Technician (Anthony) was punctual, courteous, and did a excellent and thorough job inspecting and cleaning my old water heater/furnace. Technician answered all my questions on the condition of the furnace, and gave me helpful information on its proper maintenance. Would call them again and recommend to friends and family.

We contracted for O'Brien to provide a "service contract" for our six heating and cooling units at our 8000 sq. ft. building, three of which they had installed 7 years ago. The wrong filters were put in place and secured ("rigged") with duct tape to fit (I had been shown the area by going up on the roof of our building with a more honest contractor). The front desk staff who answered the phones weren't the most pleasant; sometimes the actual service staff would be late or not show, with no call before or after a missed appointment. The actual employees who showed up were very pleasant, and thorough. And the work was done in a timely fashion once they were here. Forgetting the finances, they were probably a typical service provider who was average at best; not an Angies list top performer. The finances were a joke. We seemed to pay a "contract" to have them available, only to have to pay additionally for any real services. Not only a "bait and switch", but you get the feeling that the "discounts" they gave us were on top of highly inflated costs to begin with. I don't think basing costs on $2-300 to walk in the door for an hour's AC/Heat service is appropriate. We are using another service locally who provides the same service. We get pleasant treatment and quick calls from the staff, timely showing up for the job, and very reasonable service. Changing our 6 sets of filters, purchasing a dozen filters for all six of the units, and having the units looked at for "maintenance" was a whopping $500; with the dozen filters for each unit making up $350 costs (it'll hold us 3 years), I didn't think the $150 "service call fee" was unreasonable. And "nice is as nice does" is super to work with.
Description of Work: Povided our business with "service contract" which essentially provided us with nothing, as we paid for each service as we went along.

The provider showed up on time. Explained what he was doing as he tuned up the unit. He also took a look at the water heater adjusted the water temperature. He also made some suggestions on how to install a new water heater, when that time comes(which is soon) so that it will last longer. When he was done he left the area clean.

Anthony came and my daughter let him in.I before he started any work at his request she called me to ask if had had any problems with the boiler.I told her the one problem I had before. When i came in he had the burners out and he was cleaning them. They looked almost new when he finished(my boiler is about 20 years old).He vacumed under and around. After he put everything back together he had me turn on the heat to check the pressure and operating system. He pointed out 2 problems on the boiler .I told him I would have them fixed right away. Anthony also advised me how to maximize my system which would save me money. He was extremely professional and informative.Unlike others who have come before he took his time did an excellent job and explained what and why.I would recommend him to any one and every one. Thank you Anthony.

Everything was great. I called after buying an Angie's Deal and got an appointment just a few days later. The woman who made the appointment was very nice. I was at work, so my elderly dad was here to meet Anthony, who was punctual, professional and so nice to my father who likes to hang around and chat. Anthony explained what he would be doing, inspected everything and then sent me an email listing everything he checked. I am set for the winter and very satisfied. Thank you so much. This company was really nice to work with. I would call them again if necessary.

Chris came promptly, gave me options and ways to save money by using alternate brands if I wanted. They said they had products when others I called never even showed up, or came and then took weeks to get back with an estimate! By that time, O'Brien had the equipment installed. Had several questions after and also, the fan motor burned out, and someone was here on the weekend ASAP to figure it out, and Monday morning, all was fixed - no charge. Pleasant installers, they know their products, responsive, and honest. So far, only positive experiences. One of the best companies I've ever dealt with.

We haven't hired T.F. O'Brien for HVAC installation yet (we are ironing out a few details on our end first), but in the meantime, I felt it was necessary to provide a review based on the quote and communication we have had thus far. Chris O'Brien came to check out our house and arrived on time and was very thorough with the walk-through. Since then, he has been most responsive contractor we have worked with. We are new homeowners and are not well-versed in HVAC but Chris answered every single question of ours via email within 1-2 hours. We received more options from T.F. O'Brien than any other HVAC company and when we asked, Chris gave us his best advice on what he thought would suit our situation (and it wasn't the costliest option, either!). We are very pleased with the communication, professionalism and quality of service for the walk-through and quoting stage of this process.

The installers were prompt and nice enough, but there were multiple problems: 1. They did not have the correct equipment to suck up the dust when they were drilling through the brick. They also did not make sure all of the adjacent windows were closed when they were drilling; the result was that I had a thick coat of dust in the room next to the room in which they were working. They ended up giving me $100 off the final total for a cleaner, but only after I asked. 2. They did not tell me until they were about to install the main, outdoor unit that it'd be better to have a concrete slab underneath it (the space it was going had grass). I therefore had to have this done at the last minute, which delayed the work (and added to the cost). 3. The most frustrating problem was that one of the air conditioners was installed improperly; apparently if it is even slightly tilting to either the left or right it will collect water, which results in a musty smell whenever you run it. Also, they apparently only have one person on their entire staff who is capable of fixing it (he was the third person who came to the house to try to fix it). And this person must be in demand because he fixed it last year but the smell is back this year and I've twice had him scheduled to come here and fix it and TWICE they've cancelled on me at the last minute. The first time they cancelled they said they'd call me back to reschedule and they never did; I had to call back to reschedule myself. In short, the install/repair staff is not properly equipped and lacking expertise, while the front-office staff is inept. Too bad because I think they're a local company.

I think it was Mathew who came over the next day on time. For what its worth the system did kick in at some point and started working, but i was definitely under the impression that we'd need a new setup. I suppose this is more of a reco on trustworthiness and good business practices more than anything but i felt it worth it to describe. Anyway, service call was performed, took a good amount of time and as it turned out the system was just neglected and dirty, my fault. I had already figured the job to cost at least 8k to replace, but the tech told us that there was no need to replace at this time. Still had some life left. Rare that someone will just be plainly honest with you, especially when it means a decent loss of business for them. Anyway, good for them and they will definitely be getting the call when the time does come to replace.
Description of Work: Had company come out on a service call to have a look at an older 4 ton ac that decided not to wake up after winter. Under the impression that we were going to need a complete replacement of our system I called TF Obrien to come out. Salesperson was due to come over on Friday, but we also made an appointment to get a service call for the next day just to see if anything could be done.

Chris came to my house before we started our major renovation and within 20 minutes was able to determine where the trunk lines would go, the paths within our walls and how to camouflage the electrical and refrigeration lines within the exterior walls. He had a written bid sent within a week and it was a fair bid - not the cheapest, not the most. Based on other Angie's List comments and my gut instinct I hired O'Brien. They began work when they said they would and worked straight through until done. They did the best they could to minimize damage to existing structures when running vents and managed to install vents in locations that other vendors said would be impossible. They coordinated well with the GC and were easy to deal with. AJ oversaw the project and Chris was involved on an on-going basis, as well. As the project evolved they found even better ways to install the mini-splits; this reduced my cost and they let me keep the difference. Chris, AJ and Co. are stand-up professionals and a pleasure to do business with.
Description of Work: Installed 2 central air units and 2 mini-splits. Also installed ducts for kitchen and bathroom vents.

First, let me say that I have never been upset enough to write a review about a company ever. As an educated consumer, you should BEWARE the business, or business owner that tells you they have enough business to dissatisfy or disappoint customers and act blassé about it. ( I guess that's one of the reasons Angie's List was created, and I joined to specifically write this review.) I am in the retail business for 20+ years as an Operations Executive and I manage over 400+ retail locations all over the Tri-State Area for a Global Brand (locations that all require AC & Heating systems installed, and maintained I might add) so I'm usually very sympathetic to business owners and operators. I went to this company to inquire about options regarding correcting, or replacement of my current AC system in my home, which is inadequate to cool my living area. I had already received (2) other estimates, but no Heat Load calculation or (Manual J) was done of the space so I wasn't sure that their suggested tonnage for a new unit would solve my problem. I only stopped into TF O'Brian ( against my better judgment) because they were local in my neighborhood and I passed there location many times on my way home from work ( I was apprehensive because they have a partnership with Carrier, it and screams out all over their building, and my AC units are TRANE). Upon entering their location, I asked if there was someone that could help me discuss the issue, I readily explained that my AC problem is complex, and I was looking for some expert guidance on how to tackle solving it once and for all, with the definitively correct solution regarding my 2nd Floor Trane Spilt-System. After speaking with Sara?, the office manager, and one of the partners Chris, they assured me they can work on, and acquire new Trane units if necessary, and asked me did I want to set up a service call to get the unit checked out. Since I already had a fairly good idea of what was wrong with the unit from the first 2 AC visits (I have (2) 2.5ton spilt systems in my home, and the 1st. floor unit had already been serviced the prior week), I was much more interested in getting someone out to my house that could give me the options on how to improve the cooling capacity; not just service the existing set-up and I TOLD THEM AS MUCH! I did explain that I wanted the unit checked out becuase it was freezing up at the end of last season, but I DIDN'T WANT TO SERVICE A UNIT THAT WE MAY REPLACE with a totally new install, if that was the recommendation from someone that was going to evaluate the system CORRECTLY and give me a quote to change it out. ( If all I wanted was the unit serviced, I could have had the previous company do it at the same time as the 1st. floor.) What is the purpose of servicing a unit you are not going to ever use again if we decided to do a full system replacement? Beside that, I didn't want to have and pay for multiple visits, and pay multiple bills, over multiple weeks, to get an answer that can be acquired with one visit. I made it clear that I didn't want to delay the process of making a decision if I needed to pay someone ( potentially them if they gave me an accurate assessment) maybe $10-12K+ to get this fixed.) At this point, after admitting that the service tech's don't evaluate systems, or quote pricing specific to system installs for his company (that's what he does), Chris said he understood my point and said he would coordinate the service call with his schedule in order to come out and evaluate my system at the same time. After the office manager checked Chris's schedule right in front of my face, I was told that he would be out with the service tech a week later, next Friday to do both. I was dubious of the odds that was going to happen, but I said ok anyway hoping both would show up. ( It's hard enough to get one service person to show up on time, or even at all, but two simultaneously......doubtful.) Sure enough, I waited a week on this man Chris, and he didn't show up!! As I suspected, something else came up and he reneged on his word! I even called the office to confirm the appointment and stated they could come later if necessary and he still blew me off!! Oh yeah, he had someone call after the service tech was already at my house to tell me he couldn't make it; so I guess that was supposed to cover it. However, even though that was extremely irritating and got me highly annoyed, that wasn't enough to make me write this review. Since I believe in what I call in my business "Customer Recovery" I said I'll make the best of it, and Chris and I will work it out later. (As I said, I try to empathetic when it comes to issues of running a business.) The tech was already in my house so admittedly, I had him look at the system since he was already there and it didn't make sense to wait another week for any kind of assessment. He proceeded and at the end, presented a bill for "servicing my system". Serviced the system? He turned it on, checked some temps. in several places, and checked the filter that I changed a week ago. I'm sure he did his job, and I don't knock him for it. He also was very polite and tried to be helpful, but I still didn't know what to do with the system, why it froze up, or what my alternatives were to fix it correctly, but I now have a bill to tell me what I already know, which is nothing useful...............great! Now we get to the reason I am taking my evening to write this review. Of coarse, the service tech wanted payment on the spot, and normally I would have just paid the bill (the previous week, the service bill for the 1st. floor was $537 and I paid it immediately before he left my house), but I told this service tech that under the circumstances of Chris not showing up to do the assessment, I wasn't comfortable with paying the bill until I spoke with Chris first. I had no problem paying the bill, but in principle, I thought it was fair to ask if he would deduct the service fee from the cost of a full installation since he didn't show up to give me a choice. Let's see, collect $127+tax for a service fee, or several thousand dollars for a full Central AC install................I thought it was a no brainer..............in my world it is.........I guess not in Chris' and TF O'Brien's! Anyway, because I didn't want to delay getting Chris out to my house another week, and I also wanted to discuss this bill ( still thinking this should be a quick/easy convo.) I went over to TF O'Brien's location after the service tech left my house in order to try and get an appointment with Chris sooner than later ( since he's soooooo busy), and also coordinate how we should/could cover the service charge. BIG MISTAKE!! Customer Service went into the toilet!! Not only was he totally defensive about not showing up to my house (frankly, I don't F@#*king care why you wasted my day when I took off from work to be available for an appointment on YOUR schedule!), he was so busy using his "selective" memory to try and prove that I wanted a service call ( which I never denied, if he was going to be there) that he totally skipped past the fact that I was trying to give him a chance to make it work for both of us, so that I get my full system installed, and he gets more revenue out of this opportunity than $127.00 plus tax. That didn't work because rather than show any level of proficient customer service, or client rapport, he cut me off and stated; "You should really go with one of your other quotes because I really don't need the business anyway."............. WOW, REALLY!! I waited an extra week to get blown off, and hear that? Since I don't believe in spending my money with businesses that don't value it, that's exactly what I'm going to do. But in addition, I'm also going to write this review, post it on Angie's List, and send it to everyone I know who lives on Long Island and parts that can be reached by the Internet and tell them if they value their money as well, don't spend it with TF O'Brien..............they already have enough business, so they don't have the time, nor care enough to do business with you. That, plus my $127+tax is all they're ever gonna get from me.

We chose them for an estimate based on Angie?s List reviews. The salesman, Brendan, walked us through the house explaining in detail how the job would be done. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions and concerns. We sat down and he explained different price and equipment choices. That afternoon he emailed a formal proposal detailing everything we discussed. We received lower prices from two other contractors but it was Brendan who sold us on T.F. O?Brien. We were impressed with his presentation and surprised at the amount of time he gave us to discuss the job. During the next week or two we emailed questions that were answered the same day. The job started as promised. The crew was on time and ready to work. We walked the job with AJ and went over how it would be done. We were concerned about losing closet and attic storage space. He did a great job in keeping loss to a minimum. They were all professional, courteous and as neat as possible. The job was completed on time. There were a few bumps along the way but overall it was an excellent job. In the end we gave an A rating for price, not for amount but for the value. After completion a minor adjustment was required. The day I called someone was at our house to investigate. It was taken care of two days later. Follow up is an important part of a job and theirs was impressive. Calls to the office were answered by friendly, professional and caring people. They took care of registering the equipment with the manufacturers, applying for the Carrier and LIPA rebates, and sent paperwork for the federal tax credit. I received the Carrier check already.

I was really impressed with the professionalism and knowledge Anthony used to take care of the heating problem in our house. Thank you T.F O'brien for taking care of us!
Description of Work: We just moved in our rental in August and noticed part of the house was not getting heat. It took some time working with our landlords to get the repairs started. Anthony came by twice - first time to figure out what the problem was ($129 +tax) and the next time to replace the seized motor blower ($450). It took him about 2hrs for the replacement. Anthony was extremely professional and he explained to us what the problem was in great detail and got the new part ordered asap, so that we could get the heat in the back portion of our house. Thank you!
