 + 0 moreThe guy was extremely nice and courteous. He came a little late, though. The work done by him on the bathroom fixture was not very satisfactory. We have to call him shortly and get it fixed again. The work was not?t done satisfactorily. So, we are going to give him another chance to complete the work. We?ll use him again for any future project, only if he can complete this current project satisfactorily. I would like to know if the money spent is for the chandelier or for work that was done or both. We have not been able to speak with them to find out what the charges are for after several attempts. We were told that the fixtures themselves have problems and they were going to look into getting us a new fixture. The manager said that I will have my lighting guy look into this. I have called the original manufacturer and found that they do have replacement parts so I am not sure why it is taking them so long to get this information back to us. I am able to order the parts myself however I am not inclined to use Altman Electric to do the installation for us. I would not recommend them.
Description of Work: We are currently using Altman Electric. He did the work, a week ago. He fixed a problem with the chandelier. He did not repair the bathroom fixture. They said they would find parts to fix this. I sent him them specs and have not heard anything from him. I have called and left messages, voice mails and emails several times, and have not had any response from them.

 + 0 moreI could not turn the light in my bathroom without it blinking and crackling. The light sensor in my backyard would only keep the light on for 10 minutes rather than from dust to dawn. Both these problems were supposed to have been fixed last month when I hired another electric company. I e-mailed Altman on Friday morning and they called me Friday afternoon. I was able to get an appointment Monday afternoon. The electrician they sent was extremely professional and obviously knew what he was doing. He completed the job in good time, was very neat and also gave us some tips on how to save money on our electrical bills. I think I've found the electrical company that will be doing ALL my future electrical work.
Description of Work: Repaired a light socket in my bathroom and restored outdoor light sensor in my backyard.

 + 0 moreThe electrician was nice and professional. He worked quickly but carefully. He showed me what the problem was, had the necessary parts in his car, and fixed it. He did everything in 25 minutes. It was great. He also looked at my garbage disposal and fixed that. I strongly recommend this company. When I called to make the appointment the person who answered was very professional. I told her I had to leave for work by a certain time and she said that would not be a problem and she was right. They gave me a price quote over the phone which was accurate and they gave me an Angie's List discount.

 + 0 moreAltman sent 2 men, who arrived on time, and in less than 1 1/2 had performed all the work. They were very professional, and I would most certainly use them again. They were 1/5th of the price that I received from other electricians I had quote, before I found Angie's List.
Description of Work: Altman installed 2 sconces, and put together and hung a very complicated ceiling chandelier from my 20+ ft. ceiling.

 + -1 moreIt didn't go. No answer to my email. No message taken on either of my calls--hung up too quickly.
Description of Work: I rented a car for business and while I was in NJ bought two ceiling fans. It turned out the installer from that store would not come to Manhattan as not licensed. I am no installer and my husband is disabled. I asked around and searched the Web and joined Angie's list precisely to look for an electrician. I loved Altman's Web site and references. It looked like they did a nice job on small jobs as well as large where reports on some others were only big contractor jobs. I went through Angie's and wrote an email to their "contact us" telling them what we needed and asking them to call. I called on a Saturday to see why I hadn't heard and the woman who answered kind of laughed when she heard I had sent the message late at night when they were closed, and said they were also closed on weekends so I needed to wait to hear from them until the next week. She hung up before taking my name or number assuming the email was in the queue somewhere. I called again after work another couple of weeks later and got a woman who said they were closed for the day and I needed to call back the next day. She did not take a message even when I told her that I had sent an email and called and had been waiting a long time. Not only does the poor follow through bother me, but the 24/7 nature of their coverage is featured on their Web site.

 + 0 morePeter came over to give us an estimate and all the paperwork was done promptly (The office staff is very helpful and polite). The electricians showed up on time on the appointed day and it took approx 2 days to install new wiring (we had them dig channels in the wall/ceiling) and switches. After all the walls/ceilings were patched and painted, the electrician finally showed up (3 hours late and after many calls to the office!) to install the new ceiling fixtures.
Description of Work: Master bedroom, Guest bedroom, Living room & Dining room: Furnish & install new skylark dimmer switch, furnish & install new wiring from switch to feed new ceiling outlet, install new ceiling fixture.

 + 1 moreI chose this company because of all of the good ratings on Angie's List. I gave them a call and they came to my house to give me an estimate. The cost was reasonable. They did the work quickly and neatly. They worked with my ideas and I like the results.
Description of Work: I had them install a new ceiling fan and 6 recessed lights. They had to put in a new breaker in the panel.

 + -1 moreThe company was good in that they called back quickly and completed the insurance requirements without a hitch, as well as scheduled an appointment for the same week in which I called. The electrician had to use wire mold to do the work, as to do otherwise would have created too much damage to the wall. I assumed this meant it would take less time, and thus be less expensive, since we were only moving the outlet approximately 8 feet. The wire mold was not installed that nicely--there was still a gap at the corner, and he didn't seem to have the right piece to conceal the wires where they entered the wall again, using a very unattractive end cap in a different finish from the rest of the wire mold. It took almost 3 hours, and the price they charged for the wire mold and wire was exorbitant--over $100 for a few pieces of plastic and a few feet of wire. He also banged and scraped the floor while doing the work. He was a nice guy, and professional enough, but nothing great, and I thought it was expensive. In the future I would try and buy any required fixtures ahead of time, as this would save money.
Description of Work: I needed an outlet moved to a new location approximately 8 feet from the existing outlet. The electrician also moved the cable tv and phone line, and removed a ceiling fixture that was to be in the way of some cabinets to be installed.

 + -1 moreI had them give me an estimate. One was higher than the other one. I only had to pay the low estimate. I was glad that they were able to give me an outlet below the cabinet and fish the cord of the microwave up into the upper cabinet. I had removed my nice glassware so they had access to the cabinet. They cleaned up any mess and replaced my glassware for me. The final price was lower than the estimate.
Description of Work: I had them install an outlet for a microwave. I wanted it done without ripping my wall up. They did it.

 + 0 moreAltman repaired a ceiling light fixture for us. After they left, we noticed that it still went off mysteriously from time to time. When we phoned them, they sent someone the very next day to replace the transformer at no charge. They also took a a look at several lights in our backyard and said all we needed to do was clean off the light sensors. We also had a mixer that our dog had chewed through the cord. The electrician could have charged us more by doing the repair but said it was very simply and gave us a few pointers so we could do it ourselves. We were very pleased with their timeliness, honesty and willing to promptly return to fix the light again. We'll use them again.

 + 1 moreThey are amazing! Got an original estimate of $485 from electricians used by super in building. When I told them O.K., didn't hear from them for 2 weeks. Found Altman's on Angie's. Called. Peter came next morning exactly when he said, gave me an estimate of about $360. They came the next day, did a great job, and total bill with parts, labor and tax, was $312! Plate was not sitting exactly right on wall, so Peter said he'd come back to look at it. Came back, and said he'd replace it with a lower one, which should fix problem. Also showed him an AC outlet which was sitting the wrong way on the wall, making it difficult to get the plug in. He said "no problem", and will reverse it when he puts new plate in. I'd be surprised if he'll even charge me for that. Told my super to begin using Altman's for the work in the building. A REAL NON N.Y. STORY!!
Description of Work: Separated the exhaust and fan switch in the bathroom, so that the fan did not go on automatically when light was on. Needed to re-run wires from both light and fan to new two switch plate in the wall. Took about 11/2 hours.

 + 0 moreI am new to the area, and was nervous about finding a good electrician that I could trust. I spoke with 4-5 other electricians, and did not get that "feeling of comfort and trust" that I was looking for. I finally joined Angie's List and found Altman Electric. I liked that they were family owned, and knew what was needed in terms of permits and proof of insurance in Manhattan. They were very courteous. The estimator was detailed, and even sketched what we talked about. The electrician that performed the work was patient, courteous and knowledgeable. He even cleaned up after he finished, and helped me to dispose of the huge wooden crates the chandeliers were shipped in! He was mindful of keeping the damage to the drywall (necessary for wiring) to a minimum. I was VERY pleased!
Description of Work: Replace one (1) light fixture with a Crystal Chandelier, Install (1) Crystal Chandelier completely, including switch and wiring, Install three (3) library lights in a bookcase, add two (2) outlets.

 + 0 moreOur lights weren't working after trying to replace the bulbs and they discovered we needed new fixtures which I had to go and buy. Once I had the new fixtures a few days later, they gave me an appointment 1-2 days after I called. They were reliable and on time, without me needing to have a appointment "window". I asked for them to come around 11am and they did and had no problem with that. I get enough waiting in all morning or afternoon from the phone and cable company, so it was welcomed to have an actual real-time appointment. They were fast and efficient and the new lights worked fine, but I had to do a little clean up after they left. I am in two minds about having to buy the fixtures myself. On one hand it was okay because a lot of companies will get the fixtures for you but mark it up again even higher, on the other hand, it takes up my time to have to go and buy it myself.

 + -1 moreThe work, when it was done, was quite good. Unfortunately, the person did not show up at the appointment, because the "dispatcher put the ticket in the wrong tray." Mistakes happen, and a new person was sent out as soon as possible, the very next morning. The work was excellent, clean, and inexpensive.
