The job initially was to install a curb-side cut out valve for our sprinkler system. Balkin located the spot in the sidewalk where the valve was supposed to be; but no valve was there.....and to complicate matters, the water service line to our sprinkler system had to be replaced because it wasn't the correct size. 70' feet of pipe. So Balkin stopped the curb-side cut off valve project, resurfaced the ground they dug up and submitted a new proposal to replace the water service line. We sought bids from other sewer and water main plumbers but Balkin came in with the lowest bid. Note: There aren't many plumbers in New York City that do this kind of sewer and water main work. Balkin estimated the project would take 2 days. Due to weather conditions, they needed 4 days. We only had one part of a day of water service disruption throughout the project. They were very careful not to tear up too much of our front patio blue stone to get to the old pipe. They installed 70' feet of new copper water pipe, a new curb-side cut off valve and a new sprinkler system shut off valve in our cellar. They were even nice enough to remove some old pipes we had left over from an earlier plumbing job. As with all major contractor jobs, Balkin required a 50% deposit before the project starts; and then the balance of the fee upon completion. Balkin's price saved us about $2,100.00 dollars from the next lowest bid. Would I use them again? Sure.

Although we had a few episodes of sewage backing up into the basement before Homeserve USA would agree to pay for the camera inspection, once that happened, we were approved to have Balken do the Jetting procedure to get out the built up grease. Problem solved! As for the strange price i put down, the reason i did this is because i pay Homeserve USA about 20 dollars a month for sewer insurance and Balken was called in by Homeserve USA. I was very impressed that Homeserve USA worked with such a fine reputable company such as Balken (based on past Angie's reviews).

George was super friendly , professional, knowledgeable, patient, and a good guy, he is the type of guy that you have confidence to refer to your friends to. George was very detail oriented , walked through every step with you as he went on and gave pointers and tips on how you can do it yourself next time around, superior services and learning experience throughout the whole process, 5 hours was tiring but also rewarding in terms of getting rid of problem and gaining knowledge, money well spent!

Just FYI, NOT a full plumbing service. It would be good to know that before I spent the time trying to contact them.

Excellent service, I called Balkan at 6pm after finding my basement bath tub drain extremly backed up. George responded a few hours later and provided excellent customer service and cleared my line in less than an hour. George was very friendly and gave a lot of insight on the issue and how the houses drain line work. The price was quoted before any work started. The quote was very reasonable and there was no "emergency" or "after hour" fee. Great serve at a great value, I would highly recommend and use again.

We are very pleased with the service we received and would highly recommend this company. Our sewer was clogged by tree roots and was backed up. They answered the phone; they called me back right away; their tech kept us informed of his progress on another job he was working on; after he finished that job he came to our house, did an excellent job, was a great guy, very thorough, professional. The work was great, and the price very fair.

Perry from Balkan did a fantastic job cleaning out my muddy sewer line. First visit, Perry came out to my house on a Sunday, and diagnosed my problem. Initially i thought maybe my sewer pipe was partially broken, but he spent some time diagnosing the problem and was confident that all I had was a bad clog, and a strange sump pump arrangement. He scheduled a follow up visit to inspect my pipe with a video camera, and then also cleaned out my sewer pipe. Throughout the process, Perry was honest and a true professional. He did a thorough job, and kept me informed of what was going on. A+ work here.

They came out, repaired the issue promptly, and I was very happy with them. And the sewer inspection ended up turning out really great, as well, and it brought me peace of mind.

During excavation of a broken house trap in our newly purchased home, our plumber discovered a lead water main. Given its approximate alignment with the water meter, we assumed this was the active main for the house. Plumber said that we needed to call a water main company to investigate further and replace if necessary. We called two companies that do this work in New York. Both of them took a look at the lead pipe and handed us estimates for $4,000 + to replace. Then we called Balkan. Frank came out, looked at the pipe, and noticed a large crimp in it. He looked at the meter and saw that the pipe leading to it above ground was copper. Something didn't add up. He had me turn the water on at the utility sink, got down into the pit, and put his ear against the lead pipe. He heard nothing, and opined that this was an old main and that the previous owner must have put a newer copper main in at some time. We reported such to our plumber, who then put a pinhole into the lead main to confirm, and sure enough, it was dry. So, moral of the story: two competitors were eager to take our money; Balkan exercised diligence, saving us a completely unnecessary and costly water main replacement. Should we ever actually need water or sewer main work, Balkan is the first company we are calling. Hats off to Balkan and Frank, who went above and beyond.

The crew were extremely professional. Pretty much everything that can go wrong with a job went wrong. We have an uncooperative nasty neighbor across the street who's water pipe broke during excavation and Balkan handled it very well. I know I was stressed out because of everything that was going on, and because of it I had requests that were in retrospect unreasonable, but they always very politely compiled with all of them. Because of said broken pipe everything was delayed and due to an un functional sewer we were forced out of the house, so when they could continue they stayed late one day to give us sewer back! They didn't have to do it, but they did. In the end everything was finished close to on time despite all the unexpected problems. We are very happy with the outcome and with the process. The kind of jobs they do are mostly once in a lifetime, so we likely won't need them again, but if we did I would use them without hesitation - they were great!

Very professional company and easy to communicate with. From the beginning when owner came to give me estimate on job through the end, it was a very smooth process. Crew that came to do job were very polite and kept me inform of what they were doing and when they were done cleaned my property and asked me to check my water pressure throughout house. No more low water pressure problem. Very happy with company and would definitely recommend them and use them again in future for other plumbing problems.

Balkan did the job in 3 days. I picked them because I know they are the largest Sewer And Water Main company in New York city, also because their price was the best among the several companies I called. Overall the service is good. But I have minor complaints regarding some details of their job. One example is that when they tried to connect the pipes, one worker put some kind of paste in the pipe at the end, another worker who was drilling through the wall put dirt into the pipe so the dirt and the paste were mixed, things like that. In general I would use them again in the future.

It was an emergency as our sewer pipe was blocked by the tree roots growing inside our old clay pipe. Our regular plumber recommended Balkan. The estimator came the very next day (Saturday) to examine our situation. We agreed on the spot on the price and the work was going to be scheduled ASAP, which he estimated to be Wednesday. True to their word, as soon as they pulled the necessary permits they started the work on Wednesday. The crew was professional and prompt daily arriving at 8am and working very effeciently. The total job was estimated to be done in 3 days and it was. We had a "worst case" scenario - our main sewer pipe line was running right underneath our ornamental brick paved front porch and steps and next to 2 large city trees so it meant Balkan could not use any machinery and had to dig by hand. They also had to arrange for the arborist to be present on site as per the NYC rules that protect the trees and any work involved with their work in this case. However, dispite all these complexities they stayed on time and we now have a brand new metal main sewer line and brand new trap in the basement. They worked through sun and rain and we are fully satisfied with their service.

The estimate was handled extremely well. I did not go with Balkan because I chose a smaller outfit, which turned out to be a huge mistake. The company that did the job was awful from start to finish. If I had it to do over, I would pick Balkan. They have done numerous water and sewer main jobs around the neighborhood. They also had the most reasonable price, not cheap, but reasonable.

The estimator showed up on time and gave me the lowest bid among 4 vendors. Since they have a pretty good rating on the Angie's list, I used them. They worked at the time they promised and complete the job as they promised. I will use them again.

I called Balkan on Jan. 1, a holiday, and asked if they could give me an estimate early the next morning so I could get to work. (I was hoping not to get at call at 9 AM saying no one could come till after lunch.) The next day, Frank Marte called me at 6:30 AM and said he could arrive by 7. I staggered out of bed, dressed and made coffee, and there he was. He looked at the split basement drainpipe and said he could replace it, but he'd have to charge me too much, since my problem was probably still all in pipes inside the house and he's an "outdoor plumber." He suggested two "indoor plumbers" who work in the neighborhood (both of whom have good reviews on Angie's List) and made a rough guess about how much they should charge. I thanked him for his honesty and he left. I'm still waiting for another company I called for an estimate to call back.

They came, they worked they left. It was done immediately and really well and when we complained that the cement was messed up because the cone they left fell in it, they fixed that as well.

We had had a partial installation of a new Sewer line in 2007 by another company. A fir tree pr3evented the entire line from being replaced at that time. We had to have the line snaked 4 times in the past year so we removed the tree and hired Balkan due to their reputation and lower price. While we had some difficulty in communicating in the beginning, we were able to have the work done once we had decided on the contract very quickly. The quality of the work seemed great, the workers were excellent and the company was immediately responsive to our needs for replacement of some concrete sidewalk and cleanup after the installation . The attitude of the supervisors, workers and staff at Balkan was very customer focused and the workers worked well together with a great spirit of cooperation. I would not hesitate to recommend them highly to others.

A large hole appeared in my front yard, near the curb. DEP came and inspected. I was informed that I had 30 days to have a new sewer line installed. Contacted Balkan and another company. Balkan came , examined the sewer line and gave me an estimate. I had researched it and i was o.k with the price but wanted another opinion. I contacted another company who was "in the neighborhood". Someone came by and they gave me a price $3000 more. I asked to see their proposal to compare with Balkan's. It was a no brainer and I chose Balkan. They showed up earlier than stated and it was a rainy day. They dug up my yard and had to break some of the sidewalk. They worked in the rain all day and replaced my sewer pipe from the house to the sidewalk. At the end of the day they placed the "mud" back in my yard and placed a temporary side walk made of wood. They informed me that I could use the water in the house and that they would come back tomorrow to dig up the street and extend the pipe to the main sewer. Today that work is being done. So far I am very pleased with how they are handling this job.

After the DEP gave us the 3 day notice, they told us to call several street plumber firms. A Balkan estimator came out in less than an hour, even on Veteran's Day. His $3500 price for replacing the service main, new valve and repaving was about the same for all the other guys that saw my situation. What sold me on Balkan was that their site says they owned all the equipment so I figured no waiting around for subcontractors. Balkan as well as the other guys offered the ten year warranty. After I picked Balkan, they asked me to fax or email them the DEP paper while they emailed me the proposal to sign. They said work starts between 8 and 9am. The proposal also said if a special valve connecting to the city's main had to be replaced, the price would go up $300. Thankfully, mine didn't have to be replaced. The next morning, the workers showed up early but the equipment and some tolls were running a little behind but understandable with everyone being crazy busy after Hurricane Sandy. They dug up the street, replaced the line and refilled it. They worked fast. The next day they came back and finished repaving. Ahhhhh, running water again! I was then emailed a tax form to sign so I wouldn't have to pay sales tax on all the pipe, valves and stuff. When I checked the work, everything was good and clean but I realized that the trap for the water meter was installed right over the cap for our sewer line. Every now and then, our drain gets clogged and I use the snake to clear it. With the trap in that position, we wouldn't be able to insert the snake. I was tempted to get a wrench and move it myself but then I thought I'd better let a pro do it. I called Balkan and they quickly transferred me to the same plumber that installed it. I asked if he can move trap out of the way. He said it was an easy job and he would definitely come back to do it but didn't know when yet. The VP did email back to confirm the adjustment also. The week after Thanksgiving, the plumber called me back and offered several dates to let him inside. I'm glad he didn't just show up whenever he wanted like some utility or cable guys. We agreed to a date when someone would be home. The sewer cap and valve were in a pretty tight space, but he was able to rotate the trap just right so I can get access. Overall the process was smooth and they worked fast around my schedule. Again, their website was the most informative out of all other firms offering the same service so customers that do their research will know what to expect.
