Steel City Electric is owned and operated by Thomas Schuler, a licensed Master Electrician who has been working in the NY tri-state area for 15 years. Tom was quick to respond to my internet query for an electrical contractor. He was the only contractor who agreed to my request for a written ballpark in advance of an on-site estimate. I sent an Excel spreadsheet with a list of the jobs I needed done and he fired back an itemized pricelist-very helpful! Tom followed up with an in-home estimate where he offered some advice and slight changes to my proposal, yet quoted a total price that remained relatively quite competitive. Some other contractors had emailed me total prices or done in-home estimates that were ridiculously expensive. Tom then quoted me a total price which he stuck to throughout the job in spite of the fact that there were a couple of small upgrades he needed to do to accomplish the job properly. He showed up when he said he would. He communicated with me throughout the job to ask my opinion when certain choices had to be made. Then when the job had to be extended to an additional day I understood why it was the case and he made it back in a timely manner to complete the work. He even brought his daughter along with him who has been apprenticing with him since she was small and she turned out to be a quite skilled at attachments and setting up the new circuit panel. I liked the family touch this brought to the job since I have a daughter as well. The completed job was fully functional and the worksite was left clean. When I mistakenly thought there was an issue with the fan attachment and light fixture, Tom patiently worked it out with me by phone and offered to return to the job the next day (that turned out to be unnecessary) even though he lives 90 minutes from my house. Steel City Electric Ltd. is registered in multiple counties in the NY tri-state area and in my county (Suffolk) Tom is licensed and insured, and in good standing with the local contractors authority (I checked with them in advance). At the end of the 200 Amp upgrade when it came time to attach the main power line, Tom went to great lengths to get LIPA to install a brand-new mainline into my house (which was needed, but LIPA is famously slow in responding to such work orders) and do so on the day he was working. Tom was forthright in providing his licensing and insurance references and told me I was right to check into a contractor's background before hiring them.
