I have relied on Northtowns Remodeling for my last several home repairs and improvement projects. Brian and his crew are honest, dependable people who do top quality work. For each project we've done, Brian responded immediately and had a quote ready quickly. This company does not try to sell you things you don't need, which is extremely refreshing. Brian will lay out all of your options for you, and help you find the best balance of cost vs. necessity. In fact, the quotes Brian gave me for each of these projects were all at least a little lower than other companies I called. Additionally, Brian kept in contact with me before, during and after the jobs were complete just to be sure I fully understood the process, and that I was happy with the results. This is practically unheard of these days! All of the repairs they made are beautiful looking, very solidly installed with high quality materials, and were done quickly. We couldn't be happier with the entire process. We will definitely be using Northtowns Remodeling for all of our future projects.
Description of Work: We had a garage exterior entry door/frame replaced and also needed repairs on our front porch portico that had a roof leak and some wood rot. Last year, we also used Northtowns Remodeling to replace the front porch columns.

Very professional. This was a project for my aging parents and Owner came to their house to evaluate- gave them a range of options with suggestions... Not at all pushy ! We took 2 days to make decision-owner came back...reviewed plans -and set up work within the next couple days! Job was completed within 1 week of my first contact with this company. Workers were very pleasant- hard working. The finished project is beautiful-- my parents extremely pleased . I would highly recommend and fully intend to use them again.

Description of Work: We had the worst luck with another contractor and bathtub product - the tub basically cracked after only a few months. The contractor did not stand behind his work and the tub manufacturer was not helpful either. After meeting with a handful of contractors, Northtowns Remodeling did exactly what we needed. They work quick, efficient, and the new tub is a great product. We will defninitely call them for our next project.

During my initial call to Northtowns Remodeling I told them what services were needed and that I hoped that the job could be done as soon as possible because I was expecting guests in the coming two weeks. They were very helpful and completed the job ahead of my deadline. The sales rep was on time for the appointment and was very clear about the price and took many pictures to take back to the office. A final detailed estimate and contract was sent within several days. During his visit the rep explained the nature of my bathroom situation and the fact that special attention was needed for various architectural details not found in standard bathrooms and this was the reason for the price he quoted. I felt it was fair. Matt, the craftsman who did the job was excellent. He was extremely neat, polite, professional, artistic and took care to do an exceptional job. I would highly recommend him! Half way through the job, the owner Brian Marek came to the house to meet me and check on the progress of the work. He asked to take pictures of the final project. In conclusion I can say that I am very satisfied with the work and recommend this company. This review was written by the owner of the home Christina Koerner Higgins.

We choose not to do business with Northtowns for this project due to their estimate being seemingly grossly out of whack with their competition.
Description of Work: We contacted Northtowns as one of three estimates on a second floor bath remodel. He was professional, punctual, and responsive. Estimate was for very small bath with a complete tear out, including expanding a stand up shower into a closet area, new floor, toliet, fan, etc. Estimate also included hallway repair from October Storm water damage and mandatory hard wiring of smoke and CO2 detectors. Estimate promptly returned in 3 days at $20K. Although I am sure the work quality woud be acceptable, the estimate is more than double what the two other estimates came back at for compriable work.

Thank you for your comment member regarding your full bathroom remodel, expansion and hallway repair. I would have liked to have had the chance to meet you, perhaps if you were there I could have explained the scope of work that was involved. This was a very legitimate estimate I provided. I have been called in to fix many jobs of “contractors” who have provided estimates at ½ the cost of my true competitors. I would hope for your sake that the company you select is licensed, insured and secures all the required permits and inspections for the project. They should also be able to provide real references for you to contact. Thank you and good luck with your project.

Problems with shoddy installation started from day 1. The workers told me only one of them was qualified to do this type of installation and that Brian hired anyone who was available. The men working were not happy with him, I should have seen this as a red flag.Issues immediately were cracked/shrunken caulk, the guys that ran the bead of caulk had filthy fingers so all the beads were gray and full of dirt. One double hung window was adjusted 3 times and still did not operate properly. Brian never offered to contact the window manufacturer for a new frame, I had to do this myself only to have the manufacturer tell me that Brian had to make the request. All the replacement windows were drafty. The aluminum trim around the windows was sloppy, bent, dented and scratched. When I insisted that Brian send back someone qualified to make these fixes, we kept getting put off because he didn't want to pull his guys off other jobs. One final attempt at satisfaction, I called on my mother's behalf in 2011 to tell Brian she was sick and tired of the drafty windows and tired of having to use a prop to keep them open in the summer. He booked an appt, showed up at the house, had a lapse of memory and pretended not to know who I was (we had spoken on the phone a week prior), took 3 minutes to inspect the windows and said he would be happy to send someone out at my cost to "service" the windows. Instead, I hired an independent contractor to open up all the framing to discover that none of the windows were properly insulated! He told me it was one of the poorest installations he has come across. He contacted the manufacturer to have the window that was faulty, replaced. It works now, imagine? Fully disgusted with Northtowns, they should not be in business. I have spoken with other customers of Brian since then and have had no positive feedback. Even the window distributor will not work with him any longer.

In August of 2002 we did install windows for this person’s mother. This installation was done by a seasoned carpenter and a helper. Shortly thereafter we were contacted that a piece of window trim was dirty and damaged on the outside of a window casing. I personally inspected the window casing, determined that there was no way to know how the damage was done, however; I did dispatch a qualified service person to repair it. The repair was completed promptly and at no charge. At that time if there were any other concerns they would have been addressed. As far as I was concerned the job was installed to our industry standard or better and was complete. I recently, almost a decade later, get a call from this person again who was seemed very agitated, after speaking with one of my competitors. She said her mother’s window sash kept falling down so I made arrangements to inspect the window personally. I visited her mother’s home and found a broken sash lift balance. I offered to get the part for her and install it at cost. I had not received any further correspondence from her since that meeting until today on this website. I felt after the amount of time that had elapsed, this was a fair offer on my part. Apparently she chose to have a competitor do the repair, which is her prerogative. I would like to clarify that I am very careful about the qualifications of the people I hire, regardless of what a disgruntled helper or competitor may have said. I believe that the vast majority of our customers are very satisfied with me, my employees and the work that we do. I have thousands of customer testimonials and references that speak to the same.

my problem with this company is that the owner came to my house to give me an estimate for VA job he said there would be no problem to do the job 10 days later he could not do the job. Why couldn't he tell me that in the first place I lost 10 days waiting for his estimate with no results.

Thank you for your concern member. I just read your statement and would ask you to please consider the following. You called us on 08/25/11 @ 8:10 am and scheduled an appointment for 08/30/11. I came out to your house on 08/30/11, went back to my office and carefully considered the scope of the project. At that time I determined that it was not the type of project I wanted to bid on. I sent you a letter informing you of same on 09/01/11. I am sorry we did not offer you the estimate, but believe letting you know the very next day reasonable. Please feel free to contact us in the future for other estimates on things we do offer. Brian Marek President

Professional Yes, Brian was. The estimate was rediculous for the work needed and i would like to mention, the estimate included many other things that were not even needed or asked for by me. IE painting, baseboard, etc.
Description of Work: Ok, I have never really written a review on almost anything, however, this one is worth it just for the laugh that me and my friends got after discussing the "estimate" that I received. I am not dumb in my knowledge of what needed to be done, I simply did not have the time to do this project. I will be detailed as possible to help paint a picture for anyone reading. I have a very small master bathroom in my house. Its floor is about 40sq ft ( 5" X 8" ). It had a vinyl floor, small tile stand up shower, soaking tub with tile surround, toilet and vanity. I removed the vanity, the toilet, the vinyl floor, the tile around the tub surround and the entire stand up shower to the studs. What I needed Northtowns to do for me was the following.Lay hardibacker on the floor and tile, Tile one accent wall, lay hardibacker around the tub surround and tile, lay hardibacker in the stand up shower and tile, then install a glass shower door. My original vanity had plumbing for hot/cold and drain coming up from the floor, I needed this moved to the wall to accommodate for my new vanity which had rear access for the plumbing. That about covered it. I was going to install the shower faucet, new vanity, toilet, and mirror on my own. I just needed a tiled room basically. Now know, I was supplying the Shower pan, and all the tile needed for the entire job out of my pocket. Northtowns basically needed to provide about 10-12 sheets of HardiBoard ( $160-$200 ), Thin set mortar ( $100 ), and other minors ( Tape, PVC, some baseboard, couple 2 X 4's and screws ( At best $400 ). Glass shower door I'm not familiar with but I will go as high as saying $1000. So that is about $1800 ( stretching it ) that they would be supplying. Now what needed to be done was tiling, I understand that is time consuming and a skill, hanging sheet rock, mudding taping, I understand. I would guess a 2 person job, 3-4 days.So what do I get, for a job with about $1800 in materials? A $9585.00 Estimate, But wait.. there's a coupon that brings it down to $8985.00 if I get it done in 30 days! $7000 for Labor??? Really??? As a previous reviewer stated, I'm sure they do wonderful work, but their estimates are so "out of the box" for the job, its not worth the consult. I do have to state one other issue that annoyed me as a potential customer, Brian, the owner did the visit, on time and was very friendly, however once I showed him the bathroom and he saw the shower pan there, and tile that I stated "I would provide" it immediately seemed like he couldn't leave fast enough. I honestly think this estimate was simply because they did not want to do a small job, with provided materials. It is obvious that they want you to buy everything in material from them, so they can obviously profit from that as well. Which is fine, as long as you don't mind working with a buyer who doesn't need to purchase materials from you as the contractor every now and then. The other thing that is annoying as well, the estimate was very detailed i must say, however it included Tons of things i didnt need, nor ask for. Such as Painting the ceiling, walls etc. Installing Toilet, vanity, mirror, sinks, ...all of which i specifically stated i was going to do. Installing baseboard ( dont need it, didnt want it ) and others. Considering I was providing the Shower Pan, All tile, the vanity, mirror, sinks, faucets and toilet and didnt need them to actually install any of the forementioned, I can only imagine what their estimate for my 5" X 7" bathroom would have been if I did not have those items and had to purchase from them. What....$18,000??? Unless you Uber rich, and simply have $ to burn, I wouldn't recommend. Sorry Brian.

The original email request came from a man residing at the same address, I cannot account for the reason why the last name changed here for the Angie's list comment. For purposes of this communication I will consider the member and the other name one in the same. This is a copy of his email request to me: “2004 Built Home, reno Small approx. 5 X 7 master bathroom ( actual floor space ). Stand up shower has been demo down to studs, need shower rebuilt ( studding is there )Need Backerboard, kerdi membrane, shower pan installed and tiled. ( possible shower door installation ) Floor, accent wall and soaking tub surround needs to be tiled as well. Using 12 X 12 porcelain tile mostly, some small accent tile added as well. Tile has been chosen (Home depot ). Small plumbing needed ( currently have hot/cold and drain coming from floor, will need to be moved over to the wall to accommodate new vanity type with rear access) This is not a huge renovation and i wouldn't expect a huge estimate. Unfortunately i did attempt a shower install, and was over my abilities for my own liking. Will remove upon actual in home estimate or visit. ( explain later ) Budget ( $2-$3K include materials)thank you. Please contact immediately as other contractors have been contacted as well.” This is what happen: I went to a home at that address on August 18th. The estimate was to complete a partially started Master bathroom with a whirlpool tub and separate stand up shower. I personally estimated and mailed out a comprehensive free estimate the next day on August 19, 2011. I was told that he started the project and abandoned it over a year ago. He expressed that he would be moving and needed to get it finished in order to sell. My inspection of this project with over 25 plus years of experience revealed that there were many problems with the work that was done by him or others. Basically the bathroom was gutted, usable and needed some professional help. I truly felt bad for the guy, because I believed he was in over his head. I gave him an estimate to complete the job the proper way. That may be why the job was more than he expected. It is much harder to take apart someone’s work, correct it and put it back together. He would have expected me to stand behind my work and as a professional, to do that the work would need to be done in a professional manner. I don’t understand why he and his friends had a good laugh at my expense. I made the appointment, I drove 45 minutes to his house and 45 minutes home in the evening. I spent four hours working up a proper estimate and getting to him the very next day. Good luck with your bathroom project and the sale of your house. I sincerely wish you well. Overall, he was professional, but left me very annoyed by wasting my time by being late and me a ridiculous estimate.
Description of Work: Called for an estimate on a bathroom remodel. Salesman was an hour late and tried telling us we needed to do more things than we asked for. The things he said we needed to do he claimed were to be "up to code". When I researched the code it actually was code for the rest of the house but did not pertain to bathrooms. His estimate was double what 2 other companies came in at for the same work. I'm sure Northtowns work is great, but I'll never pay double for the same work.

I called the member on 08/14/11 to inquire about his concerns and this is what I found. The member said that in the initial meeting on 07/07/11 that I mentioned that he would need to install interconnected smoke detectors in his home. This is required with all interior permits by New York State Code and enforced by the local building department. Though you would not install a smoke detector in the bathroom, having your bathroom remodeled does trigger the requirement that the smoke detectors in the rest of your house are in compliance. He informed me that they were already done, therefore, in my estimate mailed on the next day, 07/08/11, I specifically excluded the smoke detectors and listed in writing they were “completed by owner or others”. It is my responsibility to discuss the code with all clients, and if this work is done or to be done by someone else, I include this in the estimate under the heading “Not including the following:” as I did in the member's estimate. As far as being late, I do not recall being late, however it is possible and I apologized to him on the phone. I generally try to give myself a half hour window when setting appointments to accommodate the times when I am with another client longer than planned. My real concern for the member is that hopefully he chooses a contractor that is properly licensed, insured, uses quality products, and has the project inspected as required. Often we find when there is a significant discrepancy in an estimate that one or more of these components are missing. In these tough economic times, anyone with a hammer and pickup truck can become contractor. A low ball estimate may cost significantly more in the long run.

Overall, we were very pleased. There were a few "glitches" along the way but they were resolved. The carpenter in charge of the project was a true craftsman and the installation was very professional. Great attention to detail. We worked out the tile design for the wall above the countertops and behind the stove with the owner, Brian Marek, and were very pleased with the results. Brian was there first thing almost every day to let us kknow what his crew would be doing and to get our feedback. An unreserved recommendation.
