The owner, Tom Smith, and his designer, arrived on time for our appointment. My home was built in 1875, and is very old-fashioned. The bathroom hadn't been redecorated in many years and needed a complete remodel. Smith stood there with his designer, looking at the old-fashioned exposed pipes and old wallpaper and actually snickered in disdain -- twice -- as if my home wasn't worthy of his services. I remarked to him that is probably wasn't a good idea to laugh at his cutomers' homes. (if my home was in great shape, I wouldn't have needed him!) I have a good sense of humor, but I also expect to be treated with courtesy. They measured the walls, made suggestions and promised to get back to me with proposal. It's a month later, and I haven't heard from them. I've had estimates from several other contractors, and they are very willing to do the job. I'm disappointed that Smith Plumbing, which has been in Port Jervis for years, would be so unprofessional. I'd heard from others that Tom could be rude -- but as a customer with good green US cash in my hand and a job that needed doing, I'm surprised -- especially in this economy -- to see such an attitude. I'll award the job to the contractor that gave me the best proposal -- and that means not only price, but a good plan, knowledge of local building codes and good attitude.
