About us
JBL Home Improvements, Inc, located in St. James, is a family owned and operated remodeling business specializing in residential projects. Owner & Contractor David Kaplan, General Manager Jill Kaplan, along with their team of talented professionals, are dedicated to providing outstanding workmanship and customer service to homeowners who live in their community.
Construction done...what a great job by JBL Home Improvement. They came when agreed, and took the amount of time they said - seven days. They cleaned up EVERYTHING and was completely respectful of our property. Best of all, there were no gotchas. I waited for the shoe to drop that "so-and-so" would cause them to add money to the job. That never happened. In fact, they put in new molding (a higher quality) without charging. Call them at (631) 584-0136. I have been in customer service for 34 years and I am a hard guy to please. I would not likely use anyone else. I give them an A+!
Description of Work: De-installed cabinets and countertops, cleared out dining room furniture and removed tile floor. Did a "mud" job, tiled and grouted the floor (about 275 sq. ft.). Re-installed cabinet and counters, repaired faulty plumbing, put furniture back.

JBL Home Improvements started work on 7/29/13. The workmen (the owner is NOT doing the work. He is on the job site in the morning and sometimes afternoon) were punctual and polite. Our master bathroom needed repair and renovation after the original tub fittings broke and flooded our downstairs hallway. We hired JBL to 1. demo 2. install new tile shower and bathroom floor 3. install new drywall and Durock. 4. paint 5. install new toilet 5. install new moldings 6. install new vanity 7. drywall and moldings for downstairs hallway and paint bathroom and hallway. For the most part, it was ok. Tile setter is fantastic. Some issues we noticed we brought to Dave Kaplan's attention right away and to his credit, he seemed good about addressing them. Painter was horrible. Paint left on granite in shower, kneewall, large strip of paint left on arch window that I still need to scrape off. Problems began after bathroom was finished. On 8/31/13 first day we could use bathroom after shower doors installed, the one shower head and several body sprays would not turn on. Plumber came back Monday, 9/2/13 to check. It was determined that silt had blocked showerhead but one body spray was faulty. It had never been checked properly and was not performing adequately the week before. We had extra body sprays then but had since returned them, so now we have a faulty body spray that we will have to try and replace. Worst was morning of 9/7/13. At 6 a.m. on Saturday, I woke to the sound of dripping. The laundry room ceiling and cabinetry (located directly under the brand new toilet) were flooded. We ripped open the ceiling to find that when you flushed the brand new toilet, it was leaking. I called Dave Kaplan right away. He and the plumber showed up on Monday, Sept. 9th. Right away the plumber claimed it was "nothing he did". Ok. Then Dave Kaplan claimed the leak was "nothing he did". He claimed the pipe had not been glued properly and that movement caused it to leak. What movement would that be? The demo that JBL Home Improvements did? Or the installation of a new toilet, also installed by JBL Home Improvement. Dave Kaplan refused to fix the problem and tried to charge us for the repair. A repair that entailed ripping out the brand new sheetroock (installed by JBL Home Improvements) and moving the brand new toilet (also installed by JBL Home Improvements) to replumb. We have just spent $18,000.00 plus another $10,000 on materials for a brand new master bathroom where we can't use the toilet. And we have to find another contractor and plumber and pay them to do the repair because JBL Home Improvements does not live up to their work and their promises. We have to install a new ceiling in the laundry room, wipe urine and feces scented water off the cabinetry all because this contractor insists that the movement caused by his company during demo and installation are not his problem. Best of all, he insists we can "only see our side of things". You mean the side where we just paid you, in full, $18,000 to have a working master bathroom? It was funny before how sensitive Mr. Kaplan is. In the beginning of work, his workmen were going to leave a splice in the wall. We caught it and insisted that it be put into a box in the vanity for safety. Then Mr. Kaplan insisted the splice had been left in the wall by the previous contractor. We said nothing, because, pick your battles. But the splice was white to yellow Romex. There was no yellow Romex used by the previous contractor, only white. Coincidence that the workman from JBL Home Improvements was working with a big spool of yellow Romex that day? I don't think so. Now, left with a bathroom I can't use and a contractor who won't fix it, I fail to see the humor in Mr. Kaplan's sensitive side.
Description of Work: We hired JBL Home Improvements to repair and remodel our master bathroom.

Response from JBL HOME IMPROVEMENTS INC
This is the first time in the 8+ years we have been in business that we have encountered a situation where we could not come to an agreement with a customer. We are a construction company that prides itself on our customer service. Any dissatisfaction a customer may express is taken very seriously. We were first posted on Angie’s List by a satisfied customer in 2007. Since then, we have been awarded the Super Service Award for the last three years. The customer called at 6:15am on Saturday, 9/7 saying they heard a drip in the ceiling under the bathroom. They opened the ceiling themselves and claimed the toilet was leaking. This was 19 days after the toilet was installed and being used. JBL contacted the client later that evening, on 9/7, and were onsite with our plumber that Monday, 9/9. After assessing the situation, we found it was not the toilet leaking, but rather water was coming from where the toilet flange is glued to the elbow underneath the bathroom floor. We brought the customer into the area under the bathroom and she had her son flush the toilet. It was clear to her where the water was coming from and that it was not the toilet. The existing/leaking PVC toilet flange and PVC piping were not glued properly by whoever installed it. We did not install the toilet flange or any piping below the floor for the toilet. The customer is insinuating that the demolition of the bathroom disrupted the PVC pipe causing the leak. The customer had been using the toilet for 19 days after installation with no leak. Also, there is an existing 2 inch mud base with piping for radiant floor heating in the bathroom which we did not remove. By not removing the mud base, we obviously did not disturb any PVC pipes under the floor. All we did was remove the toilet and install the new one supplied by the customer. We said we would fix the problem, but there would be an additional charge to cover our costs. The customer said that they refused to pay any money at all for the repair. Any of our past customers will tell you we have always been fair and worked with them. Again, this is something we have never experienced, a customer we could not come to an agreement with. Up until the point of the leak, the homeowner was happy and had stated that they would call us back when ready to begin their basement. We were able to help them save almost $2,000 at the beginning of the job. After reviewing the fixtures they purchased and supplied for the shower, we showed them we could accomplish the same functionality while using less equipment. The scope of the $18,000 project covered; $15,432 for the bathroom and the balance went to removal, installation of sheetrock, molding and painting of the first floor area below the bathroom. As for the additional comments from the customer… the paint on the knee wall granite and shower granite ledge was less than the size of a thumbtack and removed with a thumbnail and the paint on arch window was never brought to our attention. The electric job was not completed when the customer made mention of it. A junction box was installed, as planned once the vanity was installed. Had we been given the opportunity to fully complete tasks before being questioned by the customer each day, these items would not have been concerns. The shower heads and body sprays when they were installed, were tested and working fine. When we were informed a week later, when the shower was first used by the customer, that water was not working properly, our plumber found sediment had collected in the fixture. He cleaned it out and the water was working fine. This is a common problem that can easily be attributed to turning the main water supply off and on. The customer is asking for $3,000. It is an unfounded and arbitrary amount. It is unreasonable to ask that we absorb the entire cost to repair something that was not a result of anything we did. If we were the type of contractor that this homeowner is unfortunately making is out to be, then we would not be in business all this time, been the recipient of accolades and have a long reference list of satisfied customers. We appreciate that Angie’s List provides a platform for people to express themselves without any censoring of what they post. It is unfortunate though, that some use it as a tool in the attempt to distort the truth and tarnish our credibility.

Dave Kaplan came to my house to give me an estimate. I wanted to have the wall between the kitchen and living room reduced to a half wall. It would require a new header beam too. I also need a repair to a header beam in the basement. He had came and had some questions and ideas. He said he would get back to in a week with an estimate. After two weeks I called and left a message, but they never called back. To this day I have not heard a thing from them!

Our appointment with this customer was on 8/8. I told him we would get back to him within a week. I sent him a proposal through email on 8/13. The homeowner called us on 8/20 to say he did not rece3ive the proposal yet. I emailed the proposal again on the 20th. I have gotten receipts off my computer to say the both have been successfully relayed to the homeowner. I am not sure why he did not get them. It was my mistake not to follow up right away, I normally wait approximately 2 to 3 weeks before I will follow up, giving the homeowner time to review the proposal. I am sorry that this homeowner did not receive his proposals. I do have it if he would still want it.

Although I could not obtain Dave's services, I would definitly try again. He was the only contractor to give a detailed estimate, and returned my calls promptly. Unfortunately he was up to 3 months to confirm my job. I could not wait this long. This was my fault for waiting so long to find a contractor.
Dave and his staff did an outstanding job of making our sunroom into a beautiful three season room. Dave came to our home to evaluate the job and then timely gave us a written quote exactly as we asked. Pricing was competitive. The job started and finished as was stated during the selection process. Dave was on the job everyday and even communicated when their scheduled changed one day. The JBL team cleaned up at the end of work every day and left everything spotless when the job was completed. The quality of work was excellent and we are very pleased with results. Would definitely use JBL again for future projects.
Description of Work: Re-finished a sunroom. Ripped out old sheetrock, insulation and molding. Replaced old water damaged header. Installed new sheetrock, insulation, molding and electrical.

He gave me a very detailed estimate just a few days after our initial meeting that consisted of exactly what work was going to be completed. It was for $8900.00 which included the labor and basic materials. This was a great selling point for me, because of how detailed it was and how quickly he produced it. I paid for the tile, cabinets, toilet, etc. myself. It turned out fantastic. I have used them in the past and I knew that they did good work. He has a different worker for each aspect of the job, and they all worked very meticulously to create a masterful result. They were courteous and on time. They cleaned up, were very respectful, and carried themselves professionally.

He was prompt. He returned phone calls and came when he said he would. The site wasn't properly cleaned up after the work was done. The siding was not done in the way that we originally talked about. When he was painting the bathroom, a piece of the tile broke around the tub, and he said it was already like that when he started. I was upset about that.

We showed the [member name removed] the difference in the colors of the new siding to the existing siding, [member name removed] agreed that the siding colors blended together fine and that you could not tell the difference between the new siding and the old. We adjusted the final invoice to reflect the price for the siding installation. [member name removed] only paid for the straight siding installation, not to remove the siding from another side of the house and install it in the rear by the patio and then install the new siding on the side of the house like we had discussed. Unfortunately when we were doing the job, it started snowing, we cleaned the yard the best we could that day. I personally went back to clean anything else that we missed in the yard when the snow melted. The tiles in the bathroom were broken in the shower stall and tub areas, which I had shown [member name removed]. I am sorry that this homeowner does not feel we did a quality job. At JBL we pride ourselves with our service and workmanship.
Everything was fabulous except that they estimated 2days to complete the job but really it only took 3hrs. So that was inconvenient because we blocked out two days to be off work. Plus then it seems a little pricey if you think of it in terms of hourly rate. On the other hand, they got a lot done in 3hrs!

Outstanding!! Fast and efficient!!
Description of Work: The capping on the fascia as well as the roof needed repair due to the storms of last season. Dave and his crew were courteous, punctual and when they left it was if they were never there as the work areas were cleaned. We most certainly would use Dave and his crew again.
I highly recommend JBL Home Improvements. Dave (the owner/general contractor) is extremely punctual, friendly, and willing to listen/do some extra leg work to satisfy his customer(s). Our basement was referred to as the dungeon since we moved in, and after saving for a couple of years we decided to undergo construction to have it finished. The obvious daunting task was to find a contractor/company who would be professional, accessible, and do a quality job. We found that in Dave and JBL. We had a couple of contractors come in with quotes, but no one was as prompt and serious as Dave was. He was honest with us in how long it would take to complete the project and sent us a proposal within a couple of days. When we accepted the proposal, construction was started within a week and the entire basement was finished in under a month. Finishing the basement included framing, insulation, electric, plumbing, dry wall, painting, molding, windows, closets, shelving, doors, and new stairs. We also have a gazebo that lost its door due to Sandy, and Dave had a new one put up right away. Dave showed up almost every single day to check on what his workers were doing and even told them to re-do sections that weren't up to his standard. It was impressive to see how much his workers respected him and the company. It was also refreshing to see workers that were honest, hard working, and could communicate easily. Robin, in particular, was very friendly and was patient in explaining everything that was getting done. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised at how easy the whole process was. You read and watch a lot of horror stories about renovations and you eventually come to expect certain trends in contracting. This was not the case with JBL. We are highly satisfied with the company and love our new basement.

Great from start to finish. A true professional.
Description of Work: Excellent attention to detail. I had several estimates to have my basement finished. This was the only contractor that gave me a written estimate and lived up to every detail in it. Very professional. Showed up on time and on the days they said would. I am very happy with all the work I had done.
Work was started shortly after estimate and took approximately 10 days. There were unfortunate interruptions due to blizzard, but Dave projected correct amount of time to complete the job. Work started promptly each day, crew were friendly and professional, cleaned up each day. Painting when better than could have expected. Have already asked Dave for estimate for another job. Very pleased with they way everything went.

As always, they did a great job, were prompt, and even found a problem or two in our older home that could have been dangerous and/or expensive if they had been neglected. Another really good experience with this company!
Description of Work: JBL did a full remodel of a large upstairs bathroom (the amount we spent above includes materials). Included demolition, plumbing, electric, new doors & closet construction.
Although the work has not yet been completed thus far JBL has been prompt and on schedule. Most importantly Dave has been available during the process and has communicated regularly as to the schedule. The workers have been pleasant and answered any questions we have had. JBL is a professional company that understands the importance of good customer service.
Description of Work: We hired JBL to make repairs to our home due to damage from Hurricane Sandy. We sustained damage to our roof, gutters, as well as interior damage that included Sheetrock and painting.

The owner’s name is Dave Kaplan and he was excellent. He met the cheapest price I got from the others. He couldn't do any better. The men he had on his crew were really excellent. He had a carpenter and a plumber but he sent the plumber back twice to make sure it was fixed right. He was really very, very good. I would definitely use him again. He was here today because I had a leak and he sent one of his men to take a check. Dave came by later to see if we were okay with everything, which we were. He did a good job. Everyday his crew cleaned up after themselves. My wife and I are really happy with him. I was satisfied with the price but he wasn’t the cheapest either. I told him that there was another company that came cheaper, he asked me how much it was, and when I told him, he said he would definitely match it, and actually, he came a little under than them. It really is just a beautiful job and if I have a problem, he sends people back right away; it is not like I have to argue about it or anything. he said he would definitely match it, and actually, he came a little under than them. Description of Work: I used JBL Home Improvements Inc for remodeling my kitchen. They took out all the old kitchen cabinets and hauled it away to the dumpster. They installed all new cabinets and made sure all the appliances were in right place. They completed some work on the floor that didn’t show before, but now it does.
Overall, we are extremley pleased with our finished projects and would highly recommend JBL Home Improvements for your contracting needs. We will definately use JBL again for our next needed project(s).
Description of Work: We interviewed 5 contractors before deciding to hire JBL Home Improvements. Right from the begining, we felt very comfortable with the owner Dave Kaplan's personality, expertise and professionalism. JBL explained thoroughly how and when each part of the projects would begin and the approximate length time of completion. Whether JBL had there own workers or sub-contracted , everyone that came to our house were kind, considerate, professional, and clean. My wife ask me to include that ALL of the workers went above and beyond to make her feel comfortable in understanding every step of the project(s). We had our unfinished basement finished , Master bathromm remodeled and a small attic remodeled into a home office. Our basement is now a beautiful family room including living/TV area, new closets ,new windows, new banister ,high hat lighting and a seperate laundry room. JBL recommended a carpet installer for the basement and they worked very closey with JBL to coordinate the installation during the renovation. Our bathroom was gutted and beautifully remodeled, including new plumbing where necessary, extension of the shower area approx 3 feet (into closet space) , installed new vanity, toilet, cabinet, marble tile in shower, tile flooring, lighting and baseboard heating. The attic/storage space was turned into a small home office including a new window, electrical outlets, carpeting and new closet space.

sIt went great! Fast service, very reliable. Dave was honest when I was getting an estimate. He told me he could fix things but it wouldn't be worth it because the problem would come right back eventually. Dave was very honest and didn't look to rip you off or take more money from you. I felt very comfortable from the start. Everyone was punctual and Dave constantly kept me in the loop. Dave answered any questions I had. If they don't respond right away, they will respond that day even if its later in the day! JBL home Improvements Inc will definitely get my business again and I will not even bother to waste my time to get other estimates. This company is the real deal and this is how a company should follow. Worker did a great job! Everything was done right, cleaned up after themselves and did not rush the job! Made sure things were just right and was correct to our satisfaction. They went above and beyond. few other things i forgot to mention above, After Dave came to the house to give me an estimate, he sent the estimate via email right away WITH REFERENCES!!!!! I have never seen a company do this. Also Dave called me daily to make sure everything was going well and to see if I had any concerns or questions. They made sure I was satisfied before giving them final payment. After doing business with JBL Home Improvement Inc, they sent a card thanking us for their business. What a wonderful company. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!. Will recommend this company to friends and family. I rate this company A+ and above!

Our experience JBL home improvements went very smoothly and the finished product was incredible. Dave and his crew started early each day and I always came home to a very clean work area. For the most part they were working every day unless they were waiting for grout to dry or granite to be installed. My biggest rave for JBL was the time period it took from start to finish. We were anticipating being without a kitchen for atleast 3 months however Dave assured us it would be done in a little over a month - and it was!! The work was very nicely done and we would use JBL again for other projects. Daves price was fair and comparable to other quotes we received. I recommend JBL to anyone looking for quality work, at an affordable price and completed in a timely fashion.

The job went well. It was more involved since the paneling was glued to the walls and required extensive spackling. The workers did clean up; however the spackling dust was very invasive. It required a big cleanup in surrounding rooms.

I highly recommend JBL Home Improvements, Inc. as a company who responds quickly with appointments for job estimates and dates to do the work and as a company who does an excellent job. Dave Kaplan of JBL quickly returned my initial call and set an appointment for an estimate within a few days (July 19, 2012). He was friendly, courteous, professional and punctual. He provided a contract for my review in addition to a six page itemized list of references which included type of job performed and contact info for each. He scheduled the work for a week and a half later (July 31, 2012). He arrived on time with an assistant and completed the job in approximately 4 hours. They cleaned up everything before they left. My closet doors are beautiful. They did a great job and I am completely satisified. The price was reasonable (and well worth it) and the work was excellent. I definitely intend to use them again for future work.
Description of Work: JBL Home Improvements did an excellent job installing solid core bi-fold mirrored closet doors and adding new casement around the doors. I highly recommend them and would definitely use them again.
Dave was great - responsive and competent. It couldn't have gone better. Dave came immediately to for the estimate and responded quickly in writing. He came across as competent from the start. He started the job on time and was reliable from start to finish. Two repairs were quoted on a T&M basis, and he performed those at a very reasonable cost. I have other jobs coming up and will definitely use JBL.
Description of Work: General repairs to prepare the house for exterior painting. Carpentry, sheetrock. Troubleshooting of a roof leak. Roofing and electrical were performed by subcontractors.

From start to finish, Dave & his team were great to work with. All questions were answered, and any concerns were immediately addressed once work was started. We are very please with the work they did, and have already recommended them to friends & family.
the company was extremely professional - their quote was the best in terms of detail and was prompt in coming back to us - but they were so, so, so expensive that we passed - to put it in context, their quote was in the 80s and we went with a highly rated contractor on this list for the 40s for the exact same piece of work - just too expensive!!
