I spent $900. The guy who did the estimation, Terry, was very professional and a great communicator. I've sent him email questions sand he would respond within an hour. The company has really nice people and I felt very confident using them. They're very good.

For several months I was trying to locate a company that would upgrade my panel box from a 60 amps to at least 150 amp; however I have some aluminum wiring in my home and many companies would not return my call. When I called Canal Town I spoke with Terry about my situation: I had lights dimming, sparks coming out of outlets, basically I was praying I wouldn't come home to a burnt down home. We set up a time for an estimate and Terry quickly spotted an immediate flaw in my panel box and explain the dangers of it. He did so in not a way to 'gain his business or scare me' but an educational explanation of what was going on. He proceeded to tell me what the company would do and gave a rough estimate a couple of days later. Upon receiving the estimate I was quite shocked at the cost. I called Terry and explained my concern about the estimate and frankly, I liked his response. Without getting into too much details, he basically explained they only hire Master Electricians that will/must meet code. That when they complete a job they can sleep soundly knowing any dangers are no more. I appreciated the truthfulness of his answer. He didn't try to lower the cost in efforts to 'get the job', he just said 'it is what it is, I have costs & labor, it is what it is'. Honestly, if a company started to fluctuate too much on their price I would question the integrity of their work. Anyway, I rec'd a call that they could start part of the job a week prior to what was planned and complete it the following week, I agreed. Terry & a couple men came out and we went over what the game plan was. Let me tell you that these men worked their butts off. Thank goodness I live in a ranch or I couldn't even imagine what they would have had to do to complete what I was asking. To me, simple things like a few more outlets in my kitchen, switching lights to a 3 & 4 way switches & adding switches was all I was asking. It did take all day to complete these requests...didn't even start on the upgrade. I now understand why they hire these master electricians, they know their stuff. By the end of that day, I was informed that there were code violations (unbeknownst to me) and they were easily able to correct them for me. The big day arrives when the electric is turned off & the change begins. What I will say is these guys are professional. The upgrade went well. They changed the old outlets & switches to the appropriate one for aluminum. I had as much furniture & such away from areas that would need to be checked, there was one piece of furniture that was very awkward & heavy & left untouched. The room where this piece of furniture was at was the only area I needed to speak up about to make sure they didn't leave it out. I believe it wouldn't have been checked if I didn't say anything. When the job was complete there were a few very minor things I noticed that was left undone. Simple things like some little trash left behind and an item that was moved wasn't put back. Overall, nothing really upsetting at all and Terry corrected what needed to be done. To summarize, I am please with the service I received and feel a lot safer sleeping at night. The men were professional, knowledgeable & personable. They are a bit more expensive than others but when it comes to electrical issues, I'd rather pay more for experience than the quick & dirty type companies.
Description of Work: Upgrade my 60 amp to 200 amp in my ranch home. Changed outlets & switches to appropriate ones for aluminium. Added additional switched and outlets I needed.

Good advice before the demolition started. We discussed all the things we wanted and Alan and Michael were very helpful in explaining the pluses and minuses of different approaches. Once we were ready for the rough in Michael and helper showed up on time and put in a solid couple of days of work. Our house was built in 1928 using the original sheetROCK. It was a long day to drill and cut the openings for the recessed lights, but they did not give up and the lights look great. I would say Canal Town Electric has great people with a lot of experience. They seem to try and do all the things that could be rushed by someone who did not take pride in their work. Very happy with the end result. We could have cut corners, but we love the new/old kitchen and everything works great.
Description of Work: Rewired Kitchen, installed ceiling lights, undercabinet lights, switches, dimmers, outlets. Also added a whole house surge protector as well as converting some old outlets to 3 prong grounded.

It went very well. I was pleased with their professionalism and I could tell the electrician really knew what he was doing and was very careful about himself, his worker, the quality of the project and getting the job done well. I appreciated his feedback and definitely believe this was a great needed repair / improvement and is a good investment for my house and resale value too.

Originally we had a 1 PM appointment, but got called around 9:30 saying they'd finished their earlier job much sooner than expected, and offered to come to the house much sooner, if that wouldn't be too inconvenient for us. We accepted. They were on the job site by 10 AM, and had a clear understanding of the scope of all three jobs within five minutes. We discussed things like aesthetics, and convenience for placing the new circuit, and then they got to work. The job with the blocked plug was straightforward, and easily done. The lighting troubleshooting and the circuit were both a bit more involved. In particular, both jobs required specialized hardware to be acquired from a retail source before they could be finished. However, since the contractor sent out a two-man team they found it simple enough to get most of the work done, then send one person out to pick up the parts while the second kept working - so that by the the first got back with the parts, it was a simple matter to install them, and finish up the job sites. All in all, they were done in just about two hours, having found the trouble with the lighting fixture, returned the one outlet to full utility, and having put in the line for a freezer to be plugged in, in the garage. Their work was clean, and very professional, and the workers were polite, as well as seemingly competent. The final price was well in line with what I had been quoted when I made the original appointment, and the Angie's List coupon was cheerfully accepted to discount the labor costs. I cannot think of anything more than they might have done for us to make the experience better. A very pleasant experience.

They were great. We knew more or less what we needed in the basement, and they found a very good cost-effective option for us. The home office was more of an issue--it's a long, narrow room with windows at one end. The room also does double-duty as a quilt studio so good lighting is critical. They helped us find the right lighting option and even brought over a test light for us to determine if it was the type and quality of light we'd be happy with. The install went quickly and smoothly, with a minimum of mess. And we're thrilled with our lights both upstairs and down!

It was good. I got a 10% discount from Angie’s List coupon. I have researched and got quotes from several companies over the phone and they were the same or cheaper than the other companies. But the prices were almost exactly the same for all of them. But with the coupon, it was a little cheaper. They’re a more local and small company. The owner and his assistant came out. I was very happy with their service.

I called Canal Town Electric on Monday, September 9, 2013 after I discovered some wiring failures while trying to replace damaged outlets in three upstairs bedrooms; two of the three bedrooms were affected by the problems. Despite a busy schedule, they were able to squeeze us in two days later, on the morning of Wednesday, September 11. Because of their tight timeframe and our need to have the work finished by noon that day on account of work commitments, two technicians came - Michael, the primary technician, and John, his apprentice - promptly at 8:25AM (they were scheduled to arrive at 8:30AM) and got right to work. Michael spent some time at the beginning of the job explaining the wiring malfunctions to me and laid out a plan of action and timeframe. Partway through the job, he called me back in to demonstrate the changes they'd made to one room (including fixing the split-circuit outlets, so all of the top plugs are on switches and the bottom plugs are always hot). Shortly thereafter, they found a problem unrelated to the original service call: at some point in the home's history, a set of three-way switches and a lighting receptacle in the hallway between the bedrooms had simply been covered up by blank plates on account of a wiring error. Because Michael and John finished our requested repairs with time to spare before heading to their next job, they also rewired and repaired the switches and receptacle, indicating that we can install a new hallway light at our leisure or set up another appointment for them to do it. They finished at about 11:45, for a total of three hours and change, taking me through all of the rooms at the end, just to demonstrate that the new wiring, switches, and plugs work. Michael then accepted our Angie's List coupon and explained all of the charges in detail, including per-hour rates for both of the technicians and cost of materials. There are other wiring issues in our home that we know we'll have to deal with later; we plan on using Canal Town Electric for those repairs.
Description of Work: Rewired switches and outlets in three bedrooms and a bathroom using some existing materials (i.e., pre-purchased switches, plugs, and plates) and providing new materials (i.e., plugs and wiring) where necessary.

Well, from the time I initially contacted Alan for an estimate he was punctual and professional and I could tell he was knowledgeable and knew what he was doing. He provided me with a quick and reasonable estimate and he was very flexible and easy to work with. If I had a preference for a particular part, he allowed me to use that part and he took his part out of the price. Alan was very easy to communicate with via email and all the details were worked out that way prior to the start of the job. His crew arrived on time and with the proper materials on-hand. They were experienced, professional, neat, and did a beautiful job all-around. I was concerned about cutting holes in my drywall ceiling but they were done perfectly and with no damage. The crew leader had lighting experience and was eager to share his recommendations about light placement. His decisions about where best to locate the lights were right on. They were able to symmetrically install the lights despite the challenge of working around the HVAC vents above the drop ceiling. The crew was done in less than a day and everything worked perfectly when they left.
Description of Work: Installed 16 recessed lights in a drop ceiling basement and in a drywall ceiling, along with 3-way switching for the lights.

It was great! By doing this work during the estimate, he saved our glass block window installation. We have used Canal Town before for a 100 amp to 200 amp panel upgrade and adding outlets, ceiling fans, and replacing/rewiring kitchen exhaust fans and will continue to use them in the future.
Description of Work: Terry came to our house to give us an estimate, but we had another contractor putting in a glass block window and a 220V line was in the way. Canal Town took the time to move 2 breakers on our panel so that the necessary 5 inches of slack could be found.

I wouldn't go with anyone else, never again. You can't get any higher on my list than them. We used them in 2009 and we're still using them. By the time we got completely done I would say it cost us at least $12000 for doing over 3000 square feet of home. They're professional. They come when they say they're going to. Their estimates are appropriate and fair. They come up with suggestions and then when they come and do the work they're efficient and clean. They stand out above the rest. I would give them an A plus if I could.

We just have a kind of ongoing relationship with them. We recently bought a house and the previous owner had done his wiring of the basement which was quite unsafe. The electricians at Canal Town Electric were immediately available to help us make the new house safer. They have consulted with us all along the way as they encountered unexpected problems and have really been good working with us. They gave us an estimate based on the initial assessment of what needed to be done and it was very reasonable. But they had had to do more things and they really tried to be cost conscious about the products and services that they were offering to us. They gave us choices based on our preference and our budget.

When the plumber installed a backup sump pump yesterday, he pointed out electrical sparks when he reconnected the house piping to the water main. I called Canal Town Electric this morning. He replaced the grounding wire around the water meter, tightened another loose grounding wire, and installed an exterior grounding rod. Problem solved!

I was quite impressed at knowledge, professionalism, efficiency in which both men worked. They showed up on time, reviewed work, explained what would be needed to complete what I had expressed I wanted done. One of the workers came with me to Lowes to purchase what I needed and explained the difference between the choice of fixtures advising me which would be better. He also showed me the difference in light bulbs advising why one would be better than another. After the fixtures were installed he explained and showed me how to change settings if needed. Then we reviewed the bill ,materials used, cost of labor and discount applied. I would call them back again if any additional work was needed.

The 2 electricians showed up right on time. While one of team members replaced the ceramic fixture in the basement (relatively easy), the other member checked up in the attic to make sure the wires were not burned beyond the fixture. He found that the only damage was in the fixture itself and was able to pull the wires through enough to cut off the damaged wire. He then installed the new light fixture. The new fixture All the work was completed in an hour. They cleaned up all debris when they were done.
