He had a very professional presentation, drew plans etc. He even showed us a porfolio of the jobs he had done. He gave us a proposal but we had to ask for an itemized list. Once we reviewed the proposal and iteminzed costs, we agreed on the work. The addition of the port a potty was the first sign this was not going to go quickly, but we ignored that. We reviewed the proposal, he said we did not have to sign the contract, and we did not. But we did give him the deposit and he ordered the materials. Communication was to a cell number that would go to voicemail and his wife would return the calls, or send an email. We received an email that the pavers would be coming and they were delivered and he and 2 workmen began the job. The workmen did not seem qualified and could only work under his direct supervision. He began the excavation and, not able to find clay soil, had to dig deeper. We have sandy soil. That created extra removal of dirt to the dumpster that was on our lawn. Afraid that the gravel would settle into the sandy soil, he had to purchase a special fabric to place under the gravel. That delayed us a day. We had agreed on additional funds at this point and we gave him an additional check for the additional supplies. He left that Friday without letting us know the status of the job. I left him a few messages that evening and the next day without response. I continued to try to reach him by phone or email without response. Finally, on Tuesday, we received an email from his wife that they had a tree fall on their house during a storm over the weekend and they had been without electricity. It would be until Thursday until he would be able to be back. We allowed them time to secure their home. He returned for an hour or so to compact the gravel. Due to the sandy soil, he would have to water, compact the gravel and then let it dry for a day, and then repeat it a few times. Again, delaying the project. At this point we were frustrated, especially not being able to contact him directly, so he did give me his direct phone number. He had not removed a concrete slab we had by our entryway to our garage. He was using that as a guide for the height of the pavers. Since he had to dig so far, the ground was too low for our hot tub which was on the edge of the pavers. He would have to build a curb all the way around the hot tub. He began that and again needed more money. We had told him we would not do so and then received an email from his wife that he would need payment to proceed. We were hesitant, but were so far into the project we wanted to have completion, so we did give him another check. He began placement of the pavers, after 3 weeks. We were finally hopeful we would be able to enjoy our yard for a few more weeks of the summer. He went very slowly, but would continually promise us completion within a week. We had not determined the placement of the firepit, and decided on one he proposed that he would design and build on his own, with firebrick lining that would be superior to any fire pit kit available, with the appropriate drainage as well as grill designed to be removed for cleaning. The picture he drew was very appealing so we agreed, verbally. We inquired the cost, and he did not have specific numbers but would let us know. He did begin the firepit with a sitting ledge on either side. Again, we received an email with the additional costs, and we knew that we had to review all that had been done. We looked at the quality of the construction. as well as the additional costs, referring to labor hours that had not been done. He would show up at 9:30 am, work until 11:45, lunch until 1-1:30pm and finish at 2:45 pm, on the days he did show up. We took a deep look at all that had been done, the conversations, delays, costs, etc. We did some more research online and found a few unfavorable reviews and decided we would have to fire him and begin again, which is what we did. We had another construction firm review his work and the need for clay soil was incorrect. Sandy soil is the best soil and the use of the landscape fabric was not needed. The curb around the hot tub would never hold up and the firepit that he had begun was of such poor workmanship that he was stumped at what he was doing. He stated it would never hold up. When we took it down, it was full of dirt and gravel. What took him hours to put up took us 10 minutes to take down. The pavers that were laid were the wrong pitch and it would never hold up. Also, since he had to dig so deeply, we will have to regrade the yard. We have taken up all he had laid of the pavers, hired another company, have a side yard that needs complete rehaul due to the dumpster and gravel that is still on the yard. We also have hired a licensed electrician. What he had started was all wrong, using the wrong type of wire. We have learned a big lesson and do NOT recommend this company.
Description of Work: We answered an advsertisement in the Albany NY Times Union Newspaper, sometime during the week of 4/18-4/24/12.He was hired to do a paver patio fire pit, and walkway, and some minor electrical work. He also would rebuild the fence gait to accomodate the wider walkway.

Landscaper was a pleasure and seemed quite professional up until he rec'd first deposit. He came to house to do demo immediately. From then on...a job promised to be complete in 4 weeks was not more than 20 - 25% complete 8 weeks later. The company did not work full days and some days did not show up. They do not respond to calls. quality of work was sub-par. Left job site w/no explanation and completely unfinished. A true disappointment. Do not be side-tracked by the nice "presentation" he will make to obtain the job.Very disappointed and disheartened to lose so much time and hard earned money. Its a shame there are people who have businesses like this when other good businesses are suffering.
