Overall we may have to sue Kodiak in order to have the entire rear roof removed and rebuilt properly. We got no satisfaction from Kodiak and no sense that they back their work up. Their integrity seems to be totally lacking and rather than admit that by using inferior materials and changing the slope they caused extensive damage to our home and considerable distress to me and my wife. I am a disabled retiree with crushed bones in my back so I cannot do construction anymore. I need a roof that does not leak and the idea of paying Kodiak an additional $500 to fix what they did wrong is just wrong to me. I have spoken with other contractors and insurance adjusters and to a person they agree with everything I have said about the quality of the work. The first thing the adjuster said when she climbed onto the roof was alarm at the shallow slope. The poorly attached shingles were pointed out and the lack of adequate ventilation causing ice dams was noted. She immediately spotted the protruding nails as a real problem area. Kodiak will not stand by their work, they cut corners and nickle and dime to maximize profit while maintaining poor overall quality. They dismissed not only my concerns but any intimation that they have done poor work, even when they are shown nails popping out through the shingles they claim it is all my fault. Now I have to hire another contractor to remove the new roof down to the walls and replace it with the roof I originally contracted Kodiak to build. Meanwhile I am trying to tarp over the roof and patch what holes I can find. It's getting late in the season to find another roofer/contractor and winter will bring ice dams an more water damage.
Description of Work: Our back addition roof was leaking badly so I hired Jesse Boucher, a kid who grew up next door, thinking his new company, Kodiak, would do a good job. I showed Jesse the problems and he wrote something down. I told him I wanted a new roof that did not leak, with at least a 6/12 slope and if that put the peak over the peak on the main house I told him to install a gable vent. I told him I wanted full soffit venting and a ridge vent and a gable vent on the east side. We have bad ice dams here so we needed lots of ventilation and lots of insulation. When his men started the job I noticed the trusses did not look right, too shallow to be 6/12. I was told everything was alright and it would look great when finished. The trusses appear to be 4/12, much too shallow to avoid ice and snow building up. Note that the valley on the north side is directly over our bedroom. The shingles were applied starting from both sides meeting in the middle using two workers. I expressed concern that might not meet properly in the middle but was dismissed. The shingles near the middle have been trimmed back so that some of the tabs are a mere 1" across and some gaps are almost 3" across. Some of the smaller tabs have been ripped off by weather. I had asked that the valleys match the front of the house with woven shingles, but again I was ignored and they met the two slopes with a cut edge down the middle. The valley leaks. Elsewhere nails have popped out through the shingles. The plywood used was inferior, according to the owner, Jesse Boucher, and they no longer use that brand. I suggested that if the wood is no good then they will have to remove all the plywood as well as the shingles. He said nothing. As a result of the poor insulation/ventilation our bedroom ceiling is leaking, staining and the paint is peeling. We showed the attic leaks to Jesse's partner, Justin and he went ahead of us and pointed to our bathroom vent where the duct had fallen off the end cap. He suggested that this was why water was getting into the house, although I told him I had been in the attic several times and the vent had been firmly attached. I re-attached the vent. I have several pictures showing nails protruding and gaps in the trim wood, soffits falling off and ceilings stained and ruined. Kodiak's response was to offer to fix the problems for $500! he claimed that we did the damage by not using steam hoses to remove ice dams. I have been unable to find a single contractor who has heard of this solution. We use snow rakes and roof-safe ice melters. The ice dams are worse after the re-construction by Kodiak and the rake bounces sometimes, leaving nicks in the shingles. None of the nicks penetrate to the underlayment.
