We have what seems to be a rare, high efficiency hydronic boiler that almost no one I've spoken to has even heard of. About a month ago, it stopped working and it's computer (which had encountered too many errors and went into a fault condition) locked us out. I had two other companies in my house to look at the boiler and neither of them had any clue how to even approach the system, let alone successfully reset it and fix the problem. I could tell from the minute the technician from Stan Gelber and Sons walked in, he knew what he was doing. He was able to open the system up and get it back up and running for us in under an hour. He then spent another hour trying to figure out how to prevent the problem from ever happening again. After two hours, the system was back up and running and they only billed us a $170 service fee. The previous company had billed me $199 for their service call and hadn't been able to fix it. That previous technician even insisted on coming back the next day and trying again (he said he would have to bill me for his time though, even though he accomplished nothing the first time). I was extremely happy with the service I got from Stan Gelber and Sons. They are ordering new parts for my system which we will keep on hand in case we need them in the future. The price they gave me for the parts was also very reasonable. Based on how well they serviced my system and how fair they were with their prices, I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone and everyone.

Just called them to give us an estimate to replace our furnace in the attic which has been badly damaged by a fallen tree. They said that they cant get a salesperson to come of over until after Thanksgiving but would schedule a service call and charge me $175. After I declined the offer, the person on the phone rudely said and quot;Good Luckand quot; and hung up abruptly. I guess this contractor is so busy that getting new customers is not really important, Will try someone else.
Description of Work: I am a new customer who called up for an estimate to install a new gas furnace. No work was performed.

Because of the Hurricane we felt it was only fair that we service our established customers first. The customers that have been loyal to us and appreciate our hard work to service them and always deliver quality at a fair price. Just as an aside I was was present when the customer service rep. in our office was having this conversation with this homeowner and I felt we were courteous and truthful. We did not hang up....the result was the customer did not hear what they wanted. Hurricane Sandy was a disaster and it also hurt many businesses including ours. It is a shame that some people have no compassion or basic understanding. By this homeowner posting a negative review amoungst a disaster just proves my point and further hurts a business that is trying to dig out and help as much as they can. First of all I did alot of research before I gave Stanley Geller and Sons the job. I called and interviewed six or seven companies. I checked Angie's List and others. I made sure they were on the recommeded distributors list for Carrier ( the brand we wanted). I checked better business report. Most of the companies that gave us bids were excellent and I am sure would have done a good job. When Mr. Brian Geller came in he was a no nonsense type of guy. He told us the size of unit we needed he explained why we could not put in the units recommended by others. He explained the job fully told us the units he would put in and how the job would be done from start to finish; His price was great compared to other companies. He told us the job will be started in about two weeks and told us it would take about two and one half days. When Mr. Geller gave us his price we did not haggle because we felt his price was very fair. however, since I do not did not want him to feel that we were easy, I asked him to change all ceiling diffusers, which he agreed to. Two weeks later his men came , three the first day. They removed all the old equipment in a very organized and clean way. When they left everything was neat and clean. The next day five men came; they installed the new equipment and tested it. Mr. Geller sent two additional men so that they could finish the job the second day. They were very professional workers, there was little talking and very organized work. I will certainly recommend this great company to anyone.

I was able to get a quick appointment. The tech was courteous, professional and seems to know what he was doing. When he handed me the statement of work it came out to $510. I knew about the $170 diagnostic fee but the 5lbs of Freon at $60 a pound was a shocker. $300 of Freon is pretty high for me. I spoke to the a manager, and got a quote for a new CAC system. The manager was able to give me credit for the freon and after comparing quotes i decided to get the new CAC from Stanley Gelber and Sons Inc.. Update- After Super Storm Sandy i needed a new boiler. Stanley Gelber and Sons Inc. was able to get me a boiler pretty quick and installed it for me. These guys were great and i would recommend them,
Description of Work: My Central air system has a slow leak and i have to add freon pretty much every summer. I wanted to try a new A/C company so based on reviews I found Stanley Gelber & Sons Inc.

Our central air system leaked into our hallway below the blower that is in our attic. I called Gelber and Sons on Friday afternoon and they made an appointment with me for Monday. The air conditioner was working, so this was not an emergency.The technician (Paco) arrived on schedule and found a clogged U-trap and cleaned it out. He replaced the air filter with one I provided and checked and adjusted the condenser pressures. Paco explained everything he did. He was prompt and professional and provided a fully itemized bill that designated everything he checked. When I set up the appointment I was told that there was $170 charge for the first appointment and diagnosing the problem, so the price was definitely fair.
Description of Work: The technician (Paco) found a clogged U-trap and cleaned it out. He replaced the air filter with one I provided and checked and adjusted the condenser pressures.

Since I was unable to get even a date for an estimate, clearly NO work was performed.
Description of Work: I phoned Gelber & Sons on July 18 to set up an appt. for converting from oil to gas. I spoke with Brian's wife, who is in charge of setting up the appts., and had a very pleasant conversation with her. At first Mrs. Gelber tried to set me up with an appt. with Brian about two weeks away. I explained to her that I needed an appt. ASAP as I wanted to take advantage of a rebate being offered by Nat'l Grid that ended July 31. Understanding the urgency, Mrs. Gelber was able to set me up with an appt. with Brian on July 23, for which I was extremely grateful. Unfortunately, only hours later, Mrs. Gelber phoned back to tell me that Brian couldn't keep that appt. and that the company was too busy doing appts. for A/C at this time and that was going to be their company's main focus and suggested that I phone Universe, a competitor, to get an estimate . I found both her call to cancel my appt. and her comment strange since Gelber & Sons clearly advertises that they are in business to do both Heating and Cooling Installations and certainly this is the time of year that someone should start planning ahead for the winter season. I also didn't understand why I wasn't told that A/C installlations were Gelber & Sons present focus from the start??? Mrs. Gelber then told me she wouldn't be able to get me an appt. for what I needed for at least 3 weeks. I am writing this review to save perspective Gelber & Sons customers time and energy trying to make an appt. at this time for oil to gas conversions. I did phone Universe, as Mrs. Gelber suggested, and I am happy to say that I was able to get an appt. with one of their salesmen the very next day. Just to let you know, Universe does a significant amount of work with A/C installations as well as oil to gas conversions. Peter, one of Universe's salesmen, was prompt, professional and very knowledgeable. I am anxiously awaiting his estimate, which I was told I will get tomorrow.

We were trying to be honest and not hold up the customer from getting the estimate and securing the rebate. Yes, we were extremely busy with A/C and in the middle of a heat wave. We were trying to do the right thing and not delay them. We even recommended a competitor so she could get the rebate. Its a shame that she took it as a bad thing and did not appreciate us steering her in the right direction. We tried to be very professional and honest.

Salesman "Marc" came out to survey house and explained to me what needed to be done. Gave price, which was almost exactly what I expected. Permits had to be obtained from the town, which Gelber did, and the work was scheduled. Workman came and completed the installation in about seven hours total. They were clean, had drop clothes down where they needed to walk through the house. At the end, the installation guys showed me each unit, and turned each on to show me they were working. Weather hasn't been warm enough for me to determine how well the house will be cooled, but I anticipate no problems.
Description of Work: Had "split" system Mitsubushi A/C, heater combo installed in whole house. Included five indoor units and two outdoor units.

The entire staff was very responsive to my needs, answering questions about my estimate, the installation, setting the date, the permit process, etc. I was very happy with the end result. The only thing I can complain about is the permit turnaround time which was no fault of the company's but my town. I ended up calling the town myself to follow-up on it and had the permit within a week. Just a note to homeowners if you are having delays due to the permit application you should call the town directly. They are sometimes more responsive to owners calling. vs. the company. The installers were also very courteous and efficient. They let me have input on the final location of the unit, the drain pipe, and outdoor unit.

A few years ago Stanley Gelber installed a central A/C unit in my home. They've performed the Spring start up service every year since then it has always been a pleasant experience. Recently the plastic base the outdoor unit was sitting on broke and they've replaced the base and re-installed the plastic base with some bricks to sit on for support, at no additional cost even though they've done the initial installation more than 5 years ago. They were prompt in scheduling the appointment to do the repair and showed up as promised.

I found them on Angie's List. They were also very excellent. I was happy with them. They were good, but the only think I would have liked about them was one of the owners to be out here on the first day. I don't need to call them again because they did a nice job.

NO work was performed. This homeowner wanted us to cut corners on the install so as to get a lower price. We ONLY recommended everything be to code. As an example a chimney liner was needed and we would not install without it. This does bring up cost but safety comes first. We are always understanding to homewoner's budget but will not comprmise qulaity.

We were very pleased with the job they did. The workers were all competent, they knew what they were doing. They were on time and completed the work by the end of the day. They cleaned up after the work was done and left no mess. The heating system works excellently. Our old heating system was installed by another contractor 20 years ago. We were not getting as much heat in the lower half of the house. But Gelber and Sons removed a broken damper and now we can finally use the downstairs of our home again, which used to be very cold in winter.
Description of Work: Gelber and Sons replaced an old gas furnace and 3 ton air-conditioner coil. We were very pleased with the job they did. The workers knew what they were doing. They were on time and completed the work by the end of the day. They cleaned up and left no mess. The system works excellently.

REVISED 12/21/11: We recieved a call from the owner asking to come out and address ALL our concerns. He was puzzled that we did not call him first (which I should have) before writing my 1st review. He will show us in depth why the extra money we spent for the top of the line unit (rather than a middle of the road one) was in FACT worth the investment. Like I said, I DO trust him/his company and believe EVERY issue we may have had will now be addressed. I never meant to imply his company was inferior than another...I was only trying to convey that I could have made do with the middle of the road unit the we priced through another company. In any event I believe this button down/follow up will correct our concerns. New Grade A ----------------------------ORIGINAL POST------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's just say their promises were far better than their delivery. I won't get into a laundry list of and quot;complaintsand quot; because I do think the men were nice and not maliciously dishonest (just typical salesmen). That is after the sale all the promised attention to detail never materialized. When you spend $7k on the best Carrier Unit on the market you don't expect to hear from the salesmen's brother and quot;Oh that's just the way it is with capes...it will always be cold upstairsand quot;. This after the salesman made it clear that the unit we purchased would and quot;blow the curtains off the walland quot;. Also after the install part of the unit hangs well below the promised height line... ...this after stressing the importance that the new unit be set as high as the old unit in our crawlspace because of water issues! I don't expect our and quot;10 year warrantyand quot; will be honored based on the weaselly answers to my concerns after the install. I really could have saved $3k and went with an 80% unit from XXXXX and received the same results. In fact with Christmas around the corner..I wish I did.

Although there were some glitches... not noticing the distance to electric source, and crossed wires for the a/c unit resulting in coming on to cool house even when on heat mode. They also took a look at my existing heating unit for the upstairs and made sure it did not have any flaws or problem spots. 07/29/12 So, I now have had them back to repair leak from the a/c air-exchanger unit in the basement. Repairman was polite and fixed what he said was an incorrect degree-of-lean for the d/c pipe. But, I still have not received a return call for proper placement of the tubing, which needs to go outside (so far isn't). In the meantime I still have water covering the basement floor. Luckily I don't have much other than the unit on the floor. Really hoping they will get it right.
Description of Work: I requested estimate for furnace and a/c replacement for main floor. I have two separate units. Brian Gelber came and was pleasant and professional. He reviewed my current equipment, my needs and wants and we negotiated work and price. Of course I would be happier with paying less, but necessary replacement of old unit, and wanting a good unit for future sale of this home... it was reasonable. The workman came later than I expected, but did the work within the time expected. They were professional and polite. There was a delay in powering the attached humidifier due to the distance to the power source. This resulted in having an electrician return two weeks later to complete the installation of this part of the unit. The furnace worked well without this additional item. When the f/u team came to make sure everything was working appropriately after the electrician completed his portion of the work, there was a problem. When the temp was set low on the heat the a/c came on. NOT a good thing. The f/u team worked out the problem and rewired the connection rather than using the old existing wiring coming into the unit from the a/c unit outside. They were methodical and I am grateful that this was the f/u team. They sorted out the problem and rechecked everything multiple times to make certain it was good to go.

Went very well, we are very happy. We purchased a brand new Slant/Fin 140,000 BTU GAS boiler with installation.
Description of Work: During Hurricane Irene we had 3 feet of water in our basement. We needed new water heater, washer, dryer and boiler. We had Stan Gelber and Sons ( Brian ) come out to give us a quote for the boiler. The other items had already been replaced. Brian was right on time, and very nice. Besides just needing a new boiler, we also needed to change the zone for one radiator. For some reason the house when we purchased it had the thermostat for the downstairs in the living room, which only controlled the living room. The thermostat for the second floor was in the dining room. The dining room radiator was also connected to the second floor thermostat. Needless to day, stupid design. I had discussed my concerns about this issue, and wanted to move the dining room radiator to the first floor zone. Brian agreed it was a dumb design and should be fixed for better heating. We had compared his quote to others, as well as looked at his reviews here on Angies List. After a week or so, we finally made the decision to go with Brian, and made the call to give him the go ahead. Brian wanted to come back out to the house once again to make sure that everything we discussed was understood by both parties. I accepted that and meta few days later. Again, Brian showed up on time. We headed down to the basement to go over the changes, and at that time i remembered i also wanted the gas valve on the hot water heater changed. The other company that replaced it never changed the gas valve, and i wasn't comfortable with that. Brian tooka quick look at it and said he smells gas. He asked me to get some soapy water which i did, and he checked for a gas leak. Sure enough it was bubbling. He asked me for some tools, which i provided, and he began working right there to try and fix the problem, which he did. Once that was done, it was also agreed it would be changed when they came back to install the boiler. With 4 kids in the house, it was nice of him to fix the small leak right there on the spot. I knew at that point we had picked the right company. We scheduled the job to start in 2 weeks, and was told it would take 2 days to complete. As expected 2 men showed up in a work truck ready to get started. They removed the old boiler, did their work for the day and cleaned up after themselves. Very nice and professional. The next day they came back to finish and we were happy. Small issue bleeding out one of the radiators upstairs ( not their fault ) the house is old. So they made a minor plumbing change ( installed a valve )in the basement to help them get the air out. They tested everything thoroughly a few times and just like that we had heat again. And just in time. The cold weather is starting. I would highly recommend them to anyone and everyone.

The install of all of the equipment went very well. The install team was great...very nice and meticulous. Had a couple of minor glitches that were resolved promptly. I have used the heating and A/C systems now for a complete season and they systems have work extremely well and saved me a lot of money in energy costs.

Brian Gelber visited my home for the quote and finalizing the contract. During his visit for the quote, I was impressed by his knowledge but not impressed by his professionalism. He had a harsh sales approach and did not listen well to my needs. I was slightly insulted by the assumptions he made about knowing what I wanted better than I did. However, ultimately I decided to use him, because he really did communicate the best in terms of his knowledge about the systems and what would work for my home. All of the work was performed in one day. A large crew came and they got to work. I was impressed with how quickly they worked for the installation. They arrived promptly with all the necessary equipment. All of the installed parts and equipment were in brand new condition and installed neatly. It looked great. Just like you would see in a brochure. There were some things that I would like to have been more neat about the installation. If there was any way to do it, I would have like to have seen the interior of the house protected better from the insulation dust falling from the ceiling. There was a layer over everything when the job was done. Also, pencil marks were left on the ceiling in one of my rooms from where the vents were installed. There was one installation problem. There were two drains installed from the equipment. They were installed backwards, and a return visit was needed to have them correct the problem. Overall, if I had the job to do over again, I would still choose to use them. They will be providing service for my equipment for 10 years, and I am likely to have them come in to service my heating equipment too.
Description of Work: Installed a Central Air Conditioning System in my 1000 sqft ranch with basement. The equipment installed is a 2 ton, 16 S.E.E.R. Carrier brand system. All of the vents were installed from the attic through the ceiling. They filed for an obtained the appropriate permits with the Town of Oyster Bay. They filed for and obtained an energy rebate from LIPA.

the homeowner had a difficult time understanding the concept of how the correct way to install central air during the initial sales appointment. His house has warm air heating that originates from the basement and the duct system that was installed during the 1950's could not effectively handle the A/C. We installed an "overhead" duct system with an air handler in the attic to insure they would have awesome cooling this past summer (which they did). All other minor issues were addressed and corrected..... Brian Gelber

They were wonderful. They are a great company to deal with. They spoke to me several times about their plans and what they were going to do. They explain what they were going to do things in a certain way. They were very responsive to any questions that I had. I felt like they will do a good job. They were neat and clean. They came when they said they would come. They helped me whatever I wanted any help. I am very satisfied with them. Their price was comparable with the other two estimates I got. They will be coming soon again to make some adjustments.

This was absolutely a refreshing and professional job from day one. The office staff was efficient in scheduling and confirming our appointment for an estimate. Brian Gelber, was on time and gave us a down to earth estimate with possible rebates from LIPA. We decided to sign and set up an installation date about one week later. The crew of 5 showed up at 9am and completed the job by 1pm. They did a very professional job and the unit has been working fine since. I would rate this company as being outstanding.
Description of Work: The condenser and air handler was replaced along with a new return duct and piping. A new programable thermostat was also installed

The work was performed professionally, efficiently, and exceeded our expectations. They follow up with a call after the work is completed, and they also schedule a follow-up visit about a month after the work is completed to make sure that the system is performing as it should. I would definitely recommend this company should you need to put in a central air conditioner system or replace your existing central a/c system.

My old unit burned out in the middle of January (snow snow and more snow). I called 3 contractors on Angies list in my area. The first contractor came to see the job and promised an estimate, but never heard from them again. The second gave an estimate via e-mail 2 days later,but said it would be at least 2 weeks before the job could be done. Stanley Gelber and Sons came out right away, gave me an estimate on the spot, and immediately began to prepare for the job. There was a one day delay due to yet another snow storm, but within 5 days, the crew was at my condo unit ready to install. They were courteous, neat and efficient. They even had to climb down a retaining wall to get to the pad where the unit was to be installed, and they literally had to shovel loads of snow to make a space for the installation. There was a little confusion regarding the LIPA rebate between myself and their office, but that was resolved to my satisfaction. We had some neighbors inquire about the service and we did not hesitate to recommend.
