Our experience with Hoxie's Painting was a nightmare. Everything seemed great at first, then everything went downhill fast as the project neared "completion". The only thing that seemed important was for the foreman to be "done" and to have his payment, and he was relentless about getting out of there. After a couple walkarounds having to point out glaringly obvious issues, we gave in and wrote a check. Later that day we realized the interior of our porch was not painted - this had been discussed multiple times and was part of the contract. Seeing this, we canceled the check because the contract had not been respected. Two calls and texts to Hoxie's to let them know of this issue with no response. Despite this notice and outreach, the company still tried to deposit our check. In the meantime, we realized the full scope of disregard for us as customers. In addition to the unpainted porch (which I ended up painting myself), most of the house appears to have a single coat of paint on it with poor coverage - not the contractually agreed-upon 2 coats we paid for. Damage in the form of excessive paint smears and drips on brick facade. Everywhere we look, there is a complete lack of commitment to quality. As a professional painter, the foreman 100% had to know this was the case, and we realized that we had been taken for a ride. Instead of contacting me, Hoxie's enlisted the same foreman who had cheated us to fix the problem. If the owner had ever responded, we would have been clear that this person was not welcome back. He first called my wife who could not speak at the time, then showed up unannounced and uninvited the next morning. By the end of the day, we had ignored 13 phone calls – calling, calling repeatedly. Extremely unprofessional. As this was happening, I left a voicemail and sent the owner a text saying this was not ok, please leave our house, and call me back immediately. When the owner responded 7 hours later, I let him know that we were now done with Hoxie's Painting and would not welcome the company back to complete the job. We would pay for what had been done, but would not pay for what had not been done. The owner offered to discount about 8% from the original fee, and I proposed to pay approximately 33% less than the original fee - based on my feeling that about 2/3 of the project had been completed. The owner agreed to my figure and I sent a text summarizing our conversation asking him to respond in agreement before I would send payment. He responded that night by threatening to sue me for nonpayment plus legal fees. To be fair, I invited the owner over to look at the house because he had not seen the issues in person. We had an honest conversation as I showed him the issues, incomplete work, and damage. He offered again to send somebody over to fix the issues, and I told him we were not open to that option. The owner said it would take a single painter “a few hours” to fix everything. I completely disagree with that assessment – for starters we feel the house needs another full coat of paint. The owner would not budge from his 8% reduction and implied that I was in the wrong because we refused to allow the company back to our home. In my view, it’s a privilege to have paying customers. And when we are misled, subjected to unprofessional behavior, and threatened legally, a company loses that privilege because we no longer trust that we will be treated with respect. In the end, we paid the owner his requested fee in exchange for a receipt indicating we had paid in full – making it clear that we were very unhappy. We likely lost a significant amount of money and will have to hire somebody to complete the work next year. At the end of the day, the legal threats, stress and headaches were simply not worth the trouble and we paid to make it go away. That's our experience.

My elderly neighbor hired Hoxies Painting to paint the exterior of her house and asked me to be her eyes as she is nearly blind. A two-man crew began by power washing the house, badly. No soap was used and the upper parts of the house were barely wetted. Much loose/peeling paint was removed from the shake shingles by the power washer, especially along the rooflines. The next day I observed the same crew setting up to spray paint as I was leaving for an appointment. When I returned about four hours later the painters were gone and all the shake shingles were painted. Upon close inspection it was clear to me that no primer was used to prepare the bare wood for paint! When I asked the foreman of the job why he wasn’t priming he claimed that he did prime. A bold-faced lie. Later I witnessed him scraping the upper fascia and soffit and applying paint right over the bare wood. He said “you can’t tell the difference” and “we don’t prime any bare spots that are smaller than a quarter. “. ***? Anyway, this guy says he’s done with the job after dark on Saturday. He packs everything up and tells my neighbor he’ll be back in the morning to do the walk-around. He doesn’t show or call on Sunday morning as promised. Finally on Tuesday he shows up with his boss, Brendan Hoxie, and we look at the problems with the job. Obviously the unprimed and painted wood cannot be undone but a list of “touch ups” is compiled and his man Zack and another guy spent a half day on this. After pointing out to Zack that there was paint to remove from a window he became agitated and said he was done. So, in addition to the fact that so much wood was painted but not primed, the job had many more problems including: areas not scraped but painted over, holes, gaps, and seams not caulked, areas missing paint entirely, paint drips and overspray on glass, rotted soffit board not replaced, rotted shake shingles not replaced, the only window to be painted was not done (only the frame). I just feel sick about this and have to believe that my neighbor was taken advantage of. She certainly would have had I not been involved. This is nothing short of criminal. I have 50 years experience painting houses and am simply stunned by the poor quality of this job and the seeming lack of ethics by this outfit. I figure that less than 8 gallons of paint was used and less than 50 man-hours was spent on this job for a cost of $7,260! If that’s not a rip-off ….. Hoxie offered $300 off for “the hassle.” What a joke. Unscrupulous, dishonest, and extremely poor quality. The photos here were taken a couple days after they were done with the job and are representative of the entire job.

The actual job went fine until 2 months after the job was done I started to notice some peeling of paint. When I reached out to Brenden Hoxie of Hoxie Painting, he refused to call me back. The job has a 5 year warranty on it supposedly, but that does not seem to be the case let alone a warranty of any kind since he refuses to call me. The other thing that was strange is he quoted me a price and then when the job was done he charged me more citing that the quote did not include tax and the additional charge was for tax. I have never had a contractor do this before. Ended up taking him to small claims and I won the case. He was going to repaint the house and ends up telling me he won't unless I met his conditions which included taking down my BBB review which was done 8 months before I took him to court. Think twice before hiring them!

Mark Hoxie signed a contract with us on 10/19/10 to prepare & paint the exterior of our house early Spring 2011. We gave Mark Hoxie a check for deposit of $ 2775 and he cashed it on 10/28/10. No work was done on our house by Hoxie's Painting through April - August 2011 despite our many many phone calls that we made to Mark Hoxie inquiring why work was not even initiated. Mark Hoxie continually promised the work would be done. On 8/24/13 Mark and Brian Hoxie "visited" our house and said work would begin immediately. We were told that Brian Hoxie was the foreman for this job. We made several more calls saying that we wanted the job completed as promised. No work began until 9/12/11 when we were away from our home! House was power washed and left with paint all over - no clean up, wood damaged, caulking blown out around windows and other areas. On our return we inquired when job would be completed as the weather was excellent for finishing the job. 9/26/11 phone call Mark Hoxie again promised to complete the job properly. 9/26/11 Brian Hoxie promised work would be done. 10/5/11 Brendan Hoxie called to say he would be completing the work. 10/9/11 Brendan Hoxie came to our house with no crew to do work and no paint and removed a ladder from our yard. We made many more calls to Mark Hoxie through October saying that work was not done on our house according to our contract and that we have a signed contract with him to complete this job and we want it completed He left our home in deplorable condition and he promised to do the job and was not doing so. We have photos documenting the mess our home was left in. 10/28/11 we sent Mark Hoxie a certified letter re their breach of contract. We attempted to resolve this problem and loss of our money and damage to our home through the Attorney General's Office and the BBB but did not receive any response from Mark Hoxie or other Hoxie's involved. We went through Syracuse Small Claims Court and on May 17, 2012 a judgement was enetered by the court In Favor of my husband And Against Mark Hoxie/Hoxie's Painting Co.Inc. Syracuse NY. The Total Judgement was for $ 2795. Mark Hoxie did not appear for this court date and has not responded to this judgement and has not return ed our Deposit and has not responded to our letter requesting settlement of this issue by returning our $. Of course we had great worry and upsetment over this whole incident. Hoxie Painting and all involved took advantage of us and took our money.
Description of Work: We signed a contract to prepare and paint our house Spring 2011. Mark Hoxie said we were first on their job list because we gave them a deposit October 22, 2010 which they cashed.
