In a nutshell, I do believe there were areas that I might have been at fault - clearly my carpet is not in good enough condition to save - but my overall experience with this company and their unprofessionalism (except for Marvin the workman and his crew) has left me not wanting to ever deal with them again and to write this negative review.
Description of Work: I live in a one bedroom co-op that requires I have wall to wall carpeting so over the last 6+ years since it was installed the carpet has gotten lumps in places so I called several carpet places about getting my carpet re-stretched. After a few calls to other places I spoke to Mohabeer at Allen (on Monday) and explained that I was looking to get wall-to-wall carpet stretched in my entrance way into the main living space and a hallway (if time permitted, I also wanted my bedroom re-stretched). I was quoted $125/hour, and including the bedroom the job should be completed within 2 hours as long as I emptied out all of my belongings from my furniture (which is basically everything I own that is not hung-up in a closet) to allow the workmen to work quickly. At no point to Mohabeer suggest having someone first come look at the condition of my carpet, and me knowing nothing about carpeting, I gave my credit card information for a deposit of the first hour to get my appointment set up. This is where things went downhill...Mohabeer was then quick to get off the phone with me without setting up the appointment. I explained I didn't feel comfortable that I just handing over my credit card information without setting something but he told me I would be contacted by someone who does schedule. A few hours later I still hadn't heard from anyone so I called again and was put through to Ilene. She said she planned to call me on Thursday with a time for Friday. I proceeded to spend the remainder of that week emptying/moving everything I own into my kitchen, bathroom and even out of my apartment all together so the job can go quickly and smoothly. Friday rolls around and Marvin and his assistant arrived as scheduled but immediately after seeing the condition of my carpet they said they wouldn't be able to do it. The men then spent the next 20 minutes + showing me that as they stretch the carpet I would be left with large gaps at every doorway/closet/corner because the carpet was already cut to fit but now had over 6" of extra fabric which would shift all previous cut-outs to places where carpet needed to be. They did it in one area to show me and I was the one to say absolutely not. Marvin asked if Allen Carpets had come to look at it before scheduling the job and I explained they hadn't but I figured they knew what they were doing when a customer with no knowledge calls them. Marvin informed me I wouldn't be charged but called the store just to confirm before leaving me as a way to insure me and so I could hear what he was explaining to Mohabeer (my salesman) and Kenny (the location owner I believe). Marvin and his assistant were nothing but professional and I valued their honest expertise and that they didn't just do the job to get paid. After Marvin left I called Mohabeer again (I did not personal speak to him while the work crew was in my apartment) and I wanted to confirm that my credit card was not being charged, that they would dispose of my information, and my disapointment in the experience working with the company. Immediately Mohabeer was on the defense and wouldn't hear me out and as soon as I mentioned that I was a member of Angie's List and I would be writing a review to express my frustration and bad experience - he kept repeating that there was nothing bad about my experience - clearly he doesn't understand that moving all of your belongings for nothing is an extreemly frustrating thing. I also expressed my disapointment that as a professional, he never suggested sending someone over to look at the condition of the carpet to see if the job could even be done, or what my options are. I agreed with him that I did call asking for my carpet to be re-stretched but again I explained to him that customers who aren't in the carpet industry mostlikely don't know what they are talking about and as a professional, it should be their job to confirm what is needed before taking money. He did offer to send someone over to look at the carpet and give me options as well as bring swatches if the carpet needed to be replaced. However, at that point, my experience had been so negative and I wasn't comfortable with the way I was being spoken to, that I told him to please just rip up my credit card information and I would contact them if I felt I wanted to. He kept insisting on sending someone over - typical salesman - that I finally interupted him and said please rip up my information and I'm hanging up the phone now.
