My wife and I contracted with Brett Hotaling to install a block patio, fire pit and short stone wall late in the summer of 2011. Mr. Hotaling still has not fully completed the project as of July 19, 2013. The project was supposed to be completed in a few weeks. It was started in late August of 2011 but the bulk of the work was not completed until November. Mr. Hotaling would call to say he would be here on specific days but usually did not show up for several weeks or months. He called me in late April of 2013 and said that he would be here the following Monday to fix all of the outstanding issues. To date he has not shown up or called. In the process of doing the work, much of my lawn was heavily damaged from the equipment. To date, the lawn has not been fully restored in spite of asurances from Mr. Hotaling that it would be. As far as completion of the project, there were a few issues. 1. The block patio area outside of the living room was never prepped with top soil or seeded. We ended up doing this ourselves. 2. The pavers in the patio area outside of the living room are still high and it is ruining the weather stripping on the bottom of the storm door. Mr. Hotaling had assured me that he would recompact them when I mentioned this in November of 2011 but it is still an unresolved issue. 3. The "top soil" used to replaced areas of the damaged lawn was of very poor quality. It was very sandy and silty with little evidence of it actually being top soil. Grass planted in this poor top soil did not grow well at all. A lot of the top soil settled or washed away exposing the compacted gravel and leaving unlevel surfaces. 4. Grass and weeds started growing through the spaces between the pavers in May of 2012 and continues to do so. It was my understanding that the Polymeric sand would prevent this from happening. We have been using a lot of weed killer to control the grass and weeds. 5. I am not happy with the look of the cap stones on the ends of the retaining wall. I thought that the end stones would have a more natural looking finish rather than the raw cut edge. Gaps are appearing in retaining wall which I fear is an indication of settling due to poor workmanship. I wish that I could upload pictures to show problems and quality of work.
