Beware- they do not stand by their product At first we noticed our kitchen floor was not perfectly even. Even though it was only 1-2 mm difference, our feet catch on the non-uniform edges. Irritating, but livable. Then came the bathroom disaster. About 1-2 months after we moved in, we noticed that our bathroom tile (the least expensive of the tiles- a simple white glazed rectangle tile) started cracking the way a coffee cup's glazing would crack and chip. I cut my hand on a tile as I cleaned it. Now, essentially every tile in the bathroom on every wall is cracking. At first, we felt it was an installation error- grout too thick, inadequate drying, etc. Nemo was very receptive and sent out their field rep, a nice man, who brought to our attention that there was an anti-fracture membrane, specifically designed to prevent tiles from fracturing, was installed under our tile. He agreed it was unlikely an installation issue, we had all the appropriate installation features, but the tile chipped anyway. To me, that points to a manufacturing error. To them, the best they could offer is our 53 year old building shifted (which would really be torque to account for 4 walls). Also, if this was the case, our other bathroom should be cracking as well. (Of note, I just noted one tile is cracked in the other bathroom so the story could get worse.) To this he said he can't help. The tile comes from somewhere else and he could not speak to the quality control of this product. Since he could not speak for the manufacturers or in behalf of them, and really could not help our situation in any way. To repair the bathroom, all tile will need to be removed and reinstalled. It is disheartening that my apartment will need to be torn up once again to repair this. He told us we can send a sample for analysis once we do this, but currently they assume no responsibility. It was unclear what potential benefit the analysis would bring. Nemo represents themselves as a high end, high quality tile company. I have expectations that a quality company will do whatever it takes to make sure their customers are satisfied with their product. This makes me want to do business with them again even if something goes wrong with their product. I did not find this to be the case with Nemo. Currently, we have to swallow the cost of the entire bathroom reinstallation. Obviously, we will not be purchasing Nemo tile for the reinstallation. I would recommend to avoid this company since you have no control over quality, nor do they.
Description of Work: Question the Quality Before Buying Nemo tile as a company is very polished looking. You think you are getting a good product because you free samples and the sale people are extremely responsive. The products are beautiful too, without a doubt. In doing our homework, the only thing we could find was reviews about long shipping times of products not in stock. We ordered tile for the walls and floor in two bathrooms, tiles for the floor and backsplash in the kitchen and tile for entry way. In total we purchased 8 different tiles. Only the glass tile came with installation instructions of "install with anti-fracture membrane". I have seen other companies provide detailed installation instructions. Nemo does not. We did need one extra case to finish the bathroom and it was not in stock, so we had to wait for that to delivered... the reviews were true, it took a very, very, very long time. After installation, our floor tiles were not uniform in depth and our bathroom tiles in one bathroom are fracturing.

Response from NEMO TILE CO
I met with [member name removed] on January 23rd, 2013 at their 8th floor apt in NYC. He preceded to show me their bathroom which had our 4x13 odissea bianco tile on the wall and you could clearly see that there were numerous hairline cracks in the tiles over several areas in the bathroom. Having seen this situation before, I felt that the cracks were caused from movement of the walls that create stress and or cracks that form in the walls themselves and permeate through the tile. This is common in high rises in NYC. I asked if he used a crack suppression membrane and he said he used a waterproof membrane that was required by the condo association. The product he used was #9235 waterproof membrane from Laticrete (not purchased from Nemo tile) which also acts as a crack suppression when used with a coordinating mesh. He had pictures of the product when it was being installed but I could not tell if the mesh was used. He understood my explanation but he also wanted to know why the other bathroom which was right next to it and shared a wall was not showing any cracks. I told him that it was not receiving the same amount of stress as the other bathroom walls. His next question was about the tiles themselves. He questioned whether one was of higher quality than the other and I assured him that both are of high quality and we have had no quality issue with either products in the past. His main concern at this point was that he really liked the tile and wanted to the replace the tile with the same product but wanted my assurance that it would not happen again. I told him I would speak to the Laticrete representative and get back to him. I spoke to the Laticrete rep for NYC and he said to me the only way to really help him having not seen the actual installation would be for us to be there when they took the old tile out and see how it was installed from the studs/walls out and he would be able to give him the best professional advice he could. He also said that there is no way of guaranteeing 100% that it would not happen again, but he would be able to suggest the best application for his walls. Approximately two weeks after our meeting at his apartment, I passed this information on to [member name removed]. He decided that he would take us up on the offer. I asked him to give me a week notice before he started so that the rep from Laticrete could be there and he would not have any conflicts with the date. I have not heard back from [member name removed] since and was never asked for any compensation for tile or labor. I have never walked away from this or any other job complaint. I am willing to give my time as well as the rep from Laticrete to help as much as we can. My offer still stands. On a final note, I see now from their posting that one of the tiles has a crack in the other bathroom. These are two different tiles. As I stated before this is not a problem with the tile but with the movement and stress of the tile itself. We at Nemo Tile have and will always stand behind all of our products.
