+ -1 moreMy wife and I asked the electrician to install the second floor alarm on the wall so that it would be effective yet unobtrusive. The electrician installed the alarm (one strobe, and one controller) in the middle of the ceiling. Three or four thick Romex wires extend out from the alarm. It is very unattractive and spoils the ambience of the second floor. In all fairness to the electrician, there may have been some confusion about the location for the second floor alarm. I wanted the alarm on the wall so as to be less obtrusive, while my wife was concerned about making sure the alarm was visible to everyone sleeping on the second floor. The electrician chose to center the alarm in the center of the ceiling, and it is aesthetically unacceptable. When we asked the company to relocate the alarm to a spot less obtrusive, it demanded more money. Having already spent $750, I was reluctant to do so. Notwithstanding the fact the company said it would come back to fix the problem, and notwithstanding the fact we promptly sent a check for $750, we have not heard from the company. Because we haven't heard back from the company, we are working with someone else to fix the problem. Based on the above, we will not work with JF Knaul again.
Description of Work: JF Knaul Electric rewired the electric water pump at our lakeside cabin in Skaneateles and installed two fire alarms, one on the first floor and the other on the second floor.

+ -1 moreFirst, Jeff returned my call and apologized for not calling back more timely - he had been out of town. We discussed what I needed and he said he would call when he had time in his schedule. He called about 2 weeks later and came that day. He was late leaving his prior site and called to tell me he would be later than scheduled. I showed him what I wanted. Due to the construction of the hous what I wanted was not possible but he made suggestions for alternatives that worked just as well. He did the work quickly, cleaned up after himself. $65.00 for the work done, no additional service charge. He was personable and I'd certanly use him and recommend him to friends.
Description of Work: I needed a lighted make up mirror hard wired and mounted.

He showed up on time and kept on task and stayed true to the estimate. His professionalism and honest stood out the most. He took care of everything and cleaned it all up. He was very responsible.

+ 0 moreCalled John earlier in week. He answered the phone but said he was in the middle of a job and could he call me back that evening. I agreed and he called as he promised. Appointment set for Friday morning. He called before the appointment time to tell me he was running 10-15 minutes late (which I thanked him for calling to let me know) and then arrived 15 minutes after the originally scheduled time. So far so good. He promptly encountered the very same problems I had come up against when I had tried to install the track the weekend before. He and his helper involved me in discussing the options to resolve the issues and the end result was a clean, professional and wonderful installation that brought to life what I had envisioned for my dining area. He took time to make sure everything was done as close to perfection as humanly possible and cleaned up thoroughly after the work was completed. What would ordinarily have taken him an hour or so (if there were not tricky issues involved) turned out to be closer to three hours. He apologized for all the complications (none of which were his fault in the least) and he charged me for two hours which was more than reasonable. I was right to realize my limitations and use an electrician to finish this work and I am very glad I chose John. I would definitely use him again in the future.

Description of Work: i have a 4 family house. the heat in the dryer wasn't working, the hall lights which are on a timer were not working. I called Knaul and he called me back within minutes. He was very professional, cordial and knowledgeable. He scheduled an appointment for the next day. He was able to diagnose the problem within minutes and get my timer working again and dryer working again. A++++++ I will only use Knaul in the future.

Description of Work: John Knaul is an excellent electrician. He is knowledgeable, courteous, fair-minded, and a true professional. He completed the jobs for which I hired him in an expeditious and methodical manner. He and his assistant Mike are very courteous. All wiring and electrical work was performed in a neat, workmanlike and meticulous manner. I would not hesitate to hire John and Mike for any future electrical work I may have. Moreover, I wouldn’t have a problem leaving John and his assistant in my home alone to complete the work; I’ve come to trust him that much. I have had bad experiences with other contractors in the past and therefore initially was a bit leery. Have you ever hired a contractor who lacks professionalism? You know—the one who says ‘hey, you got a flashlight?’ Or how about ‘can I use your ladder?’ You won’t get that or anything remotely like it from John Knaul. He brought everything—all tools and parts—on the first trip and was very organized and methodical. John pointed out some important design elements in my home wiring system that he was able to capitalize on with his improvements. He was also able to instantly identify some “mystery wires” in my home that I had been wondering about. In addition, he also noted a fairly significant ongoing safety problem that I hadn’t noticed and will therefore be able to correct. On top of that, he gave me valuable advice on unrelated problems beyond the jobs at hand at no extra charge. The price was very reasonable. The quoted price and the final price were exactly the same. He is apparently very conversant with the National Electrical Code, which he was able to quote from off the top of his head. He did the work on Saturday in order to accommodate us and arrived exactly at the agreed-upon time. I followed him around and pestered him with questions but yet he was very gracious and accommodating and answered and explained everything. (I can be a nitpicker and from that perspective, I could find absolutely nothing wrong with the work he did.) The mechanical portion of the work he performed is very sturdy. For example, the surface outlet boxes he installed are mounted in rock-solid fashion. Very pleasurable dealing with John Knaul: He is a trustworthy gentleman, with whom, in the future, I would do business on a handshake. Everything other reviewers have raved about is true in my case. This man is a throwback to a time when quality work was the rule rather than the exception. To sum up, and perhaps the ultimate accolade, he made my home safer and easier to live in for my family and me. I consider Angie’s List to have paid for itself already based solely on this one referral. I nominate Mr. Knaul for the Pages of Happiness.

Description of Work: I had this company install a light/heater fan that was is the bathroom. He had to crawl in the attic and had to install several fixtures that were close to sinks. He re-routed the wiring for a microwave to a different circuit because the microwave was tripping the breaker. He had to change the circuit breaker. He also changed a light in the dining room.

He made the appt. right away, came promptly, was very clean, curteous and efficiant. We were very pleased with his fee and will have him here if ever needed again!

+ -1 morefrom the time I called to the time the job was complete, John kept me up on everything that was going on and what the codes were and what needed to be done. He is very professional and If you are looking for an electrician, I wouldn't go with any one other than J.F. knaul Electric.
Description of Work: Installed all wire for in ground pool and all groundings to pool and ladder cups. Installed 2 separate 20 amp GFI circuits for pump and extra outlet. Ran all wire/conduits. Added 2 breaker sub panel to make connection for pool circuits. Cost included all materials. John called for an inspector to check his work when job was complete.

+ 0 moreWe contacted this businss as we needed the work done on the weekend. We were told that he could come on Saturday morning and would call 30 minutes before arriving. He did call and arrived 30 minutes later and completed the work in one and a half hours. Very courteous and imformative as he explained everything he was doing and how to safeguard the lights we chose to ensure proper functioning. Gave us alot of valuable information. He had the parts on his truck that we didn't realize we would need. The $100.00 charge including parts was more than fair.

Description of Work: The lights and outlets in the master bath were not working but no circuit breakers were tripped. We were worried it was a short in the wiring. Mr. Knaul and his assistant were at the house within 10 minutes. It turned out that there was no problem; I had triggered a GFCI switch and it needed to be reset. He charged me very minimally for his trip. Excellent service and I would hire him again.

+ -1 morePut house up for sale on Wednesday. First prospect coming on Friday. Tried to install a new pullchain light fixture in the laundry room of my 80 year old home. The wiring was more complicated than i thought and i ended up knocking power out of half my house. My wife called John in a panic Friday night. John called us back at 8:30 Friday night and was at our home at 10:30 Saturday morning. John tackled the problem like a pro and even helped fix a doormant doorbell that i hadn't used in years for no charge. Even replaced the old doorbell button from one he had in his truck. Since the price he charged me was so reasonable i asked if he could look at a faulty closet switch in my spare bedroom. He didn't have a replacment switch in his truck but drew a diagram on how to fix it on the back of the invoice he gave me. It's reassuring to know i have found an electrician i can trust for future jobs. I would recommend John Knaul in a heartbeat.

+ -1 moreI turned on a light in my home and several circuits blew out. I checked the breaker and none of the switches were tripped. I put in a call to John Knaul and left a message. He got back to me within hours, and it was Sunday. I called him back late and he came the next morning, on time. He explained what he was looking for as he worked, and that made me feel good about the process. He was here for several hours and found the source of the short out despite the fact that it would not short out while he was here. He did a few other things that needed attention before he left, and charged me a very reasonable amount for the time and the parts required to finish the job. He was polite and answered my questions with respect and thoroughness that amazed me. I will definitely call him again.
Description of Work: Found a source of short outs in my electrical system in my home, despite that they were intermittent and would not "perform" while John was here.

+ 1 moreExcellent quality and service. He's very professional and he does very good quality work. I would highly recommend him for both big and small electrical work. He's done new construction and even some commercial work, but is also willing to do small jobs as well. He even talked me through a minor repair on the phone that he thought I could do myself! And he was right.
Description of Work: John has done both exterior and interior work over the past 6 years. A few years ago he replaced the service line to the house and upgraded our circuit breakers. He's also installed motion lights for us, ceiling fans, etc. He has upgraded our outlets, added grounded outlets to our office.
