Description of Work: Kitchen Renovation Note: This should have been an “A” review” Once we decided to embark on the next big project, the search for a contractor began. We'd had less than pleasant experiences in the past, so we intended to be a bit more diligent this time. Among the prospective firms was Buena Vista Home Improvements, led by Javier Valencia. They had a growing track record, so we scheduled an interview. We immediately felt comfortable with Javier, and we were impressed by his aesthetic. He stood in the middle of the room, and stated that he wanted to improve everything he could see from that position. He submitted a bid that we found acceptable and we visited one of his work sites. The quality of the work, (an addition to a house), was impressive. We did our due diligence and once the permits were approved, we were off. Demo was swift, as was the framing (two load bearing walls were removed). The electrician, the plumber, and sheet rock guys also worked quickly, and with little or no delay. In fact, the only delays were cause by the inspectors. Initial inspections passed, walls were closed, and we got to the tile and cabinet phase. It should be noted that each tradesmen is indeed a craftsman. The tile work, sheet rock and painting, and cabinet work, (especially the crown molding), was well done. Every worker who worked on our home was incredibly polite and considerate. Each one clearly takes great pride in his work. In general, Buena Vista was responsive to any construction issues and changes, including custom drawer inserts. At the end, we did a punch list inspection with the contractors, and fixed any mishaps with the exceptions outlined below. Final inspections took some time to get done, the fault of the city, not BV. Any required fixes were done, and we are awaiting our CO (Note:We Are still waiting for our CO, months later). The only major issue we had during construction was poor communication. It took repeated requests to start getting information about who would come, and at what time. It is also advisable to forward design ideas and changes in writing, as Javier doesn’t write them down. Soon after construction had for the most part ended, three of the custom cabinet insert draws came apart from the cabinet, making them inoperable. When we inquired about the cabinet specs, and if we had gotten the right cabinets, we were informed, rather indignantly, that we were had, and that we had received high quality merchandise. If we had wanted something more, we should have chosen an option we weren't aware of (we were sent a brochure we hadn’t seen when we chose cabinets). The cabinetmaker returned and installed a fix to all of the cabinets to insure there would be no recurrence of the problem (fingers are crossed). We had also arranged to have holes in the sheet rock for pest inspection and for the outside light in front to be replaced (at further cost to us). The plumber also added a large hole in the family room ceiling to correct an inspection issue. As well, we had contracted for an additional outlet on the kitchen island. At this point, weeks after the final inspection, and two unanswered messages to Javier, we have holes in the family room ceiling, no front light, no second outlet, and we’ve hired someone to finish the job Buena Vista started. This is a rather inauspicious ending to a project that yielded such fine work.
