. We're late in getting this review posted, but am happy to put it up now to let you know how fantastic West Side is. We'd used them a few times before to move stuff into and out of storage. They were always friendly, professional, and efficient, so there wasn't any doubt we'd use them for our move to Philadelphia. To say they exceeded our expectations is to put it mildly. The job was for packing and shipping, and our apartment was overstuffed with items accumulated over twenty years of living there. The supervisor, Ian, demonstrated a personal investment in the project that stunned us, all the way down to spending four days before the actual move date helping us with pre-packing to be sure we were ready when move day arrived. The entire team was friendly and professional. It should be noted that Ian is a rather intense individual -- he's not only committed to getting the job done, but making sure you adhere to that commitment as well -- but never less than professional. He handled everything with our old building's management well, and dealt with a potential problem with getting enough time in our new building's elevator without any kind of friction. All-in-all, during a very stressful time in our lives, it was a joy working with him. The move-in was fast and as stress-free as this kind of thing could be. When we warned Ian that a brace had fallen off our bed a few years ago and they had to be careful in transporting it, he not only took care of it without difficulty, but also had one of his team reattach the brace once the bed was moved in. Over and over, West Side has proven their skill and worth. This difficult move was the icing on the cake, and we consider ourselves fortunate to have worked with them. If there was an A+ rating, we would not hesitate to give it.

It was a horrible experience. The guys were nice, but they didn?t bring the proper materials to pack up the rooms. They just smashed stuff together and complained to me the whole time. They also damaged several items. I filed a claim with their insurance and was never reimbursed for said damage.

Dear Member, I am sorry you were dissatisfied with our service. It is unfortunate that one of the many fragile items we moved accidentally broke, and subsequently left you with a terrible impression of our service. Our standard practice is two wrap furniture carefully with blankets and cardboard, as well as secure fragile items in heavy duty boxes with proper packing materials. It is our company policy to handle damages expeditiously in the rare case they occur. The option you had selected was to take a policy with a 3rd party insurance company who specialized in coverage for individual high value items. I assisted with the claim immediately once it was reported. Respectfully, Matt

How did it go? I can't rate this company since I did not use their services. I was under the impression from the Angie's List ad that the Moving Service was $100 and I would receive $50 OFF $100 of local moving service: "West Side Movers Inc, a highly rated service provider on Angie's List, is offering $100 worth of local moving services for only $50, saving Angie's List members 50%!" I decide not to go with this company because of the following reasons: 1) The ad was not detail enough and did not explain what "$100" includes on a moving service. 2) The ad did not say "cost and price may change". 3) The ad did not say "limitations and other charges are subject to apply". I knew that the $50 to move seem to good but let' see what the company had to offer. I was only concerned with 8 heavy items that I could not move. When I order the items to be delivered to my house shipping was $400. So $50 seemed unrealistic but I was hopefully. Everything in my apartment would be wrap and ready to go by me, since I would be purchasing my own supplies for moving. I knew budgetary wise that to disassemble and reassemble a bed would be extra and I was ok with that charge. If I knew the estimate was going to be $600-$700 I would of chose a different moving company. Why pay more to move the heavy items, when first purchase shipping was less than their quote. I don't think that they are a bad company. Somewhere between Angie's List ad and what they include needs to be clear to consumers before purchase of a voucher. I understand they want to drive customers to their business, but an "unrealistic" price is false advertisement. By all means put in the ad, that other cost may incur which will raise the total cost of the moving. To move 40-50 mins away from my current location is not far, and I only want a few items moved. So I don't have an overall view just know this is not how you do business.

Thank you for considering our service and asking us to visit your apartment for an onsite estimate to assess the total cost for your guaranteed price quote. I understand how this coupon may have been confusing to you and I have reached out to Angie's List change the verbiage so that it is clear. To clarify, the $100 Off of Local Moving service implies just that. An estimate is required in order to know what the move would cost. Good luck with your upcoming move. Best, Matt

They have the worst customer service and service overall. First of all they charged me a lot more money than the original estimate. Also in order to get a "discount" I had to pay in cash. Then once I started unpacking I realized a bunch of my boxes where missing. I immediately called them and their answer was that they were going to check on it and come back to me, which by the way, never happened. I have been following up with them since my moving day (almost a month now) and their answer is always the same but they never follow up. I spent so much more and lost so many things in the moving it makes me very upset that they don't even care enough for their customers to follow up and try to help.

Dear Member, Sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with our service. We invite you to view our other positive reviews that we have earned on Angie’s List over the years. At no point during your move into storage, during storage, or during your move out of storage were concerns of missing items or damages brought to our attention. In fact, all Bill of Lading’s and Inventory Sheets were signed upon final delivery indicating items were received, and in proper condition. Our movers take great care in packing and handling fragile items to ensure damages are not incurred. And, we do offer different levels of insurance to cover legitimate claims. Furthermore, the actual fees were within the estimate that was agreed upon when retaining our services. Matt Fiore, President

They arrived on time, and competed the move-out very efficiently. We arranged to meet them in Norwalk, CT to drop off the furniture pieces for donation. They were an hour and a half late for that location. Efforts to reach them were not successful, either directly (to the driver's cell phone) or through their office. Following that, they delivered the rest to Westport. Nothing was broken or lost. The only other negative in an otherwise excellent experience was the driver stating up front that they expected--even required--a 20% tip. I always tip movers, although not usually 20%. I have never been told by anyone that a tip is required. I did tip them at the end of the job, about 15%, which is what I usually do.

Dear Customer I personally apologize for your experience regarding tipping. It is our company policy that tipping is appreciated but certainly not required and our men are instructed not to mention tipping unless asked by the customer. Traveling by truck definitely takes longer by car because we cannot take the parkways. Thank you for recognizing the ultimately positive experience you had with the moving job done. This is a mixed review. While they didn't break any of our belongings (large mirror, antique sewing machine, dishes, glasses) and it is a reliable business with a real office and live people answering the phone, there were multiple problems. The individual workers were mostly nice and professional but you can't help but feel that you were "taken." On the outbound trip, with 3 crew members, only 1 showed up on time. After they packed up the truck, they disappeared for over 2.5 hours between my apt and the storage facility just 100 blocks uptown (supposedly for "lunch") and could not be contacted. It took a lot of negotiation not to be charged for that time. Head of crew was very aggressive and unpleasant. On the return trip several months later, showed up 30 min late and forgot to bring the 10 ft ramp needed for my building (despite fact that I had preordered it which they acknowledged I had correctly done). It took 90 minutes waiting time for them to obtain the ramp (again, they tried to charge me for this time). One of the crew scratched our newly refinished wood floor when assembling a simple bed. The office agreed to compromise by removing 2 bookcases for me. However they just left one of them in our building's basement so they didn't keep their end of the bargain. Very aggressive and unprofessional about demanding tips despite mediocre service. Not sure you can get anything better in NYC however. $1300 each way not including tips

Dear Member; I just read your mixed review that was posted today about your experience of a job we did for you seven months ago.I wish you had given us this feedback sooner since providing quality service is of the utmost importance to me. This is a small family owned and operated moving company started by my late husband in 1972. I now run the company with my son. Anyway, thank you for acknowledging that we are a 'reliable business with an real office with real people answering the phone.'. I looked into this situation and spoke to your crew chief. Since seven months had elapsed he only vaguely remembered the specifics of the job. He did recall the issue with the ramp which was a miscommunication on our part, as the truck assigned to your job did not have one. We ultimately took hours off the job because it took time to secure a ramp. I understand that moving and having a renovation is very stressful and know that it would have helped, had your move gone seamlessly. I apologized that we may have added to the stress. I hope that by now you are enjoying your renovated apartment. Best regards,, Joanne Fiore, owner Joanne

Actually, it didn’t turn out very well. They kind of told me how much I should tip them. They said just so you know this is how much people usually tip us. It was really awkward. They were nice to let me ride in the van moving from Brooklyn to New Jersey. When I was riding in the van they yelled and told me people usually tip them this much. It made me feel uncomfortable and I wouldn’t go back to them. It was a big deal purchase. They quoted me $800 or so and then I ended up paying $1000. It was usually 10 percent that I was supposed to tip them. Moving in New York is really, really expensive. Moving from Brooklyn to New Jersey is going rate. Usually they offer like $1000. They did do a good job and didn’t damage my stuff. They didn’t really do anything extra for me and then they also told me awkwardly to tip. They were a good price. Dealing with the company and actually scheduling was great. It was easy. There was a guy that kept calling me to make sure that I had everything. They checked up on me. They were very responsive.

Dear Member Thank you for rating us 'A' for Price, Responsiveness and Punctuality and saying that we did do a good job and and all your items arrived in your new home without damage. I am so sorry that you were told what to tip by the foreman, as this is against company policy. To clarify, our policy regarding tipping is that-- it is appreciated but not mandatory--it is up to the customer's discretion. Our movers have been instructed to only discuss tips if the customer asks about it. I can fully understand how uncomfortable this discussion may have been. I am sorry that I am just being made aware of your experience five months after the fact. I will speak to the foreman to make sure this never happens again. He happens to be a very excellent mover--but this is unacceptable. My sincere apologies. If you have the need to move again and would give us another chance, please call myself, Joanne or my son Matt and speak to us directly. I would highly recommend West Side Movers. I have a friend who just sold her apartment and moved. I recommended them to her. This is the first company I have ever used that I did not have a page full of problems when I was done. The first move was from Brooklyn to Manhattan. And then I sold my apartment in Manhattan, had about 3 to 4 months, and put my stuff in storage. Their work ethic is fantastic. They were very careful, and considerate of things and me. I just see extraordinary care in their field. They are really good, very competitive, worth the cheapest, and the most expensive.
Description of Work: I have been in my apartment now for 3 years and moved me 3 times for the last 15 years. They packed, put the storage for me, and delivered it. They also did a lot of packing for me of my fragile things and my artwork.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. They were great. I didn't pay any additional. They took very much care. They were careful and very professional. Even though it was a short move, they insisted on packing the whole thing. I didn't want to pay for that much packing but they insisted because of their insurance and their quality, that they had to pack and unpack everything to prevent scratches. My tenants and I were surprised. I wasn't there and my tenants texted me and said that they did such a good job and they were so cute. I have used them again.

The moving team was excellent -- the guys were professional and very nice. Unfortunately, I received a quote from the office of $700, but when it came time to settle the bill at the end of the move, another $400 was tacked onto the price that had been quoted. On top of that, the lead mover told me that a 20% gratuity was expected. I didn't have the cash and I didn't have enough in checking to cover it all, so it had to go on my credit card. I've read about other movers doing this kind of thing, but I expected to pay the amount I was quoted since this company was highly rated on Angie's List. All-in-all, it was a very professional crew, but you should expect to see more dollars added to your total. There was a question on Angie's List for this evaluation that said, "Would you use this provider again?" AL did not give a "maybe" response as a choice, so I said "Yes." However, my actual answer is only maybe. I will probably do my own move next time with a rental truck.

Dear Member, Thank you for highlighting your positive experience with the performance of our moving team for your recent move from NYC to NJ. When providing estimates over the phone we state our hourly rates, prices for boxes, and fees for any additional services required (ex. disassembly and reassembly, or piano). Our estimate's over the phone are based on the accuracy of information dictated to us regarding furniture items, dimensions, number of boxes, packing (if needed) and building conditions. The actual cost may differ based on the reality of these circumstances yet our rates, box prices and fees for additional services remain unchanged on moving day. For a binding estimate with a 'max cost' we advise scheduling an appointment for an onsite quote. Thank you for using our services. Wishing you all the best in your new home. Sincerely, Matt Fiore, President

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. It was okay. They came to the apartment to see what was there. The foreman explained that the tip should go to him and it should be 20 percent. They took a 20 minute break. They unloaded and brought things upstairs. We went back and forth a little bit because they were saying the time should be 5 1/2 hours and it was more like 5 hours and 15 minutes. I gave them the coupon and they said I had to tell them beforehand and I said that I did. I gave him the tip and payment because the other gentleman were in the van.

Dear Customer; Thank you for giving our company an overall rating of A. I would like to clarify our tipping policy. Tips are appreciated but totally voluntary. It is customary to show appreciation when a job is well done. Industry standard is usually 15% to 20% of the labor. Whatever you decide to give is given to the crew chief, who distributes the amount equally among the team. We instruct our men only to mention tips if asked. I will review that policy with my staff. We wish you the best of luck in your new home. Regards, Joanne Fiore, Owner

Mike Espinosa prepared an estimate to move me from Brooklyn to Jersey City. Because of a minor oversight Mike was unable to send me the quote or contact me. I did not know the circumstances and wrote a negative review because nobody got back to me. When Mike came to my home to prepare the quote we had a pleasant half hour or so. He's a friendly and warm person and we chatted freely. Perhaps that was a distraction and Mike forgot to get my contact information. Whoever I originally talked to on the phone didn't collect it either. So there's a very minor error that produced significant consequences; in this case an unsatisfied could-be customer and a bad review on Angie's List. I called Mike again and left my contact info. Mike sent me the quote as promised. I don't believe my experience with not having the quote sent to me is any reason to conclude that this vendor is not a good one. I make errors like that too and I don't think it indicated my work is substandard. I would give this vendor another opportunity to quote me work if the circumstance arrives.

Dear Member, Thank you for your interest in our services. I think you may have the wrong company as I do not see your name or address in our schedule for 10/1/13. Angie’s List will be in contact soon to assist you with leaving a review for the correct company. In the meantime, if you would like an estimate please contact us directly and I am happy to assist with providing an onsite estimate. Best, Matt Fiore, owner

I'm only reviewing responsiveness which has been very bad so far as they have not replied to my estimate request. Will update review if they ever respond.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate 4 days ago. I still haven't heard from them.

Dear Customer; I am sorry you had that experience. I am so glad that you wrote a comment on Angie's so we could rectify the situation. I immediately spoke to the people in the office, who said that they had tried to contact you to ask further questions about your move. They were unable to contact you. This morning we were able to reach you and Michael Espinoza, our estimator and I (Joanne Fiore--owner) drove out to Jersey City to see you. Thank you for walking us through your home today. We enjoyed meeting you and your two adorable little boys. Best regards, Joanne Fiore, Owner

I have moved a lot over the years, both nationally and internationally. Mr. Fiore's company is truly exceptional. They flawlessly performed what I can only describe as a beastly amount of work, on schedule, charging less than the estimate and less than the guaranteed maximum. Nothing was broken, nothing was damaged. Mr. Espinoza came to my house; he is a very pleasant and professional gentlemen who went through the house, asked all the relevant questions, checked every closet, checked the amount of silverware, stemware, pottery, clothing we had. Clearly not his first rodeo. The estimate was provided when promised. I received competing bids from West Side Movers, FlatRate.com, Moving Man and Redline Movers, all based on their reviews. Redline was cheaper, Flatrate was comparable but West Side had a winning element: a guaranteed maximum cost, no questions asked. Basically, even Flatrate has some dubious language in their "flat rate" bid that, in effect, allows them to charge more if the need arises. West Side had an unconditional guarantee that the total cost would not have exceeded a predetermined amount (which was about 15% more than the estimate). That gave me peace of mind that I would not to the penny what my maximum outlay would have been. Insurance certificates were delivered on time and the night before Mr. Fiore called me to make sure I did not have any questions or concerns. A very nice touch! At the scheduled time, on the dot, the crew showed up. 8 men, two huge trucks. They immediately started breezing through my apartment, packing everything in site. I was asked to identify things I did not want to have put in boxes and throughout the day I marked the boxes to show where they needed to go in the new house, because different items had to go on different floors. The crew was superb. Professional, indefatigable; they started working as soon as they got into the apartment and never stopped until the lunch brake. After the first 4 1/2 hours, already a lot of work had been done. I had a lot of stemware, wine bottles; everything was carefully packed; nothing broke. On the morning of the second day, the whole apartment was packed. Mr. Fiore has an amazing group of people. Employees who were freed from other job came to lend a helping hand, thus increasing the number of people. I was relaxed - remember, I had a maximum guaranteed amount. On the way out, we hit a snag with the couch. After some inventive maneuvering, which required a substantial amount of strength, skill and ingenuity, the crew was able to fit the couch into the elevator. The apartment was left spotless, without a single mark on the wall. Off we where to the new house. These poor men - they started carrying boxes and boxes of books, huge pieces of furniture and other items up one, two and three flights of stairs to the study or down to the basement. They looked like old-time sherpas. An incredible feat of strength and endurance. Except for a couple of stray boxes, everything ended up where it was supposed to go, in the right room on the correct floor. Beds and other immediately necessary items were put back together to make us ready to sleep that night. At the end of the job I was presented with a bill that was $500 less than the estimate!! So cheaper than the competitors, and well within the guaranteed amount. I gladly paid more than the 20% suggested tip. The job was done flawlessly, nothing was broken, nothing was damaged, the paint was not scuffed, the crew was incredibly professional, courteous and with a good spirit. If I ever have to move again - and I pray I won't have to - I will definitely use this company again.
