Description of Work: Pleasant, professional. I thought I'd receive confirmation the night before that the job was taking place, but instead the workman called to let me know he was on his way. Not that big a deal; I got the impression they need administrative help with scheduling. I had tiling and the repair of a door done. I had them replace plastic strip guard on glass shower door, which was executed perfectly. I found the other work adequate, edging towards sloppy.

Description of Work: the communication from this vendor started fine with a reply email and then they stopped responding. i had to send 2 emails and call twice before i got an email reply back. not once did they apologize for the delay but rather explain to me how busy they are and it would be easier to respond if they had my address. i sent my address and never heard from them again. complete lack of follow up.

Description of Work: These guys walk on water, as far as I'm concerned! | |The head of the company, Kevin Roche, came out twice to look at the work that needed to be done to repair a leaky bathroom floor in my NYC co-op apartment. He was amazing at sizing up the situation, coming up with a reasonably priced way of diagnosing and dealing with the problems and possible problems, in getting the necessary paperwork quickly through my co-op's managing agent, which is no small feat to begin with in NYC! I had others come out to look at my floor, but no one would deal with a small complicated job or my co-op's managing agent's paperwork. | |Then Kevin assigned his long-time foreman, Gene, to do the work, who also came out to make sure he understood what the situation was the day before he started working. As unexpected problems came up along the way, Gene and Kevin just fixed them, provided wonderful advice on how to solve, and kept the job moving along. This included completely rebuilding and waterproofing my bathroom floor from the floorboards on up (including old holes in the floorboards), discovering a rusted connector pipe in the shower stopper plumbing (which had to be replaced and saved me the problem of having to rip everything up in a few months if it had not been fixed, when it would eventually break), replacing the vanity and building a beautiful new wooden shelf above my toilet, and doing caulking in the shower. | |Gene was so careful in measuring every piece of tile and support that went in, as well as in ensuring that the toilet and sink could go back at the right levels, that I now have a completely flat, even, solidly waterproof, and beautiful bathroom floor for the first time ever. I can't stop looking at how nice it looks and feels! | |They and their work are so professional, patient and kind. And this makes them so trustworthy that I immediately felt comfortable handing over my apt. keys to Gene, which made the work easier for everyone. He was very quiet coming and going, and always cleaned up at the end of each day. Since I have a small NYC apt, this really made a challenging situation so much easier to deal with. | |It was just a pleasure dealing with such wonderful human beings, and my longstanding bathroom floor problems have finally been solved! I can't recommend Space Carpenter enough!

Matthew showed up promptly, understood everything that needed to be done to fix the problems (and more). He was very meticulous and did a terrific job. Everything works perfectly now. He communicated clearly just what he was going to do. We've used Space Carpenter's services once before and continue to be very happy with their competence, professionalism, courtesy, and responsiveness.
Description of Work: Various tasks: fixed an accordion-type closet door that was coming loose, a pull-out drawer that didn't close properly and was off-center, a footstool that was coming apart, a refrigerator door that didn't always close properly.

+ 5 moreThis is my second time using Space Carpenter. The first was for a major renovation of my apartment, the second was for minor work that needed to be done. I can't say enough nice things about Space Carpenter. Kevin Rocine is professional, competent, honest and has integrity. While he isn't the cheapest of the contractors out there, he is well worth the price as everything he does is done in a high quality way with personal attention. Everyone that Kevin has working on his team is wonderful. They are not just competent and capable, each of them are kind, accommodating, sensitive to your schedules and needs. They are reliable and honest. What more could you ask? The major renovation was brilliant and came in on time and on budget. All these years later, the work has held up and people still remark at the quality of the work and the design. Kevin is a genius when it comes to thinking about how to best use space. The smaller job that Space Carpenter did recently, was done with the same care, concern, attention to detail and professionalism as the bigger job years ago - a real tribute to Kevin's dedication to excellence. It's so nice to get great service, with professional and high quality results -- all being done by incredibly nice people. Thanks Space Carpenter - I will call you next time I need more work done!

This was a job others had turned down because it was "too small" and, I suspect, the matching of color and working around challenges such as an existing granite counter top that extended past the cabinets themselves promised headaches. I knew from the beginning that I would pay a premium price. My only complaint is that the work took longer than initially estimated. Each time I received an explanation for the delay: subcontractors who disappointed.
Description of Work: Space Carpenters added kitchen cabinets and a refrigerator surround. They had to match my existing maple cabinets and a somewhat unusual door pattern.

+ 7 moreI interviewed a number of contractors to finish the job and choose Kevin because I was impressed with his precision and honesty and what appeared to be an excellent eye for detail. At first I thought there was just the last 20% of the job that needed to be completed but after a thorough inspection by Kevin, it was clear that the cabinets and counter-top had been installed incorrectly and the electricity had been poorly wired. Kevin was very honest with me about what needed to be done and gave me options about the extent of "repair" he could do for me. He told me that it was difficult to come after/fix another contractor's work and finish it; that he did not know what they would find once they dug deeper and, thus, indicated he could not estimate the job. He charted me for time and materials. He was upfront with his hourly rate and that of his team. He said he would try to keep his time (the most expensive) to a minimum to make it more affordable. In the end, there were few surprises. The amount came in around what he very roughly estimated in terms of hours and his team (especially Gene and John) were top=notch. The electricians that he uses, although not cheap, were top-notch. They were very responsive to my concerns about cost and did just what they needed to do to ensure that the job was up to code and that the wiring was correct. All of Kevin's workers arrived on time, were incredibly efficient, perfectionists and just all around nice guys. I love the kitchen and will be forever grateful for their work "saving" what could have been a nightmare experience with an unethical contractor (my previous contractor). I have since called Kevin to do another job--a much, much smaller one--and again am pleased with the results. I will be using him often for my future contracting and renovation needs.
Description of Work: Kevin and his amazing team completed an unfinished (slightly botched) kitchen renovation that a previous contractor had abandoned. This involved finishing and repairing the cabinet installation, ordering and installing the backsplash, painting and extensive electrical work.

+ 11 moreI asked Kevin to come in to a complicated job in which we were determined to use every inch of our kitchen area. I produced my own drawings; but although I am a designer, I'm not an architect. Kevin helped me interpret these drawings into something that could be built. He assisted me in understanding tolerances and actual construction methods to achieve the space and effect we wanted in the kitchen. He produced his own drawings for the cabinetry after demolition, electrical installation, and plumbing so that we could utilize every bit of space. He came for multiple meetings, was always on time, and helped in containing the cost of the project, and had very constructive ideas to help achieve the look we wanted. His crew was never invasive in the 10 unit Victorian building we live in, and kept the work as clean as is possible on these kinds of jobs. His subcontractors were extremely good and very accurate in the timing of the work. He took extra time in sampling the techniques that I wanted to use in the hand painted finish on the cabinetry. There was work that extended into adjoining parts of the apartment which was done with the minimal invasiveness, and where there were problems, corrected them very quickly. Work like this is collaborative, and he was supportive and helped out every step of the way. The real test is how this functions. It is better than we hoped for, and has been working in ways we never imagined. The finishes are holding up, and we are happy every time we are in the space.
Description of Work: Space Carpenter LLC/Kevin Rocine and crew reconstructed a kitchen from walls up. This work included re plumbing, re wiring, installing an HVAC system in three separate areas in the apartment, laying a new floor and re tiling it, constructing and installing new cabinetry, adding an area for a pantry, a washer/dryer and a large marble counter top. The backsplash was particularly detailed, and his crew did an excellent job of keeping the lines clean and corners neat. Although the work took longer than expected, it is the best that one could hope for. There was a constant attention to detail, and he took extra care that every inch of space was accounted for.

He has a good eye for the way things fit together and is realistic about what can and can't be done. Isaac, his carpenter, is meticulous and exacting in his work and takes special care in everything he touches. He also is especially adept at planning how things will fit, especially when they seem as if they won't.
Description of Work: Space Carpenter performed an extensive partial renovation of my 1899 townhome in Washington Heights. They added a brand new bathroom, expanded a half-bath into a full bath, moved a column of cabinetry in the kitchen from one location to another, and they added a separation wall and door with frame to the fourth floor landing, creating a private entrance. They did all of the carpentry, tiling, and cabinetry and subcontracted the plumbing, electrician, and masonry.

Description of Work: Space Carpenter did a magnificent job in my home.They are courteous, kind, thorough, professional and extremely efficient.They recessed my television into the wall.Essentially a large hole was made in the wall. They did this with little disruption and the utmost care to my home and family.A shelf unit was built to house my cable box and DVD player and the wires are behind the wall.It looks absolutely beautiful and flawless. Truly perfect.I had other small bits done around the apartment which were all done to perfection.I have other carpentry work planned for the near future and there is no doubt that Space Carpenter will be the one to do the work.I highly recommend Space Carpenter.It is a fabulous, competent small company who absolutely take pride in their work.These days that is not so easy to find.

At every stage of the work Kevin Rocine and his excellent crew took great care to analyze the situation, confer with the owners and give a range of options and prices. Once a course of action had been decided on, Space Carpenters executed the work with a great deal of skill and, above all, care. We were impressed with their professionalism, integrity and thoughtfulness. We have since used Space Carpenters to remove a garden fence and replace it with trellis. Again, a very satisfactory experience. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Made extensive renovations to one floor of our house including removal of old floor, laying a concrete base and relaying a new floor. Also removing sheetrock from walls, replacing rotted studs, fixing new sheetrock and making good. Pointing exterior stonework.
