I did not have a good experience with them at all. He sent unqualified men and a foreman who kept leaving. SUB- CONTRACTORS! Workers did not know what to do. They kept jumping to different jobs. Can't paint and prep for jobs. Wrong materials used. Workers came unprepared. Can't powerwash and paint at same time. Extremely overpriced on all jobs. Started out good with first meeting. We called them up and they came down and the gentlemen who came down was the owner. He came down, looked at the job, gave us price quotes, and the quotes were outrageously high. Got a estimate for exterior paint on my house from Joe that was $12,000. More than any other company. Maybe he thinks he's related to Rembrandt! Then we separated some of the jobs we wanted to do because the job we wanted them to do was way over budget. The first job we had them do was remove a bunch of trees along my property line that died in the hurricane this past summer. Then the other one was to paint my rod iron fence. They pulled the trees out and in doing so they broke some sprinkler lines and whatever it is. They decided to paint the fence before they pushed the dirt away from the fence. It was a very windy day and they were painting and the dirt was going on the fence and they just kept painting and painting without covering the dirt or moving the dirt away. They tried to replace sidewalk expansion joints with silicone. Looks terrible and what a mess they made. My wife was ballistic because she tried to stop them from doing what they were doing. They weren't doing things right. They came unprepared, didn't have paint brushes, didn't have this, didn't have that, didn't scrape down the fence. It turned out to be a disaster and we had to remove them from the job. They dropped off a dumpster and left it for over a week after workers left. The employees did work hard but they weren't qualified to do the job. When we called the office, nobody knew about the construction business. He seemed very personable but he didn't say he couldn't do the job. Joe had personal problems and was never on job site. He never returns phone calls. He was in court and neglected the business. They never came when they were supposed to. To them it's all about money. Customers should educate themselves about construction costs. Very disappointed and would never recommend them. I think half if not more of the reviews are bogus. All "A's"....really? BEWARE! !!
Description of Work: We used JB Custom Masonry & Concrete to remove dead trees and paint my rod iron fence.

Very good experience overall. Demo took a couple days longer because the old slab was twice as thick as we had originally thought, and they also had some equipment problems. Even though it took the crew extra time they stuck with their original price and their work looks very nice. All the workers were nice guys and very professional. I will definitely use their services next time.

Joe came out and looked over what needed to be done and emailed me an estimate on the job the very next day. I found the entire crew to be professional, courteous and capable in everything that they did. I would highly recommend JB Custom to anyone looking for quality work. I would not hesitate to usethem again if the need arouse. them
Description of Work: JB Custon was hired to repair the front sidewalk and area way in our home. The grade of the sidewalk had been installed incorrectly causing water to accumulate in front of the house every t me it rained. JB Custom came in and tore out the cement in front of the house as well as in the area way. They secured our wrought iron fence and covered any cars parked directly in front of the house. They had to reinforce an old acces panel that went to our basement and cemented securely around it . The put out caution tape and sidewalk closed signs mounted on wooden horses to insure that no one stepped on the freshly poured cement. The sidewalk looks wonderful and we have received quite a few compliments from our neighbors. Someone who lives on e block away came by to ask for their number so that he could get them to come by and give them an estimate.

I called for an estimate and was called back the same day. Joe came to see the work required on the following day, gave me an estimate and said they could start the work within a couple of days. When I called back to confirm the order, Joe came within a few hours to finalize the contract and show me the types of paving available. He said they would lay the base the following day, and his crew arrived on schedule. I had to go out for most of the day and on my return was pleasantly surprised to find that the whole job, base and paving had been completed. It looks great and everything was clean and tidy.

We found J B Contracting via Angie's List, thank you! They immediately returned our call and knew all about how to deal with violations, permits, etc. "JB" came out the next day and gave us the price. We were lucky to get the permit very quickly, and although it was winter, the weather was just warm enough for them to do the job within a few days after that. Every aspect went pretty smoothly. There was a hardworking crew of 2 that demolished the old sidewalk one day, and, the next day was another crew to pour the cement and finish the sidewalk. We also had them put cobblestones around our treepit, and, they had to rebuild the curb as well. The old one had sunken down and was too hard to lift up. A blanket was laid on the new concrete since it was close to freezing, and they did a good job of protecting the sidewalk to keep graffiti and pedestrians off. The next day someone came to finish and clean up the concrete and surrounding areas. If it hadn't been so cold, maybe they could have spent a little more time on the clean up, but, in the scheme of things, this is very very minor. Would definitely hire this very professional and smart company again.
Description of Work: We had received a violation from the city, to repair our sidewalk. The job was to remove the old cement, and replace with new. We also needed the curb rebuilt, and the tree pit enlarged.

They came out to give us an estimate and were good and reasonable. They were here when they said they would be and described everything in detail. I liked it that they went over everything with us and then sent a guy out a second time to give us further details. What I did not like is that it seemed like the guy was in a hurry and was rushing through everything; not giving us a chance to think about things. But he did present the details again so that was good. I will have them quote again in the future.

We chose JB from Angie's List based on the number of the overall positive reviews so we don't know if we got the best price. Our main concern was hiring contractors that would do a good job. Joe, one of the owners, came by for the initial consultation and listened to what we wanted. He explained everything that would be done and gave us two references of clients that his company was currently providing services for. They both said they were happy with the company's work. Once we agreed to hire them, we were sent a contract spelling out in detail the cost and services to be provided. Due to the number of rainy days in October and November, they weren't able to start on the estimated date, but, once they did, they worked week-ends to make up the time. They did not push us to do the front of the house, when they found the cracks, but said it woudl be cheaper as they had the scaffolding already there, but it was up to us. The only negative was during the painting of the windows. Windows were scraped, then painted, as stated in the contract, but it was clear from the result, they should have been sanded as well. We brought this to Joe's attention and the windows were redone. We felt that any questions and concerns we had were dealt with quickly. We felt they were professional and responsible and did a good job. We would hire them again, but would do it much earlier in the season to avoid the cold heavy rain.
Description of Work: We hired JB Custom Masonry & Concrete Inc. to do the pointing on two sides of our house and scraping and painting the windows. The crew came and set up the scaffolding on the side of the house. The grouting around each brick was ground down part of the way through to make way for the new grout. The new grout was put on around every brick. Everything was steam cleaned and the facade was sealed. Lintels were replaced at the top of a couple of windows as the wood was rotted. All the windows were scraped, and painted over with white paint. All the windows were caulked as well as well. They spread a solid cream-colored skim coating on the lower half of the house on both sides. We ended up having them do the pointing on the front of the house as well when they discovered cracks where water was coming in. They followed the same process as the sides of the house except for the color of the caulking. It was cream-colored to match the yellow brick to blend in better and no skim coating along the lower half. They also removed the old analog antenna from the roof and added a little concrete to a small part of the concrete trim as a chunk was missing.

Very pleasant to deal with from start to finish. Communication is key. And Danny was always there to reassure me on any worries and questions I had. I had 15 tons (?) of garden soil to haul away after finishing my backyard paver project over the summer and needed the max sized dumpster allowed for soil removal. I ordered the 15 yard container, and got the 20 instead. I just had to promise not to overload it beyond the 15 yard mark. He explained how the estimate is made up of size of dumpster & content inside. And I'm glad my garden soil is being processed to be resused somewhere else. His driver even helped haul away wooden skids I didn't need when they came for the pick up. (which I'm glad for since I'm too sore from all that shoveling the day before).
Description of Work: Danny was very patient, accomodating, and answered all my questions I had on dumpster rental. The driver was on time (both arrival & hauling away), very helpful and understanding on where I needed it placed.

The notice of violation gave us two choices: allow the City take care of this (at our expense) or take care of it ourselves. We wanted to expedite things so decided to hire our own contracter. We found JB on Angie's list, and they had received high marks. We also had names from a few neighbors for comparison. JB's estimate was close to the estimate the City had provided. One of the other contractors we saw didn't seem to think we needed permits, and that made us leery. Joe certainly understood what permits were required. So we went with JB. Once we decided to move forward, we were able to schedule fairly quickly. They called the evening before and said they'd be out at 8 am the next day, and they were. Joe himself came by mid-day to make sure everything was going well, and called the next morning to check up. Just two slight glitches. First, the evening before they came to do the work, we took a closer look at the violation notice and the markings Joe had left on the sidewalk and discovered that Joe had missed a few. We called Joe in the morning and this was addressed, but had we not noticed it we would likely have had to have a second round of repairs. Second, we did have to follow up with getting the paperwork completed. So our advice would be to pay attention to the details, but our guess is that's always true with any contractor. Today (November 8th) we received the violation cancellation letter, and we're very happy to have put this behind us
Description of Work: The job required obtaining appropriate permits, demolishing cracked sections of the sidewalk, and pouring concrete to replace those sections in response to a notice of violation from the New York City Department of Transportation.

JB Contracting obtained the Landmark Permit and Department of Transportation for the proposed work. A few days after obtaining the last permit, JB Contracting demolished and poured the sidewalk and side walkway in one day. The six construction workers showed up in the morning with the bob cat and dumpster and were prepared with all the materials they needed to do the work. By the end of the work day, the dumpster was gone and adjacent sidewalks and curb area were swept of construction dirt. One worker came back the next day to clean up the plastic (which covered the walk overnight), the 2x form work and the saw horses blocking off the adjacent sidewalks from foot traffic. All in all, we were very pleased with the workmanship and professionalism AND they were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: We asked that our sidewalk and side walkway be replaced with an exposed aggregate (pea gravel) texture in a Landmark approved color, a compacted base with wire mesh reinforcement , in approx. a 4" thickness with caulking between flats . We also requested that the contractor obtain the Landmark permit and the Department of Transportation permit prior to the work commencing. The sidewalk was approximately 60 x 5 feet and the side walkway was about 400 square feet.

If there were an A- or B+ category I'd give that. Being honest, I can't give an A unless there were really no problems, and there were a couple. But I've had way worse experiences with other contractors --JB was pretty good. I got three quotes for this job -- one high, and two lower -- JB was one of the lower ones. I picked them because their guy spent an incredibly long time measuring and remeasuring everything. He seemed very meticulous. He started several weeks later that they originally said he would, so I'd take points off for that. And the initial work was pretty messy and suprisingly unmeticulous around the edges. However, the same day, Joe - the manager I think -- called to make sure I was "100% satisfied." When I told him the problem and sent photos, he sent his guy back to fix up the job right away. It was kind of a pain to have to do that but it looks good now. There were no other problems. I'd consider hiring them in the future.

JB did an outstanding job. They gave us a fair price -- a little bit higher than a couple of other bids we got, but more than worth it for their excellent work and fast turnaround time. The crew came within a few days of our hiring them; they arrived right on time and finished the job in less than a day. They were also very polite, professional, and cleaned up after the job. All during the process, if we had questions or needed to contact someone, they responded right away. We would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We received a sidewalk violation from the city as we were preparing to sell an old house that belonged to our family. We didn't have much time, and JB impressed us with their professionalism and ability to start work fast. They handled everything from start to finish, including getting the required permit from the city, removing the old sidewalk and pouring a new one, and following up to make sure the city re-inspected the pavement and removed the violation.

Negotiated a price that was a little more than I wanted but was within my range and those offered by competitors (Not the lowest price). Arranged for and coordinated the installation and subsequent removal of the sidewalk shed required by DOB. Small crew (foreman and 2 helpers) did all the work. Were very responsive and cooperative, meticulous in conduct and workmanship. They were still working the day Hurricane Irene hit NYC and worked that morning, returned the following morning to finish up. Only one small dissatisfaction, possibly as a result of trying to get ahead of the Hurricane. Several sections of the final wall to be painted appear to not have received the second coat. I didn't notice it until several days after the crew had left. Owner has promised to return to inspect and evaluate but as of this writing, I haven't seen him. For this reason, I'd recommend withholding the final payment until after having had time for a thorough inspection of the job for completeness. Other than that, Kudos to foreman Moh and his crew. Addendum: Several days after submitting this report, the owner, Joe, came to inspect the job. He felt that the problem areas were the result of uneven absorption by 100-year old brick but immediately agreed to re-coat the areas in question. The following weekend Moh and his crew returned and did so to my complete satisfaction. I might point out that this was done even though the contractor had already received final and complete payment so a hold back was not the reason for his return. A commitment to customer satisfaction was. Even so, having a reasonable hold back built into the original contract is a wise precaution to take for any major job, in my opinion.

Excellent experience using JB. Incredibly professional and responsive. Great work. I would not hesitate to recommend them. We first heard of JB from Angie's list. We saw that they had good reviews and decided to call them. Our initial impressions were strongly favorable (starting with them answering the phone - which they always do - through to assessing our requirements and then quoting a price - which was quite competitive). Scheduling the work was straightforward and prompt (they even obtained the landmarks approval for the work as we live in a historic district). Execution of the project went smoothly. The teams that came to our property were all very nice and pleasant people. We are very happy with the results. They paid attention to the details without having to be prompted.

JB sent two guys on Aug 8th and they were on time. They started the demolition work on my dirveway and backyard. On the second day, they finished the demolition work and started setting up blocks and laying the mesh wire on the dirveway and backyard. They didn't show on Wednesday but Joe called me and said that they will be there the next day. Four guys came on Thursday morning on time and started new stucco work on the foundation wall around the house. About noon, they finished setting up the areas and putting these expension joint against the wall around the house. Around 2 pm, the cement truck came and they started pouring the cement on the backyard and work toward driveway. Joe came around 4 PM to check on the work and left. They were very professional and worked until finished around 6:30PM on Thursday. The following week, we had some rain and I was happy to see that my basement was dry. However, on the week of hurricane Irene, I had a lot of water came in to my basement through the foundatin wall. I took pictures and called Joe. He came the next day and saw pictures and the foundation walls were wet. He assured me that the water was not coming through the cement but he agreed to put special joint cement around the house on top of the expension joint. The next day, one of his foreman came and put the joint around the house. So far, I haven't see any water in my basement. Joe and Danny were very professional and they always call me back and try to solve any issue or concern that I have.
Description of Work: I have water coming into my basement when it's rain. The concrete on my drive way and backyard had a lot of cracks and looks old. So, I called JB contracting and Joe came. He took a look at my driveway, backyard and basement. Then, he told me that I needed a new concrete work around the house. I have asked him if I needed to waterproof from outside foundation wall. He said no and the new concrete work will solve my problem and water will not come into my basement after this new concrete work. He gave me a quote and I scheduled with Danny at JB office for the second week of August to start the project.

They not only completed every task with great detail, they also took extra steps to finish all details of the project even if they were not part of the job (ie. painting air conditioning sleeves). We look forward to working with J&B for all of our future projects.
Description of Work: J&B Contracting gave us a timely estimate and upon contractual agreement began work promptly. They replaced four rear window lentils and adjoining brick work, pointed the entire rear wall, cleaned and coated the same wall, replaced rear gutter systems, and detailed the entire rear of our three story building.

The tree root was so large that it uplifted the driveway; it looked like a speed bump. They were able to remove all the damaged concrete in the driveway, which was very extensive; they pulled out the very large tree root which extended the entire length of the driveway while at the same time being careful with my in-ground sprinkler system. Also, a large plastic sleeve was placed under the driveway so the irrigation line can be connected. They then poured the concrete the entire length of the driveway. They also cut expansion joints. The pitch of the concrete was fine, so when it rained the water did not settle in one area, but just flowed out. I appreciated that they were able to accommodate me by doing this extensive work on a Saturday. They were also accommodating when they came out on the day of the installation. At the last minute at my request they were able to replace a few slabs in front the house, and the side and front walkway of the house. The concrete and finishing work they did was impressive; it actually makes the house look better. The price for the last minute add on was reasonable, and did not feel they tried to overcharge for either coming out on Saturday, or my last minute work request. I think they are a professional company and will charge you a decent price for good work. I recommend this company with anybody looking for any type of construction work to be done. I waited a few months to write my review to see how the work held up, and after a few months have gone by since the concrete was poured, the concrete and finishing work they did looks just as good as the day it was installed. They came with a professional crew of workers, friendly, talented, and the truck and equipment they used was definitely professional grade. If you are looking for a company, would give them a call.
Description of Work: We had them redo driveway that was damaged by a tree root.

My experience with JB General Contractors was nothing short of amazing. They sent the experts to do the job, they arrived on time each morning, cleaned up at the end of each day. It took them 9 days from start to finish. I received a phone call each day from Joe who was calling to make sure I was happy with their progress. I will recommend them to all my family and friends and would absolutely hire them again.
Description of Work: After a car crashed into the front of my home I needed a company with good masonry experience to restore my brickwork to the original. The day they came to give me an estimate they took some of the bricks with them so if the job was given to them they could immediately start working on finding the matching bricks. They gave me a written estimate on Friday, August 26 which was in between the other two estimates I received. They started the job on Tuesday, August 30th. The job was to repair brick work, block work and custom fabricated copping. They also had to reset loose granite steps and tiles. The men who worked the job were NOT day laborers they where experienced masons who know their craft. I added on some painting of my door and door frame and again the gentlemen sent to do the job was a professional with years of experience.
