I have had Roland J Down as my boiler maintenance company for decades as was always basically satisfied. However, in May they switched to a new internal system and got my accounts confused--they continued to charge me every month, but then also started charging me "catch up" payments on a former card because apparently lots of people didn't get charged consistently through the turnover, though I did. Ok, fine, technology is a pain, mistakes happen. However, when I pointed this out multiple times, complete with screenshots of my credit card statements and long phone calls explaining it, they somehow can't figure out the problem, have not given me a refund, and now are charging me twice a month on the *same* card. I have now paid double for 8 months. This is utterly unacceptable. Their tech guys are fne, but don't trust their finance staff. I can only imagine the mess if I were mischarged for a big project instead of a maintenance plan.

We signed an agreement with Roland J Down on 1/14/22 for a new boiler in our home and we are still waiting as of 2/27/22. If we don't call to ask for status, this company does not call to let us know. In the meantime, we have a boiler spilling oil in our home. Additionally, we have trusted them with plumbing issues. They come to repair without necessary tools or leave without addressing all issues. When you try to speak about an issue, you are bounced around different customer service people that tell you that you are not a priority. When you ask for a manager, you are told you will receive a call back. I've been waiting for a manager to call for a week. I am not the only person with these issues clearly. At this point, they more than deserve a one start review. The only person that has tried to be helpful is the sales rep.

I called on a Friday (10/29/21) for service on a furnace that wouldn't start. I was given a Saturday date and told I would receive a call the next day with a time window. Saturday, late morning, I had not received a call. I called them and was told they didn't have an approximate time, but I was definitely going to receive service that day. I waited all day and no one came. No one called. Over a week later I still haven't gotten any communication from this company. If you need an HVAC contractor you should avoid this company and call anyone that is professional enough to keep scheduled appointments, or at least call to reschedule. I'd give zero stars if Angi let me.

Worker was extremely curt, would not answer questions without rolling of his eyes and answering in disgust. He found comfort in using fowl language, at that point I told him I was not going to tolerate it, he also insinuated I was a liar on 3 different occasions re. work done by RJD and was insistent to see paper work @ 2 a.m., he also informed me that the workers that were here before him did not know what he knows and that they mislead me! NEVER, NEVER again!!! I was in tears by the time he left! Being redundant ... NEVER, NEVER again!!!

Excellent response on request for emergency service. Reliable, prompt, courteous. Searched and found replacement part to restore the unit that Saturday evening. Also followed up with additional needed repairs within two days. So very pleased.

Misquoted amount of sales tax. I gave them the NY Department of Revenue webpage URL for determining sales tax rate based on address where transaction occurs, they blew me off. I haven't agreed to sign the contract.

I used them 2 times over decades for heating/air conditioning needs, and it was fine. Called about my plumbing problem - they charge $99 just for COMING OVER TO LOOK! Any labour is extra..... Never will use a company that uses such shabby practices. I have a plumber coming over tomorrow, to give me a no-obligations estimate....

They said someone would come Friday between 4 and 6. I had to leave at 6:30, so I called at 6 and he was running an hour late, so I rescheduled for Saturday between 4 and 6pm. He finally arrived at around 7. He then changed the (admittedly very dirty) furnace filter and the heater started right up. Then he showed me a bit of how the furnace works, showed me some rust in the burner enclosure (normal for older furnaces), and recommended replacement ($6000-$8000 rough estimate) sometime soon due to possible issues with the primary heat exchanger. Since the central air conditioning is also connected, he also mentioned replacement of the A/C (it would be cheaper to replace both together). He charged me the $90 fee to show up plus $65 for his time (30 minutes), plus tax. A week later, the furnace started throwing the same error code again (pressure switch for the burner air exhaust). I hired a different contractor who came out, and once I told him about the Roland J Down diagnosis, he checked for drainage of the condensate lines, and found them to be almost completely blocked (after a period of non-use for a few hours, the lines drained and the heater functioned, but with repeated use the lines filled with water and tripped the pressure switch). He cleaned out the condensate lines (which is part of normal recommended maintenance that the Roland J Down contractor did not do), and the furnace works great again. He recommended no replacement of the furnace since I also have a wood stove as backup. This second contractor mentioned that a replacement furnace would be around $3000 vs the >$6000 for the Roland J Down estimate. This second contractor charged me $120 for the trip and 70 minutes of his time, which was cheaper and he spent more time and more successfully diagnosed the problem compared to the Roland J Down contractor.

The furnace was making a terrible rattling noise intermittently when the blower motor turned on. I called them Saturday morning, and they said they would arrive between 4pm and 6pm that day. They called at 5pm and said they would be there in 30 minutes. They were right on schedule. By the time he got here, the blower had fixed itself and it was no longer making noise, so he could not easily diagnose. His only guess is that a mouse had gotten into the blower drum, and it subsequently left somehow. We have two cats, so I was surprised to hear about mice, but it's the only reasonable explanation. They charged $100 to come out and take a look, and they did not perform any work besides showing me what to look for next time it happens so I can repair it myself. $90 seems a bit steep, but it was my best option at the time. He was very professional and punctual, and I appreciated weekend hours.

They were called on the basis of an annual service contract I purchased for approx. $275. Besides annual maintenance and cleaning, the contracts buys priority in answering emergency calls. All fine and well. My complaint has to do with the exorbitant overcharges for replacing a $25 furnace igniter and their service manager's response when I called to complain about the final bill of $350 for what amounted to a 30-minute job using a very inexpensive replacement part.. The breakdown Justin offered: I get a 15% discount off $99 for the service call he claimed that was only for coming out. There is an additional charge for the diagnosis and repair of $240 to replace a part he claims cost them $80 but which is listed retail everywhere for under $30. With taxes the bill came to a sum 15X the part cost for 30 minutes labor. It was outright price gauging! Apparently I am not the only consumer that feels ripped off by their inflated service costs. When my contract ends there will be no renewing. Justin would not offer a rebate but defended their policy of overcharging. Apparently they don't care about the bad taste that leaves or some adjustment would have been made. Perhaps as a corporate franchise they don't have the leeway but one thing is certain there will be nothing favorable ever to say.about them. If they can live with that so can I.

Terrible service. They would not give me a time they were coming out until the last minuet making it hard to plan to be home. When the service man arrived he also brought a salesman with him. He barely looked at the unit instead letting the salesman run the visit. The service man had minimal knowledge about the unit deposited the company having the equipment information prior to the visit. The tracked in mud all over the house not trying to be neat. They did not listen to the information I provided or my concerns. They were only interested in making a sale. They charged a service fee even though they did not provide an actual service. Terrible experience from beginning to end. I would not use them or recommend them in the future.

Technician arrived late and refused to begin job on same day. Returned on time at noon the following day. Job was completed in a fairly timely manner but technician misrepresented final cost. Paid an outrageous sum for a relatively minor repair.

Even before we knew about Angie’s list, we’ve been working with him. We have a contract with him, a yearly contract. And they do the heating, the air conditioning, and the plumbing. And they’ve been absolutely wonderful to me. I just think they’re great. I have a contract with them so if my water heater breaks they bump me ahead of anyone. They’ve been fair to me. They are good. They contact me twice a year and we go ahead and schedule the next contract visit. They’re very efficient. You know they’re just good to deal with. The only kind of confusion I’ve had with them is with the filter I have for the furnace. It’s that it is a very large filter and they say they don’t carry it and then another guy says they do. I’ve resolved it myself and buy the filter myself and it’s actually a lot cheaper then what they sell.
