colors to houses, drove by a couple homes I gave him to look at, and he put together the look I was attempting to get. To me, he went out of his way. If you asked him for his opinion, he gave it. I didn't get the general... its all personal preverance answer. From when he started the job, he was finished in a week. The job included replacing all the outdoor light fixtures and doorbells. Also, if you told him something, it was done. You only had to tell him once. My neighbors were impressed by how fast the job went and they loved my house. Martin and his crew did an excellant job. They were friendly, professional and clean up was done well. I would definately recommend Martin Kaptein.

Marty and his team sided my cape cod home in less than a week. They arrived on time, were professional and did a good job at clean up. All questions that I had were answered promptly and to my satisfaction.

Martin returned my initial phone call promply and gave an estimate over the phone for work to be done and a timeline for installation. He did an excellent job of removing the old board installing and caulking the new board .He offered to touch up the nails and caulk with stain but I decided to wait until spring and do it myself. Under mutual agreement I purchased the board which was delivered with to many defects and needed to be reordered. Martin was agreeable to delay installation for one week.

When I first contacted Martin, I told him that I was NOT interested in the standard el-cheapo simulated narrow-board clapboard siding that covers so many homes. He acknowledged that and showed up with samples of other types of siding, including both vinyl and fiber-cement types; he advised us to visit the distributor to see more options and colors, which we did. He gave us an initial estimate for both the and quot;cheap stuffand quot; (should we decide to go that way) and the premium siding we ultimately chose. The estimate was initially for simple removal of the existing aluminum siding, but I decided, prior to the start of the job, to pull the original siding off as well...I notified him and he said he had no problem, and that he'd just add $700 to the estimate, which he did. When dealing with Martin, one must understand a few things: First, he's right there with his crew doing the work...this is not an absentee contractor, and second, he's smart, funny, and VERY direct...he says what he thinks, and if you're sensitive you may be taken aback (he's not shy about telling you whether your choices are aesthetically pleasing, LOL!). On the other hand, this is a man you can work with on the basis of handshake alone...he does what he says he'll do, does his best to do it when he says he'll do it, and he does it to the best of his ability because it's HIS name on the truck. His schedule pushed the start date out a few weeks, but he called, as promised, a few days prior to tell us when he'd be there, what to do to prepare (take stuff off walls and shelves that might fall due to the pounding on the exterior of the house), and who to expect. He was easily within his estimated time when he actually arrived. Worthy of a separate line in this review is the fact that he did not require ANY kind of payment to begin the job. It took about four days to complete the majority of the job. The shutters we'd originally ordered turned out to be the wrong size (WE measured incorrectly...not his fault) and turned out to be not what we'd expected, design-wise. He re-ordered a different design (and the proper size), and one of his crew showed up promptly to install them when they arrived. It was at this point that he requested a 2/3 payment for work completed. A few days later, after we'd had a chance to look things over and make a list of things we wanted him to look at (it was a short list!), he came by (on a Saturday) and spent a couple of hours installing a white backing board for our illuminated house numbers, tweaking a couple of minor installation issues, answering questions, sharing a cup of coffee (he likes it STRONG...which is good, because we do too), adjusting the pitch on a gutter (that had been installed by a different contractor), and generally making sure we were happy with the job. The original estimate still holds (including the extra $700 for total tear-off, noted above), in spite of window box and house number installations and gutter adjustments that were never part of the original deal. Do we have any complaints? A few minor observations...not complaints, really. - It would have been nice to see more brochures without having to go to the distributor to pick them up, and samples of the shutters might have made re-ordering unnecessary (if we'd measured properly!). - Martin is a master at dead-pan humor...don't take him too seriously unless you're absolutely certain that he's serious. He's not one of those laid-back people who schmooze...he's a busy man, and while he'll take time to make sure you're satisfied, my impression is that he won't suffer fools or prima donnas lightly. He has no problem telling you that your choice of color or style may not be something he'd have chosen, but he's just trying to save you from yourself, and we found most of his ideas and suggestions to be well-advised; as I've noted above, it's HIS name on the truck, and he wants the finished product to look good. We've found that the good ratings he's gotten here on Angie's List are well-deserved. We gave him a and quot;Band quot; on price because, well, things could ALWAYS be cheaper, right?! We do think we got a fair deal, however.

I called Martin Kaptein to get a quote for two minor siding repairs. He called back the same day and gave me a quote over the phone. While it surprised me that he gave a quote without seeing the work that needed to be done, he further explained they had done this type of repair enough times to be fairly accurate with the quote and that, upon showing up for the appointment, if the needed work was more extensive than he thought, I could cancel the appointment. He also said giving quotes this way allowed him to do the work less expensively than someone else. I was satisfied with this response. Because I found him to have an and quot;Aand quot; rating on Angie's List with 15 reports, I scheduled an appointment for and quot;first thing (8am) three Saturdays out. The Tuesday before the scheduled appointment, I called to confirm the appointment date/time. Mr. Kaptein returned the call and confirmed the date and time. The night before the scheduled appointment, Mr. Kaptein called me to again confirm the appointment, mentioning the workers would be a little late (8:30 or so) and asked if that was OK. I said if they were to get there much past 8:30, I'd start stressing a little as I had another appointment later (at 12 noon). This is where Mr. Kaptein's unprofessionalism and lack of customer service began to show themselves, and the conversation took on an adverserial tone. Having spoken with me for all of two minutes at this point, he said I was and quot;uptight and controllingand quot; and that and quot;I didn't even have to be there to have the work doneand quot;. I replied, and quot;Yes, I doand quot;. And he asked, and quot;Why?and quot; I replied, and quot;Because I'm the homeowner, and that's the way I do itand quot; (choose to be present when work is being done on the house). He stated he wasn't comfortable doing the work for someone and quot;controllingand quot;. I then told him I found him on Angie's List, and I was not pleased with this turn of events and found this to be poor customer service. I reiterated that I'd like him to do the work, and asked if he was sure this is the way he wanted to handle the transaction? He said it was. I've lived long enough to have learned some things: 1) Contractors don't always do what they say they'll do, and 2) People don't always tell you the truth. For example, perhaps Mr. Kaptein just now realized he had no and quot;workersand quot; available to do the job on a Holiday weekend or he took a look at the work (without my knowledge) and saw that it involved a bit more work than he anticipated while giving an over-the-phone quote? Mr. Kaptein, I don't appreciate being and quot;bulliedand quot;; You're fired!

Marty and his team were punctual, friendly and reliable. Marty came recommended by a neighbor who had him install siding several years before and it still looked wonderful. His bid was very competitive with the other bids we received and he was finished with our 2400 sq. foot house in about a week. We would call on him again in a heartbeat!

Martin Kaptein Siding was great. They started and finished on time and with quality and professionalism. Martin kept in touch with me personally at every stage of the project. It was bitter cold on some days while they were installing the siding, but they still showed up and got the job done on schedule. when they were done, i could not tell they had been there, except for the quality job. They cleaned up everything. I would recommend them for any siding job.

Martin Kaptein was very straight-forward and did not try to over-sell anything. The price he quoted was very reasonable. He started and finished the job on schedule and the work was first rate. Marty was at the site and worked with his crew. He did everything he promised and more, responding to all our additional requests pleasantly and promptly, without any extra charge. He and his crew came to work early, around 7:30 am. They were very professional, kept the work area clean and organized, and did not play loud music. Marty's attention to detail was impressive, and he was always willing to accommodate our requests. Overall this was a pleasant experience and we were completely satisfied. We have no hesitation in giving him our total and unreserved recommendation.

He is actually going to start the work tomorrow. He was very upfront. He came in and measured. He talked to me about what I was looking for. He gave me a price that was completely in line with the others. There was one which I think was a $100 less. There was kind of a really nice personable way about him. I got good recommendations from neighbors. It was kind of a no brainer. There was nothing about him that sent shock waves up. I was out of town and then I got back. I called him with a question regarding the soffit. He said that we can put in as many as we wanted and there was no change in price for that. I was very pleased. He said that I didn't need to replace the doors when another contractor said that I had to.

Great! The work was done quickly and excellently. I am very pleased with the result. Marty and I have been on the phone since he finished, and we're already planning to work together to complete other projects in the house. I highly recommend him.

Mr. Kaptein was highly professional. He came to give an estimate for siding our 1929 colonial in Brighton. What an honest guy. He didn't try to sell us on anything, but rather, explained the pros and cons of siding vs. painting the shingles. He answered all our questions, wrote up and mailed a nice quote and even looked at the garage and offered advice on that as well. We did not use him, as we decided to paint, rather than side the house, but I think he was quiet professional and would recommend him.

I contacted Martin Kaptein Siding and left a voicemail message detailing the work that we wanted completed. I received a return phone call later that evening and they scheduled the repair work for a Saturday morning approximately ten days out, which was completely acceptable. Unfortunately, I had to be out of town that Saturday morning and after contacting them at the last minute to confirm our appointment, they arrived in a prompt manner. The siding repair work went better than expected as the contractor stated that the siding had simply slide and he was able to reuse the existing piece of siding. They also completed the installation of the oversized mounting blocks and did an excellent job. They even took it one step further by installing the light fixtures we purchased even though I had not requested that service. They tested to ensure that everything worked properly and cleaned everything up prior to leaving. And they came in under the original quoted price of $150. I was impressed with their professionalism and the quality of the work completed. I would definitely recommend their services and will use them again in the future.

We interviewed 3 different contractors based upon Angies list recommendations. We went with Marty because he seemed the most honest and no-nonsense (for example, the other salesmen went along with our notion that new siding would add some margin of insulation to our old 1930's uninsulated house; Marty came right out and said it would add no measurable benefit wrt insulation esp when compared to just insulating the house). His estimate was not the lowest but we liked the fact that he was personally invovled with evey job, and he was. They installed during winter despite all the snow and cold. He returned all of my calls promptly. He offered to come by on Saturday after we realized he disconnected our outdoor cable box. Even 7 months after work was completed he returned to fix a few pieces of trim that had blown off after an earlier very violent windstorm. Perhaps my only negetive comments were all the large nails we found after the snow melted, but he did warn us and told us to call him when the snow was gone so he cold come by with a magnet to collect them. Also, our property had several cigarette butts scattered about. Update 6/4/13: I have called Martin twice now for small touch ups and repairs, especially after big storms with high winds. He continues to honor his 5 year guarantee. He is quick to respond to my calls comes by in a timely fashion!

After reading about Martin's work on Angie's list, I called him and left a message. He called back within a very reasonable timeframe. He showed up when he said he would. He listened very carefully to our wishes and concerns. My husband is a stickler about work done on our house (he usually does it himself.) He was particularly concerned about the careful and fastidious wrapping of the window trims. Not only did Martin listen carefully to us, he also suggested other approaches to getting the look we wanted, even as far as recommending the particular color for the siding and trim. He followed through right away on 2-3 references for him, and houses to look at to help us make final decisions on siding combinations and color. Long story short, after our own research and experimentation with samples, we realized he was 'right on' when it came to both the color we should pick and the use of certain siding combinations we were contemplating. His price was very competitive. He ended up being able to do the job a few days ahead of his original estimate of timetable. He and his helpers were prompt, courteous and tidy. More importantly, we were VERY satisfied with the outcome. His trim job, in particular, was approved by my husband which says a lot about how good Martin and his team are. Overall I highly recommend Martin Kaptein Siding for any task for which they advertise. I would assume he and his workers would handle these jobs in the same professional manner as they handled ours.

The work went off very smoothly. He always responded quickly. He was unobtrusive and worked quickly. He was very friendly and polite. He was always ready to answer all our questions.

I had a very good experience with this company. They were able to provide a price range for the repairs and set a date right over the phone. The morning of the appointment I received a confirmation phone call and he arrived shortly thereafter. The repairs we done correctly by replacing wood shingles and the new shingles were painted using the exterior paint that I had provided. He was very professional and even took the time to go over some general information about our siding us. I would definitely contact them again for siding work.

I received quotes from 7 different siding contractors. I chose Martin Kaptein for several reasons, 1) price was very competitive, 2) good feedback on Angie's List, and 3) I really liked Marty after having met him during the quotation process. After seeing the job they did I can't say enough good things about Marty and the work of his crew. They arrived early each day (~7:30am) and finished around 5:00. At the end of each day they did a fantastic job cleaning up and kept their scrap and new material very organized throughout the day. The crew was personable, respectful, (no foul language or loud music), and a delight to have around the house. Most of all the quality of their work and attention to detail went way beyond my expectations. I've lost count of the positive comments I received from neighbors and friends who have seen the house. Marty and his crew did an excellent job tearing off our old siding and putting up insulation board, new siding, trim, storm door and gutters. They cleaned up the site each night and the price was great.

Martin and his crew were great. They did the job professionally, on-time and reliably. All his employees were respectful of ourselves and our property. They wrapped all the window frames in aluminum and it looks great. We are very happy with them and their work. On the last day of the job, we grilled lunch for Martin and the crew! Never thought about that for a contractor before!

I have a 2400 square foot house that is build on a hill so it's 3 stories tall in the back. Martin and his crew completed the job in a week! They were at my house, ready to work by 8:30 or so every morning. They were respectful of me and my family as they worked and didn't mind talking to the children about what they were doing every step of the way. They were careful of the landscaping around the house, cleaned up the site every day before they left, and were very patient with me as I changed my mind about which light fixtures to put where! They also re-wired the garage lights so that there were two lights on either side of the garage instead of one light over the garage door.

They did an excellent job. They arrived when they said they would, did the job in the time they said it would take. They cleaned up after themselves every day, never leaving a mess. Martin is a friendly gentleman and it was a pleasure dealing with him and our house looks great.

I was very pleased with the work. The crew were professional, courteous and neat. They came when they said they would come and were done in 4 days. I highly recommend this contractor.
