I have been having problems with my Gas Boiler for my hot water baseboard heating system since I bought my house three years ago. I have had Service Experts come a number of times and I do not get the same answer as to what the problems are or how the system works. The last time I called them it was because my thermostat was failing to regulate the system and my heat continued to go up regardless of whether the thermostat was on or what it was set at.The technician that came was able to solve the problem but he told me that what he did was not really a solution and that I would need an $800 part in order to fix it. I did order the part but the system seemed to be working fine so I canceled it the next day and it has been working fine ever since. Everything turned out fine. He only charged me the renewal cost for a one year service contract and a discounted diagnostic fee (due to being under contract. However, the fact that he set me up to purchase an $800 part to fix the problem that was unnecessary was troubling. The house is supposed to have three heating areas controlled by three separate thermostats. One area is intentionally disabled (the basement, as we are not currently using it as living space, the second area is the bedrooms and that regulator does not work but the baseboards in the bedrooms seem to be controlled by the third thermostat and regulator which seems to work fine.
Description of Work: The technician was called in to get the the thermostat working. He did succeed in doing that but tried to get me to have a followup appointment that would have cost me over $800.

Our air conditioning has to be in the basement so it is a little more complicated. We could have had it done cheaper but we opted for a better unit with a guarantee on it. We have used them for a long time; they installed the first air conditioning unit 15 years ago and at that time it was a family business. I didn't compare the price with anyone, but the price seemed fair. The salesperson and the installers were very professional.

I did not get them off Angie's List originally myself, but I know they are listed. They are very good. They arrived when they were supposed to. They did the job. They were courteous. They explained what they were going to do and they did it. We haven't had any issues. It was expensive. I don't have any comparison for their price. I just got an estimate and got the work done. I have a service contract with them.

The old condensate pump kept turning on and off. I called and asked for the price to replace condensate pump. The operator could not put me in contact with anyone who would give me an estimate. I told her to schedule a service call without the estimate because I used them for annual maintenance. The technician did not have the same brand as the old pump and said that they had stopped using the old brand. The final price was $250 which included a 20% discount on the pump as we had annual maintenance contract with them. I thought $250 was a bit high but I did not know what the pumps cost. Afterwards, I looked on amazon for condensate pumps and found the old pump we had for $40 and no listing for the new pump. At this point I was not happy with the $250 price tag as the pumps were cheap and the job only took about 10 minutes. I would not be complaining here if t was just a matter of cost but the new pump is much louder and wakes up people on a regular basis.
Description of Work: The condensate pump was replaced on ac/gas heater.

I am not happy. The technician did 1.5 hours of work. They charge $120.00/hr for labor. Even with a half hour travel time the labor was $240.00. They charged a flat-rate for the job, which means I paid $260.00 for a part that costs tops $100.00. Check the price at Granger.com for example. I was a customer for three years. Not anymore.

I call this company because I have a service contract with them on the furnace and I did not want anyone else to work on it at all except these folks. The basement work started on 6 July 2011, I had Roland Dawns suspend the furnace a couple of days prior. When I called them, they came over the next day and did the work. I paid them in advance so, I new they were paid. All they had to do is reset the furnace after the basement contractor was done. I called, to let them know the contractors were done, this was just before the hurricane came through, they informed me they would be here as soon as they could, it took them 3 days after I call to show up. That is fast especially after a natural disaster like we had. They came by and finished the work and they said they will set up an appointment for me, to have the furnace serviced before using it. These guys are professional and they really know their stuff, keep it up.
Description of Work: Support furnace while basement being redone, had to lower floor so you have head clearance.

Having my basement floor lowered to accommodated for head clearance, the basement is not a full basement it is a 3/4 high than a normal basement, I had to bend over to avoid hitting my head on the floor Joyce and support beams. So, we decided to have the floor lowered and the wall redone. I had to call the heating company because the heating system was place real tight to the floor Joyce and the old deteriorating floor, most of the floor was turning into sand and also started to get ant hills. The ants eat right through the floor. The floor was breaking up because it was only 2 inch thick, not mixed right and over 20 years old, so it had to be replaced. I consulted a engineer and a basement contractor on what I could to corrected this. They both came up with the same conclusion that the floor had to be redone and it should be at least 4 inches thick with drainage to prevent any water building underneath. The basement contractor informed me that the heating system had to come out or suspended some how so they can get the floor out. So, I called this heating company because they where the ones who put the system in and it is only 6 years old and I did not wanted to void any warranties that the system had and they did a wonderful job on putting it in. I called them and they came over they same day and assessed the situation and recommended to support it to the Joyce with metal straps. I informed them to go a head and they did it that day. This company is a professional and experience people and I am glad I hired them instead of someone else.
Description of Work: The heating company suspended my heating unit to the floor Joyce so the basement contractor could remove the old floor under the heating system. The supported by using metal straps to keep it in place, once the contractor is done replacing the floor, this company will come back to secure and support the heating unit.

My air conditioner broke down while I was out of town during the long July 4th weekend. When I got home, it just cycled as usual, but no cool air came through the vents. I called a couple of air conditioner repair places I found in the phonebook, but then, after checking into their performance reviews on Angie's List, (which this situation prompted me to join) I promptly cancelled those service appointments. Being a relatively new homeowner, this was my first experience in having to seek outside service assistance, and I was, admittedly, a little lost as to who to call, who had the best reputation, etc. I found Roland J. Down, now known as the Service Experts, and following my careful research into their performance reviews on Angie's List, I booked my service appointment with them. I found the staff very helpful and willing to work around my busy schedule as a healthcare provider. The service technician, Doug, arrived well within the time scheduled and within 15 minutes, had my air conditioner problem identified. Fortunately for me, the capacitor had imploded but was replaceable. Inside of 45 minutes form the time Doug rang my doorbell until he walked back to his truck, my problem was solved. My ancient air conditioner (25 years old) was once again happily cooling down my house, just in time for our July heatwave. Now, I know I was reasonably fortunate, and dodged a serrious bullet by not having to replace the entire unit. But, I also realize that a less reputable company might have told me my entire unit was shot, and that I'd be looking at $4000 to $5000 to replace it (my new unit would require new equipment to accomodate the new coolant required by the EPA, or whatever governing body regulates air conditioner coolant). I asked Doug about all this, he gave me a rough estimate of pricing, but didin't pressure me into a hard sell. With this information, I will be able to plan for this cost outlay. And I'll be replacing the unit in the spring, just not in the midst of a heatwave. Overall, I was very pleased with the level of professionalism and service provided to me by Doug and the staff of Service Experts / Roland J. Down. I would not hesitate to seek their assistance again, nor would I hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a professional, reputable, air conditioer repair company.
Description of Work: Service call to evaluate and repair / replace non-funtioning air conditioner unit - Carrier Heat Pump / Air Conditioner circa 1986 Manufacture date circa 1985. Roland J. Down / Service Experts called. Technician reported capacitor had imploded - recommended replacing capacitor. Capacitor was replaced, air conditioner unit now functioning normally.

Service experts responded to a warranty call on my four year old Lennox A/C system. The Lennox warranty covers parts, but not labor. The initial diagnosis and repair of a faulty valve proved incorrect and the system again stopped operating. They next did a system leak check which took about two hours and cost $417.30 (including tax). This check identified a faulty A-coil which they replaced. The system is now working properly. After negotiations, the total cost to me was over $1000.00. Excluding the initial incorrect diagnosis and repair, they worked on the system about five hours. I feel their rates are too high.
Description of Work: Service Experts performed warranty service on a home central A/C system. After a mis-start, they replaces the A-coil and the system now seems to be working properly.

I’ve used them for years and I’m very happy with them. Roland J. Down is the owner. I spend about $150 to $200 a year. They show up when they are supposed to. They do the work and everything continues to run properly. Overall, they are very good. I don’t know who to compare them with because I’ve been using them for a long time and I don’t know what the other guys are like. Their price seems to be fair, but I haven’t shopped around. The quality of service is excellent. They are very responsive, punctual and professional. I would continue to use them in the future.

We contacted RJD in the wintertime for an estimate. Brian came and gave us the estimate and we were very comfortable with Brian's professionalism and the estimate as well. On June 20th, 2011, two young men came, their names were John and Luke. They were here for a week, installing the system, some days were extremely hot. I must commend them both on the professionalism and politeness, not only with me, but also with each other. No swearing at each other, no rude or crude remarks when something wasn't going the way they planned. As for neatness and cleanliness, they cleaned up everyday and were very careful when going through the house, as well as respectful of my needs and my guests, if I had had any here at the time. Brian and Al visited during the process to insure that everything was going the way it should and they were also very pleased. These days it is very rare to find respectable young men and women, I was extremely and overwhelming pleased with John and Luke.
Description of Work: They installed central air conditioning through our attic for our living space and also for our sun room. I was amazed that all those huge pieces of tubing and blowers were able to fit up there. it is quite comfortable here now that this was installed.

They would be coming for service in a couple of months, we have a yearly service. We pay in advance and the last time I paid was for two years. We have used them for years and we are satisfied. When they have come they might be explaining what they are doing but objectively with me I need the explanation. We have a couple of pets who shed and so the air filter needs to be changed and it's not the ordinary furnace filter. It's a little more complicated than just taking it out and sliding it in. They guy puts one in when he comes to do the service and then we have found that one more is all that we need for the year. They haven't tried to push more on us or anything like that. They tell us what to look for and my husband just takes care of it. I haven't done comparison shopping but I think the price is the best.
Description of Work: We used the service of Rowland J Down Service Experts for heating and air conditioning. They do whatever needs to be done to service the air conditioner and the furnace and make sure that it's in working order for the upcoming year.

I contacted them for an estimate, and they provided me the same on inspection. They were there for the installation in 2 hours and spent half a day to replace the old water heater with a new one. They did exactly as required and charged me the same as estimated. I wanted another system which was expensive, but, they advised me that was not worth, as I could go for a much inexpensive one. I was rest assured about going with their advice because if there was any problem, they would come out immediately. The job they did was of excellent quality. During the process of installation, they ensured not to wet the floor. I liked their services a lot and will use the same in future.

They arrived in the time frame they said they would and, after reviewing the job site, started right into the work. The service technicians were friendly and helpful, answering any questions and explaining the installation process. The old unit was removed without any problems and they began to install the new unit. At that point they realized they needed a special part for running the lines up the side of the house. They phoned it to their office and continued working around the missing part. An hour and a half or so later, the part was delivered - only it was the wrong one, due to a confusion in the part numbers at the supply house. So they sent the delivery guy back for the correct part and did as much installation as they could without the missing part. Finally another hour and a half to two hours later, the part shows up and they are able to finish the installation. Upon reviewing the job at the end, I asked were the 4" high-efficiency filter was. It turned out that wasn't installed yet, because the salesman had not known that for our model cabinet it would be a special order. The service technician had already ordered it and it is expected to arrive in a few days. UPDATE as of 10/28/2010: The service technician came on 10/25 to install the new 4" filter that wasn't available on the original visit. He looked at the attic unit and said that it was not installed to drain properly and was missing a trap. It needed to be raised up and the drain reconfigured. It was too late in the day to get the parts or the help to do it, so nothing was done on that visit. Finally, on 10/28 a technician came who corrected the original installation and put on the 4" filter. The unit should now be ready to go in the spring, although there will be yet another technician visit in a couple weeks to install the attic insulation that was included with the a/c package. We have reduced our original evaluation to a C because of these issues: 1) the correct 4" filter should have been included in the original order, 2) the additional part for running the outside lines should not have taken several hours to get the correct one, and 3) most important, the unit should have been installed to drain correctly, with a trap, the first time. We should not have had to deal with several technician visits to resolve preventable problems. I will probably use D.A. Bennett in the future, because they are the closest authorized service for our new A/C. But given our experience, I am currently hesitant to recommend them to anyone else.
Description of Work: Removed old central air conditioning unit and replacing it with a new energy efficient one. This included both the attic air handler, the outside compressor, and the lines between the two.
