I contacted Joe in June. He said he would be able to do the job around the end of August. He actually started September 13. This was OK with me. I had wanted proof of insurance, which he sent me. I contacted the insurance company, which verified that the insurance was valid. This was a concern for me, as the height of the building makes for a dangerous work condition and I didn't want any problems or injuries to the workers. The guys were strapped in while working on the scaffolding, and there were no injuries. Eight guys worked for 10 days, the last day until 7:00 PM. The guys were all nice. They started every morning by 8:30 AM and worked until 5:00 PM. I have a Bay window, and while painting the top of thebuilding some drops of paint fell on the new roof that was installed on the Bay window. Joe had the roof removed and redone. I had given Joe a $7.000. deposit, half-way through I gave him another $7,000, and the rest on the last day. There was no pressure on his part. Over all I am very happy with the results: I got what I asked for and there were no hassles of any kind. I need to do some steps and some stucco work and will hire him if he is available
Description of Work: Stripped roof, replaced all the wood, removed a chimney , repaired another chimney, stripped old asphalt tiles on side of building (three stories high), wrapped side and insulated all around, did siding, trim, gutters and cleaned up. Building is about 45 feet high: Big job.

We waited over 20 years to have siding put on our house but we finally did it. All I can say is "what were we waiting for?" Joe was very personable and respectful of myself and my husband. He outlined all our options and patiently explained all the different types of insulation and siding. He had a professional looking portfolio of work he had done on similar houses and we could see what it would look like. He helped us make design decisions, e.g. did we want shutters or not. When his crew arrived, they were wonderful. Extremely professional, polite and hardworking. They arrived early in the morning and most evenings worked until 8 pm when it got too dark. They tidied up every day. At the end of the job the area looked spotless. Our neighbors were pleased :) The work was completed in about a week. We did not have any problems with the workers, they did their jobs very well. Our neighbors have all admired the house and said how wonderful it looks. I feel so happy every time I pull up in front of my house and see how beautiful it looks. Thanks Joe and crew for a job well done, and I would be happy to recommend this company to anyone.

I called Joseph Ashley in the spring to schedule a siding/window replacement job. He gave me a very competitive price and we scheduled the job for mid to late July. The job was delayed several weeks due to the weather, rain had backed him up on some earlier jobs. Joseph promised me that the job would be completed before Labor Day and it was. He did a great job and his team was thorough and paid a lot of attention to detail. They cleaned everything up and removed all debris. I would certainly recommend Joseph Ashley to anyone. I am very happy with the work and love the look of my house.
They did a better job than I expected! I am very satisfied with the work that was done! Everything that they have done looks fine. The contractor was very knowledgable. The workers were very professional and friendly. They cleaned up as they went. They did a great job! They even vacuumed the house for us! I would recommend their services!
Description of Work: There was a leak in my living room over the window. I have a dormer and there was a leak from the ceiling. I had attempted to repair it myself, but it kept getting worse. I had buckets to catch the water near both leaks. They changed the window in the living room. They repaired the wood that had been damaged by the water. In the dormer they replaced two windows. They repaired the wood damaged by the water here too. They replaced or repaired the ceilings and painted where the replacements and repairs were done. They removed the existing roof and replaced it completely. They put vinyl siding on the dormer room that looks great. I had installed aluminum siding on my home years ago and the contractor wanted to remove that aluminum siding, but there were some places it had come loose. When he installed the vinyl siding, he replaced the aluminum siding and it looks great!

Joe is a professional who obviously loved his work. He done a very professional job for us, and we are very happy with the quality of the materials and the job that he had done. The new roofing is a bit like trading a Toyota for a Mercedes. He has done all that is within his power to help and satisfy our wants and needs, even those he is not in complete agreement, and we appreciated his efforts. He returned our calls, even on a Labor Day afternoon, when it is a national hoilday, when we encountered a problem, he send over his men to help and take responsibilities. We have no doubt that he will honor his words and will stand behind his works (of which he is very proud of) in the future. We are giving him a grade of A, because that is the maximum we can, but he really deserved an A+. Thanks Joe, from an appreciated customer, Pan from Flushing.

I called to schedule an appointment on May 25, 2013 for an estimate, spoke to Joe Santilo. His initial attitude and sentences were like "so you know all about us, we are good". I knew he was referring to all the positive reviews from Angie's List but honestly I don't think I "knew" all about them because I had never used them before, and I had not been referred to them by anyone. When I met with him on June 1, 2013, he had the same attitude again. I didn't care or mind but felt a bit uncomfortable with that. What happened later was totally disappointing -- our situation was that we had two layers of shingles on our roof, we wanted to tear off all the shingles and put up new shingles. There is no leaking on the roof, but the existing shingles were old and torn, and some of them came off after Sandy. During the whole time I did not say I wanted to do anything else. However, Joe started to criticize how bad the condition our house was -- he said we needed to redo the chimney because top part of the chimney, about 3 feet from the top, where there was no siding covering the bricks, showed some cracks. I said there was no leaking on the chimney or the roof, I didn't want to do the chimney at this time, but he insisted and said he would not warranty the roof if the chimney was not done. He gave me an estimate of $16,500 for the roof and repairing the chimney. I repeatedly said I didn't want to do the chimney. He said he would refuse the job if I didn't do it. I asked what the estimate was just for the roof, excluding the chimney, he gave me $16,000. Basically he just wanted to force me to do the chimney. In addition, he said he would replace all the gutters and leaders. I told him, and also it was quite obvious that, one of our leaders was new and was just installed last year. I asked why replaced the new one. He said it was because it was not customized, it was not a one-piece but two pieces joined together therefore it was not good, so it had to be replaced. Moreover, besides the chimney, gutter and leaders, he said my siding didn't look good. He pointed to my neighbors' houses that they had nice sidings, I should do the same. At that point, I sensed that he probably wanted to me to do siding too. At the end, he even said "your house needs a lot of work, some contractors don't even want to do your job. If you want to use us, you had to wait till August". Then he said he had to go because he parked his truck at the fire hydrant. At that point, I just wanted to him to leave. He's a greedy man, I will never use him and will tell anyone I know not to use him. He probably thought I was a young woman and didn't know anything about roofing, so he gave all that attitude and told me I needed to do this or that. Also perhaps some racial discrimination too because I am Asian. As a matter of fact, I had over 10 contractors over for the estimate, I did enough research to know about what drip edges are, what kind of felt paper to use, what kind of board to use when replacement was needed, etc. We finally just had our roof done in August, using someone that my friend recommended. The contractor was a big contrast to Joe -- he never forced me to do anything, gave honest opinion, fixed things because it was the right thing to do, not because he could charge more. So far I'm quite happy. I have to say given my bad experience with Joe, I don't understand how he could get all the good reviews. I also have doubts about reviews on Angie's List.

Joe and crew did an excellent job and performed most admirably. From first contact through completion, I experienced the highest level of knowledge, courtesy and professionalism that can be delivered. Every aspect of this job was addressed in detail and accomplished with flawless performance. Watching the crew work as if each were a vital part of a well-oiled machine is itself rewarding. It is obvious that each crew member knows their job well and has experience working alongside each other. Joe and his crew are a class act. If all contractors gave you the personalized attention, value, beauty and durability of their work and products as ACJ Remodeling Inc., there would be no need for an Angie?s List (sorry Angie). When the time comes for me to re-side my home I will definitely hire this contractor again. I highly recommend Joseph Ashley and ACJ Remodeling Inc.

Joe is a pleasure to work with... Took the time to explain the work and provided an accurate estimate of costs. Returned all calls in a timely fashion. Work was done neatly and clean up was good. Was really refreshing to work with a professional who you can trust
Our house looks AMAZING! We hired joe to do our roof and they did a great job. So we kept him to do more work. He's a busy guy because he does great work. If you're looking for a cheap contractor that does bad work, go somewhere else. ACJ is priced fairly and if you consider the craftmanship and work they do, the overall quality, its CHEAP. You should pay more for the quality of work. Why pay a lot to pay more later to get the job fixed? I remodeled my whole house using different contractors and the whole industry is hit or miss. Some people do great work, but too many do bad work that needs to get redone a few month later. Joe's team is a big hit! Use them. They replaced our front and back door, did siding using top of the line material (long strips of unbroken siding not the cheap short ones where you see a million seams), insulated the house with 2 inch foam, stucco parts of my house, and added El Dorado stone to my house. The finish product is night and day. I wish I did it earlier. Throughout the project, a lot of problems came up. I live in a old house, so it was bound to happen. Joe's team is great. They fixed many of the smaller problems for free. There were a few larger problems that needed correcting and initially Joe didnt even charge for it. After everything was done, we decided to give him a bit more because we had his crew do too much for us and they fixed some structual problems. His crew was working in 100 degree weather outdoors in the sun. It's hard work but they never sacrificed on quality. Every stone was cut to perfection. Every stucco wall was smoothly finished. Cesear (one of the workers) is AMAZING. He's an artist on stone and stucco. I kid you not. If he's working on your house, you'll be happy with the product. When everything was done my wife was very happy. They cleaned up the outside of my house very nicely. At first they took over my backyard and garage and filled it with so much stuff to do the job. It was insane. I didnt expect them to be able to clean it out or if they did, I expected to go back and clean it to a level I'm comfortable with. I am a neat freak and they cleaned it beyond my satisfaction. Landscapers dont even clean the backyard and lawn as well as they did. 3 different neighbors rang my doorbell or stopped by and told me the house is the nicest on the block. I live in a fairly nice neighborhood in queens so it definitely was a good feeling. I'm leaving joe's sign on my lawn for the next few weeks because of karma and I want him to continue making NYC more beautiful. Granted, I think hes very very very busy right now so you might have to wait on line. I'm lucky I got squeezed in his crew's busy schedule.

Sandy ruined our roof. Joe came and priced us right in the middle of the pack. But his reviews were great so we went with him. Reviews dont lie. Joe and his crew is the best. They finished the roof with Timberline HD. They replaced rotten wood in my roof since it was exposed for months after Sandy Storm. I didnt think missing a few shingles would have made a difference so I waited until the spring. Joe didnt charge me very much for replacing the wood. He gave me the option to do it and didnt try to price gauge me. He said it would cost $600 for all rotted wood and given the damage infrastructure it was a no brainer. He could have said another $2-3k and kept me hostage, but hes a fair man. When everything was done, I had a new roof in under 3 1/2 days. His crew cleaned up the place nicely. Joe's team was so good, we hired him to do the rest of the house a few months later.

Joseph Ashley is the David Copperfield of the Siding Industry. He will completely change the appearance of your home and you will be totally pleased with the outcome. We were! The siding on the front, side and rear of our house was destroyed by roof slate from an adjacent church, during Hurricane Sandy, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York. Of course, we also lost the basement and part of the first floor during the storm and accessed Angie's List to find a competent contractor. We've been using the List for years! We choose Joseph Ashley to refurbish the basement, so we had had a good experience with his performance and professionalism. I subsequently wrote a report on the project and published it to the List. Our house required a complete redo, which consisted of three sides; front, side and rear. We are semi-attached on the west side and acted as a buffer for our neighbor's property. The major issue was picking the siding vendor and a style and color. Not an easy thing to do! Here's where Joseph comes to the rescue. He laid out a vast array of vendors, styles and colors for us to choose from. He suggested, but did not press, on using a Canadian company called Mitten Inc. He used them on other projects and the customers were completely satisfied with the outcome. Using Due Diligence, we researched the company, on-line, and did not find any negative comments. Because the house is 25' X 25', he suggested using 16' runs to avoid too many lines where the strips abut. We chose the Sentry style with a double 4" horizontal, cedar wood pattern in Grenadier Green. We went to contract on 2/18/2013, but he was already booked for two solid months. And it was the rainy season, which compromised working outside and extended the job time on each project. When the work crew arrived, they were all business. It should be explained that Joseph has two distinct work crews. One is an Inside crew and the other is an Outside crew. The Outside crew does the siding and roofing. He also has a Clean Up Detail that collects the day's debris and carts it away. On Day One, the siding that was reachable was removed; front, side and rear. The new siding was delivered and stored at the side of the house with the costly material (Aluminum Coils, etc.) stored in the basement. The scaffolding was started at the rear of the house, as it was to be completed first. The outside crew consists of approximately ten members, some of whom, have been with Joseph for more than ten years. Everybody knows their job and are very professional. During the demolition/deconstruction phase, it was discovered that all of the windows needed to have their surrounds replaced due to rotten wood. This encompassed using many additional sheets of plywood and framing studs. A remote controlled awning also had to have its support beam replaced, as well as a light fixture. All this was accomplished with minimum fuss, complaint, or discussion. As was expected, rain delays extended the on-site time by a few days. The only glitch worth mentioning was the completion of the vestibule at the front door. The siding was not plumb at the roof line and the right side was hackneyed. I pointed this out to the lead journeyman and he was not convinced. I had him call Joseph and send him a picture of my concerns. Joseph immediately came to the residence, agreed with my observation, and had them dismantle the entire structure, roof to ground. He then supervised the rebuilding until we were both satisfied. It and the house came out beautifully. The original contract was for $14,000.00. With the additional sheets of plywood, jambs, studs and labor we agreed an additional $1,500.00 would be fair and equable. Joseph also installed a flag pole mount, under the window, on the second floor. Something I've always wanted. On July 4th I removed his business sign from the front fence. We were getting too tired of answering questions about his work and how great our house looked!

M.r Ashley explained in detail what needed to be done. He took the time to work with your schedule and pricing. It was a team effort from start to finish. The work took 3 days. Equipment was packed up at end of each day. Utilized the garage to keep things overnight and crowded the back yard with equipment for 2 days. Cleaned up after job was done. Garage side door left open on last day of service. The roof looks great.

This was a great experience with a contractor. The gutter was knocked off in a snow hail ice storm. I called and spoke to Joe Santillo about needing waterproofing and leader and gutter work done ASAP and that I needed a roof inspection by a licensed roofer for a refinancing closing. Joe was very professional and responsive. He came over to inspect the roof and assess the needed repairs the day I called. He made a through inspection and explained exactly what he recommended to prevent future water damage. He provided me with the documents I needed for the refinancing before he left and we agreed upon a date for the repair work to be completed. The team arrived to complete the repair on time and got to work immediately. When the existing capping was completely removed the extent of the water damage was uncovered. They replaced the wood, sealed the wood replaced all of the capping, leaders and gutters properly which has eliminated a water leak that has been a problem for years. I had other people try to correct this problem in the past and they all failed. Joe Santillo and his team delivered as promised they did the work in a fast professional manner and the repair was done correctly. They left the property spotless. I would highly recommend ACJ Remodeling. They did a great job. Joe Santillo called to confirm I was satisfied with the work. He reminded me that he stands behind his work and if there is any problem to call him. I am very satisfied and will use this contractor again in the future.

Joseph's crew was always on time, always there when he said they would be there, and they knocked the work out in consecutive, full work days and got this major project done quickly (but thoroughly.) Everything went exactly as Joseph said it would and he even tightened up and waterproofed a few extra areas for us at no additional cost. We plan on using Joseph Ashley again when it is time to replace our roof.
Description of Work: Joseph and his team are the consummate professionals. His men work hard and do amazing work. The gigantic, full brownstone side wall we had stuccoed has been admired by the whole neighborhood. On the day that Joseph and his crew finished the project, an MTA bus driver even stopped his bus in the middle of the street to ask Joseph for his business card. In addition to the vast stucco work, Joseph built two beautiful cement ledges to cover some of the awkward angles of the building and ensure proper drainage for rain.

I called ACJ about a month ago, his was one of 3 companies I called from Angie's list. Out of the 3 he was the only one to return my call. These guys are busy but Joe made time for me, met with me and gave me an honest estimate. We signed the contract and it took him about 3 weeks to get started (as I said, this guy is busy). His guys came in and started working right away, they worked fast and efficient. Along the way we encountered a problem, my roof/ceiling was much more damaged than we had originally thought so while the guys were working the interior ceiling came down. I started freaking out and panicking because based on my past experience with contractors I assumed I would be told tough luck and we have to clean up this mess on our own. Not so with Joe, the man is a class act all the way. He came in, looked at what happened first he gave me an estimate about how much it would cost, I hesitated a little and when Joe noticed that he offered to fix the whole mess for free. That ladies and gentleman is a man who doesn't care about the bottom line, he was most concerned with making sure I was happy. Eventually we agreed on a fair price because at the end of the day there was no one to blame for what happened, something bad happened and Joe fixed it. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone. He is worth the wait and I will definitely be using him again. Thanks Joe!

The work lasted two days. The workers performed a meticulous job on replacing the windows. I had used them previously for windows and they did a good job on the installation. The frame in the bathroom was supposed to be a tile frame. However with the previous owner's installation of the bathroom window being a less than stellar job; the tile work turned out to be a larger task than the quoted price. We reached an agreement on a metal frame installation with some changes to the existing tiles. The workers did a good job with the proposed changes. The window sill installation caused a small amount of damage on my newly built PVC decking. The acknowledged their mistake and replaced the piece of decking that was damaged. It was minor damage but they fixed it knowing that it was a newly built deck.
Description of Work: Five windows were replaced Four window sills were replaced One bathroom window frame was replaced
First the back story. We live in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY. One block from the waterfront. The new home of Cunard's Queen Mary2, et.al. My wife and I had just finished a one year complete remodel of our three story house; from basement to top floor. The only things left to do were install new inner front door and railings for the new stairs. We treated ourselves to a cruise and (Thank God) hired a house sitter. We survived Irene, so how bad could this Sandy be. Sandy struck while we were on the ship and we couldn't get off. The house sitter was able to deal with managing the sump pumps and had everything under control until Con Edison decided to turn the electricity off. Consequently, the basement and three inches of the first floor were flooded. I'll end this horror story at this point and talk about the recovery. I'm a paid member of Angie's List and have been using it for years. So, in researching the List, the top candidate appeared to be Joseph Ashley dba ACJ Remodeling Inc. I reached out to Joe and he immediately responded and we met that day. Now, be warned, that Joe does not "suffer fools gladly." He is a busy, professional businessman. Although empathetic, he will not join hands and sing "k** ba yah" with you. Presently, he must plan four to six weeks ahead because of the amount of work he's faced with in addition to Sandy. Using due diligence, I obtained three other estimates on the refurbishment. Joe's was in the middle. We signed the contract on 12/18/12 and he began work on 1/28/13. The work was completed on 2/8/13 and encompassed eleven (11) work days. We learned quickly, that Joe will NOT nickel and dime you to death! He did not hold us to the confines of the written contract, which he could have. So, it was comfortable to have some wiggle room and not be reticent about asking to correct issues which were not contemplated for in the formal contract. Joe has two crews: and inside and outside complement. The staff that worked on our job were led by Eric who can do anything and everything. They arrived promptly every morning at 8 AM and were no-nonsense in their attitude, leaving at five PM. They policed up after every job. Joe has factored in a debris removal system that picks up garbage generated at the site and managed by Angel, another one of his great staff. At Joe's suggestion, we replaced the wooden studs with metal in order to facilitate a rapid repair in any future flood emergency. And this made a lot of sense. We allowed the basement to air dry out and had Apex, another Angie's List company, survey the building for signs of mold. Thankfully, we received a clean bill of health. What work was performed: 1. All traces of studs and supporting members were removed. 2. All walls were treated with waterproof coating. 3. New metal studs, headers and footing were installed. 4. Roll insulation was installed. 5. Sheetrock in 5/8ths thickness was installed on walls and ceilings. 6. Electrical outlets (3 feet from floor) and ceiling highhats were reinstalled. 7. Steel door 32x48 was ordered and installed for access to backyard. Outer door was sheathed for weather. 8. Two doors, swollen from the storm, were refitted to work properly. 9. One row of bricks was removed from wall to widen stairway to basement and cemented remainder. 10. Two six panel doors were installed with hardware. 11, Molding was applied around doors and base of all sheetrock. 12. Washing machine and dryer were installed and tested. 13. Laundry sink was installed and connected. 14. Access panels were installed for water lines. 15. Entire basement was painted with two coats of paint. My wife and I walked through the basement and developed a Punch List of issues needing addressing. Joe and Eric replied to every line item without hesitation or complaint. In fact, pointing out things we had overlooked in the walk through. I should also mention that Joe is a bonafide contractor recommended by the CertainTeed Corporation, which is no easy feat, as it requires written testing. I will be using Joe to replace the siding on our house which was destroyed by Sandy. But, we will have to wait until March because of the weather and Joe's other commitments.

After Sandy hit NYC, we found we needed a new roof. Based on the reviews here on Angie's List, I called ACJ Remodeling and the next day Joe arrived and we discussed what needed to be done. The roof was a tear-off. Joe showed us articles on products, samples of the materials he uses as well as photos of other jobs he has done. He explained everything that the job entailed and how things would proceed. He was knowledgeable and professional, and took the time to answer all our questions. We inquired about siding (which also really needed to be replaced) and in the end decided to go for the siding too. We received an estimate of 26,500 for all work, cart services, etc. The date for the work was an estimate for January (weather pending). On Thursday, January 3, Joe called to see if we were set to go. As promised, some of his crew showed up at 8:30 am on Saturday to receive delivery of products and set up some scaffolding. Starting Monday, a full crew was at the house at 8:30 each day. The workers were professional, courteous and hard-working. They did an incredible job paying close attention to detail, were responsive to our concerns and cleaned up by 5:00 pm every day before leaving. I would hire ACJ Remodeling/Joseph Ashley in an instant for any other work that needed a contractor and I highly recommend him.

Joe said the whole job would be completed before Thanksgiving and it was. I give this example first because he is absolutely trustworthy at his word, which to me is really important. He is the consummate professional and I couldn't be happier with the results. His crew showed up every day at 8 and worked until 6. He checks on them daily and since I work, he called me daily to make sure I was happy with the work. He and his crew went above and beyond to make sure I was completely happy. I have recommended him to family members and they are as pleased with his work as I am. You can never go wrong when you hire ACJ Remodeling. I would never call anyone else !
Description of Work: I needed to break through from the garage to the basement and then remodel the basement. The basement was an absolute disaster!
