The work itself appears to be of good quality. The initial estimate provided by Mr. Beitel for the entire project was $3150.00, the low bid among a number of contractors who provided estimates. However, roughly a week into the work he requested an extra $1100.00, saying he had underestimated the work involved, and needed the money to cover additional labor that had already been performed (rather than "rush" the work to stay within the initial estimate). So, he was paid the amount requested. Finally, after the work was completed, he submitted a bill for an additional $236.00 for the last day's labor and additional materials. This amount was paid as well, bringing the total project cost to $4486.00, roughly 42% above the initial estimate. Had that been the estimate provided before his bid was accepted, we likely would not have agreed to it (at the least, we would have postponed the project until next year, and looked into more economical alternatives).
Description of Work: Mr. Beitel constructed stone steps leading down a slope to a creek. Work involved surface preparation, transport and shaping of the stones, and installation using mortar and concrete.
