The layout of the basement is perfect -- very roomy with plenty of storage. The finishes are great and the furniture pieces are perfect. Everyone who's seen our basement is instantly jealous. This was a tricky project because it had to suit my husband's taste and gaming hobbies. It fulfills his needs without looking like a "man cave."
Description of Work: Julie helped me come up with a layout for our basement finishing project, then helped select finishes and sourced the furniture.

Julie is a gem. If you can get her (she's in high demand!) grab her. She's the 3rd designer I have tried and the only one I'd ever go back to. What I love most is her aesthetic. She really has gorgeous taste. Also she is willing to work within your budget and doesn't insist that every piece be "designer". On the last job we did with her, the master, my husband and I had polar opposite tastes. One wanted dark woods and deep colors. The other evisioned an all white serene spa aesthetic. Julie heard us both and made us both happy with a warm "swanky hotel" look that neither of us imagined but both of us totally love!! She takes her time and let's the room develop organically re-evaluating at each step of the process. If you want an overnight TV show makeover then Julie may not be for you. But if you want an exquisite, refined design that you will absolutely love then You can stop looking. Julie White is it.
Description of Work: Master bedroom most recently. Prior jobs she did include re-renovating master bath after another designer did a bad job, as well as entryway/foyer, basement, playroom all of which started as a bare builder grade white.

WOW. Thank you for such a descriptive and enthusiastic review! Of all of the work we've done together on your home, your master bedroom was my absolute fave. Creating a feeling that spoke to both you and your hubby (since you were coming from completely different places) is my favorite kind of challenge. My goal was to design a space for you to come "home" to at the end of your busy days. More importantly maybe, was creating something that made you feel like relaxing and connecting in the most luscious and luxurious way! I couldn't be more thrilled that you feel I brought your collective vision to life. It was a total pleasure and adventure, as always. THANK YOU. Xo

We recently bought an old house, built in 1867, and are about to renovate the first floor kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. I have a clear idea of how I envision the space, but I enlisted Julie's help because I wanted a professional to provide feedback on my design ideas. Julie was incredibly helpful that way. I immediately felt that I could trust her judgement, as I listened to her feedback and was able to visualize and understand exactly what she was talking about. As I continue to make further decisions, I plan on further enlisting her help.
Description of Work: Julie came for an initial consultation visit to my house.

With this firm, delivery dates for plans, follow-up appointments and return calls were delayed, delayed and delayed. We started the process in the summer of 2013 and in November/December (after her diagnosis that she refers to in responding to other reviews) we had made arrangements to meet; calls were not returned and "I don't have your email" were common excuses from Julie. If those are her excuses, send a letter or drop a note at the mailbox--she'd been to the home more than once! I paid for the initial visit, paid again for a plan (which I don't have though I've been told by her and her former contractor they were "completed and just being reviewed"), nor has she returned my architect plans that I provided to her. Also in the midst of this time, many of the professional service providers (e.g., general contractor, assistant) who she brought to my home no longer works with her. While Julie may be a nice person, this is a business engagement. She needs to keep appointments, call when she says she will and deliver. Very disappointed.
Description of Work: Julie was to design and delver plans to redesign a master bath; we planned to utilize her team of contractors/service providers for the build.

Response from Julie White Interiors, Ltd.
[member name removed], Let me begin by saying I'm sorry that our collaboration didn't work out as hoped. No matter what else happens, when I take a client on it’s with the intention of delivering above and beyond their expectations. Obviously, with you this was not the case, so in that I failed. Consistent with the other review you mentioned, my diagnosis and health did get in the way. As with that review this is not an excuse, simply an explanation. Subsequently, I have changed my business model to ensure that my clients are fully supported and that I maintain the high level quality of work for which my company is known. As for your various points let me address them one by one: First, you posted a work completed date of December 31st, 2013. However, there was never work contracted or performed and therefore there was never work completed. You hired me for an initial consultation and a follow-up visit. No proposal was ever submitted to you (a noted delay) and whatever your plans may have been, I was never hired for the full project. Second, you have listed that the approximate project cost was $35,000. This is somewhat misleading. In fact, there was a very specific cost and it was $400 paid to me in two installments for my two site visits. $35,000 was the project budget you suggested, not the project cost. With regard to appointments, I never missed one appointment with you. For that matter, I was on time to both of the two meetings we had. At the second meeting I brought a team of contractors all of whom were also on time. For this, you gave me a D in punctuality which I feel is unfair. You said that I did not return the architect plans that were provided. As you never requested I return them, I assumed they were copies that I could keep in your file. That said, I’m happy to return whatever copies I have immediately. As well, I have a new space plan drawn out for which you were never charged. I’m also happy to send you that at no cost, if it would be useful. You wrote that “in the midst of this time, many of the professional service providers (e.g., general contractor, assistant) who she brought to my home no longer works with her.” In truth, I still work with all of the contractors I brought to your job site; One of the contractors I brought was not the right fit for your project which is why I suggested moving forward in a different way with another member of my team who I was very excited about working with moving forward. As far as my assistant, she and I worked together for nearly 9 years before we parted ways amicably. My current assistant Rich, was brought on immediately in our second meeting and maintained a relationship with you throughout. However, what I assume you are suggesting is that I don’t play well with others. In fact, second to my talent for design, my ability to relate to my clients is one of the reasons they hire and re-hire me. I'm sorry that I couldn't come through for you in the way that you had hoped, but I am grateful that Angie's List offers this forum in which I can respond to your concerns. I wish you great success with your project. If I can supply you with anything in addition to your architectural plans I'd be more than happy to do so. Sincerely, ~Julie

I just want to start out by saying that, on a personal level, Julie is one of the sweetest people that I've ever met. I think that is one of her best assets when it comes to her skill set as a designer. She has the ability to really hear what you are saying and translate that into thinking for you... knowing what you want before you do. I had selected some paint samples to bring to Julie when we met to discuss wallpaper and paint color. Luckily, she talked me out of my original vision... it would have looked awful and not at all what I was going for. I trusted Julie's style and expertise so much that, without hesitation, we had our selection within minutes. I was so excited with our choices and they were delivered later that week. A few pieces of furniture were going to be delivered in a couple weeks so Julie made sure that the room was painted and wallpapered before the delivery. She referred me to a contractor who was so professional and just a very sweet guy. He went above and beyond just simply painting and hanging wallpaper. When I returned to my apartment after he was finished, I was blown away at how stunning the room looked. He had repaired a few cracks in the walls and resurfaced the window sills. I have been in no rush to purchase the remaining furniture and fixtures that Julie and I envisioned but yet she constantly sends me pictures and ideas as she sees things that fit our vision. She is working 24/7 for all of her clients at all times and I really really appreciate that. For instance, she recently found a dresser set that was just delivered and I am in LOVE! Julie has been extremely patient with me as she really understands that I am waiting for just the right pieces to compliment the room (and at the right price!). I am so so happy with my new bedroom and am looking forward to starting on my living room. It's funny how that happens... always a work in progress!!!! There is a slight chance that I will be moving to San Francisco, in which case, I cannot wait for Julie and I to start all over. I would recommend her (and HAVE) to anyone looking to not only update their space but maximize it, as well.
Description of Work: I hired Julie to give the master bedroom in my Manhattan apartment an update. I live in an older building so a little work was long overdue but I also wanted to give it a more feminine glamorous look. It just took a few minutes into our first meeting for Julie to know exactly what I wanted. From there on out, I trusted her suggestions 100%.

[member name removed], THANK YOU! I am always so amazed at the thoughtfulness of my clients who have written reviews for me on Angie's List. Yours is no different. Thank you for such an excellent review! It was so much fun working with you on your bedroom and especially awesome to receive your excited texts and phone calls as things arrived. Secretly, I hope you do move to San Francisco so we have more to work on! (Just saying ;) In any case, it's been an absolute pleasure. With Gratitude, ~Julie

Our project became more about when will Julie deliver and will it be right. An example: found this wavy tile we all loved. I orderd samples and he had them for weeks. All of a sudden she tells me they can't technically use the tile. More wasted time and frustration. I am left with a design (finally) but no color color palette, fixture ideas, wall colors, most of what I really desperately hired her for. This was my first experience with a decorator and am so hesitant to do so again
Description of Work: Julie is a lovely person who didn't deliver. I believe she was over extended, drawings were returned numerous times incorrectly due to the fact she has a third party, not preset, doing the drawings, and details -- what she was hired for--were always lost in translation. I had to continually request what was promised to be delivered.

[member name removed] - While it saddens me to receive this review, it doesn’t surprise me. Let me begin by saying that I appreciate you leading your review commenting that I am a lovely person. Our time in person together was always fun, enjoyable and accomplished. I enjoyed our visits as well. And the truth is, I believe that having that experience during the design process is almost as important than the finished project. Your Master Bathroom, or whatever part of your home that’s being designed, needs to have wonderful feelings associated with it. After all, home is where the adventure begins. But not everyone is on the same kind of adventure. And I feel more than anything else that our mismatched personalities and some unrealistic expectations hold as much of the blame for your lack of satisfaction with this project as anything else . This is not an excuse on my part or an attempt to lay blame - it’s simply what is. When I get over 100 emails before a design is even finalized on a project - dissatisfaction is in the mix from the outset. As I explained from the beginning, my process is an organic one. A process that I changed, unsuccessfully, to work around your desires and expectations of what it should mean to work with a designer. But in truth, it’s not a process that should change which is why I suggested at the beginning that perhaps we were not a fit as client and designer. I cross t’s and dot i’s better than most, but client’s I work best with have a desire to let go and give into the unfolding. That cannot happen when it is micro-managed. And truth be told, for anyone else reading this, if that’s how you like to work - I’m not the designer for you. Throughout this project there were holdups. First and foremost was me receiving a serious diagnosis of illness during your project which set me back for weeks as you know, and having to rebalance my work and life so it became designed for absolute optimal health. My health and family always come first and are the building blocks of the beauty and design I bring to the people and projects with whom and on which I work. Second, one of my contractors did fall short of expectations. Not in a huge way but anything short of perfect is not good enough. This is my responsibility and for that I sincerely apologize. However, as I explained several times, I always work with third parties. When you hire me - you are hiring the best team for your scope of work: In your case: A designer, contractor, interior architect, renderer. I don’t do it all - i do what I do best and that’s design and bringing exceptional people together for a tremendous outcome. The fact that you didn’t get that experience is exactly why I refunded you more than 25% of your deposit. Not unexpectedly, on an hourly basis, this project cost me more than it made me. But my intention is to always leave clients feeling satisfied. I am truly sorry that this is not the experience you’ve been left with. That said, I am confident that you have enough of the elements in hand that you need to create the unique Master Bathroom sanctuary you are looking for. I wish you the best of luck on your journey and hope that you arrive there sooner than later, and with a feeling of enjoyment and ease throughout the rest of the process. Warmly, ~Julie

We didn't end up using her for anything, we just did the initial meeting with her and the interaction was fine. There was nothing wrong with her but we just decided not to use her. She's an interior designer, we had purchased an apartment and we were going to do some renovations so we wanted somebody to come in and manage the project. I was pretty happy with what we discussed with her, the reason we didn't use her is primarily because we decided the kind of work that everyone had done, I didn't think it would warrant having her because she would probably play a role of a general contractor and we were planning on managing the project anyway so I don't know why we needed another one. She was very responsive.

I didn't know any contractor and I needed someone that had some design ability but also someone that has contractors that they had worked with or currently work with and that they had faith in. We interviewed 3 different interior designers. I didn't want an interior designer who would just decorate, I need someone who does design. She and the woodworker designed the cabinetry and she had all the contractors that she worked with. First of all, I gave her my budget and she said that was way too low. All 3 of the designers said that what I wanted to do, I couldn't do on that budget so I said okay and we came up with another budget. Some of the things I chose, like the chandelier, were a little bit expensive; also the TV and stereo system so that was really not her fault. She also designed where the lighting should be. She really designed the room and had the contractors do the work. I needed someone with more of a design expertise so we chose her and she was very good. It looks spectacular! She put on the before and after pictures on her Facebook page. She was very responsive. She kept in touch by email or she would call. She had an assistant so they would either call or she would call. I was in touch with her at least weekly. We started this project with the demolition on May 6th. She was very punctual and so were her contractors. They were here when they said they were going to be here. She was here when she said she was going to be here and if she was going to be late, she would call and say she was running late and she would be here in 10 minutes.
Description of Work: Julie Ferber Interior Design is my interior designer. This is a large project so we're not yet done with it. She's redesigning my family room. We redid a couple of walls and put in new walls with insulation. We took all the cabinetry that was built-in out because it was faded. She had a cabinet maker come in and design and do custom cabinetry over the fireplace and a desk unit. She did wallpaper and flooring. We did the furniture because we were trying to save a little money on her fee but she looked at it and gave her approval on whatever it was that we picked out.

All of our engagements with Julie have gone excepitonally well. She is the consummate professional and her creativity is endless. Julie's eye for design is extraordinary. She worked in our home on weekends and evenings which worked best for my schedule. She makes herself available via email and phone at all hours.
Description of Work: Julie has done design work in my home a number of times. Julie has helped turn our house into a home by tieing all of the pieces together. She has picked out paint colors, chosen accessories, moved furniture, arranged and hung pictures, laid out tile....the list is endless. She has advised on many areas in our home including our living room, master bathroom and office. Julie walked right into our home and took our piece of coal and turn it into a diamond.

We are so grateful to have the privilege of working with Julie Ferber on our newly constructed home. Julie helped us to create a home that not only matched but exceeded our vision in every way. She took our vision and added her own beautiful, innate and intuitive sense of design and the result was a home that made us happy every time we walk through the front door. We have three small children so in addition to making the space beautiful, organization and functionality were very important to us. Julie helped us create a home that not only looks beautiful but feels wonderful and is designed perfectly for our busy family. It is a pleasure to work with Julie Ferber. She truly listens and is an exceptional designer.

What is a home? It's more than furniture. It's more than paint, artwork and clothes. It's the place that grounds you, keeps you balanced, brings you joy and a provides a place to gather with family and friends. Julie's talent is to understand the people living in the home. Her talent is to match your needs and bring your vision to life. To design and decorate with Julie is to experience an amazing journey. She transformed my home and for that I am truly grateful.
Description of Work: We worked on the master bedroom/bathroom, living and dining room, closets and hallway. We chose paint colors, worked on layout and overall design. We choose window treatments and the work is still continuing. From the lights to the rugs and furniture -- Julie has guided me every step of the way.

Overall working together with Julie was a life changing experience. She really was able to tune in to what I was looking for and created a vision that resulted in a home for me and my two boys that exceeded my expectations. As a single mother, before I had my kitchen redone, I did not sit down at the dinner table with my children. I was truly in a place where there was a feeling of discomfort in my home that I couldn't put into words. Julie came in and listened and changed all of that... Working with me (not just for me), Julie created a house that instantly became a warm, functional, beautiful, incredible home. From her color choices on the walls which surround us, to the fabrics on my chairs, the textures in my backsplash that brought all the beautiful colors together and a total re-design of my cabinetry, my entire space became different. She also changed and picked out new lighting which competely transformed the feeling of everything. Her choices and decisions not only saved me a lot of money, but truly re-created a home that works with my life style and my family. I am grateful.

As a bachelor and single dad who prides himself on being a stellar father my one major failing was my inability to create a home that truly held my little boy. Julie Ferber changed all that. She didn't decorate my house, she taught me what it means to have a home: the place where my son and my minds and bodies are put at ease and our memories are made. She elicited a dream of home and a feeling of family I didn't know I had and then brought that dream into the waking world. It was like watching one of those home transformations on television except every person involved is awesome, the project comes in under budget, and somehow when it's all over - your entire life feels better. I can't recommend Julie highly enough.

Miraculous. Need I say more?
Description of Work: For this particular service, Julie singlehandedly helped us create a beautiful new bathroom renovation. I must state here that this is at least the sixth time I have used her services. She redid our bedrooms, family room, and my home office. Julie also designed my business office at another location. Superb and outstanding are words used all too often. These words are NOT sufficient enough to describe Julie. She is able to work within your budget, create a look that you never dreamed of, and is able to do this all while making it fun in the process. She is accessible consistently and helps eliminate all the stress that accompanies working with so many retailers. Julie is the most professional and talented person with whom I have ever had the pleasure of working. I recommend her most highly.

I contracted with Julie Ferber Studio Interiors to take my new high end apartment in New York City, and transform it into a home. Julie presented ideas that were creative and doable--this is an important distinction, because often a designer will present very creative ideas but they will be entirely unrealistic. Julie listened and reflected back the essence of what I wanted. She was able to make my home feel like "me". I have nothing but praise for her process, her considerable network of skilled artisans and contractors, and her commitment to making it all work, on time and within budget. I have recommended Julie to many friends and would urge you to make an appointment if you're considering any interior design work, cabinetry, decorating, furniture design, or remodeling of existing space. Julie also has experience in commercial work, so if you have an office, doctor's office, school, etc., I would give her a call. I can tell you that working with Julie was an absolute pleasure; she's warm, funny, fun and considerate of how difficult "change" can be!
Description of Work: Overall interior design. Make an office out of a bedroom. Minimize the need for furniture (we already had a lot) by creating opportunity for built-ins. Keep the modern feel of the apartment but warm it up. Furniture design and creation. Window treatments. Carpet and accessory recommendations.
