this project has been a frustrating disaster from the beginning - all thanks to the contractor and his substandard workers. the project began in spring and should have been completed in under two months (even with the wait for the custom precast steps) but it has been six months and still is not completed properly. after demolition the first attempt at placing the new steps resulted in a first step that was so close to the sidewalk fence that i could not access the garden level without walking over the first steps! the second attempt resulted in spacing that would allow for a person to walk through but not a wheelchair or similar size cart. and the individual stairs each had a three inch overhang over the next step! when i told him it needed fixed he suggested adding random granite pieces to disguise the overhang and suggested moving my front fence onto the sidewalk to allow a wider clearance! finally he agreed to rebuild again. this time they permanently damaged the existing concrete patio and damaged three of the steps when placing them. and they still didn't get the top landing correct. and even when they re-poured the top landing a third time they did not properly pour or float the concrete so it is permanently splotched different shades of grey. and the whole project has been the sloppiest work i have ever seen - they never cleaned up after themselves and never properly protected windows or neighboring property from flying debris and dust. after all of the miscommunications and stall tactics and inattention to detail the owner simply stopped responding to my emails or calls and instead appointed a special person from the company to essentially 'get the project done'. this newly appointed person met with me to view the construction and expressed his disappointment with the low quality of work. he apologized and said that everything would be fixed now that he was on the case. that was a month ago: he spent the majority of the month 'unavailable to be at the site' or 'unable to use his phone' and nothing has been fixed. every single thing they have done in the past six months to try to fix things has ended up with more problems being created. the possible solutions that they have brainstormed at various times have turned into bigger problems. i have had to go to other professionals to research ideas and the products they are using because they are unaware of possible outcomes or using products completely against manufacturer specifications. they still have not offered any comprehensive plan for a solution and seem determined to drag their feet, hoping i will go away and leave them alone. despite my efforts, the last communication i received from the owner of this company was a brief email one month ago that simply said "As you already know I am doing everything in my powers to satisfy you..."
Description of Work: the contract was for stoop construction. existing brick sidewalls remained but steps, railings, and security gate and top landing were removed and were supposed to be replaced with custom precast concrete treads and risers, and the railings and security door were to be replaced with upgraded custom ironwork

Dear customer, We appreciate your honest review and sympathize with your aggravation and disappointment with the quality of service you feel was provided. The review you posted holds some truth-value. In contrast I would like address the accusation on our lack of commitment to rectify the complaints and prove the falsity of your claim. We accept that there were some hiccups in the installation process of the new precast custom made stairs. As your review stated, we attempted several times to correct such unfortunate installation errors. (There alone shows the commitment to providing quality customer care.) Towards the latter end of the project JB did assign a quality control specialist to oversee the remaining phases of complaint mitigation. Mr Rinaldo met with (member name removed) and thoroughly went through each and every complaint. Mr Rinaldo provided (member name removed) his personal cell phone as a 24 hour contact convenience. Upon Mr. Rinaldo's complete evaluation he provided (member name removed) several options to consider as remedies including bringing in new mason experts with expertise in pre-cast, waterproofing, and stucco installation. Several options we suggested in making good on the finish product stemmed from supplying and installing Behrs premium Deckover acrylic resin coating to blend new base finish with existing base finish as seen in photo labeled "damage to original patio." (Member name removed) rejected that idea. Mr Rinaldo then suggested also at our expense to provide customer saw cutting and inlay of 4" wide Pennsylvania bluestone around perimeter including providing bluestone samples for visual aid. (Member name removed) rejected that idea as well. Finally, our last plausible idea was to remove and replace the concrete immediately around the stairs. In all three valuable and acceptable solutions (member name removed) was adamant on seeking advise of above ideas with outside sources of his own. Again all rejected!!! (Member name removed)'s ONLY suggestion was that JB replace the ENTIRE courtyard concrete as the only means of rectifying his complaint. Addressing (member name removed)'s accusation of Mr Rinaldo "for the month being unavailable" is blatantly untrue. On one occasion Mr Rinaldo showed up to (member name removed) home with a specialist in stucco and (member name removed) threw both off site for "not having an appointment." Mr Rinaldo explained that he had a business meeting outside the US and wanted to assure (member name removed) that we are serious about correcting any and all issues even though he was out of town, and wanted to bring the stucco expert up to speed on corrective planning. Moreover, the issue (member name removed) states about Mr Rinaldo's phone "unable to use his phone." Mr Rinaldo does NOT have a smart phone and insists still on meeting with clients in person with pencil and paper for accurate notes and measurements. We are committed to satisfy every customer, and the staple of our firm for the past 30 years has been customer care and commitment. We will continue to honor the above options provided to (member name removed) and ensure his satisfaction.

Joe along with his Foreman Mo and crew did a good job in the front of my house. There was water leakage in my basement coming from my front steps and Mo assured me he would do a good job of sealing the water out. It has rained pretty hard since the completion of the construction and now I can happily say my basement is dry. Mo also came up with an idea to widen my driven which really helps when pulling the car in. There was some unexpected rise in cost during the construction, but overall I'am very satisfied with the work they've done. Thank you JB Contracting.

They estimated the work to be about 2 days worth of work. Their work was excellent, however I feel they overcharged me as they only worked one day, and an 1 and a half painting the next day. The painting was thrown in to fill in some time for the second day.
Description of Work: They only replaced a 3ft section of a wall. They were supposed to take down a 10ft section on the original agreement. They also worked on my steps and my garage.

I reached out to several businesses for quotes. JB Contracting was lower, and had a faster timeframe for work. Joe came out to give me quote. He was punctual and turned the quote around quickly. It did take some badgering to get the work scheduled, and I was given a date only to learn a day before that they planned to come in a week early. I think this had to do with when they received permit for sidewalk replacement but I did have to scramble to rearrange my work schedule. He sent a very professional team of about five guys who worked so hard. They arrived precisely on time, worked from 8 am till nearly 9 pm and completed most of the job in one day. Joe stopped by to check in and called several times during the day. They broke up all the old concrete/asphalt, hauled away all the debris, spread the gravel, laid down mesh and then a cement truck came and poured all the concrete. They then spent hours creating the seams, sealing with a rubber compound and doing edging. They really new what they were doing. They came back the next day and put a coating on stoop. It all looks great! I got a chance to see that it drained properly as well during a torrential rain a few days later. Perfect.. no puddling. I was very satisfied with JB Contracting. Joe gave me excellent advice, was polite, professional and honest. I even asked for a quote to put in iron fence and driveway gate. He gave me one- that was quite high and he encouraged me to go with a lower quote. I would definitely work with JB Contracting again. Great job and the hardest working group of guys I have ever seen!

The experience from estimate to completion of the job was very smooth and professional. I scheduled an appointment with Joe for an estimate. He came on time and gave me an estimate right away. When I told him that my neighbor was concerned about a heavy concrete truck rolling up on her portion of the street, possibly damaging her concrete, Joe suggested a pump. Although it came at an additional cost, it was good option to have for this type of situation. I had to wait about a week after providing a deposit for a start date but that was mostly due to the weather. On the day the job was to be done, the crew got there on time and began work right away. Mo, the supervisor, introduced himself and was very pleasant and courteous and explained what they were doing. The crew worked relatively quietly given that they had to break up concrete. They were also very neat. They used equipment that got the job done quickly and efficiently. They barricaded the perimeter when they completed the job on Saturday and returned on Monday morning to remove the cones and tape. I am very pleased with the outcome.

.The crew arrived early in the morning and began cuttin the old cement driveway with a heavy saw. They also broke up the apron in front of th garage doors. It took several hours of prep work. The new apron was poured. It was angled for proper runoff to the drywell. The driveway opening was filled with soil and the cement dust was swept up and hosed off the surrounding areas. The curb was also repaired. We had heavy rain the next day an it seems the driveway fix will work well.

It took us a while to hook up,but that was my fault because I travel a lot. Mr. Battalglia was very good about returning phone calls and when we were able to secure a date, his crew was there at my front door at 7:30 A.M. and stayed until 6:30 P.M. and actually finished the job..They took care not to get dust and debris on my neighbor's car and clean up was very thorough. I would definitely recommend JB General Contracting to anyone.

Dear Member, Thank you so much for your prompt & courteous review you posted on our behalf. We look forward to serving you again soon. Best Regards, Joe Battaglia
I first had JB Contractors (specifically Joe) come out in the spring of 2014 to discuss ALL the exterior work I wanted done on the house. I had them price a lot of stuff (new concrete driveway, sidewalk, new porch built with bricks and concrete with granite platform and granite steps, paver walkway, pointing of the bricks on the house and the separate garage, patio in the backyard, etc.) I wanted A LOT! We decided to have work done this spring and coincidently without fail NYC DOT sent us a sidewalk violation notice. Oh well we were planning on having the work done anyway. Joe came to the house again before any work began to review the scope of work that we wanted done. About a month ago, I finally contracted to have them start work on the house - we did not do everything that we had quoted in spring 2014. We had the sidewalk and driveway replaced with new concrete, pavers that lead to the house, newly built porch with granite stairs and granite tile platform on the porch. The door saddles for the front and side door were replaced with granite to match the work that was done. JB Contractors - got the necessary permits in order to be in compliance with NYC DOT - set a start date and adhered to it - arrived every day early and worked full days - regularly checked in with us as the work was in progress. - worked neatly } cleaning up every day before they left for the day - was extremely professional and patient when dealing with our difficult neighbors - worked diligently as neighbors and passerbys looked on as they worked - completed the work in the time frame stated at our initial meeting in spring 2014 } it took 2 weeks Extras } - tightened the screws on our storm door - just because they were loose - made recommendations regarding the landscaping once the work was completed Our house has a completely new look. I would definitely have JB Contractors do work on my home again in the future. Great job Joe, Danny, Anthony, Mo, and the rest of the crew.
Description of Work: JB Contractors replaced the entire sidewalk and driveway. They laid a paver walkway that leads to the newly built porch. The porch was built with bricks that matched the bricks on the house. The stairs are granite and the porch platform are granite tiles. The door saddle was replaced to match the new granite on the porch.

This was our first driveway repair project after a decade of homeownership and we were initially apprehensive about finding a company we could trust as we interviewed a few contractors. From the onset, Joe was very knowledgeable and thorough in setting appropriate expectations with respect to timing and cost. He presented us with a plan to level the driveway and executed on it efficiently. Upon starting his work on the driveway, he maintained a high degree of communication by providing thorough status updates throughout. With respect to our front concrete steps, we gave him a vision (with limited details) of how we wanted it to look and he delivered on it flawlessly. His presence onsite and level of responsiveness also made us furthermore comfortable. While the cost, at first, may seem to come at a slight premium, Joes final output far exceeds on quality and delivers on peace of mind. The high ratings are very well deserved for JB General Contracting.

Dear Member, Thank you so much for the kind words you posted here on our behalf. It was a pleasure serving you............. Best Regards, Joe Battaglia
When I had the estimate done, he promised the world to me but without any of the logistics. Joe speaks loudly and really fast so it is difficult to get a word in. I got the contract emailed and it said it would be pavers on a concrete base and it would take two days. I worked with many contractors and they all said you need to have a gravel, silica base to allow for drainage. I had also asked for a drain put in near my house and that was not mentioned in the contract either. I emailed back with my questions and he wrote back that he made an accident and it would be that base and would take 1 day. I am mad at myself for not asking for money off then though. The crew showed up on Saturday and I asked them if they has the weed barrier and they said yes. Suddenly it started to rain lightly and the lead man told me they needed to leave. This was after getting my neighbor up at 7:30am on a Saturday to move his cars. I tried to ask them to wait it out a bit and the man said he was actually sick and needed to go. Not sure why they even bothered. I spoke to the owner, Joe, and he was p***** at his crew and told me his guys were "F%^ing A*******". I was taken aback by that. Not a great way to describe your crew. They finally rebooked for the next Saturday. The owner called me the night before and told me that my neighbor needs to wake up at 7:30 again and move his car. I said that he doesn't NEED to do do anything. He is doing me a favor and he can sleep a little more on a Saturday. He said OK. The crew showed up on time. They showed me that they could not take up my previous patio which means no drain. Ugh. The rest of the day went really well except when the owner called and told me he wanted the two next payments together. I said no, I will pay the second payment now and the last AFTER it is done. The crew worked really hard and were very nice. They were done after about 7 hours. It came out very nice and I gave them the last payment as well as a tip. Over all his crew was great but I didn't feel like Joe knew how to talk to clients and be upfront with them. Maybe it was because I was a woman but I hope he learns to talk to clients in a more professional way.

Dear Member, Thank you for taking the time to post an honest & sincere review here on Angies List on our behalf. Yes I was upset at my foreman for wanting to leave with the entire crew at the first sign of a passing shower as my work etiquette is whatever it takes to complete the job so a simple 20 minute passing shower was definitely no reason for them wanting to leave the job. Anyhow the results do in fact speak for themselves as you stated the work came out quite lovely and we hope you enjoy your new patio oasis for many years to come. It was a pleasure serving you. I requested three bids from three different contractors. Although JB was not the lowest bid, I thought that Joe Battaglia seemed the most knowledgeable and most committed to masonry. He knew a lot about concrete, and he assured me that he would use reinforced 5000 psi for concrete, which is more expensive and not necessarily expected for a job of this scale. He gave me a 1 year warranty, and I bought an additional warranty for the second year for 300 USD. JB General Contracting took out the cracked pavement in front of my townhouse in Upper Manhattan and replaced it within 5 hours. The company also got a permit to do the work within the promised time. I needed the job done in June, and as promised, JB General Contracting delivered. The pavement now looks amazing. I thought Joe, the owner and principal of the company, was very smart and cared about his work. Danny, the person who booked the job and got the permits, was very helpful on the phone. I would hire JB General Contracting again.

Joe Battaglia called back on same day I called him and came next day to do estimate. After contract was signed, crew came the next week. They were knowledgable, pleasant and professional. Did job in one day. When I noticed after they left that they and I--when I inspected the work with them--had missed a hole between bricks, I called Joe. They came the following day and fixed it. I am very please with the work and responsiveness.
Description of Work: Pressure washed front of house and concrete steps. Repaired cracked concrete on stairs and stoop. Replaced cracked bricks on brick wall and repaired cracks and holes between bricks.

I called JB contracting to schedule an appointment for an estimate and within a day or two Joe the owner came by. His knowledge of the work that needed to be done was extensive and he clearly explained what the job would entail. Within a day or two we received an estimate via email and worked commenced shortly after. He estimated that the job would take 10 days to complete and they were done in 9. Joe addressed all of my concerns and questions promptly via email. I'm thoroughly pleased with the outcome of the work done and also the fact that Anthony went above and beyond to find the brick color I wanted. Overall experience was excellent and I look forward to working with JB General contracting in the future.
