In providing the estimate, Tom was not there to sell, but to evaluate the job and quote the work needed. He was very patient in answering questions, although I found that I need to ask the right questions; he did not offer the detailed information that I was looking for without my asking. Based on the reasonableness of his estimate, along with his explanation of why his estimate was at the amount he gave (work detail, materials, etc,), we decided to go with him.He estimated a date 4 weeks out to start the work, and in 3 and a half weeks, he called to confirm when he was coming out. He arrived each day when he said he was going to, and left each day with the work site in good shape. Tom would also call with updates in the evening, if something had changed slightly in the job or schedule. As to be expected in a tear-out and replace job, Tom discovered that the original porch was poured on plywood, rather than a stone foundation. Since doing the job right would require additional material, Tom contacted us to request a very small incremental amount to cover additional materials and labor, before the work was done. We agreed with his proposal, and the job proceeded without delay. The job was completed on time, with minimal disruption and the result looks very good, and compatible with the masonry that had not been replaced. We believe we got a very fair value for the work performed, and would hire Tom again.
Description of Work: Our house needed one-half of the front porch and half of the front sidewalk replaced. The previous homeowner had replaced half of the porch and half of the sidewalk. The older part of the front porch had a couple of major cracks; while the sidewalk was in good shape, the concrete was much older than the newer sidewalk, and had a different finish. We decided to have both of the old segments replaced. The work involved removing the old concrete, establishing a good foundation for the new concrete, and installing the new material to match the masonry that was not being replaced. We got four estimates which were all over the map - the highest was more than twice what we paid Tom. Given that there were some unknowns for the estimators, like the condition of the foundation block once the old concrete was removed, we needed to get detailed descriptions of how the work was to be done and what the estimate included, to be able to fairly evaluate the estimates.
