He seemed to be in a rush. He had pushed open my front door, breaking my lock, which I hadn't realized until later.

I own a small apartment building and gave Maurice a "To Do List" with several small jobs. He completed the assigned tasks in a reasonable amount of time and with minimal supervision. I would not hesitate to hire him again and would highly recommend him to family and friends.

He kept putting me off for a couple of months. I came home from visiting in Boston and he said I had the date wrong (one day off). Previous to that he called and said he was going to come but he didn't tell me exactly when. I was gone for 20 minutes to walk 2 blocks and he said that I had missed him (he could have called me as I had my cell phone with me). Now he doesn't want to do the work for me. I wonder if he even wanted to do it and he could have said so if that was the case. Now I wasted over 2 months on this guy and he's not doing the job.
Description of Work: He was going to do some work for me (he was going to redo my front steps and make them look nice).

Response from MAURICE CALIS
I decided to pass on the job because of the many confusing conversations I had with [Member Name Removed] along with an unpleasant experience I had with her in spring of 2014. At that time, I was working on a custom resizing and repair of a door in my shop for her. While doing that, she left several frantic voice mails and email, worried that I had stollen her door, which didn't make any sense since there was a 8"x12" notch at the top. When all was said and done, she was very pleased, though I passed on doing other jobs she needed done. On this recent request to have exterior stairs rebuilt, I informed her that I would not be available until June, which she agreed to, then proceeded to call several times worried about the project and confused about what we already discussed. Yet, I kept calm and assured her that it would be fine. I emailed her 5/31 to let her know I would be ready sooner than expected, but she left for Boston for the week - to which I said, enjoy your time with your family and we'll reschedule after. She replied on 6/6 that she was home but in the middle of evicting tenants, that the police is involved, and that she feared for her life. So, I continued with other work for that week. Which brings us to the days in question (from her complaint). Regarding the week of June 13th: On Monday I said I may be able to take measurements Tuesday afternoon. She replied that she left for Boston and her computer wasn't working, but she's home now, which was too late for that evening. I wrote the next day asking if Friday afternoon would work, that I had work in the morning, but I may be able to come later. She replied that she would be there all day. Yet, on Thursday she was waiting for me all day, and called to ask where I was, thinking it was Friday (my friend heard the phone conversation). Friday came and she again was expecting me all day. When I finally was ready and called to come over "in the next 15 minutes" (I was sure to communicate this, as I did not trust her), to which she agreed, she wasn't there. I took all the measurements and stayed for a while, just in case, but no show on her part. So when I called her later and she asked if I still wanted to do it, I decided to pass on the job. I don't have any problem doing work while people are away, as I do this all the time, but my concern was the communication break down and I wanted to avoid disaster. During the months leading up to this, there were several anxious conversations on the phone with her and confusion on her part about things we had already discussed, though I remained calm and understanding. I was worried from the start it might go this way, having gone through the same thing with her a couple years back, but I decided I would try to work with her. I don't like turning people's needs aside.

Maurice is simply terrific. He was punctual, professional, kind, and courteous in demeanor--all important qualities to my ninety-year-old mother. He worked with her by his side at important points in the project to make certain that the railings were an exact fit for her. He developed an efficient and attractive design to meet the challenge of the project. He estimated the time and cost of the project perfectly, and was in regular communication with me (I hired him from CT for a project in NY) to make certain that my ideas were taken into account and my hopes for the project were being met. Simply a perfect job all around.

AWESOME! I am the type of person who like to do things myself because no one else takes as much care in doing things in my house as I do. Maurice is the exception. He is the one person I have had do repairs & painting when I have not had the time to do it myself. Sometimes it take a conversation or two for us to both be on the same page but he take great pride in the work he does am I have not been disappointed. We have used him a few times and will continue to hire him in the future!

Maurice has been a wonderful find on Angie's List! I have hired him on several occasions since 2012, for some carpentry and painting. I am always delighted in the way he carefully thinks out a project, and then offers the very best solution! He is one of the MOST honest, reasonable, courteous, dependable handymen you will ever find. When I contacted him for a very special project, an art installation around 2 patio pillars, he eagerly researched and ultimately applied just the right skills to accomplish the task! I would highly recommend him to all my friends; while he's quite busy most of the year, Maurice somehow manages to get to your project in a timely manner. From returning your initial contact to final follow up, this guy's the only one I'd call!

Maurice pre-cut crown molding too short and told me that he was not comfortable installing the molding as he didnt have the proper nail gun; even though Maurice told me that he was a master carpenter. I also had to purchase another $65 piece of molding that I believe he improperly cut. The mudding was not done well or completely in garage, closet, and bedroom; and some of the caulking was very sloppy. Maurice also tried to charge me for time that he did not work. When I confronted him about the issues he stated it was correct and then the next day said he made an error. After the job was complete I noticed that the base board was marred in some areas from the nail gun. The corner round didnt cover it and I emailed him to ask what could be done. He said he really didnt have any ideas what to do about the molding and offered no assistance to fix the problem. I hired another company to install the molding but they told me that I would need all new molding because Maurice cut everything too short.I had already spent hours staining each piece.I believe Maurice made mistakes and didn't take responsibility for them and make it right in some way. This has cost me a lot more time and money for an improper job. 12/16/15-Mr. Calis did know about my complaints and as I stated, offered no help and assistance in rectifying the problems. I actually recently ran into him, and again told him my concerns and he said"it's unfortunate that it didn't work out ". I found that to be a very unprofessional and a cowardly response. People do make mistakes , The difference from a good business man and a poor one, is if they are going to take ownership and make it right for the sake of good business practice and customer satisfaction. You can make some people happy but what happens when things dont go soothly on other jobs. I think ignoring the problems is a very incompetent practice. In good faith, you made no attempt to apologize or offer a solution, personal explanation, or just plain out attempt to make things right,by me.You can write your version as you believe it to be true, but we both know you are not being cpmpletely honest. You can also keep the money Mr. Calis, but guaranteed, this type of business practice will catch up to at some point and you will pay 10 fold. Good luck with that.
Description of Work: I hired Maurice to pre-cut trim and crown molding for my house, build out the door leading into my garage, and prep the utility room for painting. I also had him do some touch up mudding and caulking throughout the house.

Response from MAURICE CALIS
It’s very common for a customer to express their dissatisfaction with previous contractors, as [member name removed] communicated to me before we started, but I am usually the one to change that trend. So it came as somewhat of a surprise recently to get this complaint, especially since I was never consulted about the apparent issues she now claims were my doing. From the beginning of my involvement, it was understood that my time was limited, as I was extremely booked, but I took her months ahead of schedule as a courtesy. It was understood from the start that she desired each piece to be cut seamlessly from one wall to the other, so that she could apply her own finish. She also required that there be NO NAIL HOLES nor ANY type of wood filler, which is why I never committed to installing them. At no time did I state that I was a master carpenter, however I do have the proper nailers (18ga brad and 16ga finish nailer), to install crown molding NORMALLY. I cut each piece to spec, incorporating a coping cut on one end so that each of them would overlap the other seamlessly. If the contractor she hired after me just put a scrap cut up to align the first piece (as I did when test fitting ALL OF THEM), there would have been no gaps. A coping cut by design covers the start of the next piece. You can’t just put up a piece and say LOOK AT THE GAP. You will never know how it fits until you overlap another piece. So, without being consulted, [member name removed] apparently spent money on new pieces and had the work done. I was never given the opportunity to support this strategy, as she didn’t contact me about it. As to the $65 replace piece or adjusting figures, there was never any dishonesty on my part, as I am always honest with my customers. It’s a situation like this that really makes me appreciate all the wonderful people that I have had the opportunity to work for. Furthermore, I have plenty of customers who can attest to my skill with installing crown molding. In fact a long time customer for whom I just recently installed crown molding has graciously offered her phone number and photos to anyone that desires a reference. I will provide that info upon request.

Had them replace the front porch. Work was done on schedule and on budget. Only delay was waiting for the building inspectors to inspect and approve the depth of the support column concert pour holes. Totally out of the builders control. The workers were very professional and accommodating. Contract was very clear and concise. All my questions and concerns were addressed quickly. I?m planning on putting a deck on the back of the house in the future and I would welcome them back to do the job. Two big thumbs up.

We were very happy with the work that was completed. Maurice is very thorough, a good problem solver, and tackles each project with the same degree of enthusiasm and attention to detail. He communicates what he is going to do in advance and follows up if his plans change or if he has a better idea of how to approach the project. He works quickly and efficiently. We highly recommend Maurice and will be using him for other projects around our home.

It went well. He had 15 minutes left and he asked if there was anything else he could fix or take a look at. This was the third time my toilet chain broke. Maurice was nice and helpful and tried his best with my tub, but he didn't want to break anything and referred me to a plumber. He was honest about it and told me that he only does minor plumbing, which I liked.
Description of Work: I needed some things tightened down that I couldn't do. There were some fixtures in the bathroom and the kitchen that needed attention. The kitchen faucets needed to be cleaned out so Maurice did that. He also fixed the flapper in the toilet.

In few words, everything went great. First, Maurice came highly recommended as both skilled and trustworthy. We left the door open for him and he came and went as needed, including when were not home. Beside his skills in carpentry and electrical, there was no job he wouldn't research and do when he felt confident that he could. Maurice was always looking to save me money and did by repairing some items instead of replacing them. Maurice's work was on time, on budget, and of the quality I expected and was promised. My schedule requirements were flexible. I would be a bit more specific about schedule the next time I use him.
Description of Work: Maurice repaired, replaced and rehabbed multiple areas inside and outside my home. He reinforced stockade wooden fencing and repaired my deck. He repaired a hole in my ceiling and painted the entire ceiling, and he repaired and painted Sheetrock in my bathroom. Maurice also rewired a ceiling light fixture that was shorting out. Finally, he replaced a screen door (fixing the frame) , a power garage door opener, and various electrical outlets.

We have worked with Maurice Calis. He is a good guy. He does really good work. I have used him several times. The last time was about 2 weeks ago. Overall my experience with him went really well. Maurice painted my 11 yr daughter's room. She was very particular and wanted one wall with stripes, one wall made into a chalk board, and 2 other walls a different color. Maurice spent a lot of time making sure it was exactly what she wanted and let her talk his ear off for hours while doing the work. The pink and black stripes were perfectly straight. The room looks much nicer than I ever thought it would. My daughter absolutely loves it!

I've used him several times. There was a period where he was in and out all the time as many things needed fixing. We kept him busy for a while. I thought he was very good and that's why I kept bringing him back. He was reasonable and the quality of the work was good. If there was a problem or something and if something was not working he would be very ingenious in figuring out how to get something to make it work. He is also very hard-working. I mean he comes in and he is like bang zoom from the time he is here until the time he leaves. It takes a while to get him but once you got him on the job then he is very responsive. The reason he is hard to get or to get him to come originally is because he is fairly popular which says something. All contractors are a bit off but he wasn't seriously off.

He was great! He was prompt, worked hard and fast, and was very reasonable. I recommend him without hesitation.
Description of Work: Maurice did many things for us: he fixed all our doors, he installed quarter round on our newly redone stairs, he hung new closet doors, and he repaired some time in the bathroom. The most excellent thing he did was refinish our wood kitchen table. He sanded it down, repaired the legs, added stabilizers, and then finished it with tung oil and poly. Beautiful! He also did a handful of other very small repairs - the things you never get to!

At first I was not comfortable with his demeanor or his hourly rate ($35/hr) because he didn't appear certain about the problem I was having with the doorknob latch or how to dismantle the defective doorknob and plate -- once he understood what I wanted he did a superb job and my kitchen door now opens, closes and locks perfectly and it matches the color of my deadbolt and other kitchen doorknobs. I found him to be fair, competent and knowledgeable ... and even cute! I believe I would call him again IF he weren't so busy.

Maurice called quickly. He is very busy due to the excellent work and his reputation so it took some time for him to be available, but the work was worth the wait. He put a lot of thought into customized shelves for a specific purpose and made them work along with existing woodwork in our home and existing cabinets. He also gave us a lead on a butcher block top (no financial incentive for him) and figured out a way to attach it to a breakfast bar with brackets to add counter space. Great attention to detail, quick worker (especially considering the quality of the work), reasonable costs and easy to work with. My wife and I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Wall-to-wall customized shelving put in for CD collection to house more than 2,000 compact discs. Also had him put a butcher block wood top on a breakfast bar to replace a granite one. This required added support brackets to match wood.
