From start to finish the project went smoothly. Harry was flexible and responsive when making his first site visit and again when returning to do the job. He arrived promptly with an assistant who worked along side preparing the footings, the beds of gravel and placing the stones. I was told that my zip code 10516 is a bit further afield than they typically will travel, but I'm glad I asked to begin with. The steps are LOVELY and have garnered high praise from neighbors and passers-by. They have been referred to as "the Andrew Goldsworthy of front steps" -- high praise indeed!
Description of Work: Dry-laid bluestone steps were built for my newly restored porch on my house built ~1901. Harry first came to the unfinshed porch worksite late last fall, took measurements and discussed with me the kind of stone steps I was looking for. We reviewed photos of work he had done for other customers - many of whom had much larger projects than mine, but it gave me a very good idea of the kind of detailed work that he does. We came to an understanding of what I needed from the project. It was important to me that the treads not look too new or crisp or have sharp corners of newly cut stone -- that they look older and suited to the age and era of the house. Harry returned this spring with hand selected stones for the risers and importantly - perfectly sized treads that had been conditioned to reflect the level of wear I was looking for. Over the course of a half day, the steps were carefully constructed, made perfectly square the porch, square to each other and perfectly pitched and leveled.
