Week before job was to be performed Paul let me know he could probably start on the following Wednesday. I agreed but told him to call me the day before to be sure of the day and that I would meet him before work began. Not hearing from him I called on Wed and he let me know they were almost done!! I ran down to meet him and all of the firewood they had either given or sold to the gas station 2 miles away. I questioned this and Paul got agitated with me when I asked why he did not leave it as we agreed and he said it was at the end of my driveway and I could get it if I wanted it. This made no sense as I have no driveway – I am on the public park road where we discussed this. What he meant was the wood was down the 1+ mile park road, then down Rt 3 and on the property of a local business. The only explanation for this is that he must have sold the gas station the wood. There was damage to my garage roof mainly on the edge and he agreed to pay for that along with some damage to my wood stairway. He was very dismissive about the damage to my stairway but he agreed to come back to repair the roof so I held $200 from the total. He said he would come back after a couple weeks and repair it. When I wrote the check for $2,700 I mistakenly wrote out Twenty Seven and No/100. In the long-hand area. Neither of us noticed and he left with the check - he was down in Syracuse at my bank within an hour, he called telling me that I made the amount wrong and began accusing me of deliberately trying to cheat him. I assured him that it was an honest mistake. He also demanded that I come to Syracuse immediately with the correct check. I let him know I couldn’t because I was working but maybe I could later of he could come back and I would give him another check. He insulted me some more and hung up. A little later I got a call from a guy that I figured out was his helper. This guy started telling me how bad he needed the money to buy his daughter an Easter present. I let him know I really needed to keep this between me and his boss. I received another call from Paul who was able to give me a bank routing number and I agreed to eat the cost of the bank wire transfer and wire the correct amount to his bank. I asked that he photo a picture of the incorrect check torn up. Since I never received that picture I spent another $30 on a stop payment. I have waited over a year for him to repair my garage but I have not heard from him and at this point I would not let him on my property anyway. In Summary: Good tree work - great climber - saved me a lot of $$ because the other tree service wanted to bring in a crane. Did not notify before he began work on this property. Broke his contract in the part he would cut and stack manageable pieces for firewood. I got no firewood. Unprofessional - when there was a problem with the payment he accused me of swindling him intentionally, raised his voice and swore at me. I did not lose my temper.
Description of Work: Paul was hired to take down a very large oak tree over my garage at my cottage 5 miles from where I live – The tree is actually above the roof peak of the garage it so a bucket truck would not have reached. He had to climb it. He was finally hired to take it down along with 2 other trees. Paul also agreed to cut up some firewood and leave it along the garage so I could remove it to my main house later. Paul provided an estimate on the spot for $3,100 which we later negotiated to $2,900. Estimate states: Take down large oak and cherry to the right of it Plus another smaller oak and some trimming. - Leave all firewood - Take Brush and large wood “log” $3,100

They were very prompt. We got a couple of quotes and they were about the same. The experience was excellent. They told us to mark the tree and they came out. They left the quote in the mailbox about 10 days later. It was great.
