We thought the bricks in the walkway would need to be replaced. Ron was able to observe the bricks and suggested that we repoint instead, saving us a bunch of money. For the steps, Ron had a plan from the beginning and executed the work with great attention to detail. He was responsive via text message throughout the project. At two points during the project Ron identified some additional work that would need to be done due to unforeseen issues, and he was very up-front, fair and professional about communicating the additional cost. He is a very skilled mason and the new steps look great. Many of our neighbors have asked for his contact information so he may be busy for a while!
Description of Work: Repoint brick walkway, tear out existing steps and replace with brick risers and concrete treads.

They didn't do the work because I felt that they wanted too much money. I felt like he was making too big a deal of it, I don't think he knew what he was doing. I used somebody else and I was very satisfied. The cost was $6500 and the other contractor I got charged about a quarter of that. When I met the guy, it didn't sit well with me. He showed up and so I would give him a B for responsiveness. He showed up on time and so I gave him an A for punctuality. I didn't personally use him because it seemed to me like he was charging too much. It seemed like he was making a bigger deal of the whole thing than it actually was. It was just my gut feeling, I don't know anything about masonry work. I got his name from Angie's List.
Description of Work: I did speak with them about putting in some steps in front of my house.

I gave Mr [Member Name Removed] a complete and thought out estimate included all of his needs for a large handicap ramp leading to his front door there were many phases of construction involved and the prices for each phase were competitive not all contractors use the same pricing for bidding on work

My first time using Angie' list. Mr. Shapiro came over quickly to discuss the work needed but after that his follow up was essentially non-existent. I had to repeatedly call him to get a verbal estimate and the promised written contract never arrived. I spoke to him on numerous occasions over the next 6 weeks, each time he promised that he would begin work shortly but never showed up and never, not once did he contact me. Don't waste your time like I did mine.

Mr [Member Name Removed] I'm sorry I missed the window of opportunity the weather had us guessing and we ran out of time for the end of the season As you said we spoke on numerous occasions about starting and we where closing projects as fast as we could to get over to your house before it was to cold I'm sorry we didn't get to your project before the season ended I would be happy to honor the pricing we gave you for your project in the spring of 2017

It went well, but it took longer than expected. The weather and other work delayed completion beyond the initial expected date. The floor has a four-way pitch to an ACO drain down the center. this came out very well and the floor drains perfectly. He addressed several issues that the architect didn't, and it improved the finished job and it is a higher quality than it could have been. It was enjoyable working with Ron and his crew when I could.

Ron completed the job within two weeks of commissioning him for the job. He worked steadily all day, came up with an attractive cement cap for the piers that echoed the appearance of our front stoop, and was meticulous about the project. We were very pleased with the quality of his work.
Description of Work: We needed two brick piers supporting columns in the front of our house to be capped to create a finished look. An earlier landscape contractor had never completed the piers.

He thought he would be able to do the job the second week of June. June was very rainy so he called me the last week of June to say he was behind and we were the next job. He thought he would be able to do our job in approx 2 weeks. Mid July we still hadn't heard from him. I text him to get an update and he said he could do it the next week. We were going on vacation that week (third week of July) so I asked if he could come the last week of July and he said yes. I text him the last week of July and he said he would be starting the job at the end of the week. Still no Ron. Second week of August I text him to say that if he was not able to do our job in the next week we would be looking for someone else to do the job. He promised he would be starting at the end of the week. He called Saturday morning (8/8) to ask if he could come over this morning (8/9) to go over the job. He called 45 minutes before he was supposed to be here to say he couldn't come. Something had come up. I told him not to bother. In my opinion Ron has very poor time managment skills and absolutely no regard for anyone else's time.

Ron and his apprentice worked nearly every weekday, weather permitting and finished the job in the agreed upon time. Ron doesn't hurry or cut any corners leaves enough time for the concrete to cure before starting the next step. They left the worksite clean and neat before leaving every day. This was a relatively small job but both workers were very professional and paid attention to details. Bottom line: I'm very pleased with the work and the price was fair. I will use them again if needed.
Description of Work: Removed concrete slab and brick steps serving as front porch. Rebuilt porch and steps with concrete and brick. Also removed and rebuilt a brick planter covering nearly one half of the front of the home. The appearance of the front entrance to my home was greatly improved.

Ron was great. His estimate and terms were thorough and understandable. We walked through the details of the project together. He managed all the details, timing, and work exactly as he specified. He even came back to the house one evening to respond to a question we had about the rain from a storm affecting the bonding agent. We couldn't have been pleased with the work or the experience.
Description of Work: Poured the floor in our newly contructed garage. The new building went up on the foundation of the old garage, so the concrete work involved bonding to the existing slab.

I had a non experience with another mason so I called this company for an estimate. He did come over and spent some time with the work that I needed including a quote for additional work. Everything went well but guess what.I NEVER heard form him again after a promised date for estimate. I tried calling and left a message but never heard back.My opinion, even for those that are highly rated, is that any of them is a crap shoot.Maybe I'll try another so called"A" rated mason until I run out. Good luck to any of you dealing with this trade.

wall was Work performed by Ron Shapiro. He was up to the mark and provided alternatives when the coal chute turned out to be totally rusted. I would strongly recommend him.
Description of Work: An old coal chute was boarded up and could result in potential flooding during heavy rains. Ideally i wanted to retain the old chute and fill the boarded hole with stucco just like rest of the wall. After opening the boarded up part it was revealed that the coal chute had really rusted out and could not be salvaged. The coal chute was removed altogether and the wall was made just like the rest of the house which involved using bricks and stucco on the exterior.

Quality of work was excellent. However, the job took several weeks longer than expected (one week was lost due to necessary dump truck repair), and the total cost was much higher than expected (due partially to higher than expected costs for gravel and concrete) -- original estimate was just over $4000.
Description of Work: Installed a concrete slab foundation for a new detached garage. This involved excavation (including removal of many tree roots), forming the perimeter of the pour site, spreading gravel in the excavation, installing rebar, pouring and tooling the slab, cleanup after the pour, and insatlling a concrete apron.

Ron Shapiro came to the house for an estimate and had some great suggestions as to pitch changes and design to improve the look and safety of the steps and porch. Once work began they worked diligently through completion.
Description of Work: Two man team removed old concrete front porch and walkway, designed and poured a new one. The removal phase was a monster job! The job estimate was honored and their attention to detail transformed the curb appeal of our home, we highly recommend Ron Shapiro!

For the driveway itself, it went great. We are very happy with the concrete driveway.
Description of Work: Excellent work installing a brand new driveway in concrete. On the plus side, the driveway work was professional, very well done by the owner and his full time employee. We sealed it last year, and will again this year. No cracks have appeared. However, we had a unique problem with the small sidewalk from the driveway to the front sidewalk, hard to fix due to the rigid concrete. We talked it over with him, and he agreed it was probably be best to use small masonry blocks, and also he would do the work. He approved the blocks we picked out at a garden center, and that's the last we heard from him, despite numerous phone messages left at his business number. The last time we called, we asked him to just let us know one way or another, but no return call was ever received.

i also was extremely happy with how the concrete driveway we placed and finished came out it was a perfect job . your existing walkway which were pavers was a job that your landscaper was supposed to fix for you it was a walkway transition we did spend several hours working on that walkway for you and it was completed to the best of our ability. i did agree to try and help you on my own and we met at a landscaping supply yard to pick up some material which you took with you in your car. after that meeting we went our seperate ways . the pavers would be laid at a later time. after that i honestly lost track of this . very sorry for that

it went so very well! When they showed up, they worked non stop for a full day so that we were never without windows overnight (important in my neighborhood). They left everything cleaner then when they arrived. Very professional and beautiful final product. I can't recommend them enough.
Description of Work: We had Shapiro Masonery replace 4 of our original (100 year old) basement windows with glass block windows. They did an AMAZING job! We considered doing it ourselves (as 1 was replaced with glass block by the previous owner) but we are so happy we hired Shapiro to do the job for us. The windows they installed are beautiful! level, clean, neat, which is no easy fete considering the walls in the basement are 2" stones. They included vents and even suggested a cheaper window in the one area because it went below ground level and the glass block would be covered with dirt. So they installed cinder block under and the glass block over. they are gorgeous! I am thrilled and plan to use them again for our front walk and steps.

Our garage floor was cracked and badly pitted from salt corrosion, and about half the foundation blocks were falling apart. I got estimates from five contractors for fixing the garage. Shapiro's quote was the highest, but he was also by far the most knowledgable and professional. He was the only one I felt confident understood what had to be done to fix the garage once and for all. The job started when promised, finished when promised, and went with no hitches. The new floor and foundation blocks look great. I'm thoroughly pleased!
Description of Work: Garage work: remove cracked and pitted concrete floor and apron, replace deteriorated foundation blocks, parge coat interior and exterior foundation blocks, pour new concrete floor and apron, apply acrylic floor sealer.
