A 73-foot live pine tree snapped at a height of eight feet, leaving 65 feet of tree that fell on my garage roof during a windstorm on 1/13/12 at 3:15PM. It was a terrifying experience for my family and an emotionally draining experience working with the insurance company. I got a strong positive reference for the contractor from a neighbor, who inspected the damage two business days after I called. My interaction with him left me feeling confident that everything would work out fine. The contractor had made seven inspections for estimates earlier in the day before he got to me, so I wasn't surprised that it took three business days to give me his estimate. The estimate was ultimately judged reasonable by the insurance adjuster, as you will see below. I was very naive about the insured repair process and at first did not know the adjuster had low-balled me when he handed me a check, before the work had started. I thought it was the contractor whose prices were unreasonable, and that it was my job to hammer the contractor to come down to the adjuster’s offer. Ultimately, the contractor cut his price by more than 15%, but still came in 30% higher than the adjuster. Here’s the best part. The adjuster allowed me the full amount I paid to the contractor, saying he would have paid the full original estimate if the contractor had charged me that much. I was furious with the insurance agent. On principle, I sent the contractor another $375, including a tip for the workers. When I called the adjuster, he immediately allowed the additional $375 (I didn’t tell him it included a tip). My $4,875 cost includes the tip and extra payment to the contractor. Ultimately, I wound up with a solid connection with a reliable, honest and professional contractor. The work started exactly on time and was finished in one and one-half consecutive days. The employees were courteous and well supervised by a manager the whole time. The roof is beautiful. Plus, I now know a whole lot about insurance and home contracting.
