JB is an excellent contractor with whom to work, in every step of the way. Joe (the principal of the firm) had the knowledge to understand what needed to be done for this job - particularly the issue of the basement vaults - and provided a competitive quote. The execution was excellent. Knowing that the reconstruction of this sidewalk impacted two retail businesses, he carefully planned the logistics so that the whole job was done in 2.5 days, with minimal disruption. His people showed up on time, and Joe was accessible during the entire time. Any issues I raised were immediately addressed. Joe and his team were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Rip out and replace an existing 55 feet sidewalk and supporting steel deck, that was built over a basement vault, along a busy commercial street. The steel diamond-plate cellar door was also replaced.

JB did a brilliant job, rebuilding the stairs and adding treads to improve their maintenance. The work was done quickly (about a day for each stair case), prefessionally and result was fantastic. The stairs now look great, are stable/well pout tohgether and a sigbificant step forward in straightening the strairs. (The street line is slanted which makes this hard but they look a whole bunch better and more even now then they did before.) The bluestone that was used for the treads and the access way between the stairs not only looks good, it is also very appropriate to this landmarked neighborhood. I'd recommend JB withotu hesitation.
Description of Work: We had two stairs cases leading to the garden apartments in our building replaced. The old stair cases were crumbling and in very bad repair. The railing was shaky, at best. The stairs also lacked an aesthetic quality.

Joe JB was fantastic from start to finish in completing numerous jobs for our Coop. Joe himself was very accessible throughout the process, very responsive, responsible and caring for the work his guys were doing, easy to work with, and FAST. He went the extra mile a few different times without batting an eye. Joe has strong leadership with his workers, who were always on time, and very understanding and thorough with our requests. The craftmanship displayed with his masonry work was also top notch. Couldn't recommend Joe JB higher and wouldn't hesitate to call him again for other work at our place.

I designed and managed a very extensive local landscape renovation, and worked with Joe on the installation of the patio, which is larger than many studio apartments in the city. The design required a high level of craftsmanship and precision. The work site was also particularly challenging in the context of precision, with extensive tree roots and hidden complications. This was a highly scrutinized project that required Landmarks approval and completion that exactly matched my application for construction permit, which included precisely drawn artist renderings of the finished product. In all of my work with contractors, I have found Joe to be one of the most punctual, responsive, and capable people I have worked with. I would not hesitate to recommend him and his company. His crew was professional, punctual, respectful, and careful. They handled every aspect of the work, from demolition to stone placement, with the utmost care. The level of craftsmanship was excellent. During the construction process, Joe checked with me daily to confirm that the work was meeting my expectations and satisfaction. He was always available to answer questions and address concerns. The work was completed on time and perfectly matched my specifications. There was a small issue with the surface that became apparent several days after completion. I had paid for the work in entirety, and had concerns about how my request for repair might be addressed. There was no need for concern, however, as Joe responded immediately and with a great deal of attention. Less than 10 days after the entire project was begun, it was finished to perfection, including any necessary repairs. I highly recommend Joe and look forward to working with him again! Please note that due to client confidentiality, I am not at liberty to disclose the specific address of the work or exact contract amount, but am very happy to be a reference, answer questions about the work done, or share photos. Initially work went well. My prior concrete was in very poor condition and I made it clear to Joe that I was concerned about maintenance and asked him what I should do; he told me that nothing had to be done, the concrete would be fine. The workers did a good job, but I had to point out numerous problems - a broken basement window, disconnected power to garage, tiles broken on garage for example.$250 from the bill and hire my own electrician, which I declined. The real problem came the following spring when I found cracks and flaking on the apron and driveway. Admittedly I delayed in contacting JB, but spoke with Joe in August. He asked me if I had used the driveway in the winter (which I had) and told me that the past two winters had been very severe and the problems were most likely caused by road salt on the tires. He told me to send him photos of the affected area, which I did, and he promised to get back to me to let me know if there was anything they could do. I have not heard from him since that time. In conclusion, if you use this contractor, make sure you are careful to point out any damages since they are careless and make sure to get a warranty on the work, otherwise don't sign the contract.

Dear Member, Thank you for posting this review on our behalf but I am a bit confused based on the numerous conversations we have actually had on these issues and if I may refresh your memory so all other Angies list members can understand just what happened here: 1) I have called you back every single time you contacted me and came to jobsite to inspect. 2) When I came to the jobsite to inspect there were no cracks yet as you stated but there was extensive road salt damage caused by your vehicles being parked on the newly poured concrete after being driven on heavily salted roads and dripping onto concrete contrary to our advise after the job was initially installed. 3) The electrical line you mentioned was brought to your attention when we discovered it to be fully rotted below grade and advised you to bring in a licensed electrician. 4) You mentioned there are cracks in new concrete (which I did not see on my last site visit) which are still under full warranty and we would be more than happy to come out to repair. Anyhow we appreciate your business as it was a pleasure to serve you and look forward to coming back to repair any thing you need corrected. Best Regards, Joe Battaglia

I really had a great experience with this company. When I asked for an estimate for the work we needed to be done, Joe came the next day, showed up on time, was very professional and a straight shooter. He didn't try to sell me a bigger job, either, like a lot of the other companies I interviewed did. I really appreciated that, and it was one of the reasons we hired them, even though they didn't give us the lowest price of the bids we received. Once we scheduled the work, all the paperwork was submitted and they showed up when they said they were going to show up, and the work was done in the time frame given. The work was neat and high quality. Everyone in my co-op was very happy with the job and we will definitely use them again.

I called Joe on Saturday and he showed up at the end of the day after his last job as promised. He provided me with a quote that I felt was reasonable and I was really relying on the recommendations that I saw on Angie's List. I was more concerned with the quality then with the price. I signed with him on the spot and he told me that it would take a week to ten days to get the permit. He called me the same Monday to say he already got the permits and could start work the next day. He told me the job would take 3 days and he called me at the end of each day to update me on the progress. I was not present for the installation. The job was finished on Thursday and the sidewalk looks great. They left everything pretty clean and I just had to fix the grass area where a fallen tree had lifted up the sidewalk and pulled up the sprinklers. I am extremely satisfied with the professionalism and quality of the work done and would recommend them to others. I guess time will tell how the sidewalks hold up but I remain optimistic.

Owner Joe Battaglia was courteous and professional. He came to the house at the scheduled time and gave an honest and thorough estimate for the work to be done. The wall was constructed to my specifications a few days later. His crew of skilled masons built a beautiful wall with a proper concrete foundation that looks like it has always been there. They removed some shrubbery at my request and cleaned the entire site at the end of the day. Everything was left clean and neat as a pin with all debris and left over construction materials removed from my property. My next door neighbor is now the second happiest guy on the block - after me! I would not hesitate to hire JB General Contracting again and would recommend them to anyone needing skilled masonry work.

The job was done in a timely and professional way. The workers were careful craftsmen invested in doing a good job and accomplishing that. They left everything in good order. Joe was in touch with me throughout the process. I am very satisfied with the service and the quality of workmanship. I had gotten several estimates for the job and although this estimate was on the higher end the quality of the work was well worth the price. Upon completion, I was informed that the cement needed to be thoroughly wet down four times the next day. I would have liked to have had that information earlier as I needed to obtain help with it.

Due to the roots of a large tree in front of my property that cracked the sidewalk and lifted the concrete slab of my driveway 5 inches off the ground, I took this opportunity to have the driveway dug up and replace the sewer pipes underneath it. Once that project was completed, I called Joe at JB Contractors for an estimate on replacing the concrete for the sidewalk, driveway and the garage floor. A couple of weeks later on a Monday morning, Tony and his crew arrived at 7:00 am as promised and immediately started tearing up the old concrete and by early afternoon they were pouring in new concrete. I also showed them some loose bricks that needed patching up and they did a nice job repairing them. By 7:30 pm all the concrete had been poured and smoothed out. Tony and his crew returned the next day to cut the driveway, caulk the sidewalk and powerwash the new concrete. Joe checked up with me often to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. I have to say they did a terrific job. Everyone was courteous and professional. I would definitely hire them again for future work.
Description of Work: JB Contractors removed and replaced 40' of sidewalk, a 25' driveway, a 20' concrete garage floor and 30' of concrete curbing. They also replaced a 5' concrete slab by the AC unit and a limestone tread step.

I hired JB General Contracting in May 2015 to replace my driveway and patio with 4000 psi reinforced concrete. I decided to use JB based on Angie's List reviews, plus they have modern vehicles and equipment and impressive offices and facility in Ozone Park. For several weeks leading up to the job, I was very clear with the owner, Mr. Battaglia, regarding my expectations both verbally and in emails with pictures. Specifically, I emphasized to Mr. Battaglia that the appearance of the finished product including the shiny edges and concrete color were important to me. The work started when promised and was completed on time. The workers were very professional and did an excellent job installing the concrete and cleaning up the area. While they had to come back to fill in some gaps around the foundation of my home, and there was some collateral damage to my vinyl fence from equipment exhaust, overall I was pleased with the experience and workmanship. I would have rated this contractor overall A if not for the following. The job required two truckloads of concrete that were delivered in the morning and late afternoon on the day of the job. Mr. Battaglia called me the next day to see how I liked the work and casually told me that they gave me 5000 psi concrete because it would "look better with the shinny edge finish" that I requested. He implied that both loads of concrete were 5000 psi instead of the 4000 psi I ordered since he didn't state only one truck load was 5000 psi. I didn?t think to question this change at the time as it sounded like a good thing for me with a higher-grade concrete at no additional cost so I was happy. However, I did wonder why JB would deliberately give me a higher grade concrete for no apparent good reason which defies business logic. As the concrete started to cure I noticed that the two loads of concrete were drying to different shades. I mentioned this to Mr. Battaglia and he told me it would take 30 days to fully cure and by then the colors would even out. As of the writing of this review four months later, which I deliberately delayed to give the concrete plenty of time to blend, the colors are still different for the two loads of concrete. I?m convinced that two different types of concrete were used on my job since I was told I got 5000 psi when I ordered 4000 psi. It would be refreshing if Mr. Battaglia would acknowledge that a mix up occurred. I understand workers make mistakes, push wrong buttons or cut corners to save time. I now have to spend more money to stain the concrete for a uniform finish to keep from being annoyed every time I look at it. Before writing this review, I attempted to contact Mr. Battaglia via email with pictures of the concrete for an explanation but received absolutely no response. So basically, overall, I give this contractor high marks for workmanship, cost and timeliness and not so great marks for responsiveness. If you decide to use this contractor and you?re having a concrete driveway installed and you?re very particular about how the finished color will look like me (I?m assuming some people won?t care if they have a two tone driveway), then I recommend that you have language stating this clearly inserted in the contract. Otherwise, if you are not satisfied with the work you will likely not get a response.
Description of Work: Remove old concrete driveway and patio and replace with 4000 psi concrete.

Dear Member, Thank you for taking the time to post your review here on Angies list. Simply stated as I mentioned to you numerous times the concrete needs to weather in and cure properly due to the differences in temperature & ambient humidity based on the weather conditions on the days of the separate pours. We appreciate your honesty for stating that as a whole you are satisfied with the work and we look forward to serving you & friends in the near future. Best Regards, Joe Battaglia

this project has been a frustrating disaster from the beginning - all thanks to the contractor and his substandard workers. the project began in spring and should have been completed in under two months (even with the wait for the custom precast steps) but it has been six months and still is not completed properly. after demolition the first attempt at placing the new steps resulted in a first step that was so close to the sidewalk fence that i could not access the garden level without walking over the first steps! the second attempt resulted in spacing that would allow for a person to walk through but not a wheelchair or similar size cart. and the individual stairs each had a three inch overhang over the next step! when i told him it needed fixed he suggested adding random granite pieces to disguise the overhang and suggested moving my front fence onto the sidewalk to allow a wider clearance! finally he agreed to rebuild again. this time they permanently damaged the existing concrete patio and damaged three of the steps when placing them. and they still didn't get the top landing correct. and even when they re-poured the top landing a third time they did not properly pour or float the concrete so it is permanently splotched different shades of grey. and the whole project has been the sloppiest work i have ever seen - they never cleaned up after themselves and never properly protected windows or neighboring property from flying debris and dust. after all of the miscommunications and stall tactics and inattention to detail the owner simply stopped responding to my emails or calls and instead appointed a special person from the company to essentially 'get the project done'. this newly appointed person met with me to view the construction and expressed his disappointment with the low quality of work. he apologized and said that everything would be fixed now that he was on the case. that was a month ago: he spent the majority of the month 'unavailable to be at the site' or 'unable to use his phone' and nothing has been fixed. every single thing they have done in the past six months to try to fix things has ended up with more problems being created. the possible solutions that they have brainstormed at various times have turned into bigger problems. i have had to go to other professionals to research ideas and the products they are using because they are unaware of possible outcomes or using products completely against manufacturer specifications. they still have not offered any comprehensive plan for a solution and seem determined to drag their feet, hoping i will go away and leave them alone. despite my efforts, the last communication i received from the owner of this company was a brief email one month ago that simply said "As you already know I am doing everything in my powers to satisfy you..."
Description of Work: the contract was for stoop construction. existing brick sidewalls remained but steps, railings, and security gate and top landing were removed and were supposed to be replaced with custom precast concrete treads and risers, and the railings and security door were to be replaced with upgraded custom ironwork

Dear customer, We appreciate your honest review and sympathize with your aggravation and disappointment with the quality of service you feel was provided. The review you posted holds some truth-value. In contrast I would like address the accusation on our lack of commitment to rectify the complaints and prove the falsity of your claim. We accept that there were some hiccups in the installation process of the new precast custom made stairs. As your review stated, we attempted several times to correct such unfortunate installation errors. (There alone shows the commitment to providing quality customer care.) Towards the latter end of the project JB did assign a quality control specialist to oversee the remaining phases of complaint mitigation. Mr Rinaldo met with (member name removed) and thoroughly went through each and every complaint. Mr Rinaldo provided (member name removed) his personal cell phone as a 24 hour contact convenience. Upon Mr. Rinaldo's complete evaluation he provided (member name removed) several options to consider as remedies including bringing in new mason experts with expertise in pre-cast, waterproofing, and stucco installation. Several options we suggested in making good on the finish product stemmed from supplying and installing Behrs premium Deckover acrylic resin coating to blend new base finish with existing base finish as seen in photo labeled "damage to original patio." (Member name removed) rejected that idea. Mr Rinaldo then suggested also at our expense to provide customer saw cutting and inlay of 4" wide Pennsylvania bluestone around perimeter including providing bluestone samples for visual aid. (Member name removed) rejected that idea as well. Finally, our last plausible idea was to remove and replace the concrete immediately around the stairs. In all three valuable and acceptable solutions (member name removed) was adamant on seeking advise of above ideas with outside sources of his own. Again all rejected!!! (Member name removed)'s ONLY suggestion was that JB replace the ENTIRE courtyard concrete as the only means of rectifying his complaint. Addressing (member name removed)'s accusation of Mr Rinaldo "for the month being unavailable" is blatantly untrue. On one occasion Mr Rinaldo showed up to (member name removed) home with a specialist in stucco and (member name removed) threw both off site for "not having an appointment." Mr Rinaldo explained that he had a business meeting outside the US and wanted to assure (member name removed) that we are serious about correcting any and all issues even though he was out of town, and wanted to bring the stucco expert up to speed on corrective planning. Moreover, the issue (member name removed) states about Mr Rinaldo's phone "unable to use his phone." Mr Rinaldo does NOT have a smart phone and insists still on meeting with clients in person with pencil and paper for accurate notes and measurements. We are committed to satisfy every customer, and the staple of our firm for the past 30 years has been customer care and commitment. We will continue to honor the above options provided to (member name removed) and ensure his satisfaction.
