Mr. Enwright came to our house on several hours' notice to give us a free estimate. Our roof had a second layer over 20 years old put on by the previous owner, clearly near the end of its life. We wanted to know from a roofing specialist just how near that was, as two general house inspectors had differed in their estimation of how many years the roof had left. The cost of Enwright's estimated job was $9000 for the required tear-off and new lifetime shingles with ice shield and extra ventilation installed as well. We told him that in the event we couldn't sell our house this summer, we would likely hire him to replace the roof in the fall. The problem was that the propective buyers of our house, who live in the area and who had seen the property twice, were calling around to various roofers in the area for their own information about our roof. before and after they had submitted their purchase offer but before it was ratified. We had not shared any information about this estimate with them, including the name of Enwright Roofing. But one of the local businesses that our prospective buyers contacted was Enwright's, and during their conversation not only did Mr. Enwright reveal that he had given us an estimate, he also (according to our realtor who heard from the buyer's agent) gave them a different estimated cost and a different opinion on the life of the roof than what he had given us. He told us that although the roof looked very old and unattractive, it was "two roofs' due to the second layer, and might have 7-8 years of life left, though he didn't recommend letting it go that long. Apparently what he told our propective buyers (with whom he should not have been discussing a roof that they didn''t own yet) was that the roof had to be replaced immediately. He had 3-4 different conversations with them, as he told us himself. As a result of this breach of the confidentiality that we owners had naturally expected in this transaction, the buyers got extremely nervous. The offer that they had already made referred to the condition of the roof as already justifying a low offering price. But after the inappropriate sharing not only of his estimate for our roof, but an apparently different evaluation of it, the buyers tried to lower the sale price again when additional inspections for the chimney and HVAC systems were made. We felt like we were being tried twice for the same crime! If Mr. Enwright had properly refused to divulge information about an estimate that was the business only of the homeowners (us), our transaction would not have almost foundered as it did and now has cost us several thousand dollars more. If the buyers had asked us, we would have shared Mr. Enwright's estimate with them. My spouse called Mr. Enwright to complain, but he tried to back-pedal the conflict, in fact complaining that he always got caught between sellers and buyers. I have little sympathy for Mr. Enwright. He created this trouble for himself, although it is also true that buyers and sellers both tend to hear what they want to. He comes from a family roofing tradition, and seemed to know his business very well, which is unfortunate because we would never use him now. It seems to us that this roofer probably knows his trade, but doesn't know the business of dealing discreetly with his clients. Perhaps playing off one side against the other is common practice in every aspect of real estate sales, and I'm just being naive. But we expected better. We don't blame our buyers for asking around, though the way their realtor kept using the condition of the roof as a bargaining point mutliple times seemed unfair. In any case, my spouse and I will forever after make sure that any estimates given by businesses are understood to be confidential.
Description of Work: Daniel Enwright, owner of Enwright Roofing, came to our house in Oswego, NY to give us a free estimate on the condition of our roof. We were in the process of selling the house and were considering a purchase offer. that we had received the day before. We knew that the roof would be a factor in our sale, and we had gotten Enwright's name from several neighbors who were pleased with his work on their own roofs several years earlier.

They did a fantastic job. They came and did what they said they would and did not leave a mess. They picked up everything and even came back to check our yard for stray nails and other debris. My husband and I were very satisfied with the service they provided and would definitely recommend them to anyone. The one downside is the cost was a little more than the quoted price due to how much of the roof they ended up ripping off.
Description of Work: The company replaced our roof and installed vents on the roof.
