Blower motor died on Friday night of a holiday weekend. They called back quickly after I left msg with the emergency call answering service. Told me what cost of the call out on a weekend would be upfront on the phone. Turned up as promised. Spend time fixing what they could - had to wait to Tuesday for replacement part (no one else I could find had it available either). They called me to follow up on Tuesday morning before I called them (amazing). Got the part and came out and completed repair that day.
Description of Work: Replaced HVAC blower motor (and responded to a service call on Saturday of a three-day weekend)

Replaced old furnace with new gas furnace and moved A/C unit. Also removed old oil talk. They were so good! Outstanding! Left the work area just as clean as how they found it. I recommended them to my companion and they will be using this service provider as soon as they get all the permits.

Brian Gelber is a very professional, confident and knowledgeable individual. He explained everything to us and answered all our questions. We were very confident that his company would do a great job and they did. His staff was courteous and respectful of our home, kept us informed of every step and checked for our approval. They showed up at the time they said they would and cleaned up at the end of the day. They completed the job in 2 days.

|The project went very smoothly. The workers were very courteous, professional and clean. They laid plastic runners across the floor and stairway and cleaned up after all was finished. |Brian, one of the owners, answered all my questions and gave suggestions. He was going to install another system, but then changed his mind because the original system, he felt had too many call backs and that worried him. |The system has been working flawlessly and my heating bills are WAAAY down from the "stinky" oil system.

The installers were very professional, and on time. They also kept things clean while they were cutting the holes through the walls. Installation took two days. During the planning phase, we were informed that we needed to upgrade our electrical service. The installer helped us get their electricians who do the final hookup to come out a few weeks before the installation and upgrade our panel (although it was an additional expense, but an expense needed regardless). All in all, very satisfied with the quality of work. The units are very quiet and efficient. We are also using them to supplement our oil heating, in the hopes to pay a bit less on oil.

SGand S squeezed me in on a tight schedule, came down to educate us and provide an estimate. I was delighted with Brian and the interest/willingness to help us understand the setup, the advantages/disadvantages of greater efficient systems and certain newer allergy and tech products. We already had two estimates and felt theirs was the most logical due to the immediate trust, comfort and time spent. The pricing was fair. We booked them then and there. They even got the job started sooner than anticipated and now having used the system for a couple of months feel comfortable saying that they did an exceptional job. It is very neat, evenly cooled and their placement of vents appear logical. The negatives: there was some miscommunication at project commencement and relocation of the upstairs already placed air handler was required. They were accomodating, redid at no additional cost to me, but this change required a ceiling patch as there was a large hole created, which due to the ceiling, required an entire sheetrock ceiling - additional outside expense of $1k. Their cleanup was less than desired, in and out. Materials were left in the basement, attic and external that wasn't realized until later. Some dangerous, like screws pieces of trimmed metal, etc. Their electrician was very nice (and did exceptional quality work) but didn't come when initially told and came after the new system was installed and running - so we were blowing fuses for a couple days left and right. Not the end of the world, but annoying. Additionally, when the electrician did the work, unbeknownst to him as they don't check to ensure all lines are working, the master bedroom and hallway line fried/needed to be clipped. This took them two days to rectify with little to no follow up or concern from SGand S. Calls made weren't always returned promptly. Speaking of which, I am still waiting on a price for an ionizer from when the install was performed. I even followed up about a month ago for the cost and breakdown on that. Nothing. All in all, with something like this, you are more concerned about the big picture, IMO, and big picture, i think we chose the right company for the job. People have commented on how comfortable the house is at higher temperatures and even how meticulous they were with work as my basement and attic are unfinished so all can be seen. Cleanup and customer service can be improved.
Description of Work: they installed a 2-zone central air system to an 85 year old brick colonial that had no system. they upgraded the electric via their recommended electrician from 100 to 200 amp service with new panel and two outside switches.

We are re-doing our back patio which required a relocation of our outside central a/c condenser unit to the side of our house just under our dining room window. The a/c was a 10 year old unit and the blower inside the house was 20 years+. So, I knew that a whole new system would be required. Noise was a huge factor in my decision both to insure that we could use our dining room in peace, and that our neighbors would not be disturbed. Our old unit sounded like a jet engine on an airport tarmac. I went for the quietest Carrier model out there. The vendor did not pressure me at all. in fact, the vendor assured me that a cheaper model (by about $800) would likely satisfy my noise concern. I went for the more expensive model in any event for several reasons but I received zero sales pressure to do so. They came when they said. They installed and - and it was a complicated all day installation - and the system is great and very quiet.

After much research and many estimates, my wife and I selected Stan Gelber and Sons to install central a/c in our home. Brian Gelber estimated a central a/c solution with quality, energy efficient parts at a great price. On the day of installation, they arrived on time and were extremely professional and courteous. They covered all of our floors in drop clothes to keep the installation mess to a minimum. It took them approximately two days to complete the install. At the end of the install our house was cool and relatively undisturbed considering the amount of work that needed to be done. I would definitely recommend Stan Gelber and Sons.

Service professionals were great. They instructed us on how to use it, were courteous and informative. We did need service one year later and they came out no problem to fix out unit. It was making a loud noise. Not sure what the problem was but a simple maintenance check-up fixed it. The only drawback is that after one year of service they require you to pay for additional maintenance. Which is normal and expected. Just something to think about when purchasing.

Like many homes near Great South Bay, my foundation crawl was inundated with salt water from Superstorm Sandy, tidal surge from local boat channels. I was lucky to have had no water in the house (except some seepage in utility and mud rooms) but there was 3-4 feet of salt water in the foundation crawl space. Ruined all the ducts and insulation. There was virtually no warm air reaching the master bedroom and bath, the points furthest away form the furnace. The old system was failing rapidly and eating gas at an alarming rate. Brian Gelber visited my home at my request, made inspection and took detailed measurements. He talked me through the various options and asked good, relevant questions. He never tried to and quot;up-selland quot; me on equipment I didn't need and at first specified the bifurcated main heat/ductless systems using an 80% efficiency new heat furnace similar to my existing 18-year old system. I did at my own choice and based on further research verifying Brian's good advice, upgrade from an 80% efficient heating gas system to a 95% efficient system using PVC venting instead of the old galvanized pipe. I upgraded the a/c to a high efficiency unit as well and went with the ductless systems upstairs rather than a separate zone off the main furnace. Ugrading both heating and a/c systems, according to Brian, will quality for significant LIPA and National Grid utility company rebates plus a small $150 rebate from Carrier. I am hoping Gelber follows up with me promptly on that paperwork, which will help me recoup about $1500, nearly cancelling out the cost of upgrading. Everything about this job run on schedule and apart from a Good Friday staffing hiccup, everything happened on time and per Brian's original proposal. Compliment to him and JP's crew. I'm a happy customer and would recommend Stanley Gelber and Sons without reservation.
Description of Work: Gelber & Sons did a complete overhaul & replacement of my heating and a/c systems. New Carrier heating furnace 95% AFUE, exchanger and separate outdoor Carrier a/c. All existing crawl space ducts were demolished and replaced with better grade galvanized ducts, fabricated by Gelber and very well insulated. I live in a architect-designed 1957 ranch with an added upstairs 2 bedrooms and bath. Gelber wisely bifurcated the system. Main floor where I live 95% of the time got the big Carrier systems on one very efficient zone while the upper 2 bedrooms got individually controlled ductless heat-pump generated heat & a/c. Those rooms are used less frequently - only when my adult kids or guests stay overnight. With the old system, I was paying to heat rooms not often in use, sapping heat and a/c from where it was needed. JP and his crew of professionals were tidy, on-time and performed all work to or above specifications. The removal of sodden and corroding ductwork was a big, nasty job done in cold weather, working in a 3-4' crawl space in a ranch with a wide foundation. After removal of old and installation of the new, very well insulated duct work I inspected on hands and knees and was very pleased with the attention to detail and quality workmanship. The crawl space was left in far better condition than when Gelber's crew arrived. The moldy smell is gone and I have good heat, again. Not cheap but professionally done. My new system works beautifully and much more efficiently. Based on previous Angie's List reviews and my neighbor's good experience, I chose Gelber over 2 other worthy competitors whose prices were similar and glad I did. They worked fast to restore my heat but never compromised on quality.

Our high efficiency boiler occasionally would shut off with a computer fault code. We called Gerber for service. We have a Munchkin high efficiency boiler. It's a rare and now discontinued manufacturer so it's VERY hard to find anyone who knows how to service these units. Gerber was able to set up an appointment for us with one of their technicians who is familiar with Munchkins. He was very professional. He determined that the boiler just needed routine cleaning and service (we had skipped one year). He only charged us for a routine maintenance call, which was less than even the basic diagnostic fee. The technician cleaned the boiler very thoroughly. I was impressed.

I am very unsatisfied. They highly recommended the technology and I would never recommend it or them for any other service. They also promised a water filter and to install a thermostat in the living space on the first floor and they didn't follow through with that at all. It was a waste of money and a very unsatisfying experience. They had problems with the installation and they had 3 different crews here all day but they did get it functioning. I would never use them again.
Description of Work: I used Stanley Gelber & Sons for heating and air conditioning. They last installed a whole house steam humidifier on my furnace. It is a pure form of steam humidity that runs independent of the blower so if the house is dry it will turn on even if I don't need heat from the furnace. It blows cold air when it doesn't turn on the heat. It cools off external rooms and it feels like there is a cool breeze going through the house. It is extremely uncomfortable.

Response from Stanley Gelber & Sons Inc
This home switched ownership and apprears that the humidifier was installed for the previous homeowner. We have not been to this home in over two years. The humidifier was added to existing system in 2008. It was manufactured by Honeywell. All humidifiers need annual cleaning which homeowner never did with Gelber & Sons, We hope it has been done all along by someone. Our record indicate that a water filter was never requested and we never had a discussion about thermostat locations. Perhaps she was thinking of the other company that did all the other duct work in their house which we did not do. Obviuos confusion. Steam humidifers need constant air to blend humidity into the house which may feel cool to some people. It is the nature of the Honeywell True Steam humidifiers.

Overall, from start to finish the experience was a good one even though we did have two snafus that we realized only after the installation crew had left (but more about that later.) We had gotten a couple of estimates from other firms and of those, one was ridiculously overpriced and the other two did not sell a brand we wanted to install, so we had to keep looking. It was then that a colleague of mine had referred us to Stanley Gelber and Sons as she had used them and gave us glowing reviews. When Brian came for the estimate in early August, he was a little late but called to say he was running late and would be to the house shortly. I liked that he called, and I had no issue with that. He spent a great deal of time with us, and was very detailed with the estimate. We weren't prepared to have the work done that quickly as we had just hired a contractor to do siding, windows, and a new roof for our house and we had to get through that before the a/c installation could be done. I waited a bit and then realized the quote was only good for 30 days so I contacted Brian who said it was no issue if we wanted to wait a little while longer. I had had a few additional questions, and Brian responded very quickly -- while still not knowing whether we would actually use them for our install. I appreciated that too. Shortly thereafter, I told Brian we wanted them to do the work, and we made arrangements for him to come for the contract signing. From there, a start date was selected -- which was about two weeks after the completion of our siding, windows and roof. Brian said the job might take two days, but it only took one. My husband was home with them for the installation and said they were very professional and neat. Unfortunately, we had a damaged and quot;returnand quot; that my husband did not notice before the crew left, and a couple of days after that we realized a part of our new siding in the rear of our house was damaged/bent. RE: the damaged return, Michael called the next day and had arrangements made to have it repaired right away -- all done without incident. We weren't sure what had happend with the siding so we called our siding guy first and when he came, he said the blowtorch from the installation of the copper tubing attached to the compressor had melted a piece of the siding and he (the siding guy) was not responsible. Ok, so we called Michael - sort of sheepishly not knowing what to expect since this was the second issue. Michael was extremely gracious. He said however rarely it happens, the blowtorch tubing is very hot and occasionally does this type of thing. However unfortunate it was, he said he was sorry and told us to send him the repair bill. I have yet to submit the bill (my fault -- it's been in my work totel for two months but I keep forgetting), but I know with 100% surety, this company will send us a check as they promised they would. In dealing with their office, I have only had positive experiences. No matter who I have spoken with (liz, donna, michelle), I was always treated with kindness and respect. As for the snafus, life's not perfect and the reality is they could have happened with any provider. This company stood by their work and their word, and that's what makes them a cut above most service providers. While we haven't had the need to use our system yet, we have the utmost confidence in this firm's ability to do the work they're paid to do, and we hope to have a long relationship with them. We thank Brian and Michael and their team.
