Everything was handled in a very professional manner with excellent craftsmanship. The only difficulty we had was the weather. The overall process took a little longer than I would have liked. Painting had to be done at a later date due to the cold. Overall we were vary happy with the work.
Description of Work: Ivy Lea Construction came and estimated for a front porch remodel and construction of a shelter with doors and siding. Along with this they faced the bottom of the house with stone along with placing and in the stalling a new bay window. Also, they changed the siding, gutters, and shutters on the upper portion of the house. The lights and electrical to the side and front of the house were installed as well. A small deck was constructed at the back of the patio along with a motion detector.

The representative was very professional and prompt. Unfortunately that is where it ended. He never went into the basement to check the piping and subfloor (for the bathroom) to see if there were any possible problems. He never really inspected the bedroom structure to verify that there was no problems (we told him it was demo'd because of water damage). Then we got the estimate; either he completely messed up everything told to him or he told the estimator wrong information. We told him that we had our own sinks, faucets, and floor tiling, but that was not taken into account. The bathroom quote was a clear 40% more than any other contractor (I received 5 quotes from other top rated Angie list contractor all within a couple $1000 of each other). For the bedroom, he quoted a complete demo of the bedroom(already demoed). The quote here was nearly three to four times of any other quote. It seemed to clear to me that the contractor just did not want to do the job and the overprice everything. Of course, I was happy to oblige removing them from the considered quotes.
Description of Work: A complete bathroom remodel. Tear down to studs. Also putting up dry wall in a bedroom already demo'd.

Why I didn’t choose them to be quite frankly it’s just a personal choice. I think they're absolutely professional. They were in the same ballpark. There were a couple of differences between the two companies on how they wanted to do things which didn’t play out in our decision making at all. It was a preference – one wanted to do this way and one wanted to do it the other way. It didn’t affect my decision at all. They actually were tidy.

Everything went very smoothly, from start to finish. Brad, the primary builder on the job, was polite, professional, confident, and knowledgeable. He kept me apprised of the progress and of any changes made throughout the project. The only minor snag was that the locks to the deadbolt and door knob were not keyed the same, but Ivy Lea contacted the manufacturer and they came out within a few days to switch out one of the locks. The end result of this project left me surprised and impressed. Not only is the new side doorway attractive, it also makes my home more airtight and secure. The money spent on this project was well worth it. I give Ivy Lea Construction straight A's on all aspects of the project and I would not hesitate to work with them again.
Description of Work: Ivy Lea Construction, Inc. tackled the doorway project for the exterior side door to my home. They rebuilt the entire frame including installing a new concrete sill, installed a new door and storm door, applied new drywall on the interior since they framed a 34" x 90" door opening into a 32" x 80" opening, and installed the proper aluminum to make things look nice on the exterior.

Terrible - I am not impressed
Description of Work: I called Ivy Lea construction for 2 jobs. One was for repairing my garage floor. They said that this sort of concrete repair was not done by them and I should contact someone else or I should go to HomeDept and get materials myself. Then I wanted a price quote to have 2 gutters replaced in the rear of the house. The representative said they could do this but recommended we do the whole house instead. I asked for two separate price quotes - one for the job I was primarily interested in and a separate one for the whole house. I received only one quote about a week later. This was only for the entire house at an amount of $18,400. For the second quote, blank paperwork was sent with a brief description and no amounts. I called the representative at Ivy Lea construction. He was not available so I was asked to leave a message in his voicemail which I did asking for the Second quote. Ivy Lea did not return my call or mail me a quote. It seems that if the job is not for a significant amount of money they are not interested and waste your time.

I also see that we mailed a propsoal to you approx `1 week after we were there looking at your project. I see we quoted an entire house full of gutteres, facia and soffit. The price of all the work was for $8,400.00. The 2nd propsoal that we send to you was for a time and material repair to your existing gutters. This propsoal had a minimum of $250.00 for the 1st hr for 2 men to make the repairs. We do all sort of jobs no matter what there size. Sorry would could not have been more helpful with this latest project. Our sales manager reached out to you to see if we could help you any further with this project. We talked about the floor. When I mentioned the entrance to the living room. There was a bunch of screws put in to separate the boards from creaking, I guess, from when they put down the rug. I mentioned about how this section needed to be repaired. Well, on his quote he came back with maybe the sub-flooring needed to be repaired. I think he would have tied it all in the overall price. There was nothing wrong with the sub-floors. We are a huge company with high overhead. They do a beautiful job. They were booked up to. He was late with his quote. He was right on time and very professional. They are just over priced. They do a thorough job. The bathroom they did for my mom is just beautiful.
Description of Work: Ivy Lea Construction quote was ridiculous. It was twice as high as everybody else.

He has really been on top of things; he came out to get an architect involved and has been excellent. We are going to do the project in the spring. He responded promptly and went out of his way by coming over and reviewing what we wanted done. He really wanted the job; he did what our wishes were in a very timely manner. I like it that he was honest about what time of year he could get the job done. You get quality for what they give you; the owner goes through the entire itinerary about what materials are going to be used and what options we have; I think he was more than fair. He was very personable, nice and timely. He was professional, wore a clean company shirt and his vehicle was had company markings too.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Ivy Lea Construction. He actually gave us an initial estimate and then followed up with a final bid. The job is going to be putting on a new front porch with new overhang and supports. He is going to pour block pillars as well as add sod in several areas around the edges and sides of my house.

I received quotes from a number of contractors who had experience replacing flat porch roofs similar to mine. Ivy Lea was by far the most expensive option (two times next closest bid), but they provided a very thorough written estimate and they had sold me on their product (the EPDM rubber) being better than what the competition was offering. It was lower maintenance, had a longer expected life, and better water protection. I ended up choosing Ivy Lea because I wanted a qualified and reputable company to do the work, and not cheap out when it comes to protecting from water damage. They also offered 0% for 12 months financing on the project, which made the higher price easier to swallow. By the time I signed the contract, the start date was now pushing into late November. The work kept being pushed back and actually did not begin until early the following year. A lot of this was due to holidays and trying to schedule around the weather, as rain is apparently bad for the installation of this product. Once a window of good weather to perform the work was found, the crew arrived on time and got right to work. It went very quickly, and by mid day, I checked the progress and they were already about to start installing the rubber EPDM. I asked the crew how bad the damage was in the corner that where the water damage was found. I was told the sheathing in the corner was rotted pretty badly, but they had cut out the old rotted section and replaced it with 3/4" plywood. I was concerned with the structure under the sheathing, but I was ensured everything was sound. The rubber roof was installed, and the a few of the crew returned to following morning to finish up some loose ends. They explained to me the do's and don'ts for the roof, cleaned up and left. The crew had removed the existing gutters on this roof, and did not replace them. When questioned, I was told it was not included in the contract (which it was not) and that they were not needed. Fast Forward a few months later, I opened up the corner of the house where the water damage occurred and quickly learned it was much much worse than I thought. Apparently this was an ongoing problem that the previous owner had dealt with than fixing it, they instead covered it up. The entire corner structure of the room was completely rotted away. Another contractor was brought in to assess the work. He was quick to point out the roofing crew must have been aware of at least some of the damage that was found by pointing out the new sheathing installed was screwed into rotted wood, and the large number of screws used in such a small area as they were hunting for something solid to screw into. It was also pointed out the new roof should have installed new fascia boards around the entire perimeter of roof, but instead they only installed rubber to the edge of the house, which allowed water to leak behind the siding. I called Ivy Lea to complain, and insisted they come take a look at what we had found. They sent a supervisor out to take a look, and he agreed with everything that was found. They assigned a crew to correct the issues, which was done completely under warranty. I believe now I have the roof I paid for, but I would have preferred that the issues I was concerned about was brought to my attention originally rather than covering up. After all that I why I paid a premium to bring in a reputable company to do this work in the first place....to have it done right the first time. If I didn't bring in a 2nd set of eyes to review the work done, who knows what problems would have occurred in the years to come.
Description of Work: Evidence of water damage in the room beneath my 2nd floor front porch, lead me to replacing the existing flat roof to fix the leaking issue. Ivy Lea tore off the existing roof down to the existing sheathing, replace any damaged sheathing, and install a new rubber (EPDM) roof.

I am also glad to hear they were able to explain the do's and don'ts for your new roof, and that the entire area was cleaned up and left neat. I also understand that once you started your interior remodeling project that you found an old ongoing leak that had rotted away the corner of the roof deck, top plates wall and sill plates. The complications of the roofing were not easy for any of us. Mike would not give up until the project was to our satisfaction. The workers were true craftsmen, willing to accomodate and answer any questions, and they actually took PRIDE in their work! A group of men that Mike can be proud to send to your home. The project was challenging, but Mike perservered and would not give up until I was satsified with the project. Kate was always kind on the phone, I was always notified 24 hours in advance when their staff would be coming to do work. If I called with a question, Mike would show up THAT DAY if possible to oversee the situation, sometimes within the hour. He and his crew were always polite, on time and truly professional. Neighbors commented on the professionalism and politeness of the staff. Mike guarentees his work, and did he ever stand behind his word! Thank you to Ivy Lea for a beautiful job. We could not have asked for more, and are so glad and thankful for all your patience, and professionalism! I would be PROUD to be on a Value-Pack ad etc.! I am so happy when I see your Billboards...I think..."Hey, Customer Satisfaction IS TRUE" that is why I selected them in the first place! Fantastic crew from start to finish.
Description of Work: I had a small 2 story porch which needed to be demolished and replaced. A concrete driveway pad expansion, brick replacement and rebuild on first floor porch with concrete cap and concrete stair rebuild. Railings and posts on first floor and railings on second story porch replacement. 2 New doors needed replacement, one leading to second story porch, and screen door replacement on each. Second story porch needed more pitch for it was holding water in strange places. Mike Washington (owner) and his fantastic staff worked diligently on a project that started out small but turned into a monster. Mike and his staff were kind, professional and committed to completing this job to the best of their ability. They did not stop at the project when it appeared..."Just OK". Anytime I asked a question from Mike, Wayne, Mark or Nick (to name a few professionals) I received a well thought out answer with a commitment to getting things done right. The entire staff did not quit on the project until not only myself, but the entire crew was satisfied with a beautiful job.

We did not choose to work any further with this company.
Description of Work: The company sent a rep out to give a free estimate on a kitchen addition and remodel. Three weeks later, the company sent us a letter with an estimate that was 2-3 times more than all of the other (4) builders we had contacted. They did not give any details about how they came up with the estimate or follow-up. They obviously did not want to do the job and put little effort into coming up with an estimate.

Member, Thank you for your feedback. I see we were out to your home in late July 2012. I see that you were thinking about adding an addition and kitchen remodel. Since there was a addition involved in your project we mailed out a design agreement and supplied a budget cost associated for your project. We actually can not produced a detailed estimate that we always send out to all our clients for all our projects that we propose, till we get into the design stage of the project. I see we supplied you with a budget of $120,000.00 - $150,000.00 for the work that was discussed at our first meeting of your wants and needs check list. So sorry we were not able to meet your needs at this time, but if you ever need anything in the future, please don't hesitate to give us a call. thanks Mike Washington, Pres. Excellent workmanship -- installed blocking for grab bars. Careful, thorough work. Only problem was miscommunication among WNY Kitchen and Bath, estimator, and job boss. Job boss worked directly with me to make sure I got what I wanted. It's beautiful -- excellent work. Guys were quiet and cleaned up each day.
Description of Work: Gutted bathroom and installed fully accessible bathroom -- walk in shower (tub sized), toilet, grab bars, new cabinets, mirror, electrical, plumbing. Reused counter top. I chose high quality materials that raised the price above the initial estimate.

This company, or at least its estimator, does not understand historic homes. I interviewed many contractors in the course of putting together my FHA 203(k) package, and my experience with Ivy Lea stands out as a low. The guy basically told me the house wasn't worth repairing. I've almost completed the renovation process and the house is being appraised at close to $300,000. I did well with my contractors, and I'm glad I did not chose Ivy Lea. Here's my advice - go with your gut - if a contractor is making you crazy during the estimation process - drop them and don't look back.

Member, So sorry to hear that your last experience with us was not up to your expectations. I see that we were out to your home in Feb of 2012 to give you a proposal for a home you were in the process of purchasing. I see we proposed work for a new roof, gutters, painting your home, and rebuilding a porch on a historic home. We have completed hundreds of projects on historical homes in the western NY area. Maybe our estimator was not aware of your intentions on your new home. So sorry if you took offence to one of our customer service representatives. Please don't judge an entire company by one persons actions. I am glad you were able to find a good group of contractors to take care of the several different types of work that you needed on your home. If you wish to discuss this any further please fell free to give me a call. Thanks Mike Washington, Pres. Ivy Lea Construction, Inc.

concrete repair, replacement windows, doors

They gave me an estimate an everything was done by Ivy Lea Construction as planned. I think their price was too high, but the reason why is because they're quality was very good and it's like you do get what you pay for. Everything came out good, but the only thing that I was dissatisfied with was my back screen door because one of the things that you use to raise up the screen or the window was broken and the other one doesn't work and I'm afraid to lift it up. I brought it to somebody's attention twice and they still have not replaced the broken part and this was done in June. I had to call and remind them, but why when I told the president of the company and the guy who came out and tested everything and it still hasn't been replaced. I got a letter or bill in the mail that said replacement on June something saying that it was done with zero balance because it was under warranty, but it wasn't done. Another thing that I'm dissatisfied with is when they put the sidewalk in they did an excellent job, but they took out some of the dirt along the edging of the concrete and they went and replaced from the sidewalk to the curb with dirt. They brought a truck around and poured all the dirt on there and told me that it would improve the sod that's already there. Well it didn't and it was like desert dirt. They threw grass seed on there and the birds wouldn't even eat it. It just looked like desert dirt and I kept watering it. I didn't say nothing and went to like Home Depot and got some Scott's manure and compose and mixed it in with that and I put the Scott's Patchmaster in there to replace it, so now I have some grass growing. The street over I see where Ivy Lea did their driveway and it's good, but I also see where they threw all that dirt on their whole front lawn and I feel sorry for them. That's the only complaint I have is the dirt that they have for landscaping though in the contract it does say that the homeowner is responsible for the landscaping afterwards, but the thing is I really didn't appreciate the dirt that they put there. Their landscaping soil is awful and I do not recommend that they put down their dirt. It's horrible and full of weeds too. Their very good, but very high priced. I thought that I should have looked around and stuff, but I didn't want that to happen and I just said that I'll pay for it. I had the money saved and I knew it was going to be done right. They always called and said that they would be here at a specific time and were here to the dot on time. They're performance and cleanup was excellent.
Description of Work: I had my interior and exterior front doors replaced and they realigned everything for me. I had a back exterior screen door put on and flashing done around all my windows. I had a front sidewalk put in, new concrete poured stairs put in, and brand new aluminum railings installed. I have an addition in the back of my house and they also did the flashing around that and sealed everything.

roofing, chimney caps, chimney repair

The house had experienced years of leaking around the chimney. We knew this when we bought it and had tried various "remedies", all without lasting success. We interviewed three roofing companies and concluded that Ivy Lea would be best equipped to both do the job at hand (the roof) and handle any unexpected issues (the chimney). We were not disappointed. Everyone was very responsive and they did a great job, including the removal of the old roofs and the cleanup. They arrived when they said they would, worked diligently, and got the job done when they promised they said they would, even though the chimney issues proved to be a surprise. I took a video of part of the process and published it on YouTube as "Ivy Lea Construction Does a Roof" This was entirely unsolicited by Ivy Lea and reflects my satisfaction with the job.
Description of Work: Removal of four (!) roofs, installation of membrane roof and also conventional shingle roof; take down of chimney brick damaged by years of leaking, rebuild of chimney with new brick, installation of new poured concrete chimney cap, and removal of all materials from site.

gutter repair, insulation, replacement windows, energy audit

Once they finally communicated with me and things finally got started it went smoothly. The fellows working on the project were very nice, friendly and answered any questions I may have had. We really do enjoy the Windows and being able to now open them to get a breeze through out the house........Fine job Done!!! One item I am still not too pleased about is the bathroom exhaust cap they put on the roof. In my opinion it is a cheap flimsy aluminum cap and when it rains and or is windy it is constantly "flipping" and noisy.......at first water was dripping into the house from it, but the Company send a guy out who just put some caulking on to weigh down the flap. Even though there is no water coming in at the moment, it still makes a lot of noise when it rains or is windy....not good since this bathroom is right near the bedrooms!! At the end of this project, they normally do another Energy Efficiency Audit and the results basically did not change, which is what I had expected.
Description of Work: We began with an Energy Efficiency Audit in June, 2011. I always wanted to have an Audit in order to figure out why the house was cold during the winter season. The results of the Audit surprised me when the fellow said the house is pretty tight already for a 60 year old house. Since we had really small windows in the bedrooms and for safety purposes (in case of fire) we were thinking of getting new large double hung, triple pane Windows and also more insulation in the Attic. We decided to get 10 new Double Hung Windows, Attic Insulation and new Gutters. The original Proposal was dated 6/29/2011 with a Contract dated 7/13/2011, with the stipulation that all work must be started & completed before the weather got cold and an estimated start date of 9/13/2011. We also had the impression that the Attic Insulation and Gutters were to be done earlier than the Windows due to ordering those and construction to increase/decrease size of openings for windows. (Note: I did not get any other estimates since this Company was highly rated here on this website and friends had used them in the past). Price is fairly high compared to others though, but I also wanted a local neighborhood company. Well, we waited all of July, August and than Sept. started and we still had not heard a word from the Company, so I called them on Sept. 7th asked what is happening and why hasn't the Gutter and Attic guys shown up yet and the weather was beginning to turn cold. I was told someone would call me back.....I did get a call back with really bad news.......the Window Manufacturer they recommended is going out-of-business and finally told them that my Window order would not be made. We now had to start over.....They recommended selecting Windows from a different manufacturer.......Sunrise Windows. So we selected the Windows on Sept. 9th and a new Proposal was prepared and dated 9/9/2011. While waiting for the Windows, on 9/16/2011 the new Gutters.....5" seamless aluminum gutters with hidden hanger fasterning system and downspouts was installed, and the Attic insulated. The Attic work included sealing all protrusions through attic floor with 2-part expanding foam insulation. Install baffles to overhangs to main airflow. Build up frames at attic area so insulation does not fall into home if opened. Weatherseal and insulate attic access panel and install approx. 12" loose blown cellulose insulation to entire attic flat area and install bathroom exhaust fan through roof to exterior. Windows finally arrived early October. On 10/12/2011 through 10/14/2011 the 10 double hung, triple pane Sunrise Windows were installed. I had ordered vinyl replacement windows. The large front window was removed and new construction done to decrease the opening size to install the 3 double hung, triple pane new windows. They had to build wall to install the shorter windows by installing drywall and insulation to interior and finish painting wall. The other 5 windows would fit into existing openings; the last 2 Windows had to go into a wall which needed to increase the size of the opening in order to fit the windows.

Member, I am glad to see you were able to take advantage of the free home energy audit, that is paid for by NYSERDA. Nice to see you home was realativily effiecient for a home that is 60 years old. Sorry it took so long to get your windows in. Our old window manufator was a victom of the recession. Quite a shame, since they were in bussiness for over 50 years. I was glad to hear once the new windows were ordered they were installed quickly. So happy to hear the fellows working on your project were very nice and friendly and answered all your questions.

Member, Thanks for the continued bussiness. I beleive this is the 4 th project we have worked on for you. I am so happy you are happy!! Thank you for the compliments on my staff. They are the best in Western New York. Thanks again Mike Washington Pres. Ivy Lea Construction
The project went very well. They were able to start a little sooner than expected and the project went smoothly. When the supplier let us down by delivering the wrong vanity top and sink, Ivy Lea swung into action. I did not need to worry about a thing - they handled any controversy with the supplier. All I had to do was pick out another top. Even in that, Dan remembered how I had admired a glass vanity top and persuaded me to "just go look" at what could be done. I'm so glad he did. The counter I had made is just gorgeous. Although we had a bit of a delay waiting for the new vanity top, the project ended beautifully.
Description of Work: Ivy Lea has just remodeled a second bathroom for me. They removed the tub and surround and all fixtures. Installed new tub, new tile, floor, vanity. toilet, etc. Painted.

Member, So happy to hear your new bathroom is beutiful. Thank you so much for your confidence in Ivy Lea again. This is the second bathroom that we have installed fro you. So glad to hear that your project ran smoothly. I was sorry to hear there was the small delay getting the proper counter top installed at your home, but I think the wait was worth it. The new top looks awesome!! Really nice selection. You did a great job here. I had my doubts about the glass counter top, but that is something that I will recommend in the future for some of our clients who are lookign for something a little different. So very NICE!!! Thanks again. As always please give Ivy Lea a call for any of your home improvements. Mike Washington Pres. Ivy Lea Construction.
