The crew showed up on time confirmed the work they were to do and then worked steadily through out the day. The shelving was completed in one day and is exactly as Marty had explained. The workers were courteous and cleaned up after themselves. I was favorably impressed with all aspects of the job from quote to finished product. The shelves give me plenty of storage and will never cave under weight! I am very pleased.
Description of Work: Shelving for storage was installed along one wall of the basement. Before they could do that, they had to remove old insulation, put up plastic then frame the area before they could insulate properly. Plywood was added over the insulation and then the shelving was built.

Very professional workers. Cleaned up nicely after they were done. Marty Hill, the owner, is very polite and explained everything they were going to do. They sub-contracted the gutter work but those workers did a good job. The estimate he gave me was in the middle of the three I got. I would definitely recommended A Best
Description of Work: Partial tear off of 25 year old roof. Installed 50 year shingles, new gutters, new soffit vents, new outdoor lighting, fixed chimney, added roof vents. They even painted the vents and the pipes in the roof to match the shingles.

I chose A Best construction to replace my roof, not on price, but because Marty was the only contractor I interviewed who knew how to properly solve my unique ventilation issues. Other contractors offered inferior solutions for the required venting and they did not have as much experience in this area as Marty does. This was very important to me. Approximately two weeks and two phone calls after giving me a verbal estimate, I still had not received the written estimate that Marty promised. I was about to go with another contractor when Marty finally called me to apologize. He remained responsive afterward and made sure that my several questions and concerns about the details of the work were addressed. Marty called me a couple days before the work started to tell me how the work flow would go. The crew showed up on time and started tearing off the front portion of the roof . This was exactly opposite of what Marty told me! This mattered because I had to scramble to lay down more tarps in the attic to catch the falling debris. Communication problems between Marty, Paul the foreman, and the crew about the scope of the work were evident from the start. I felt like I had to babysit the whole process. The crew seemed annoyed with every deviation that I noticed and viewed them as distractions. They seemed like they just wanted to get the job done quickly and attention to detail suffered as a result At one point during the tear-off process, some decorative molding came loose on the side of the house. Instead of nailing it back correctly, the worker just took his roofing nail gun to it, obliterating the molding. After I complained, and after some deliberation, Marty made sure it got fixed with a new piece. But I was still the one who had to climb up on the roof to sand, prime, and paint the thing. The crew showed up early every day. Paul, the foreman was there the whole time to supervise. Marty stopped by to see how things were going. Marty also called me every day to give me updates. They did a thorough job of cleaning up all of the debris that accumulated. After the roof was completed (and before Marty had a chance to inspect the job for himself) I found a handful of damaged roofing shingles. Some were cut, some were torn and one even had a hole clean through its first layer. From within my attic space I noticed that they did not bother to cover up the gable vents (as required when installing a ridge vent) and I also found a 1.5" - 2.0" gap in the sheathing where a valley forms. This gap was just covered up with roofing material as if the gap didn't even exist. A roofing expert confirmed that while this was not critical, it was just plain sloppy workmanship and that ?fixing it would be a major problem for your contractor?. The second part of the job was to replace two gutters on the rear of the house. A Best subcontracts this work to another company. That point was not conveyed to me until contract-signing time, but that's no big deal. It took three weeks longer than I expected for the gutters to be installed . The owner of the gutter company is not very diplomatic, but he did a very good job. For all of the problems that I found, Marty tried to make things right. The only thing I feel stuck with is the large gap in the valley that I found. Marty offered to fix that to make me happy, but repairing it was impractical and would provide little if any benefit. Marty was apologetic and saw to it that each issue I found was fixed in a timely manner. He took complete ownership of every issue and gave me a slight break in price. But I expected better workmanship, more internal communication and more attention to detail.
Description of Work: Roof replacement (complete tear-off with new sheathing). New rear gutters.

He was scheduled to come 8-1-09, but never showed. I have since called weekly, but have never gotten any further than his secretary. I would often just get an answering machine. He has made no effort to contact me. I have no other choice than to look for a new roofer. I see that there were 2 other people on Angie's List who rated him poorly for not responding, so it appears that I am not the only one that he has done this too. Because I signed a contract, I have to give him 10 business days before I can get a new company to do the job. I am very disappointed because he seemed to be the most competent of the companies that I contacted.
Description of Work: We have a shingle roof, and a flat roof above the family room. I got a proposal from him to repair two leaks in my roof, replace the skylight, and replace the entire flat roof. He was also going to check the ventilation and insulation, with possible replacement.

They were here when they said they would be. They warned me it would be quite a mess. My neighbor had a kiddie pool and they covered it with a tarp. They cleaned out the bushes, but all around the house the gunk accumulated on the tops of the windows, lights and window frames. I had to hire somebody to clean that out because I couldn't do it myself. It probably was not something they would think about cleaning. I plan to use them again.
Description of Work: I used A Best Construction to replace my roof. I have an old house and there were three layers of roofing. The bottom one was the original wood shingles, so there was a lot of work to do. This was just the 2-story part of my house that they did. I didn't have them do the 1-story part.

Overall, I am very satisfied with my experience with A Best Construction. After setting up an appointment to get an estimate for the job, Marty, who is the owner of the company, showed up at my house to take some measurements and give me an estimate. He was very detailed on telling me the kind of work he was going to do, and the materials he would use. As for the actual job, the crew showed up early, they were not messy at their job, and left the lawn free of any nails or debris . It took them aprox 3 days to finish the job due to weather conditions. However they secured and cover all areas that were incomplete before they left for the day. After completing the job, Marty came back to my house to personally inspect the job and to see if I was happy with the job.

His crew did a good job. The open vent had to be fixed because water was coming inside the house and it was wide open. They covered the vent and charged me $50. In case they hadn?t alerted me regarding the open vent, I probably would?ve had some water damage. The guy from A Best Construction was very knowledgeable. When he came out to my house for the roofing job, he stayed for more than an hour, explaining every aspect of the job. He was very professional and trustworthy. Whenever, I called him, he always made sure that he called me back. Even though the job wasn?t scheduled, his crew was on time. I?d consider using A Best Construction again in the future.

From the start things went very well. Marty, the owner of A Best, showed up a bit early for the initial appointment for the bid. He was very respectful and enthusiastic about the job. That being said, he did not try to oversell. He listened and offered options. He spoke with very high regard for his crew. I can see why. Everything went as Marty described it during the bid interview. His crew chief called to tell us when the work would start. Materials arrived on time. The crew was courteous and professional. They were quick and the worksite was clean at the end of each day. The roof looks terrific. I will use A Best for future jobs and will recommend them to others.
Description of Work: A Best performed a complete tear-off on my roof. They replaced the frayed shingles with new 30 year shingles. They also re-flashed at the chimney. Clean up was excellent. No debris was found in my yard or in the neighbor's yard. They even clean most of the debris out of my attic!

My experience with my ABest professionals couldn't have been better. I've already started a second contract with ABest to improve the outside of my home with new windows, porch updates, and permanent trim and soffits. I am extremely impressed by my foreman,Nick Abbott. He was able to plan every detail ahead of time and manage his labor resources, time, and materials wisely. Each day his crew left my home cleaner than when they started. I greatly appreciated being included at the beginning of each work day with the foreman's daily task plan and expectations, and then be able to discuss outcomes before he left each day. Excellent communication really helped to lead to excellent results. I would highly recommend my crew to accomplish any size job you would want to undertake. They possess both the trade and organizational skills to make your dreams happen.
Description of Work: They removed an old patio door at the back of the kitchen and built a brand new half bath with a pocket door by my new back entrance. The foreman did a miraculous job, painting my plain, 50 year-old custom cabinets and adding a Shaker style moulding. They changed all the hardware to brushed nickel, added a new countertop, ceramic backsplash, sink, faucet, and added crown moulding throughout the kitchen area. My newly purchased appliances were installed, and my new kitchen looked like a brand new custom design project for triple the cost. Painting and drywall was very professional, accomplished after all the proper skim coats and sandings. The electrical and plumbing work "far surpassed" building codes, according to final inspectors. A second floor full bath was completely gutted and rebuilt with a very custom feel. The window over the tub was replaced with custom glassblock and angled walls were finished flush with 12 inch tumbled look porcelain tile. A beautiful tile shelf was built around two sides of the tub. All the hardware was done in brushed nickle. A Eurovanity was installed under a whisper-quiet fan/light and a brushed stainless steel medicine cabinet, mirrored inside and out.

The job was started on schedule, and completed quickly with a hard working, courteous, large crew (8); less than three days, start to finish. I can not say enough good things about the quality of their workmanship and skilled craftsmen. After interviewing a half dozen contractors to put a new roof on my house, A Best Construction, Inc. was the only company the rated a near perfect A rating on Angie's list with twenty reports filed and has a clean record with the Better Contractor's Bureau or the Better Business Bureau. From start to finish, A Best Construction protected my house and property from damage and before leaving, ensured everything was spotless. They even weeded my garden and swept my patio in their efforts to leave the job site s***-n-span. They really went above and beyond their responsibility in cleaning up my yard after each day they worked on my roof. No nails in the grass. No litter in the yard. And with a few minutes of completing the job, the roll-off used to haul away the old roofing materials was picked up and hauled away and my driveway swept. I'm sure my new roof will weather many storms over its life and I can sleep tight knowing I'm well covered when the winds are blowing and the rain is falling. Thanks for a job well done.

Marty Hill is a charmer, but also a sincere and dedicated individual who has his customers' satisfaction as his number one priority. There are no salesmen - Marty, the owner, makes the sales call, which saves the customer money. His quote was very fair, and the Angies List discount was cheerfully applied. The initial price quote was increased due to the (contracted) plywood replacements, all spelled out. The roof was a tearoff. The job was complicated because the Pittsford house was rented. The workmen did everything possible to avoid any problems with the plantings, and the only problem with a broken handle on a cooker was quickly resolved. Very satisfied, and I have confidence to use Marty for any future work. Have recommended him to a friend.

Once the project was started (delayed because of so much rain this year) it went very smoothly. The workers did excellent work and took great care of my landscaping. It was finished in 2 days, as expected.
Description of Work: Complete tearoff of roofing, replaced damaged plywwood, replaced box vents with a new ridge vent and installed architectural roof tiles. Professionally finished around the exhaust vent, looks much better than before. They also cleaned my gutters which were full of debris from all the large trees near the house. That was a nice treat.

A Best was one of 11 contractors I contacted for a quote on this job. They rose to the top of that list quickly, based on quality of workmanship, references, fair pricing, and a history of work well done, documented by the Better Business Bureau, Angie's List and other similar sites. From my interview with them, I was greatly impressed by their respectful, professional demeanor, and willingness to share detailed information with me about materials, process, etc. I had already interviewed 8 of the 11 contractors when I contacted A Best, so I had a lot of information to process. I appreciated that I was able to ask them questions about competing opinions from the various contractors, and they appeared to have responses that were informed by experience and good sense (and less out of a desire to make more money). They were my top choice for a roofing contractor and the only reason I was not able to use them was that, even with some negotiation, they remained slightly out of my budget. I will definitely recommend them to family and friends in the future, and hope to some day use them for some interior projects.

A-Best did a terrific job. Marty inspected our roof and took several digital photos which he showed to us while explaining the project and providing the estimate. He had a full array of shingle samples in a variety of colors and explained their various properties and costs and helped us make a reasonable choice. His estimate included numerous details that cheaper services omitted--this job cost $11,000 and we had other estimates that went as low as $7,000, but these 'low ball' bids didn't include any discussion of water barriers or flashing. The job was quoted as taking 7 working days, and that's exactly what it took--allowing for the frequent rain delays that couldn't be helped! Each day we got a call from the foreman telling us what was going on: they cleaned the yard every night and you would never know from looking at the ground that they had been working all day--they also put plywood and tarps over the shrubs to protect them from falling debris. The crew was courteous and they always showed up right at 0800 to begin the job. The roof looks terrific, and we are very happy with their work. If A-Best is too busy, I would also recc'd Mr. Fussy Roofing--they also gave us a detailed estimate with digital photos in a written proposal that was competitive with A-Best. We went with A-Best because they gave us a break on another home improvement project we will be starting next.

We were very impressed with Marty's presentation of our quote and his company. He was the one roofing contractor that took digital photos of our problem spots. He really had conviction about his company and his employees. He definately seperated himself from the competition and was priced in the middle of the other four contractors that gave us quotes. We picked him from using Angie's List and his positive ranking -- EVEN though the other four contractors were WORD OF MOUTH referrals.

We started by getting several estimates from local contractors. A Best Construction (owner Marty Hill) came to give one of the estimates. Marty was very pleasant to work with. He was very willing to listen and spend the time needed to assure he would answer all our concerns. After reviewing all the estimates, we decided to go with A Best Construction. We called and spoke to Marty and he scheduled an approximate time for the work to start. Several days before they actually started, Marty called to check if we would be OK with them starting at that time. The crew showed up on time that morning. They had a dumpster for collecting the waste and small trailer with all their supplies. The crew covered the bushes with tarps around the section on the roof that would get the tear off. They were very professional and did an excellent job. They even painted the pipe boots to match the color of the roof. The total job took 1-1/2 days.
Description of Work: The existing roof was in need of replacement. The service performed was replacing a smaller section of the roof and reroofing for the remaining portion. Also, to install new box vents, boots, and drip edges.

The job was better than we expected. Starting with Marty (the owner/president of the company), we were met with a professional experience from beginning to end. He set expectations that were almost virtually accurate, from billing, to timeliness, to worksite, to the courteousness of his employees. Nick the lead foreman was also outstanding - very friendly and communicative, and also did (most importantly) very high quality work. They are somewhat of perfectionist, which is excellent. The job was never interrupted for any reason and it was finished 3 weeks later on the nose. We rated the pricing a "B" solely because Marty/A-Best were the most expensive of the 3 quotes we received. However, I do believe it's reflective in the work they did. We received a quote for the same job that was considerably less but in the end I believe you get what you pay for, and these guys more than delivered. We are already looking to have them do 2 more major jobs. Awesome!!!
Description of Work: We had an area of our basement that was unfinished. In total, the area was an L-shaped 305 square foot portion of the basement. The work required hanging of drywall, duct work, electrical, hung ceiling, carpeting, painting, custom-built in shelving in one section, lighting, painting and carpeting.
